Welcome to the Children’s Reading Room with books for ages up to twelve years old.
Today I am delighted to welcome a new author to the Cafe and Bookstore with her books for adults and the Reading Room for her children’s book, Maria Matthews with The Runaway Schoolhouse
About the book
Clearie, a one-hundred-year-old schoolhouse, is fed up.
For so long, he has helped children get educated but been rewarded only by their complaints about how much they hate school.
He longs to get away
His dream is to go to France, a country he has heard so much about in geography lessons over the years – but how could a schoolhouse possibly travel?
Eventually he comes up with a plan and enlists the help of two students, the Buggy twins: but not everything works out as he had hoped.
With an attic full of crazy crabs, led by the fearless Lancelot, his journey is less than enjoyable and, in his absence, the school system falls apart.
Will Clearie’s dreams come true and the children get their wish for schooldays to end forever? Or has everyone bitten off more than they can chew?
One of the reviews for the book
Review written by:Second Class Navan Educate Together NS
We are a school in Navan, a town in Ireland. We read “The Runaway Schoolhouse” by Maria Matthews in May 2017. The pupils in our class are aged 7, 8 and 9 years old.
We could not be happier about the book. We found it extremely funny. There are lots of exciting adventures that the Schoolhouse Clearie, the teachers and the pupils get up to.
We all really enjoyed reading the novel and would recommend it to any child, teacher or school who wishes to use it for lessons.
“The Runaway Schoolhouse” even made some of us cry with laughter.
Would definitely recommend the book to any teacher to use it for English and Art lessons, it’s jam packed with a creative, funny and unpreditable story line and the pupils in our class were captivated by the novel.
As a teacher I will certainly be using this novel again in future classes!

About Maria Matthews
I live in County Meath with my husband of thirty-four years, two grown children, one granddaughter, one crazy collie, and one golden labrador who doesn’t know it is ok to think. All of whom help to feed and mulch my imagination.
Short Stories Published in Women’s magazines encouraged me to continue, my last story appeared in The Holly Bough Magazine at Christmas 2016. My self published book is a step closer to discovering if I can find an audience. Moving On is a light-hearted Romance of 56,000 words.
I was lucky to find Emu Ink who helped and edited my children’s book: The Runaway Schoolhouse which is available from Amazon and from Emu Ink. Currently, I am working on my next children’s book; Ezio’s Rainbow
