It is that time of the week when many of us are gathering 99 words, no more, no less, and responding to Carrot Ranch Flash Fiction Challenge by Charli Mills This week the prompt was getting old…..
A small price to pay by Sally Cronin
The old man stood to attention by the memorial in the village square, as he did each day during his afternoon constitutional. His knees were playing up, but nothing a stout stick couldn’t handle. Getting older had challenges, but unlike his drinking pals in the pub each evening, he knew aching joints were a small price to pay. As was his habit, he read the names on the brass plate aloud, remembering each one of his comrades who did not live to grow old. He wiped away a tear and continued his walk, feeling like the luckiest man alive.

If you would like to participate in this terrific challenge head over and find out more: https://carrotranch.com/2019/05/10/may-9-flash-fiction-challenge
I have a number of short story collections and you can find my books and their reviews: https://smorgasbordinvitation.wordpress.com/my-books-and-reviews-2019/
I love these and hope that I can participate soon. My husband is having a major surgery in a little over a week, so I am in overwhelm right now, but I love to write, and hopefully can participate in a future one. I love the things that come from this. Thank you kindly for letting us know about it. It is an excellent opportunity to strengthen our writing skills and have fun doing it.

The only good thing about growing old, is remembering all those who didn’t manage it…

A lovely way of portraying something that many grumble about, Sally. We’re so lucky to get to the age that we individually class as being old.

Well done, Sally. The body tends to remind us of what the spirit intends to keep a secret. Thanks.

Puts me in mind of our high school valedictorian who was killed 4 weeks after graduation… Along with 2 other gals, as they pulled up in front of the University so they could go in and register for classes. God Bless us, everyone.

Growing old is a privilege which many dont have. The old man though grieves for the loss of his comrades is happy to be alive with aching joints. A wonderful piece of FF.

Brief but very touching, Sally. I was at a local event on Friday and a 105 y.o. woman recited several poems from memory (one of them she had just learned for the occasion). And she wanted no prompts! Amazing!

What a touching private moment that gives us a glimpse at the honor age has not dimmed in the mind of this soldier given the gift of growing older.

Thanks Charli.. I met an old boy back in 1975 and he was 90 he would come in each day for a large glass of sherry in the restaurant I worked in and I would join him for my break. He had tales to tell of the Kyber Pass and he mates from there and the first world war.. he would have a tear in his eye when he spoke of them 60 years later. xxx
