Sally Cafe and Bookstore – Buy a Book for Christmas – #Fantasy #Science Fiction – Tina Frisco, D.Wallace Peach, Lorinda J. Taylor and Teri Polen

Welcome to the first of the Christmas book promotions for the week and we still have about 130 authors to feature before the big day. We have a great many fantasy writers in the cafe and they all have amazing reviews…here are just a few today..

The first is Tina Frisco whose book Vampryrie has changed the perspective of these creatures of all those who have read the book.. me included.. I can highly recommend and all Tina’s books would make wonderful Christmas gifts.

About Vampyrie

What if vampires were not the undead, but rather the dying? What if there were two factions among vampires: the sustained and the unsustainable? And what if those factions were at war with one another over the life of a young woman who promised them a future? Vampyrie brings the myth of the vampire into the realm of possibility. Phoebe Angelina Delaney is a reluctant genius and compassionate hothead. She finds herself in a pitch-dark underground and doesn’t remember how she got there. Did she drink too much alcohol and wander off in a stupor, or was she kidnapped by a malicious element determined to make her life a living hell?

Sir Michael Alan David is a vampire – an enigma, charismatic and mysterious, who weaves in and out of Phoebe’s life. Does he intend to use his title as a ruse to draw her closer to an unearthly fate, or is he a cloak-and-dagger knight in shining armor? Too many secrets have been kept for too long. Phoebe must unravel the mystery in order to survive. Two major characters from the author’s first novel, Plateau join forces with Phoebe to battle the demons in Vampyrie.

Here is a recent review for the book

Vampire: Origin of the Vampire is a new twist on how we look at vampires. This book views vampires in a different way as benign creatures but the bad ones are known as rogues.

The author has created a fascinating and action-packed story of intriguing characters with strong personalities. The main protagonist is Phoebe. She is strong willed and opinionated and is always questioning everything and everyone in her path. When she meets a real life vampire her world is turned upside down and nothing is the same.

There is action, excitement, confrontations between good vampires and rogues. There are secrets that are uncovered and surprises that are revealed that will keep the reading hanging on every word.

I don’t usually read books about vampires but this book is not your average vampire book. It was a pleasant surprise and an enjoyable read by a creative author who made this reader believe that vampires are real and benign characters. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a different take on vampires.

Another very popular fantasy author is D.Wallace Peach, and her recent series is receiving outstanding reviews. The first book in The Shattered Sea series is Soul Swallowers and book two was released a few weeks ago. The two books together would make a wonderful Christmas gift.

About Soul Swallowers

When swallowed, some souls gift insights, wisdom, a path to understanding. Others unleash power, proficiency with a sword, and indifference to death. One soul assimilates with ease. But swallow a host of the dead and risk a descent into madness.

Estranged from his family over the murder of his wife, young Raze Anvrell wields his fists to vent his rage. Then a chance at a new life beckons, and he retreats to the foothills of the Ravenwood, the haunt of unbound ghosts. He and his mentor build a freehold, a life of physical labor and the satisfaction of realizing a dream. They raise horses and whittle by the fire until the old man dies, and Raze swallows his first soul.

When his brother reaches out, open wounds begin to scar. But the tenuous peace won’t last. While those who rule the Vales yield to the lure of their ambitions, slavers of Ezar roam the countryside, hunting for human chattel. While one man manipulates the law, another heeds the souls of violence howling in his head.

Raze too listens to his soul’s whispers, and as danger intrudes on his quiet life, he has no choice but to return to his father’s world and join the fight.

One of the recent reviews for the book

I didn’t want to like this book because I kept telling myself that I don’t enjoy Fantasy (even though I previously read Peach’s The Sorcerer’s Garden and listed it as one of my favorite books of that year). So now I know beyond doubt that if D. Wallace Peach writes the novel, I will not only enjoy it, I’ll delve deep into it.

The world building is immense, and I was afraid I’d get confused about each world and who lives in it; instead, I battled the slavers and the schemers on either side of the Shattered Sea. I fell in love with Raze, the main character, and I sank into the philosophy of a world where souls can be swallowed, and consequences sweet or horrific, depending on the circumstances (and the soul). Love lights the novel when darkness threatens to consume the characters, and Peach’s prose on life, spirituality, love, death, loss, pain, joy had me in tears at times. This author wears her heart (and soul) in her books’ sleeves (inside and out), and we readers are rewarded by her efforts.

And another series that would please Science Fiction/fantasy readers are the books byLorinda J. Taylor who is receiving wonderful reviews for Fathers and Demons.

About the Fathers and Demons… Glimpses of the Future

All human beings must live with demons, but those demons are unusually powerful when they are summoned by the sort of catastrophe that happened aboard the Darter in 2761. No member of the crew completely escaped being affected, including the Engineer Cmdr. Ian Glencrosse. Nevertheless, when Capt. Nikalishin receives command of the first real interstellar mission under the new Phenix Project, he selects Ian Glencrosse to serve as his Chief Engineer; few experts in temporal quantum drive are still alive and Nikalishin and Glencrosse have become close friends. And in spite of (or perhaps because of) his own demons, Glencrosse accepts the appointment.

As the day approaches when the IS Ariana will depart for Epsilon Eridani, the crew takes leave time to attend the wedding of the Communications Officer, Lt. Avi Oman, and Capt. Mercedes Tulu, Administrative Aide to the Phenix Project’s Mission Director. Lt. Oman hails from the Istrian Judish Enclave, a place of origin mysterious to most 28th-century Earthers, and the visit proves to be an enlightening experience. What can we expect to have become of remnant religious populations in the humanist 28th century?

Cmdr. Glencrosse does not accompany his fellow crewmembers on this happy excursion. He has long been haunted by visions of a malevolent entity that inhabits the depths of space – the very entity he sees as responsible for destroying the Darter. Both his Captain and the team psychologist know about this aberration; in fact, Dr. Winehandle had at one time improvised an unfortunate nickname for the entity – “the god in the pod.” While the Engineer’s peers think his delusions are under control, Ian still secretly believes in the reality of this demon space-god – that it disapproves of humans’ invasion of its territory and therefore has doomed the upcoming mission to destruction. Ian is convinced he will not survive the voyage and so he is heading home to Mitchican Prefecture, where he plans to confront his parents and make his peace after a long separation.

One of the recent reviews for the book

Lorinda J. Taylor develops the character of one of her most fascinating protagonists, the Captain Robbie Nikalishin, who despite constant mispronouncements of his surname conquers this as well as the traumatic initial journey into the depths of the galaxy from a previous novel to find himself strong enough to accept the offer of a second mission, whilst at the same time learning more of the nature of the remnants of religiosity in the 28th century, particularly the Jewish culture and faith, interlaced with a generous helping of ruminations on the father-son/mother-son relationships.

Perhaps an unusual juxtaposition for a story to start from, but Lorinda J. Taylor’s imagination never strays too far from the unusual, and never fails to extract empathy and interest in equal measure from the reader. It is a concoction worth the sampling. Looking at the world through Robbie’s eyes can be frustrating and indeed sometimes challenging, but never dull!

We await the next episode of the Nikalishin saga with anticipation, not a little dread but the hope of some success.

And last but certainly not least today… more Science Fiction/Fantasy from Teri Polen with The Gemini Connection which is sure to please readers this Christmas.

About The Gemini Connection.

Teen twin brothers Evan and Simon Resnik are fiercely loyal to each other and share an unusual bond—they experience each other’s emotions as their own and can sense where the other is. On their dying planet of Tage, scientists work tirelessly on its survival. Like the twins’ parents, Simon is a science prodigy, recruited at a young age to work with the brilliant creator of Scientific Innovations. To the bitter disappointment of their parents, Evan shows no aptitude or interest in science. As a Mindbender, he travels into the minds of scientists to locate buried memories, connect ideas and concepts, and battle recurring nightmares.

When Simon mysteriously disappears, Evan is plunged into a world of loss and unbearable guilt. For the first time, he can’t ‘feel’ Simon—it’s like he no longer exists. Evan blames himself. No one knows that he ignored his brother’s pleas for help on the night he went missing. A year later, Simon is still gone. Evan lost his twin, but Tage might have lost its last hope of survival when it’s discovered that Simon’s unfinished project could be its salvation. Evan is determined to find him—somewhere—and bring Simon home. Their unusual connection might be more extraordinary than they know, and the key to locating Simon.

This novel was fantastic. I’m not a big science fiction fan, but this one grabbed my attention and kept it through the whole story. (I was directing a play while reading this book, and I was often caught reading the book backstage before performances to see what would happen next.) I loved the complicated relationship between the twin brothers Simon and Evan and that the narrative goes back and forth between them AND back and forth in time. They also have a subconscious bond to each other that is explained well and essential to the plot. Simon is a pure genius. Evan is the athlete, and in this futuristic world, the parents value the brains over the brawn, which is an interesting twist. Another interesting twist to this book is the introduction of a LGBT plot line. It is shown in such a healthy, positive way, and I loved it.

I adored the fact that problem Evan had with the relationship when he discovers it was not that it was homosexual but that he didn’t like the guy because of a long-standing rivalry. There is a lot of emotional tension throughout the story, and the characters are fully formed. Evan has the coolest job. Through technology, he is able to go into the minds of people and eradicate their nightmares. This reminded me of an old 80s movie I loved called Dreamscape. I highly recommend this book for scifi and fantasy readers 12 and older.
