Delighted to welcome Andrew McDowell to the blog with his fantasy novel Mystical Greenwood (One with Nature Book 1)
About the book
Dermot is a fifteen-year-old boy in the kingdom of Denú. He has always longed for more in life. Then everything changes after he sees a gryphon and crosses paths with a reclusive healer.
Soon, he and his brother Brian have no choice but to leave their home. They embark on a journey through many forests. They meet an old man and unicorns, witness an important birth, and must evade fire-breathing dragons and dark-armored soldiers that serve an evil sorcerer determined to subjugate Denú.
A legendary coven must now return after years in hiding. Dermot and Brian slowly realize there is something deeper among the trees and creatures, but is there also something more about themselves? Can they protect those they love, or will all Denú be consumed by darkness?
One of the reviews for the book
The story centers on the relationships the young man (named Dermot) has with his family, his community, and with the new people he meets. As a young man, he dreams of a life beyond his simple village. He gets much more than he bargains for upon meeting a sorceress in hiding. As he meets more and more people, he forges new relationships, and comes to clearer sense of self and his place in the world. Along the way he discovers that he is an “empath”: he can tell what any animal or creature is feeling in response to the story’s events. Ultimately, he commits himself to fight for the side of good – protecting Nature and all of her creatures from the forces of evil.
One strong sentiment woven through the story is a reverent appreciation for nature. The author creates great word-pictures of the natural settings. Under the guidance of the sorceress, Dermot comes to realize that there is much more to Nature than most people realize. Too much is taken for granted. Part of his mission is to share with the world all of the true wonders of the natural world.
My favorite reads were the fights and battles ! The author shows great creativity and imagination in narrating how all of Nature’s creatures, from the smallest insects to the greatest dragons, can join forces and fight for their side !

Thanks, Harmony. It’s actually a new edition. The original edition came out years ago, but the original publisher had to shut down due to the impact of COVID. Fortunately, I’d had a good relationship with Fae Corps, the publisher that produced many of the anthologies featured, and they took it on right away.
