Smorgasbord Book Reviews – Wake Robin Ridge: Book One by Marcia Meara.

I am delighted to share my review for Wake Robin Ridge: Book One by Marcia Meara

About the book

Marcia Meara, author of Swamp Ghosts and Finding Hunter, has set Book One of her Wake-Robin Ridge series amid the haunting beauty of the North Carolina mountains, where ghosts walk, ancient legends abound, and things still go bump in the night.

“A PHONE RINGING AT 2:00 A.M. never means anything good. Calls at 2:00 A.M. are bad news. Someone has died. Someone is hurt. Or someone needs help.”

On a bitter cold January night in 1965, death came calling at an isolated little cabin on Wake-Robin Ridge. Now, nearly 50 years later, librarian Sarah Gray has quit her job and moved into the same cabin, hoping the peace and quiet of her woodland retreat will allow her to concentrate on writing her first novel. Instead she finds herself distracted by her only neighbor, the enigmatic and reclusive MacKenzie Cole, who lives on top of the mountain with his Irish wolfhound as his sole companion.

As their tentative friendship grows, Sarah learns the truth about the heartbreaking secret causing Mac to hide from the world. But before the two can sort out their feelings for each other, they find themselves plunged into a night of terror neither could have anticipated. Now they must unravel the horrifying events of a murder committed decades earlier. In doing so, they discover that the only thing stronger than a hatred that will not die is a heart willing to sacrifice everything for another.

My review for the book

A very enjoyable read with elements of romance, paranormal and mystery coming together in a story that will keep you intrigued to the end.

The setting of the story is spectacular, and the author takes us through the year with great visual effect, as the seasons change so dramatically in the North Carolina mountains. The love stories spanning the 50 years, are interconnected through the cabin that Sarah Grey has bought as a writing retreat, and escape from a life that had become far too predictable.

The relationships between the characters are told in parallel, with flashbacks and letters that reveal the truth about the terrible tragedy back in the 1960s that resulted in present day events.

Marcia Meara shows a deep understanding of human nature and takes time to build up the relationship between Mac and Sarah, allowing the reader an opportunity to engage with the characters in a meaningful way. Equally well told is the love story between Ruthie and Frank. Hopes for their future together were blighted by her past and the evil that was looming on the edges of this idyllic spot. The author does a great job in bringing all these strands from past and present together and creating a tense and frightening build up to the climax in the 1960s and the long lasting aftershocks that cause turmoil in the present day.

What is the mystery behind the terrifying events on one particular night every year and how can it be stopped?  You will need to read the book to find out. Which I highly recommend that you do.

About Marcia Meara

Marcia Meara lives in central Florida, just north of Orlando, with her husband of over thirty years, four big cats, and one small dachshund.

When not writing or blogging, she spends her time gardening, and enjoying the surprising amount of wildlife that manages to make a home in her suburban yard. She enjoys nature. Really, really enjoys it. All of it! Well, almost all of it, anyway. From birds, to furry critters, to her very favorites, snakes. The exception would be spiders, which she truly loathes, convinced that anything with eight hairy legs is surely up to no good. She does not, however, kill spiders anymore, since she knows they have their place in the world. Besides, her husband now handles her Arachnid Catch and Release Program, and she’s good with that.

Spiders aside, the one thing Marcia would like to tell each of her readers is that it’s never too late to make your dreams come true. If, at the age of 69, she could write and publish a book (and thus fulfill 64 years of longing to do that very thing), you can make your own dreams a reality, too. Go for it! What have you got to lose?

  6. I’ve loved this entire series, and am impatiently awaiting the next one. Lovely review of book #1, Sally, and I just know you’ll adore Rabbit once you meet him. I read all four back to back, and I highly recommend doing so.

    • Awww, Debby! So nice of you to say, and I’m utterly thrilled (truly!) that you enjoyed the books so much. I have plans for the next one, but first I need to wrap up my final novella in The Emissary trilogy (more than half done, now), and then I have to make a quick dash back to Riverbend. (My readers are getting testy about how long its been. 😀 ) AND I have your latest Five Kingdoms book to read, myself, The Prince’s Protege. I’m very much looking forward to that one!

Thanks for stopping by here today, and I’m eager to get a few minutes to check your latest photos from my most dreamed about part of the world. (It’s the scenery, you know, and nothing whatsoever to do with men in kilts! Honest! Errm … is my nose growing??) 😀 ❤

  8. Great review, Sally. I’ve had this first book on my ereader forever and will get to it soon. It’s totally Marcia’s fault, as she got me hooked on a certain wizard as well as an inimitable FBI agent, lols 😂

Thanks for sharing. Hugs x 😊

    • Sorry about that, Harmony. But you were RIPE for the plucking where that Wizard was concerned, and you have to admit, as series go, The Dresden Files is everything you could ask for. Scary, dramatic, funny as heck, and absolutely addictive. 😀 So is Preston & Child’s Pendergast series. The good news is, once you’re all caught up, you have breathing room for other books–like say, Wake-Robin Ridge! Hahahaha.

Did you start Proven Guilty? Oh, my stars and garters. It’s been so many years since I read it, it’s like reading for the first time, only better. What a tale!

But back here in the Real World, thanks so much for stopping by to see what Sally had to say about WRR, and taking a minute to comment. It’s GREATLY appreciated! 🙂 ❤

  9. Reblogged this on The Write Stuff and commented:
What a great way to start the day! Sally Cronin has left a beautiful review for Wake-Robin Ridge on her Smorgasbord blog, and I hope some of you guys will take a look at what she has to say. I’m tickled pink that she enjoyed the book so much, and that’s she’s planning to read A Boy Named Rabbit soon, too, when time allows. Hope you’ll check this one out, and will pass it along far and wide, so that others might be interested enough to give Wake-Robin Ridge a read, too. Thanks, and thanks to Sally for such a lovely review! 🙂

  10. What a wonderful way to start my day, Sally! I am so happy you enjoyed Wake-Robin Ridge. This review is lovely and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’ll be sharing for sure!

And I haven’t seen one of the “Darcy’s Corner” covers in a long time. Right after A Boy Named Rabbit came out, I changed the cover to say “Wake-Robin Ridge Book 1.” Seeing it again reminds me of how I had a whole different type of series planned before that little boy came along. 😀 Funny how that happens, isn’t it? My characters lead me around by the nose, you know. 😉

Thank you again for your lovely words, and if I don’t say it often enough, let me just add, as always: You ROCK! 😀 ❤

      • Oh, noooo. I didn’t mean for you to do that. I wasn’t upset about it or anything, just surprised it was still “out there,” and it made me think about how much the focus of the series had changed by Book 2. Plus I realized that I never updated the cover on Goodreads, as I was absent from there for awhile, so it was a good reminder for me to do that. It wasn’t a thing you did wrong, and I sure didn’t mean for you to feel that way, honest. I can’t imagine anyone but me would have even notice, but it was very kind of you to switch it up, even though it wasn’t necessary. You DO rock, you know! 🙂 ❤

  11. This is a great series. I have the latest on my kindle but haven’t yet had a chance to read it. It will be all the better for the anticipation – deferred gratification 🙂

  12. This first book introduces the characters that inhabit this wonderful series. (Well, not all of them.) Start with this one and you’ll find the other books build into something quite, quite magical. I gave this first one a well deserved 5*. The next one introduces Rabbit and he’s probably my favourite character. Ever.
