Smorgasbord Book Promotions – Menagerie: A Collection of Thirteen #Mystery, #Suspense, and Contemporary Short Stories by Joan Hall

Delighted to share the news of the latest release by Joan Hallon pre-order until 13th January Menagerie: A Collection of Thirteen Mystery, Suspense, and Contemporary Short Stories

About the collection

King’s. The Tower of London. Glass. What do these have in common?

Each is a famous menagerie.

While this Menagerie doesn’t focus on exotic animals, it does contain a collection of stories that explore various trials people face and how their reactions shape their worlds.

Survivors of a haunted bridge. Women who wait while their husbands fight a war. Former partners reuniting to solve a cold-case murder.

These are just three of the thirteen stories in this compendium, encompassing past and present, natural and supernatural, legend and reality. The genres and timelines are varied, but there’s a little something for everyone who enjoys reading about simpler times and small-town life.

One of the recent reviews for Cold Dark Night

Joy Shelton-York  5.0 out of 5 stars Very well-crafted mystery  Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2023

I love well-crafted mysteries that keep me guessing and Cold Dark Night by author Joan Hall is certainly one of them. Interwoven with rich history, folklore, and interesting characters, this story kept me engaged and quickly turning the pages to find out what was going to happen next.

Jason and Tami Montgomery just moved to Madeira, New Mexico, where Jason accepted the position of Police Chief. They purchase a Victorian century home that Tami falls in love with but soon discovers it has a dark past. As a former reporter and owner of her own local newspaper, Tami is used to digging into stories that interest her. Joining a research project with the Historical Society is the perfect vehicle for her desire to learn more about the history of Madeira, her new home, and why so many former police chiefs have met an untimely death, many of whom lived in the very same house.

This excellently paced story is told by characters in both past and present timelines, moving back and forth in time as events and clues unfold. I loved the authenticity of the characters. Tami’s tenacity and openness was a perfect balance to Jason’s practical and pragmatic approach. There are plenty of twists and turns and entertaining subplots that move the story forward. Ms. Hall does a great job of building interest and suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery thriller.
