Delighted to welcome author Charles (Chuck) Bowie to the Cafe and Bookstore with a separate listing for his romantic books written under the name of Alexa Bowie. I am going to feature the latest book in the suspense-thriller series Donovan: Thief for Hire: The Body on the Underwater Road.
About the book
Tricia Parker was a woman with a past; one that led to a marriage break-up and the complete severance of ties to her very wealthy ex-husband and daughter. Fifteen years later, Tricia suddenly appears, wanting to talk to her daughter, and a day later, Tricia’s body washes up on an underwater road. The prime suspects are her daughter and ex-husband, who are summering in St. Andrews.
Friends who see their predicament contact Donovan and Beth, who are no strangers to murder, and who have certain skills in solving crimes.
As Donovan begins piecing together the elements of the case, he happens upon an old acquaintance, a particularly nasty art thief who shouldn’t even be in that part of the country.
The Body On The Underwater Road is a story set in two countries. It’s about estranged families, old money, and secrets. And murder.
One of the recent reviews for the book
This might be my favorite book in the Donovan: Thief for Hire series! There are more books on the way, but so far I’ve enjoyed going on this adventurous and sometimes dangerous life changing journey with Sean Donovan- a unique character unlike most found in thriller/crime fiction novels. It’s always great when a bad guy has redeemable characteristics and is likable, and Donovan is this and so much more. I’m looking forward to the next book and even if this happens to Donovan (it’ll break my heart), I hope the author pulls him back into a life of crime and that Beth is unwittingly dragged along too.
In this book, Donovan is in the midst of solving two crimes. First there’s mischief around the winery he’s part owner in and then he finds himself face to face with seedy criminal and art thief Palu again while helping his friends from Wisconsin come to the rescue of Nick Parker and his daughter Riley when Nick’s estranged wife is found murdered. Soon secrets about the family come to light, and let’s just say with family like this you don’t need enemies. There is a great cast of suspects that kept me guessing until the end.
I liked being swept from New York’s sandy shores to those in Canada and chapter 3 especially made me smile. On a personal note, I’ve never been to Montauk, New York but dear friends of mine traveled there and brought me back a terrific coffee mug and told me a lot of fun stories about their trip. It kinda felt like I knew the place and people; I’ve been to Toronto and Niagara Falls in Canada which made for such a delightful read.
Bravo author Chuck Bowie! Writing an engaging series is tough work and you’re just getting warmed up. This reader and fan is ready for more Donovan!
