Granny Una’s apple pie by Robbie Cheadle
Our Granny Una makes the most delicious apple pie. She has handed the recipe over to the bakers in the family as she is now 94 years old and doesn’t bake that much any more. Her recipe is totally divine and is best when eaten in large quantities with either cream or ice-cream.
Ingredients: Sweet pastry:
- 250 grams of unsalted butter;
- 1 cup castor sugar;
- 2 eggs;
- 3 cups cake flour;
- 1/2 teaspoon salt;
- 2 rounded teaspoons baking power.
Filling:
- 2 tins pie apples;
- 2 teaspoons mixed spice;
- 2 tablespoons sugar;
- 60 grams melted butter;
- 2 tablespoons brandy OR lemon juice;
- 2 tablespoons cake flour.
Method:
To make the pie crust, beat softened butter and castor sugar and then beat in eggs, one at a time. Add flour, baking powder and salt. Knead until a dough forms. Shape the dough into two long blocks and refrigerate (I refrigerate overnight).
Cut the chilled pastry dough into line slices and line the bottom of a prepared baking tin (approximately 35 cm by 25 cm).
Blind bake the bottom layer of pastry for approximately 15 minutes in an oven pre-heated to 190 degrees Celsius.
While the bottom layer of pastry is baking, make the pie filling. Mix the pie apples, mixed spice, sugar, melted butter, brandy OR lemon juice and flour together. I added two handfuls of blueberries just because I had them and I thought it would be fun to do so.
Spread the filling over the based on the pie. Thinly slice the second block of pastry dough and cover the mixture with the slices. Bake for approximately 20 minutes at 190 degrees Celsius. Turn the over down to 150 degrees Celsius and bake for a further 20 to 30 minutes until golden brown.
Serve with cream or ice cream.

Robbie Cheadle was born in London in the United Kingdom. Her father died when she was three months old and her mother immigrated to South Africa with her tiny baby girl. Robbie has lived in Johannesburg, George and Cape Town in South Africa and attended fourteen different schools. This gave her lots of opportunities to meet new people and learn lots of social skills as she was frequently “the new girl”.
Robbie is a qualified Chartered Accountant and specialises in corporate finance with a specific interest in listed entities and stock markets. Robbie has written a number of publications on listing equities and debt instruments in Africa and foreign direct investment into Africa.
Robbie is married to Terence Cheadle and they have two lovely boys, Gregory and Michael. Michael (aged 11) is the co-author of the Sir Chocolate series of books and attends school in Johannesburg. Gregory (aged 14) is an avid reader and assists Robbie and Michael with filming and editing their YouTube videos and editing their books.

What a lovely, poignant book! It’s the only one I’ve read that describes what life was like for very young children growing up during World War Two. There is also quite a bit of English history included, which I found quite interesting. The wartime recipes are a nice touch.
It’s told from the perspective of a girl aged 4-6 years old, and focuses mainly on the daily life of kids living through horrendous times, without truly understanding what was going on in the adult world. Many of the stories told reminded me of my Dutch father-in-law’s descriptions of growing up during WWII in the Netherlands.
It’s appropriate for young children as well as young readers. Fascinating read.

This pie looks delicious. I bet it was tasty with the blueberries. I like to improvise in the kitchen a bit and add what I have. Yum!

This looks great. must try it. Hubby loves apples and I make him a nice German Apple cake but I think he would like this as well.

I don’t think anyone would be able to resist this.. with some whipped cream or rich vanilla ice-cream.. or custard.. that’s it off to bed before I raid the fridge… hugsxx
