Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New Book on the Shelves – Googling Old Boyfriends (Book 7 Camilla Randall Mysteries) by Anne R. Allen

Delighted to welcome Anne R. Allen to the Cafe and Bookstore with her wonderful selection of books. Today I am featuring book 7 in the Camilla Randall Mystery series – Googling Old Boyfriends.

About the book

“Okay, ’fess up.” Mickie McCormack’s eyes twinkled as she plunked a book on the counter. “If you’re that distracted by the Internet you’re either looking at porn or you’re Googling old boyfriends.”I felt my cheeks heat up. “Um, I’m guilty of the latter, I’m afraid. I’ve just run into an old boyfriend and he’s invited me to dinner, but…”The bell on the door jingled. There he was. Captain Maverick Jesus Zukowski, six foot, three inches of tall, dark, and the-one-who-got-away. ***The Camilla Randall mysteries are a laugh-out-loud mashup of crime fiction, rom-com, and satire. Morro Bay bookshop owner Camilla Randall is a magnet for murder, mayhem, and Mr. Wrong. But she always defeats the bad guys in her quirky, but oh-so-polite way.In this stand-alone 7th episode, Camilla befriends socialite Mickie McCormack—a sexy, mysterious older woman who’s going through a painful divorce.

Mickie has been Googling her old boyfriends to reconnect and “remember who she used to be.” Unfortunately every one of those boyfriends soon ends up dead. Is the serial killer Camilla’s old boyfriend Dr. Bob? Or one of Mickie’s old boyfriends? And can Camilla’s old boyfriend Captain Rick protect her and her cat Buckingham from being fed to the sharks before she solves the mystery?

One of the reviews for the book on Goodreads

Julie Valerie rated it Five Stars

Right out the gate, the story flies. An old boyfriend, an antique box, Braganza emeralds … and, of course, the central character I loved when reading Queen of Staves – Camilla Randall, beloved heroine and Morro Bay bookstore owner. (Who, by the way, is equal parts smart, resourceful, tragic, and freaking HYSTERICAL.) She’s turning 40 in a week without a boyfriend to help her cope, and oh yeah, there’s a serial killer on the loose.

Mickie McCormack’s in town and delivers comic relief amid Camilla’s pensive worrying as the mystery within the story unfolds. “It tastes like Vick’s Formula 44,” she [Mickie McCormack] said. “That’s the cough medicine my dad gave me when I was a kid. But, hey, we’re drinking it from Lalique angel wing glasses. They’d make anything taste better. These are lovely.” She gulped down the wine and refilled her glass.

Great elements combine for a great story. Interesting ever-changing characters … love and money are at stake. There are twists, turns, detectives, police officers, dead people. Romantic interests, old boyfriends, boats, guns, jewelry, treasure. Real trouble. And a great bookstore in California with a cat, Buckingham, who meanders about as the plot thickens. The chapters are delightfully dense with action and almost always end with a cliff hanger that prevents you from setting the book down.

Another great Camilla Randall novel! I’m so glad this is a series. Can’t wait for the next one. Brava!
