It appears at #384 on Rolling Stone’s list of The Greatest Songs of All Time. The song was performed by Irene Cara, who played the role of Coco Hernandez in the original film. It was also her debut single as a recording artist. The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1980, and the Golden Globe Award the same year. Your Hosts for The Breakfast Show

William Price King is an American jazz singer, crooner, and composer.

His interest in music began at an early age when he studied piano and clarinet in high school. At Morehouse College in Atlanta where he grew up, he sang in the Glee Club and studied classical music. After graduation he went off to the Yale School of Music where he earned a Masters degree. From there he journeyed to New York where he created a jazz trio ‘Au Naturel’ which performed in some of the hottest venues in Manhattan including gigs on Broadway and the famous ‘Rainbow Room.’ These gigs opened doors for performances in Montreal and a European tour.

While touring Europe he met a lovely French lady, Jeanne Maïstre, who, a year later became his wife. King left the group ‘Au Naturel’ and settled in the south of France where he started a new life on the French Riviera, opening his own music school – the “Price King Ecole Internationale de Chant.” He has had the pleasure over the years of seeing many of his students excel as singers on a professional level, and some going on to become national celebrities. He continues to coach young singers today, in his spare time.

  2. Thank you both for this week’s choices – especially Fame. I used to watch the series every week and wish I was there myself! Couldn’t decide whether to cast myself as an actor or a dancer – not that I was talented in either field. 🙂

  3. Oh, the memories “The Wall” brings. My two daughters, when they were very small loved to grab a hairbrush and sing at the top of their lungs, “We don’t need no education…” 🙂 Thanks for the memory, William and Sally!

  4. Another bunch of winners for me. I loved Fame, and remember buying an actual record of THe Wall and sending it to a friend in what was then Communist Czechoslovakia because he couldn’t get it. Working My Way Back to You is so darn danceable!

  5. Fame! Oh my. That was my daughter´s theme song. It still makes me think of her every time I hear it. The movie was so good, all about striving for your goals and not giving up. And the fashions it inspired. Remember leg warmers?? I had to play it over a couple of times. Thanks.

  6. For this rock music fan, the clear favourite here is Pink Floyd. The single had the distinction of being the last UK #1 of the 70s and the first of the 80s, having got to the top just before Christmas 1979. A great record, and the movie is incredible!

  7. Not a dud (in my opinion!) among them. A good friend and I guiltily confessed that we loved the TV series Fame when it first came out and the title track is stirring stuff. For me, Pink Floyd is up there in my top ten of favourite groups. I was lucky enough to see one of their early gigs when I was a student and I think I have everything by them on my trusty iPod classic. Many thanks to both of you. x

  8. Four great tracks to start the day.
I hadn’t heard that version of ‘Another Brick in the Wall’, I remember the animated video version!
Loved Fame, the series and the film……
Definately got my feet moving today.
All great iconic tracks and cheery too.
    Thank you

  9. Thank you, Sally and William, for sharing two of my favourite songs, Another Brick in the Wall and Fame. Whenever I have to do something that requires courage, like speak on TV or Radio or present to Government, I listen to Fame to give me strength. I also play it for my boys when they have something taxing ahead like exams.

  10. Four fantastic selections. Pink Floyd are iconic of course but so is Billy Preston after playing on I think it was Hey Jude with the Beatles. Syreeta married Stevie Wonder.. The whole world knows Irene Cara and those legs but I remember rushing out to get the Detroit Sinners record when it came out. Soul perfection to me.
