Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New Book on the Shelves – The Cruel Romance: A Novel of Love and War by Marina Osipova

Delighted to welcome a new author to the Cafe and Bookstore. Marina Osipova is the author of The Cruel Romance set in war torn Russia in 1941. As one reviewer says “This is a haunting tale, beautifully scripted and laced with wonderfully composed metaphors and descriptive passages that turn an otherwise dark and heinous period of human history, into something that is palatable and at times, even simplistically beautiful.” I hope you will enjoy.

About the book

October 1941. A small village outside Moscow. Serafima bids farewell to Vitya, a Soviet officer going to the front. With only moments left together, she places a cross around her beloved’s neck and reluctantly releases him into a cruel world where nothing is certain, especially whether she will ever see him again. Days later Germans invade her village and take over her tiny house. Serafima and her mother must comply with orders, endure abuse, and stay put or their village will be annihilated.

  1. Sally, thank you. Showcasing my book on the day of Victory in WWII has a special, moving significance to me – one of my uncles perished in WWII. He was nineteen-years-old. Two others fought on the front. My father, as a teenager, left the school to work at a factory that produced ammunition. In my country, there was no family, which would not be affected by the war.

    • Delighted to share Marina.. and tragedy for your family. I can not even imagine the horrors of the Russian people during those dark days. My grandfather served in WWI from 1914 and was killed 7 days before the armistice on November 2nd 1918. My mother was just over a year old. My father joined the Royal Navy in 1935 and served on destroyer escorts in the North Atlantic and then in the Far East until 1946. It was only in 70s that he felt able to talk about that time and was persuaded to write it down as part of our family history. They deserve to be remembered and celebrated. Their sacrifice enables us to talk to each other today with freedom.

I would be delighted to receive your feedback (by commenting, you agree to Wordpress collecting your name, email address and URL) Thanks Sally
