Charli Mills lives in a remote finger of land that juts up into Lake Superior, that has been experiencing very deep snowfalls. This inevitably is going to lead to a spring melt that could well threaten many of the homes in the area.. In her Challenge post, this week she shares the efforts of the local residents to influence the efforts of the council to carry out preventative measures.

This week Charli has set the subject of ‘A mouse’ as the prompt for the flash fiction.. and here is my response….

My Mouse

I am extremely attached to my mouse, small and demanding at times, but I need a muse that is easy to maintain, and doesn’t demand three walks a day and half my dinner. It sits quietly by my side, observing my every move, and eager to be handled at every opportunity. I have owned several mice in my lifetime, but this one has a special place in my heart, as it has supported me thorough my latest book and editing process. But it is showing signs of burn out. Perhaps it will perk up if I change its battery.

  18. Oh my gosh…that is the cutest mouse…even if it needs a battery. I actually did have a field mouse and her babies for one winter a long time ago. She was adorable and so were her babies that we kept in the mud room. She was so friendly and intelligent…she actually listened to everything I said and never misbehaved. I just can’t say no, at the chagrin of my husband, and the unhappy cat, dog, bunny rabbit, and a little sparrow…that also stayed with us that winter…it was a brutal winter. 🙂

      • Oh…then certainly do know. One early morning I opened the door with my hot coffee in hand to enjoy the morning air, under the shade of our veranda. I suddenly noticed that six very young squirrels were sitting in our chairs and two where on the glass table top, waiting for breakfast. Sometime earlier in the spring season, I took on the responsibility of caring for a very skinny pregnant squirrel and brought her back to health, with nuts and fruits. I would leave them on the table on the veranda. So, It was no wonder that she brought her babies to back to me. Instead of leaving the nuts and fruit on the table, I scattered the meal on the hillside or our home backyard to be consumed by the squirrels, chipmunks, and rabbits. Of course we also had a bird sanctuary and oh my gosh, we were awakened every morning with birdsong. It lovely. In midsummer, when the humming birds came, those evil little rascals, as pretty as they were, tried to rule our backyard. Of course, I had humming bird feeders every where. Needless to say, it was never quiet at our house, but I loved it anyway. Karen 🙂

      • I love it and I couldn’t put it down, until bedtime and then I read some more. I will probably finish tonight. I love it and Sam and Henry. You also are an animal lover too. Your book really touches my heart, and the poor old cat, finally had a true family and friends…I did tear up. I will do a review this weekend. Karen 🙂
