Each week William and I will select two top hits from the charts starting with 1960 for two weeks followed by 1961 etc..through to 1985. We will also include some of the notable events in those years for the up and coming stars who were centre stage at the time.
Every four weeks at the weekend there will be a spin-off show where we will feature four guests sharing their memories of the music of a particular decade we are working on. An opportunity to share your work and your can find the details: The Breakfast Show 2021
Welcome to our show and we are excited to share decades of music with you in 2021. Here is my second selection of top 1963 hits which I hope you will enjoy. William.
News Event: May 15th 5th Grammy Awards: I Left My Heart In San Francisco, Robert Goulet wins
Peter, Paul, and Mary – Blowin’ in the wind
‘Blowin’ in the wind’ was written by Bob Dylan as a protest song and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1994. In 2004 it was ranked #14 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
News Event: June 22nd “Little” Stevie Wonder aged 13 releases his first single “Fingertips” (first live non-studio recording to go to No. 1 on Billboard)

‘It’s my party’ was the first hit single produced by Quincy Jones and Gore’s second biggest hit. It peaked at #1 in the US Pop and R&B charts and #9 in the UK Singles chart.
News Event: September 29th Rolling Stones 1st tour (opening act for Bo Diddley & Everly Bros)
Now time for my picks from 1963 and these are tracks that dominated my teenage years and reinforced my love of music.
The Searchers – Sweets for my Sweet
“Sweets for My Sweet” is a song written by the songwriting team of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, originally recorded by The Drifters. In 1963 the song was released by Merseybeat band the Searchers as their debut single, reaching #1 on the UK Single Chart for two weeks that August The Searchers’ version was also issued in the US in the spring of 1964, but failed to chart.
News Events: November 29th “I Want to Hold Your Hand” single released by the Beatles in the United Kingdom
Brian Poole & The Tremeloes – Do You Love Me
Like many American R&B songs of the 1960s, “Do You Love Me?” was covered by a number of British groups. Three British groups who recorded their own versions of the song were Brian Poole and the Tremeloes (who hit #one with it in the UK Singles Chart after learning it from Liverpool’s Faron’s Flamingos),the Dave Clark Five, and The Hollies on their 1964 album Stay with the Hollies.
News Event: December 10th 6-year old Donny Osmond’s singing debut on Andy Williams Show

Your Hosts for The Breakfast Show
William Price King is an American jazz singer, crooner, and composer.
His interest in music began at an early age when he studied piano and clarinet in high school. At Morehouse College in Atlanta where he grew up, he sang in the Glee Club and studied classical music. After graduation he went off to the Yale School of Music where he earned a Masters degree. From there he journeyed to New York where he created a jazz trio ‘Au Naturel’ which performed in some of the hottest venues in Manhattan including gigs on Broadway and the famous ‘Rainbow Room.’ These gigs opened doors for performances in Montreal and a European tour.
While touring Europe he met a lovely French lady, Jeanne Maïstre, who, a year later became his wife. King left the group ‘Au Naturel’ and settled in the south of France where he started a new life on the French Riviera, opening his own music school – the “Price King Ecole Internationale de Chant.” He has had the pleasure over the years of seeing many of his students excel as singers on a professional level, and some going on to become national celebrities. He continues to coach young singers today, in his spare time.

I am thrilled that you enjoyed our selection of songs, Jennie. I would have loved to hear you sing, and you chose a great wake up song for your kids. How lucky they are. All the best. Hugs

Another wonderful week of songs! I can still sing all the words to “It’s My Party” and “Blowin’ in the Wind.” I had no idea that The Rolling Stones first tour was was with Bo Diddley and the Everly Brothers. Somehow I think they didn’t like the Stones, yet the audience did. Do you hear the backup singers in “Sweets For My Sweet?” That could me and you, Sally. Had I been in the UK in 1963, I would have loved The Tremeloes rendition of “Do You Love Me”. The Contours really nailed it, and I have to say that the Boston Robotics dancing to the song is the best thing that has happened to to R&B in a long time. My children ask (beg) for this song every day. It’s their song when they wake up from nap. A whole new generation loves this song, and I get to hear it every day. Win-win. Thank you Sally and William!

So happy that you are enjoying all these songs Jennie and that they are bringing back memories.. and yes I would have loved to have been right in the middle of all that 60s music magic… I hope you and your group will be able to get back to some wedding singing soon…I am sure some of these tracks would be a hit with every generation… as it is with your children.. you are giving them a great gift..hugsx

It is, Sally! I think our group wedding dancing days may be a memory… but you never know. “It’s not over till the fat lady sings” should be “It’s not over till the old ladies dance.” Right? I am so glad to share this 60’s music with my students. They love it!

Interesting songs this week. I remember that song “It’s my party”, and thought it was from the 50s lol. Sal, you got me again on your songs, unfamiliar with British band pre Beatles lol ❤

“It’s my party” was one of the songs they played the most on the radio, way back then. The melody was quite catchy. All the best to you, Debby. Hugs

I love The Breakfast Show posts. I had not heard of Brian Poole and the Tremeloes. I couldn’t watch the one you posted Sally, not available in my country, but I found one on youtube to listen to. Always love these visits back in time.

Thats the feeling, William! Sometimes we need to dream ourselves back into the past. Maybe not really the “good old time”, but as Rumfield had said “Good old Europe”. Lol Enjoy your week as well, and please stay save. Michael

I am delighted that I already know two of the songs this week, Sally. I am not as big a musical philistine as I thought I was. I enjoyed It’s my party very much.

Lol.. glad that we are getting into familiar territory Robbie, these songs hung around into the 70s partly because the airwaves were not as crowded with new artists and tracks as they are today. I don’t for one minute think you are a philistine about anything.. hugsxx

Oh you’re singing my songs. 😀 I grew up with classical music, but this was about the time I was given a little ‘trannie’ a transistor radio with tinny sound but portable! And suddenly I discovered pop music. I remember taking the dog for long walks, listening to the trannie the whole time. 🙂

That’s great. I, too, got off to a classical music start, and my portable radio played a role in my pop and jazz initiation. Glad you enjoyed. Hugs

I did, very much. Isn’t it interesting that technology can change, or at least expand, one’s taste in music?

Paul Stookey (Real name Noel) went to my high school and was a couple of years ahead. He would come back and do assemblies. He was very funny. When the group became wildly successful they all came to the school and did a concert. I was gone by then but they brought the house down. Good selections.

It is better than it was a couple of years ago but David has kept me on Windows 7 and although they no longer support it.. he does and keeps me going. I used to embrace change but now I am beginning to dig my heels in with all these disney world concoctions all the sites are adopting..xx
