Smorgasbord Children’s Reading Room – #Reviews -#Adventure D.L. Finn, #Safety Miriam Hurdle, #Flamingos #HealthyEating Wanda Luthman

Welcome to the Children’s Reading Room and some recent reviews for the books on the shelves for ages up to 12.

The first author is D.L. Finn with her book for older children An Unusual Island.

About the book

When Janine’s parents win a vacation to a private island, it’s the same week as her and her twin brother’s 16th birthday. Cool! She can’t wait to lounge on the beach and let the staff pamper her! Much to her disappointment, though, they leave the island to go sightseeing on a boat. Unlike the rest of her family, bouncing around the ocean isn’t her idea of fun. Even when her brother gets their dad to stop the boat to investigate the neon sea creature that he is sure is following them–nothing. Losing her new red hat is the highlight of her trip until an unexpected storm hits, and they shipwreck on an uncharted island. After tending to some wounds from the crash, they search the island in hopes of finding human civilization. Although they don’t find what they are looking for, it appears they aren’t alone. When they return to their campsite—a fully cooked dinner is waiting for them! Why? And a better question is why did they eat it? It was as if they stepped into a fairytale– or nightmare. Who is on the island with them and what do they want?

Pete Springer 4.0 out of 5 stars A mix of fantasy with realistic fiction.  Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2021

When a family of four (Dad, Mom, and two fifteen-year-old twins, Justin and Justine) win a trip to an unknown island near Hawaii, they are excited about their trip on a boat to their private destination. They end up on a different island when their boat is damaged in a storm. Many mysterious things begin to happen that make them realize they are not alone.

The family finds themselves in the middle of a conflict between two factions of people. The family doesn’t know whom to trust—those who follow the old ways or another group who call themselves Freedom Fighters. The island is also the home to many gigantic bird-like creatures and other unusual phenomena. Will the family ever get off the island, or are they destined to remain there embroiled in the conflict? No spoilers.

This story is more for the science fiction or fantasy reader. If you like unusual characters and strange happenings, this book could be a good fit for you.

Miriam Hurdle’s newest book for children has received some lovely reviews and here is one of the recent five star recommendations.Tina Lost in a Crowd t

About the book

Tina invited her friend Erica to attend a popular Tchaikovsky’s Spectacular concert on a summer evening with her parents. During the intermission, her dad left the seat to buy some snacks. Tina and Erica followed him wanting to use the restroom. The shoving crowd pushed them away, and they lost sight of him. It would be impossible to fight through the 18,000 people to find him or go back to Tina’s mom. What would the girls do?

This story tells about what happened to Tina and Erica after they got lost. Children can adapt to the learning from different situations they may observe or encounter. Adults could have discussions with the children about the situations to help them develop problem-solving skills.

‘Tina Lost in a Crowd’ by Miriam Hurdle is a cute little, heart-warming story of two girls who get lost while they are following their dad. Two friends Tina and Erica are excited when they get an opportunity to go to a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. During intermission, they get up to go to the restroom and can’t find Mr. Tyler, Tina’s dad. Do they get scared? How do they handle the situation?

Well-illustrated and written in a simple style, the story conveys some subtle messages to children as well as parents. Mrs. Tyler is a loving mom and plans a number of activities for the summer; she agrees to invite Erica and understands her daughter so well. Tina is a calm and confident girl and could inspire many. She knows what to do when lost. I could connect with her, as I too got lost in a similar situation but wasn’t as wise as Tina!
I would recommend this book to all the parents of young children who wish to raise responsible children.

Vikki N. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great gift for young child  Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2021

Purchased as a valentine gift for a young female neighbor. She enjoys reading the book and likes the lesson Freddie gave her; she will be more adventurous in her selection of foods. The pictures are colorful and attractive for young readers; the text is easy enough she can read it alone or share with a friend.
