Welcome to the first of the author updates this week with recent reviews for books on the shelves of the Cafe and Bookstore.
The first recent review is for the paranormal thriller The Contract: Between Heaven and Earth by John W. Howell and Gwen Plano.
About The Contract
The earth is threatened with a catastrophic political event which could result in international warfare and destroy all life on the planet. In heaven, a divine council decides that extraordinary measures are essential. They call for an intervention that involves two souls returning to earth. The chosen two sign a contract that they will work to avert the disaster.
Brad Channing, a Navy SEAL, and Sarah O’Brien, a teacher, become heaven’s representatives on earth. The story follows them as they individually and then together face overwhelming obstacles and eventually end up on a strategic Air Force base in California. It is there that they discover a conspiracy to assassinate the President of the United States. The terrorists have a plan for global dominance and they are determined to complete their mission. Although military leadership appears to have the President’s best interests at heart, it is not clear who can be trusted and who should be feared. The action is rough and tumble as Brad and Sarah try to figure out the culprits for the plot that will turn into a worldwide conflagration unless stopped.
If you enjoy thrillers, this is one with enough twists and adventure to keep you riveted and guessing. If you like your thriller along with a good romance, Brad and Sarah’s initial attraction and eventual love will sustain you as they live out their heavenly and earthly desires. A Great summer read.
One of the recent reviews for the book
The Contract is a perfect example of everything I love about Indie books. Mainstream publishers tend to ignore books that are unique, challenging, and cross-genre. Indie authors now have a way to write their passions and be courageous enough to not follow “mainstream’ rules – they publish independently! That said, The Contract is everything you love in a bestseller: suspense, mystery, romance, intriguing concepts. I love the blend of spiritualism/military ops/romance. A winning combination! I found the dialogue a bit stilted at times, which is the only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5. Bravo to Howell and Plano!

And another successful collaboration and a recent review for Jane Risdon and Christina Jones for their novel Only One Woman.
About the Book -Two women, one love story.
June 1968. Renza falls head over heels for heartthrob guitarist Scott. But after a romantic summer together they are torn apart when Renza’s family moves away.
December 1968. On the night she believes to be her last, Stella meets Scott at a local dance. He’s the most beautiful boy she’s ever seen and if this one night is all they have, she’ll take it.
As the final colourful year of the sixties dawns, the question is: can there be only one woman for Scott?
One of the recent reviews for the book
The Sixties are still a bit of a blur for me. That means I was there. And I have a lot of broken hearts to prove it – all mine. I was shot down so many times in those ten or so years that it’s a wonder I’m still here. All of which means I know something of the problems and the heartache that Only One Woman’s main protagonists Renza and Stella went through. But it wasn’t Scott I was after. Definitely not, believe me. It was Patricia and Hazel and Marie and Ann and Sybil and Melanie and …. I can’t go on.
The two girls in Only One Woman tell of their crush on Scott in a way that can only mean that the authors of this wonderfully nostalgic and loving look at the Sixties were rapt witnesses to those amazing years. The people, the songs, the music, the styles – and most of all the attitudes. In one sense it didn’t matter too much to me which of these two girls ended up with Scott because far more important than that was the way that these two authors got right into the hearts of the lovestruck Renza and Stella.
Ah, the authors. First, Christina Jones. Apart from a scintillating career in writing which began when she was a mere child, she has done so many odd-jobs – as well as odd jobs – that her life experience cannot be doubted. (Possibly the only work she didn’t do was captaining a North Sea oil rig, although I’m open to correction on that). And her co-author in this labour of love they have written is the incomparable Jane Risdon. Jane has been closely involved in so many fascinating experiences that she needs a separate wardrobe for all the T-shirts she has to vouch for it. Rock, Thrash Metal, Pop, R&B, Chinese Opera as well as movies, television and radio worldwide. And now writing, which amazingly she only got into five years ago. Stunning. Both stunning people.

The final author today with a recent review is Sue Coletta for her Mayhem Series crossover novella Hacked
About the book
Shawnee Daniels wrongly assumes she’s being punished for innocently hacking the Police Chief’s photos. Okay, maybe not-so-innocently, but someone had to expose him for the dog that he is. When she arrives at the mandatory computer seminar, the FBI enlists her help in stopping a serial killer who’s remotely hacking vehicles while the owners are behind the wheel.
Why he’s targeted these people remains a mystery. None of the victims frequent the same places, some don’t even live in the same state. The only commonality is they all drive Fords.
When Detective Levaughn Samuels is taken hostage—his life teetering on the edge of a high-speed chase—there’s nothing Shawnee won’t do to save him, no line she won’t cross. And when her BFF shows up unannounced with problems of her own, she only complicates matters.
Can Shawnee stop the killer before she loses the only man she’s ever loved? Or will the ride of his life end in death?
A recent review for review for Hacked (translated from the Spanish on Goodreads)
What I liked most about this book is that the protagonist, Shawnee, she is not the typical damsel in danger who expects a man to come and save her. On the contrary, she takes the case on her own shoulders and solves it practically alone.
Another character that I liked a lot was Nadine, I found her very funny. And she added that element of fun that lightened all the tension.
The story is short and it reads quite fast, it catches you from the beginning and when you think that nothing else can happen you are surprised because something happens. The end I did not expect and I loved it.

I think the one-woman-one-man question is worthy of consideration. Me, I stick with one but I understand how others don’t. So Scott: Make up your mind!
