I am delighted to welcome poet D. Avery to the bookstore in time for Christmas with her two poetry collections beginning with Chicken Shift
Poems of life; Crossings & Roadkill; fun, philosophical inquiries into why the chicken crossed the road and the consequences therefrom. Short witty, multi-layered poems. Thought and laugh provoking
The most recent review for the collection
This book of poetry, inspired by the riddle “Why did the chicken cross the road?”, is a delightful collection of humorous philosophy or philosophical humour. You choose. Whichever way you read it, and in whatever order, its combination of light humour and deep thought provides hours of engaging reading. That D. Avery can write so many poems starting from the inane childish riddle is amazing. Each poem is different and provides another intriguing way of looking at life and contemplating its big questions. Why did the chicken cross the road? Read this book to consider the possibilities.

About D.Avery
D. Avery (196?-20??) has long been a compulsive poet. Despite a very important day job educating public school children, she is often distracted by this compulsion, as well as by life’s great questions, such as “Kayak, or bike?”. Though she has come to realize that nothing difficult is ever easy, she believes that it’s all good.

Thanks Robbie. This started as observations from my bike rides to school; I goofed around with some poems with a kids’ writing club after school. Then the theme grew into what I have referred to as poetic philosophy-lite. Starring chickens!

Your book of poems sounds interesting. I’m a teacher, too. I went to college in Wenham, Massachusetts which is on the coast.

Teacher? That’s tough work. But it was a fine group of fourth graders that encouraged the development of this compilation. Since then a few adults have also had kind words about Chicken Shift.
Nice to meet you.

Hi. D.Avery here. I’m glad you checked this out.Chicken Shift is a fun read (I would say so). “For the Girls” didn’t come from a fun place or time, but there are bright spots in it.

Chicken Shift is on my nightstand and I read from it when I want to smile or ponder the wisdom of chickens and poets. For the Girls is a must read for anyone who has faced the maw of the beast we call cancer. D. Avery might claim to merely dip a toe in writing, but what she economically writes is priceless. She’s a permanent fixture at Carrot Ranch as a Rough Writer, and serves as the community’s official bard, writing weekly Ranch Yarns. I’m so delighted to see her featured here, Sally! Thank you!

Hi Sally, I have read both these books of poems by D. Avery and am happy to recommend both.
(Thanks for including my review.)
They are very different reads, but equally good.
Chicken shift looks at life philosophically and with humour through words of the old riddle “Why did the chicken cross the road?”
For the girls hits home for anyone who has personally experienced, or experienced through the suffering of a loved one, the dreaded breast cancer. The poems lay feelings bare and explore both dark and light.
