Welcome to The Breakfast Show and the top hits of the 1960s.

Each week William and I will select two top hits from the charts starting with 1960 for two weeks followed by 1961 etc..through to 1985. We will also include some of the notable events in those years for the up and coming stars who were centre stage at the time.

Every four weeks at the weekend there will be a spin-off show where we will feature four guests sharing their memories of the music of a particular decade we are working on. An opportunity to share your work and your can find the details: The Breakfast Show 2021

Welcome to our new show and we are excited to share decades of music with you in 2021. Here are the first of my top 1960 hits which I hope you will enjoy.  William.

News Event – July 15th Chubby Checker releases his version of “The Twist” in the US

Chubby Checker – The Twist 

This 1960 hit gave birth to the ‘Twist dance craze’ and peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US and #14 in the UK. ‘The Twist’ was originally recorded by Hank Ballard in 1958.

 

News Event – March 5th Elvis Presley ends 2-year hitch in US Army and on May 12th he debuts on a Frank Sinatra special

Ray Charles – Georgia on my Mind

Rolling Stone magazine named Ray Charles’ version of ‘Georgia on My Mind’ as the 44th greatest song of all time. This song reached #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and #24 in the UK.

The Everly Brothers – Cathy’s Clown

“Cathy’s Clown” is a popular song, written and recorded by The Everly Brothers in 1960. The lyrics describe a man who has been wronged and publicly humiliated by his lover: “Here he comes / That’s Cathy’s clown”.  The song is noted for its unorthodox structure, such as beginning on a chorus and having bridges but no verses. The song was a worldwide success and the best-selling single of the Everly Brothers career. Due to its enduring influence on popular music the song was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2013.

Johnny Kidd & The Pirates – Shakin’ All Over

“Shakin’ All Over” is a song originally performed by Johnny Kidd & the Pirates. The song was written by frontman Johnny Kidd, and his recording of it reached number one on the UK Singles Chart in August 1960. Kidd’s original recording was not a hit outside of Europe, and in other parts of the world “Shakin’ All Over” is much better known in versions by other artists. BurlFish79

Your Hosts for The Breakfast Show

William Price King is an American jazz singer, crooner, and composer.

His interest in music began at an early age when he studied piano and clarinet in high school. At Morehouse College in Atlanta where he grew up, he sang in the Glee Club and studied classical music. After graduation he went off to the Yale School of Music where he earned a Masters degree. From there he journeyed to New York where he created a jazz trio ‘Au Naturel’ which performed in some of the hottest venues in Manhattan including gigs on Broadway and the famous ‘Rainbow Room.’ These gigs opened doors for performances in Montreal and a European tour.

While touring Europe he met a lovely French lady, Jeanne Maïstre, who, a year later became his wife. King left the group ‘Au Naturel’ and settled in the south of France where he started a new life on the French Riviera, opening his own music school – the “Price King Ecole Internationale de Chant.” He has had the pleasure over the years of seeing many of his students excel as singers on a professional level, and some going on to become national celebrities. He continues to coach young singers today, in his spare time.

Sally Cronin is an author, blogger and broadcaster who enjoyed four years as part of the team on Onda Cero International’s English speaking morning show in Marbella and then for two years as a presenter on Expressfm the local radio station in Portsmouth. She co-presented two ‘Drive Time’ shows a week with Adrian Knight, hosted the live Thursday Afternoon Show and The Sunday Morning Show guests including musicians and authors. Following this she became Station Director for a local internet television station for two years, producing and presenting the daily news segment, outside broadcasts and co-presenting the Adrian and Sally chat show live on Friday evenings.

She and her husband David have now returned to Ireland where they live on the Wexford Coast where she blogs and continues to write books.

      • My interest in music started when I was about eleven. I was very taken with the series, Victory at Sea and Richard Rogers music score. The series made it’s debut in October of 1952. My dad, who died in 1951, served as a naval aviator in the Pacific, I was enthralled because it was his story as well as that of America during that time.. I then started listening to other musical scores by Rogers and Hammerstein and became hooked on music. I even went so far as to get records by Edith Piaf and Les Compagnons de la Chanson (Three Bells) When Bill Haley and the Comets hit in late 1954 I was infected with a life long love of popular music. I did two stints as a disk jockey, one in college and one when I “retired” at fifty. Both 50,000 watt stations. So I guess I can say I have been active in music for 68 years. Would be fun to reminise.

    • So glad to know that you have a passion for music, too, John. A disk jockey, wow, that must have been lots of fun. As a child my favorite popular songs came from Detroit, how about that? I sang in Detroit in 1969, as a soloist with the Morehouse College Glee Club. Ah, you know “Les Compagnons de la Chanson,” I’m impressed. Edith Piaf is one of my favorites, too. What a great singer/ songwriter. I am so looking forward to your input. I am sorry to know that you lost your father at an early age, that must have been a difficult moment to get through.   3. Okay… I am in seventh heaven! This series is so exciting, and I absolutely love the songs on this first post – plus the notes on what happened. I remember being at a friend’s house and playing the The Twist record. Then I learned to do the dance, and my mother forced me to twist in front of all her friends. I thought I was the only one who loved, loved Cathy’s Clown! I can still sing all the words. I’m sure you can, too. And Ray Charles…ah! Thank you Sally and William.

  6. I’m already loving this new morning show Sal and Will. I enjoy the ‘fun facts’ of the year before the songs too. I had no idea that song which I recognized, was called Cathy’s Clown, lol. Maybe a little ahead of my time as I was still in diapers. My teen songs were the 70s, although I enjoy 60s and 80s. Good fun all around. And you may be right Sal, that song, Shakin All Over is very familiar but definitely by another artist. One of the classics! 🙂 Good fun! Hugs xoxo

  7. What a great idea! Love this. I was the self-appointed President of the Everly Brother’s fan club in our small town. Cathy’s Clown is a great choice. And I remember when we all learned to do the twist. What fun times.

  10. Great choices of songs. I live in Florida near the Georgia border and Ray Charles’ rendition of Georgia on my Mind is the official state song. Hoagy Carmichael, the composer, wrote many other memorable songs like Stardust. I learned these songs from my dad and still love this era of music.

      • Yes. It will be an interesting day. As I live so close to the border, I’ve been subject to the unending political ads from both sides. I’ll be glad for the break after today although they say the results may not be in for days or weeks. Happy New Year to you as well. 2021 has to be a better year. At least this year, we can truly say that hindsight is 2020.

One of my favourites, Cathy Clown and Chubby Checker…Alan is the best twist and shake man I know and even now if it comes on he still has the moves it is his greatest regret in life that he didn’t become a dancer …his father was dead set against it such a shame…A great post and some good tunes Hugs xx

  16. Excellent choices all! I remember when The Twist was a very big deal. I wanted to learn how to do it, but my mother was having none of it. I don’t remember the last time I heard “Shakin’ All Over”!

  18. This is going to be a lot of fun for me, considering I was born in 1958. The Ray Charles video is not available to me, but I’ve heard it many times before. I’m sure it was merely a coincidence, but tomorrow Georgia is choosing United States senators. Georgia is definitely on my mind.
