One of the recent reviews for Trudy’s Diary

Trudy’s Diary: A libraries of the World Mystery is another great mystery offered by Amy M. Reade.

After moving to Washington D.C., Daisy Carruthers hopes life will settle down. She was involved in a murder investigation prior to moving and hopes to find peace and quiet. She’s exhausted. She finds she didn’t get what she wished for when she becomes embroiled in two more murders. Her boss, who was married to one of the victims, and her best friend, who was the last person to see the other victim, soon become persons of interest.

Daisy comes into possession of a very old diary and a dated dime novel and soon starts to see similar stories in these that might relate to the current crimes. Between her boss, her best friend and a woman she works with, things become complicated.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and loved the twists and turns Ms. Reade used to further the story. I highly recommend this book to people who love a good mystery and great character development.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New Book on the Shelves – psychological thriller – Hope by Terry Tyler

Delighted to showcase the latest release by Terry Tyler – a psychological thriller set in the future – Hope

About the Book

‘We haven’t elected a Prime Minister, we’ve elected a lifestyle’.

As the fourth decade of the 21st century looms, new PM Guy Morrissey and his fitness guru wife Mona (hashtag MoMo) are hailed as the motivational couple to get the UK #FitForWork, with Mona promising to ‘change the BMI of the nation’.

Lita Stone is an influential blogger and social media addict, who watches as Guy and Mona’s policies become increasingly ruthless. Unemployment and homelessness are out of control. The solution? Vast new compounds all over the country, to house those who can no longer afford to keep a roof over their heads.

These are the Hope Villages, financed by US corporation Nutricorp.

Lita and her flatmates Nick and Kendall feel safe in their cosy cyberspace world. Unaware of how swiftly bad luck can snowball, they suspect little of the danger that awaits the unfortunate, behind the carefully constructed mirage of Hope.

Terry Tyler’s nineteenth published work is a psychological thriller that weaves through the darker side of online life, as the gap between the haves and the have-nots grows ever wider. Whether or not it will mirror a dystopian future that awaits us, we will have to wait and see.

An early review for the book on Goodreads

Jun 04, 2019 G. Lawrence rated it five stars

I loved this book, and was just as equally disturbed by it. A chilling version of the future, which also contains the hope that compassion survives, despite the best efforts of some.

Ms Tyler has a gift for taking strands of the present and weaving them into a completely believable, and chilling, vision of the near future. A future where compassion and understanding, individuality and difference, are being slowly replaced by judgement and condemnation; where all people are stream-lined into a vision of “perfection” held by the few, and not for the reasons they say, but for commercial gain, for a world they want. It is a future where the poor are shunned, segregated and slowly destroyed, where the body, if it does not fit into the “right” size, is shamed. Products to bring about “perfection” are sold through fear (much as now) of not fitting in, not being perfect, not being enough.

This book condemns the ills of our present society and shows a terrifying vision of what happens when judgement replaces compassion. A world where kindness is dying, strangled by revulsion, where acceptance and variety are shamed rather than celebrated, where people are made into consumers, forced by shame and circumstance into a docile, helpless work force, making the few rich richer.

There were echoes of 1984 in the book, but brought up to date. A population kept under control by shame and fear, kept spending where they need to spend by the message that in order to be perfect (and only by being perfect will they have jobs, home, love) they must be a certain way, their lack of privacy sold to them as freedom, a “freedom” which is then used as a weapon against them.

And yet, for all this there is a real message of hope I saw at the end. Whilst evil continues on, so does the fight. Those willing to risk, those willing to stand up and question the system will encounter problems, life altering in many ways, but those voices count. Those voices stand up. Stand out. The war is not won in one go, and the book makes that clear. It is the battles that matter; standing up with a voice that is yours alone to say when something is not right. That, is the hope I took from the book. Hope has many meanings in the book, but the book ends with a hope that unlike the Hope Villages, is not fake, is not something packaged up with nothing solid inside. Hope is in people, in individuality, and is in the knowledge within us of what is right and wrong, and the courage to speak out against injustice. Hope is in human compassion, in love and in friendship. Hope is in us.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New book on the Shelves – Death in Shangri-La (A Dotan Naor Thriller) by Yigal Zur

Very pleased to welcome Israeli thriller author Yigal Zur to the Cafe and Bookstore with the books that have been translated into English so far. Beginning with Death in Shangri-La (A Dotan Naor Thriller)

About the Dotan Naor thriller series

DOTAN NAOR is an ex-Mossad agent, bounced out of the agency not just for a fatal miscalculation in Palestinian Jenin but for his inability to live within the bureaucracy and submit to authority. Dotan is now a private detective who uses his immense skills of persuasion and violence to rescue Israelis who are in peril throughout the world. Through his extensive travels in Asia, Dotan has developed a love for Eastern philosophy and lifestyle; his enhanced spiritual existence also happens to be good for business as many Israelis run off to exotic Asian locales to let off steam after their mandatory and often dangerous military service.

In Dotan, author Yigal Zur has uniquely fashioned an amalgam of Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer, Daniel Silva’s Gabriel Allon, and Brian Mills, the ex-CIA agent played by Liam Neeson in Taken to create a modern-day international hero, soaked in violence, passion and spiritualism.

About Death in Shangri-La

Ex-Israeli operative turned private investigator, Dotan Naor—to settle a bet—agrees to locate the missing son of former acquaintance, now ruthless Israeli arms merchant, Willy Mizrachi. Willy, who does not hesitate to sell killing machines to the most heinous players in the world, is desperate to find his only son, Itiel, who has headed to an ashram in the Himalayas.

The Himalayas are also host to groups of young Israelis who have completed their mandatory military service—a sort of rite of passage. Now, those innocent kids are being hunted down by violent terrorists.

India and the disputed Kashmir region between India and Pakistan is familiar territory to Dotan, as he searches for Itiel and for the source of these heinous attacks on Israeli youth.

Unwilling to leave this quest in the hands of Dotan, Willy also travels to India, where he is murdered in Delhi, triggering international repercussions capable of ripping the world apart at one of its most dangerous flashpoints.

Nothing is as it seems in this region of the world. Betrayal reigns everywhere.

But love, in its purest form, does manage to shine through in this story of brutal international corruption.

One of the reviews for Death in Shangri La on Goodreads

Jan 03, 2019 Kylie D rated it really liked it

What happens when a spiritual journey turns deadly? Israeli youths, travelling to the Himalayan area of India are being targeted by Muslim terrorists. Israeli PI Dotan Naor travels with beautiful Mossad agent Maya to get to the bottom of terrorist attacks. Dotan’s friend Willy, an unscrupulous arms dealer, has been murdered in Delhi while looking for his son, who has gone to an ashram in the Himalayas. While others have been killed outright in surprise attacks, some taken hostage, Dotan and Maya find their work cut out for them as they chase the culprits down.

An intriguing thriller, set in an amazing part of the world, Death In Shangri-La is part spy novel, part social commentary, with a splash of romance thrown in for good measure. Author Yigul Zur has excelled with this well-researched novel and obviously knows his topic inside out. I enjoyed this book immensely, read it in one sitting, and wouldn’t hesitate to read more work from this author. I recommend this book to all lovers of action and adventure novels.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New book on the shelves -#Mystery/Humor/Romance -Soap on a Rope – Cold Cream Murders – Book 3 by Barbara Silkstone

Delighted to welcome bestselling author Barbara Silkstone to the Cafe and Bookstore with her books and in particular her latest release Soap on a Rope – Cold Cream Murders – Book 3.

About Soap on a Rope

When Nelson Dingler is found dangling from a chandelier—feet-side up—Grams Dingler determines to find her son’s killer. Can Olive help her best friend save her feisty grandmother from suffering the same fate? And can the Cold Cream Shop survive while Olive psyches out the killer?

Contains a recipe for heavenly lavender lemon honey soap.

When Olive Peroni put out her family therapy sign, she never thought her top client would be the retired head of a New York crime family. When Olive’s nonna dies and leaves her a condo in Florida and a secret recipe for miracle cold cream, Olive grabs the chance at a new life in Starfish Cove, Florida, making designer creams for ladies who spend far too much time at the beach.

But when the quiet little community on the Gulf of Mexico soon begins to compete with a certain notorious coastal village in Maine, Olive finds herself solving odd-ball murders as often as she soothes wrinkles.

One of the early reviews for the book

Olive and Lizzy have had their ups and downs when it comes to their cold cream shop. Despite the adversities, they’ve persevered. Their dream is taking flight, even if it’s moving forward in small steps. They’ve done everything possible to make the shop work. Imagine their surprise when Lizzy’s father turns up dead unexpectedly. Who’s caused his demise, they wonder? How ever will they catch him?

While I’ve come into this series via the third book, I’ve enjoyed every minute of the journey. You can bet I’ll be diving into books 1 and 2 soon enough. I found myself immersed in the story from the moment I began reading. Barbara has a way with words. So much so, that you find yourself following the characters are every turn, discovering every little secret right alongside them.

I love the camaraderie that exists between Olive and Lizzy. The best of friends, they complement each other in so many ways, while also playing down on their weaknesses. These girls know each other, in and out. They aren’t afraid to point out flaws in the hopes of bettering themselves.

Presented with the untimely demise of Lizzy’s father, the girls must do everything possible to find out who’s committed the wretched act in the hopes of putting them behind bars, once and for all. Doing so is no easy feat either. Anyone could be the culprit. If you like cozy mysteries, this is a series you’ll definitely enjoy. I know I am. Totally recommend it.

One of the reviews for The Escape Series Book 1 – Playing in the Rain

Dec 05, 2018 Joshua Grant rated it Five Stars

Sandra Jackson’s first novel in The Escape series Playing in the Rain starts you right into the action and never lets up. It doesn’t make the mistake of most thrillers. Jackson keeps things fast-paced, but she always takes the time to highlight the characters’ emotions and make you care about them. The internal thoughts and flashbacks were the highlight of the novel, as was the mystery. Our main character is kidnapped and placed in a mysterious facility, forced to plot a daring escape. Great twists and meaningful characters make this a must for any fans of The Island or Maze Runner out there!

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore, New on the Shelves – #Children – Davey & Derek Junior Detectives series: The Case of the Mystery of the Bells by Janice Spina

Delighted to showcase the latest children’s book from award winning author Janice Spina, the latest in the Davey & Derek Junior Detectives series: The Case of the Mystery of the Bells.

About the book

Step into another magical and fun adventure with the twin detectives to solve this new mystery. There are clues at every turn, ghostly dreams with strange messages, and a surprise visitor that shakes things up. Even Aunt Gigi and Mianna are at a loss to provide any assistance to the boys.
Will Davey & Derek be able to solve this mystery of the bells? Where do they turn? Will they be able to put all the clues together? Can they use their new birthday gifts in this adventure? Find out what the boys do in this magical mystery.

One of the early reviews for the book

I’ve read every book in the Davey & Derek Junior Detectives series and enjoyed each one. The Case of the Mystery of the Bells is my favorite so far. As with all of Janice Spina’s children’s books, this book teaches children positive values. The twins are always respectful to others and use good manners. One of the things that stood out for me in book 6 is when Davey had a bad dream, Derek jumped right in and offered his brother reassurance and then fixed him a cup of hot cocoa to calm him down. They always have each other’s back and are friends as much as twin brothers.

The boys Great Aunt Gigi, as we learn from earlier books, has special powers that Laura, Davey and Derek’s mother has inherited to some degree, but Davey and Derek to a much greater degree. The boys are learning how to handle these powers in a positive way and never misuse them. Aunt Gigi is their tutor in these mystical matters.

The characters are depicted in a way that makes them believable, including their powers. I especially love reading about Aunt Gigi. I can picture her greeting the children and inviting them in while bestowing her love upon them as she provides wonderful snacks and mystical experiences.

In Book 6 of the series we are introduced to Aunt Gigi’s twin sister Auriana and various other relatives from the realm of magic.

If you have middle grade children, I highly recommend this and any of the other books in the series, as well as those in the new Abby & Holly series. I can’t say enough about Janice Spina and her books.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New Book on the Shelves -#Mystery- Fire in the Vineyard by Christa Polkinhorn.

Delighted to welcome a new author to the shelves of the Cafe and Bookstore with her books. Christa Polkinhorn and her most recent release Fire in the Vineyard

About Fire in the Vineyard

When bottles of wine disappear from the Segantino Winery in Paso Robles, California, and an arson fire kills his close friend, the owner of the estate, Robert Segantino, is faced with the toughest ordeal of his career as winemaker: someone intends to destroy what he has built over the years. As it becomes increasingly clear that members of his staff and of his family are among the suspects, the ambitious wine tycoon is forced to reevaluate his goals in life, and, above all, his relationship to his son and future heir. Part family drama, part suspense, FIRE IN THE VINEYARD, the third book in The Wine Lover’s Daughter series, takes the reader on another thrilling adventure through one of California’s wine countries.

One of the reviews for the book

A wonderful story about a family of wine producers and merchants. The story comes with interesting characters and complicated family relationships. When things start to go wrong in the vineyard, everybody is a suspect, including family members. The author makes clever use of dialogue as things heat up and suspicions turn nasty. The vivid descriptions of the California wine producing landscape make you want to visit this part of America. Woven into the narrative is the complicated process of producing a bottle of wine. A great read for those who love a glass of wine and even for those who don’t

Colm Herron 5.0 out of 5 stars Two stunning authors 5 February 2019

The Sixties are still a bit of a blur for me. That means I was there. And I have a lot of broken hearts to prove it – all mine. I was shot down so many times in those ten or so years that it’s a wonder I’m still here. All of which means I know something of the problems and the heartache that Only One Woman’s main protagonists Renza and Stella went through. But it wasn’t Scott I was after. Definitely not, believe me. It was Patricia and Hazel and Marie and Ann and Sybil and Melanie and …. I can’t go on.

The two girls in Only One Woman tell of their crush on Scott in a way that can only mean that the authors of this wonderfully nostalgic and loving look at the Sixties were rapt witnesses to those amazing years. The people, the songs, the music, the styles – and most of all the attitudes. In one sense it didn’t matter too much to me which of these two girls ended up with Scott because far more important than that was the way that these two authors got right into the hearts of the lovestruck Renza and Stella.

Ah, the authors. First, Christina Jones. Apart from a scintillating career in writing which began when she was a mere child, she has done so many odd-jobs – as well as odd jobs – that her life experience cannot be doubted. (Possibly the only work she didn’t do was captaining a North Sea oil rig, although I’m open to correction on that). And her co-author in this labour of love they have written is the incomparable Jane Risdon. Jane has been closely involved in so many fascinating experiences that she needs a separate wardrobe for all the T-shirts she has to vouch for it. Rock, Thrash Metal, Pop, R&B, Chinese Opera as well as movies, television and radio worldwide. And now writing, which amazingly she only got into five years ago. Stunning. Both stunning people.

About Jane Risdon

Jane Risdon began writing five years ago having had a successful career in the International Music Industry which has taken her all over the world working with everything from Rock, Thrash Metal, and R&B/Pop to Chinese Opera. Her work has taken her to North America, Europe, and Singapore: even to Taiwan.

She’s been involved in Television, Radio, and the Movies around the world.

Travelling extensively and living overseas she draws upon her life experiences when writing Crime/Mystery novels, short stories in all genres – including humour, and she has dabbled in flash fiction.

Some of these experiences have found their way into her short stories about the Music Business, and she is presently working on a novel which will bring a lot of her more crazy ‘rock ‘n roll’ experiences into one tome.

Her main focus remains crime however, and she is working on a series of novels called ‘Ms Birdsong Investigates’ centered around a glamorous ex MI5 Officer forced into early retirement, who is trying to keep a low profile in a rural village in Oxfordshire. Her past experiences come to the fore when she finds herself investigating murder. Soon she finds herself back on old territory with Russian Mafia, Ukrainian People Traffickers and an old flame to deal with.
