Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – The Breakfast Show with William Price King and Sally Cronin – Chart Hits 1994 Part Two – Celine Dion, Prince, Wet Wet Wet, Corona

Welcome to our show and we are excited to share decades of music with you in 2022.

Here is my second selection of top 1994 hits which I hope you will enjoy.

Celine Dion – The Power of love

“The Power of Love” was the 8th best selling single of 1994 in the US and the best selling single by a female artist. This was Dion’s first #1 song in the US and Australia, and her second #1 in Canada while making the top ten around the globe. “The Power of Love” won the ASCAP Pop Award for Most Performed Song in the United States and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Single, two Billboard Music Awards for Hot 100 Single of the Year, and for the Juno Award for Single of the Year.

Prince – The most beautiful girl in the world

“The most beautiful girl in the world” was the lead single from the 1994 EP “The Beautiful Experience” and the 1995 album “The Gold Experience.” The song became a worldwide hit and established Prince’s ability to succeed commercially under his new name, peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the UK it peaked at #1 as it did in many countries across Europe. The video was directed by Prince and film director Antoine Fugua. The song was used, in part, in the Miss America pageant in 1994.

July 16th “The Three Tenors”, Plácido Domingo, José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti, perform in Los Angeles, California

Here are my second picks from 1994

Wet Wet Wet – Love is all Around

“Love Is All Around” is a song recorded by English rock band the Troggs, featuring a string quartet and a ‘tick tock’ sound on percussion, in D-major. It was written by lead singer Reg Presley and was purportedly inspired by a television transmission of the Joy Strings Salvation Army band’s “Love That’s All Around”. The song was first released as a single in the UK in October 1967, peaking at number 5.
“Love Is All Around” has been covered by numerous artists. Wet Wet Wet’s cover, for the soundtrack to the 1994 film Four Weddings and a Funeral, was an international hit and spent 15 consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart. wetwetwetmusic

Corona – Rhythm of the Night

“The Rhythm of the Night” is the debut single by Italian Eurodance group Corona. It was released in 1993 in Italy, then elsewhere the following year. The song is the title track of their 1995 debut studio album The Rhythm of the Night. It was written by Francesco Bontempi, Annerley Emma Gordon, Giorgio Spagna, Pete Glenister and Mike Gaffey, and produced by Bontempi. The vocals for this song were performed by Italian singer Giovanna Bersola, who is not credited on the single and does not appear in the music video The song was a worldwide hit in 1994, peaking at number-one in Italy, and within the top five in most of Europe, while in the US, it fell short of the top ten, reaching number eleven on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cash Box Top 100. Your Hosts for The Breakfast Show

William Price King is an American jazz singer, crooner, and composer.

His interest in music began at an early age when he studied piano and clarinet in high school. At Morehouse College in Atlanta where he grew up, he sang in the Glee Club and studied classical music. After graduation he went off to the Yale School of Music where he earned a Masters degree. From there he journeyed to New York where he created a jazz trio ‘Au Naturel’ which performed in some of the hottest venues in Manhattan including gigs on Broadway and the famous ‘Rainbow Room.’ These gigs opened doors for performances in Montreal and a European tour.

While touring Europe he met a lovely French lady, Jeanne Maïstre, who, a year later became his wife. King left the group ‘Au Naturel’ and settled in the south of France where he started a new life on the French Riviera, opening his own music school – the “Price King Ecole Internationale de Chant.” He has had the pleasure over the years of seeing many of his students excel as singers on a professional level, and some going on to become national celebrities. He continues to coach young singers today, in his spare time.

  1. I had no idea of the name of the singer of the Rhythm of the Night either. There are some songs that seem to live in a vacuum for me and never thought of following the performers. Great selections, as usual. Thanks, William and Sally!

  3. Great choices for me, since I know the artists but missed most of these songs. I know Love is All Around from Four Weddings and Funeral, a movie I’ve watched at least three times! And I remember the Troggs version. Thanks!

  4. Celine Dion had one of those voices that grabbed you, no matter your preference in music. All of these are great choices, Sally and William. Thanks for sharing!

  5. The Power of Love is such a powerful song. And Wet Wet Wet’s version of Love is All Around is one of my all-time favourite songs. (And they are so doggone cute!) All great tunes today, thanks!

  6. I loved the Troggs version of Love is All Around and, like Becky, I have the 45. I usually prefer the original versions but I was blown away by the Wet Wet Wet one and it’s the one I’d choose now. Many thanks for a lovely interlude in my day! xx

  8. This week a more romantic selection of songs… I loved them all.
I’d forgotten about the Trogs version of ‘Love is all around’, so just had to check it out. Both were great.
Today my listening was in two parts with a zumba in between. Just as well as they were definatley dreamy songs today.
Thanks again for the Tuesday musical memories. I would say start but today it was definatley a late start and a carry on so I’m off to Carry on now!

  9. My favourite of these was Love Is All Around: though I really did prefer the original this version worked well in the movie. Reg’s bank balance must have enjoyed it, too 😊

  10. Celine and the Power of Love, I have a memory of Jennifer Rush singing this. Not sure. Celine is an amazing performer, a megastar. I am not keen on female vocals, although I’ve managed my fair share of female singers and songwriters, she is exceptional. such an emotional performer, If you ever watch her singing Immortality with the Bee Gees it will reduce you to tears I am sure. Having worked with her vocal producer, multi-award-winning, Humberto Gatica, and his engineer, making a record with one of our singers, I can tell you that he can get blood out of a stone, but with Celine, it comes easy. Pure magic. I like Wet, Wet, Wet. Prince was awesome, such a multi-talented artist. Not heard of the other artist, Corona. Thanks, both. Enjoyable trip down memory lane. xx
