This week – Thanksgiving and Strawberry Jam
Thanksgiving
Time
of year
to rejoice
with family
and those that we love.
breaking bread together
in peace and in harmony,
putting aside differences,
at one with the world and each other,
content to count the blessings that we share.
Strawberry Jam
Margaret sat in the sitting room of the nursing home, in a chintz covered chair by the window. She couldn’t remember why she was there, but perhaps the family had brought her out for tea. She tried to think of her daughter’s name; a pretty girl in a blue overall who spoke gently with a lovely smile. Margaret looked at the plate on her lap, lifting the contents to her lips, it tasted delicious with something red and sweet that stirred distant and happy memories. Jam, strawberry jam, on scones, with butter and cream. How could she have forgotten?

One of the reviews for Life’s Rich Tapestry: Woven in Words
Sally Cronin has offered a rich tapestry of life’s mysteries, emotions and surprises. All in a mix of poetry and prose. Not one for poetry myself–since those required English courses in high school and less so in college, I generally find it unfathomable and unappealing. NOT SO, Cronin’s verses. Her vivid imagery touches the heart and soul. For a fiction writer like me, I find her verses inspiring for future application to my own prose.
Equally compelling is the microfiction and the short stories. Yes, it’s an odd mix of genre and style. Don’t let that stop you from reading this even if it’s not in your usual bailiwick. You will be rewarded by broadening your horizon–if necessary, as in my case. Cronin is adept at weaving this tapestry.
Thank you for listening and if you would like to know more about my books and their reviews you can find them on my books page Sally’s Books and Reviews 2022

Great sentiment, Sally. I would hope that Thanksgiving might be a time when some family and friends could bury the hatchet and focus on what’s really important—relationships.

Lovely, Sally. I love Strawberry Jam. It shows how strong the senses of taste and smell are for memory. Maybe that’s something we should all remember. Invoke those senses when trying to remember, or remind someone of something.

Thanks Viv.. I know my mother still remembered music and songs which they believe is the last memory to go… also she loved to look at old photographs and recognised herself when young and those around her.. hugsx

Beautiful poem and the flash fiction is so true to life. Memory is a very funny thing, but some things we’re unlikely to forget. Thanks, Sally.

Glad you enjoyed Olga… I was fascinated to discover along the way what my mother still remembered… and how she only saw her younger self in the mirror. ♥

Hi Luciana.. we don’t celebrate here in Ireland either, but so many of my friends do. We lived there for two years when we were first married and it all felt a little strange but the we were made so welcome and included in holidays such as Thanksgiving that it has become special to us too…♥
