This week the Carrot Ranch Flash Fiction Challenge by Charli Mills offers us the prompt of a ‘bucket of water’. This week Charli shares a road trip she took to find out more about a community that has a deep respect for water.
Here is my effort…
Following Elephants by Sally Cronin

The young boy raised the heavy tin bucket full of dusty liquid onto the rolled up shirt on his head. Both hands steadied the precious cargo as he watched the herd of elephants moving slowly off into the sunset. He had followed them all day from his village across the parched earth, knowing they were creatures capable of finding the most hidden of watering holes. They had led them to this ancient secret spring; a life-giving find for his village. He turned and retraced his steps homeward, cloaked in the dangerous predator filled dusk. Today his family would drink.

That’s quite a moving story, Sally, and well-suited to the image you chose from Pixabay. We take our water for granted. There are many who don’t share the same luxury.

Love this story, Sally! Often, game trails lead to springs in the desert mountains of Nevada. Such signs, though different from each region, are universal and can be life-saving.

Glad you enjoyed Charli… Although here in abundance in Ireland, living in Spain in the mountains which were very dry and prone to bush fires, we came to appreciate water in an entirely different way… xxx

Very nice piece, Sally. Africa can be like this during droughts.
