One of the recent reviews for the book
Veterinarian Rachele Baker provides some excellent idea, some of which I wish I had had with my first dog. I have made some of the mistakes that this book addresses and it was my furbabies who suffered for them.

About The Cruel Romance
October 1941. A small village outside Moscow. Serafima bids farewell to Vitya, a Soviet officer going to the front. With only moments left together, she places a cross around her beloved’s neck and reluctantly releases him into a cruel world where nothing is certain, especially whether she will ever see him again. Days later Germans invade her village and take over her tiny house. Serafima and her mother must comply with orders, endure abuse, and stay put or their village will be annihilated.
As World War II intertwines Serafima’s and Vitya’s life with that of a young German violinist and a Russian intellectual, their destinies are irrevocably altered. Can they rise to the challenge of agonizing moral choices and learn to forgive and love again? Praise The Cruel Romance is a tale of love, violence, and acceptance as Serafima is forced to live with what the Germans left behind.
This compelling story makes for a thrilling read in a setting and time that comes to life, pulling the reader into the vividly drawn, rarely seen world. Elisabeth Amaral, author of When Any Kind of Love Will Do and Czar Nicholas, The Toad, and Duck Soup
One of the recent reviews for the book on Goodreads
This is an unsettling, heartbreaking but compelling story about how ordinary people thrown into extraordinary circumstances struggle to survive in war-torn Europe. We view this world through Serafima’s eyes. A young girl of seventeen who is also under pressure through living with her cold-hearted mother. The realistic portrayal of life in Russia during this devastating period of history was unique and enlightening. As was the continuing battle for Serafima and her son in the aftermath. An Interesting angle on a familiar and tragic time. Major Schuette is cruel, and Lt Werter Lindbery attempts to be kind, he is also musical. From this point, we have the beginnings of a tangled web of relationships.
The four main characters are brilliantly drawn, and the writing is of extremely high quality. Recommended.

And the final author today with a recent review is D.Wallace Peach for the first book in the Rose Shield Series – Catling’s Bane
About the book
Catling – She’s a weapon desired by those who reign and those who rebel.
In the tiered cities of Ellegeance, the elite Influencers’ Guild holds the power to manipulate emotions. Love and fear, pleasure and pain mark the extremes of their sway. But it’s the subtle blends that hook their victims’ hearts. They hide behind oaths of loyalty and rule the world.
Until Catling discovers the gift that will be her bane. She is the shield that disrupts the influencer’s sway.
Born in the grim warrens beneath the city, Catling rues the rose birthmark encircling her eye. Yet, it grants her a unique ability, the means to remake a civilization. To the Guild, she an aberration, a threat, and they order her death. No longer a helpless child, Catling has other plans.
As chaos shakes the foundations of order and rule, will she become the realm’s savior? Or its executioner?
Welcome to a world of three moons, a sentient landscape, rivers of light, and tier cities that rise from the swamps like otherworld flowers. A planet of waterdragons, where humans are the aliens living among three-fingered natives with spotted skin. Where a half-blood converses with the fog and the goddess plans her final reckoning.
In the spirit of the fantasy tradition set by Patrick Rothfuss, Karen Miller, and Glenda Larke, follow Catling’s journey as she grows into the deadly force that shapes the future. She is the realm’s shield, an influencer, assassin, healer, mother, and avenger. And all she desires is to go home.
A recent review for the book on Goodreads.
Your feelings – your ability to have an internal dialogue and make decisions based on your feelings , is a sacrosanct thing. Or at least in OUR world it is. Not so in the world created by D Wallace Peach in Catling’s Bane where people’s very emotions can be influenced by magic. Can be, and frequently are.
Catling’s Bane follows the life of Catling, a child of the warrens born with a difference; the ability to shield herself and others from the magic of influencers. In a world where the powerful and wealthy create and enforce law, and influencers hold even the mighty in their clutches, Catling’s gift is both to be desired and feared. For varied reasons, folk take Catling under their wings but he soon finds out not all of them have her best interests – or the world’s – at heart.
Catling’s Bane is a thought-provoking book, set in a rich fantasy world where the rules are very different to our own. I enjoyed reading Catling’s plight as she was pulled here and there and shamelessly used by others for their own good, or their perceived notions of the greater good. I loved the concept of influencing someone and enjoyed seeing how such an immense power was wielded. Peach wrote some wonderful characters who have an incredible sense of depth to them; there were very few who could be painted as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Rather they were much more complex and flawed as real people should be.
I enjoyed Catling’s Bane and am keen to see where her continuing journey takes her. I recommend this book to fantasy lovers, adventure seekers and those who enjoy a magically crafted world where the impossible is possible.
