Smorgasbord Book Reviews – #Mystery #Paranormal – The Light (Wake-Robin Ridge Book 4) by Marcia Meara

I loved the Wake-Robin Ridge series by Marcia Meara and this week I have read book four in the series… The Light.

About the book

The Magic is Back!

For Robert MacKenzie Cole—or Rabbit, as he’s known to all—the chance to accompany his family to see North Carolina’s infamous Brown Mountain Lights has him nearly dizzy with excitement. And what better night to watch this unexplained phenomenon unfold than Halloween?

But when the entrancing, unpredictable lights show up, Rabbit gets far more than he bargained for. He’s gifted with what folks in the Appalachians call “the Sight,” and it’s this extrasensory perception that enables him to spot the one light different from all the rest.

In his biggest challenge to date, Rabbit—aided by his daddy and his newest friend, Austin Dupree— begins a quest to learn more about the mysterious light. Their investigation unveils a web of cons and corruption none of them expected and exposes a brutal murder along the way.

Throughout all, Rabbit is unfaltering in his commitment to do whatever it takes to understand the truth behind the glowing orb and to determine how he can help it. After all, it followed him home.

My review for the book 7th January 2021

A delightful addition to the Wake-Robin Ridge series and as always the star of the story is a little boy called Rabbit. An old soul who sees far beyond human comprehension, he still retains his gentle and loving nature. He also sees far more than a boy of eleven should, and yet his determination to help those in limbo and their living loved ones, is too powerful to deny.

In this chapter in the series,  Rabbit’s family extends to new friends and those who have lost their way. Collaborations and combining ‘The Sight’ with modern technology takes this current investigation into the depths of the stunning Appalachian mountains building the suspense as the story behind the light runs parallel.

As always the author engages us with her scenic descriptions and charming characters, weaving an intriguing mystery which unfolds with some surprise revelations. Heartwarming and thought provoking this series is a must read. I do recommend that you begin with Wake-Robin Ridge, followed by A Boy Named Rabbit and Harbinger.

Marcia Meara lives in central Florida, just north of Orlando, with her husband of over thirty years, four big cats, and one small dachshund.

When not writing or blogging, she spends her time gardening, and enjoying the surprising amount of wildlife that manages to make a home in her suburban yard. She enjoys nature. Really, really enjoys it. All of it! Well, almost all of it, anyway. From birds, to furry critters, to her very favorites, snakes. The exception would be spiders, which she truly loathes, convinced that anything with eight hairy legs is surely up to no good. She does not, however, kill spiders anymore, since she knows they have their place in the world. Besides, her husband now handles her Arachnid Catch and Release Program, and she’s good with that.

Spiders aside, the one thing Marcia would like to tell each of her readers is that it’s never too late to make your dreams come true. If, at the age of 69, she could write and publish a book (and thus fulfill 64 years of longing to do that very thing), you can make your own dreams a reality, too. Go for it! What have you got to lose?

Thanks for dropping by today and I hope you have enjoyed my review and will check out this book and the others by Marcia Meara. Thanks Sally

  1. Congratulations to Marcia on that great review. I’ve read this entire series and positively love it!

    • As you can see, I’m WAY behind on my blog reading, Mae, but not because I don’t care. (Blame it on a houseful of grandkids for two weeks, I guess, though I wouldn’t trade a moment of that!) I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed the WRR series, and Rabbit, in particular. He’s been a joy to write about, and I definitely have some spinoff novellas planned for him as soon as I finish the Riverbend novella I’m working on right now. Stay tuned. 😀

And thanks so much for taking the time to comment. I’m glad I finally caught up enough to find this. 🙂 ❤

  3. I’m a fully paid-up member of The Rabbit Fan Club. He’s such a distinctive, simple, complex and delightful character and I love him to bits!

    • Thanks, Michael. I will say that you shouldn’t start with the 4th book, though. There’s a LOT about Rabbit–who he is and what he can do–explained in the book where he joins the searies. (Book 2, A Boy Named Rabbit ) This book, The Light will make a lot more sense and be far more meaningful if you’ve at least read 2 and 3 first.

Having said all of that, I hope you enjoy the books, even if you decide to read them out of order. You just won’t know much about all of the players and why they act the way they do. But I still hope you enjoy them, either way. Thanks for stopping by today! 🙂

  4. I skipped your review, Sally, since this is my next Marcia read, for sure. I don’t want even a hint of what it’s about. Ha ha. I love being surprised. I’m sure it’s wonderful (like all of her books). I can’t wait.

  5. Reblogged this on The Write Stuff and commented:
Had a wonderful surprise this morning when Sally Cronin reviewed The Light, my fourth Wake-Robin Ridge book, over on her fabulous Smorgasbord blog. Released at the very beginning of the pandemic, this book didn’t get much promotion from me, so I’d be extra grateful if you could take a moment to share her post far and wide. Thanks so much, and my heartfelt thanks to Sally for such lovely words. 🙂 ❤

  6. What a wonderful way to start this day, Sally! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your beautiful review. I’m so happy that you’ve enjoyed the Wake-Robin Ridge series, and that TheLight didn’t disappoint.

Rabbit has been the most fun of any character I’ve written (so far), and I do hope to continue his tales for a few more years, yet. I’m working on a Riverbend novella now, but next up, I think I’ll do a story involving Rabbit and his favorite of the new characters from The Light, so I hope you’ll look forward to checking in with the Coles again in a few months.

In the meantime, just know that your review has given me a HUGE smile this morning, and I hope some of your followers will check out the series, and will enjoy meeting Rabbit when he makes his way out of the wilderness to Wake-Robin Ridge. Big Hugs to you!! 🙂 ❤

    • Thanks so much, Toni! I hope you get a chance to read the series one day. Would love to hear your thoughts on Rabbit, especially. 🙂

And thanks for your compliment on the cover. It’s a favorite of mine, too. My cover designer is a dear friend and graphic artist who’s done all my books, though she has now moved on to doing her own art. (But she promises she’ll always be there to do my covers, so I’m truly blessed, as I love her work.)

Glad you stopped by today! 🙂
