Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New Book on the Shelves – A Year in the Life of Leah Brand: A #Psychological Thriller by Lucinda E. Clarke

Congratulations to Lucinda E.Clarke on the release of her latest book A Year in the Life of Leah Brand: A Psychological Thriller and for the terrific reviews it is already receiving.

About the book

Leah’s nightmare began the day the dog died.

A few years earlier a fatal car crash took the lives of Leah’s beloved husband and their two babies, leaving her disabled. Life looked bleak. She was approaching forty, unemployed, broke and desperate.

Then she met Mason. He was charming, charismatic, persuasive, and a successful businessman, well respected in the community. His teenage daughter did nothing to welcome Leah into the family, but life is never perfect.

Then, two years into her second marriage, Leah Brand’s world is turned upside down; inanimate objects in the house move, her clothes are left out for the rubbish collection, pieces of furniture change places, there are unexplained noises and hauntings.

As the disturbances increase, everyone accuses Leah of losing her mind. Soon she begins to doubt herself and she starts to spiral down into a world of insanity. Is she going mad, or is someone out to destroy her? And if so, why?

A gripping, psychological thriller for fans of Mary Higgins Clarke and Louise Jensen.

One of the early reviews for the book.

This author, Lucinda e. Clarke, writes great stories. Although this is not her usual genre, she sure knocked my socks off. This thriller begins slowly to gradually blow your mind, and to make you question how fragile one’s mind can become. Or is this not about the mind, but evil outside of her control?

I so enjoyed the beginning chapter. It was light, joyful, somewhat hilarious at times–then the laughing stopped. All her characters are fully fleshed out. I felt her protagonist’s struggles and doubts. Two other characters in this book, both female, came to life so fully, I was astonished at how one could describe a character as well as the author does, especially with the younger one.

The suspense builds up to a point where the reader is as confused as the protagonist. I imagined all kinds of things were occurring. Creepy is a mild word for the unexplained happenings in the main character’s home. Anyone would go mad with that kind of horror testing her day-after-day. Guessing throughout the book is fun, as thrillers always are, but this time I did not guess the ending. I finally met a ‘too clever’ conclusion.

It certainly is a story that held my attention, so I suggest you prepare your cup of coffee or tea, or maybe a cocktail? before you begin this book. You won’t want to put it down.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New Book on the Shelves – #Design RED – A Voyage Into Colors: Second Edition by Valentina Cirasola

Delighted to showcase the second edition of Red: A Voyage Into Colors by Valentina Cirasola in print. A book about colour and its influence on our lives in all aspects including spiritually.

About the book

From the dawn of time, every race and population have attributed various meanings and symbolism to colors. This book talks about colors, how humans can benefit from using them, how our health, spirit, and state of mind can improve by using all colors without distinction.

The book teaches how to create and mix colors as a study for people who have an interest in becoming artists and are just starting. Also, the book delves into understanding colors from a spiritual point of view and how to use them, in a technical way, for interiors, fashion, food, entertainment and much more. It is so important when mixing colors to look at nature as our best teacher, where all colors are mixed together and co-exist well without rules and prejudices. We can simply copy nature and feel perfect in our choice of colors.

About Valentina Cirasola

I am Valentina, Italian born, my hometown is Bari the capital of Puglia region. I was born into a family of artists, designers and food connoisseurs. When I moved away from my family and started to cook for myself out of necessity, it was as if by miracle, all those years watching, eating and tasting translated into doing. I recalled the perfection how every dish was supposed to look and taste. Watching my family and eating good food every day, gave me the expertise of a professional chef. I had the first funny episode in my cooking life and the only one of this kind: once, I cooked spaghetti without adding water in the pot and of course it was as if I had started firecrackers in my kitchen.

Today, living in America, among many things, I spread lightheartedness and joy, while passing my notions of good life and good health through eating real food. Through public speaking and appearances, I educate and inspire people to eat real food and think of cooking not as a chore but a fun moment of the day. Pour yourself a glass of wine, put on your favorite music or TV program and start cooking with joy, then set your table in a harmonious way, sit down and enjoy the product of your cooking whether there is a family or not eating with you. You are important and your soul will rejoice if you pay attention to it.

I am a passionate cook, avid reader, speak four languages and I trot the world. I also take interest in cuisines of the world and I am especially interested in food in the history. These are all the pleasurable parts of my life that have prompted me to start writing books.

However, my main profession is in interior designing with a special focus upon Kitchens. What a better designer than the ones who cook! My passions are showing up in every aspect of my life. I have been in business as a certified interior designer since 1990, working in my company Valentina Interiors & Designs and have served a variegated group of fun people in Europe and in the United States. To remodel homes and to turn unattractive spaces into castles is the specialty of my business, but to design kitchens and wine grottos is my love, as you can imagine. Those are the rooms of a home that make people feel good.

One of the most fundamental areas in people’s lives is the HOME. Home is where people return to relax; a place that props anyone up in time of crisis. It is the center of everything and a lot of the answers to questions of life are there. In simple words, I love to harmonize people’s lives by finding their excellence, creating their energy with colors and adding beauty, while designing their palates as well. I care that everyone deserves to live in beauty and harmony.

Previous the interior design business, I was a fashion designer and owned my Atelier Valentina from where I created original one of a kind fashion. Now, so many years later, I have incorporated fashion in my interior design business and create powerful personal images for high rollers professionals and people who care to look good for themselves first in every moment of the day.

I have loved my professions for so long and never have given signs of wanting to quit. My books are the reflections of my passions. Welcome to my world. Benvenuti nel mio mondo.

Jul 26, 2019 Brian Kitchen rated it Five Stars

If you like the novels of Graham Greene and Len Deighton, then I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy this very engrossing read, by Daniel Kemp. Set in the 1970s, this thriller is very atmospheric of the times and I really enjoyed the plot (no spoilers here folks) which involved historic secrets the establishment didn’t want revealed.

Mr Kemp has obviously studied the period and also the events leading up to the Second World War extensively and upon finishing the novel, I had to wonder whether the events he portrays, could in fact have happened.

I will certainly be reading more of Mr Kemp’s novels.

About Daniel Kemp

Daniel Kemp, ex-London police officer, mini-cab business owner, pub tenant and licensed London taxi driver never planned to be a writer, but after his first novel –The Desolate Garden — was under a paid option to become a $30 million film for five years until distribution became an insurmountable problem for the production company what else could he do?

In May 2018 his book What Happened In Vienna, Jack? became a number one bestseller on four separate Amazon sites: America, UK, Canada, and Australia.

Although it’s true to say that he mainly concentrates on what he knows best; murders laced by the mystery involving spies, his diverse experience of life shows in the short stories he writes, namely: Why? A Complicated Love, and the intriguing story titled The Story That Had No Beginning.

He is the recipient of rave reviews from a prestigious Manhattan publication, been described as –the new Graham Green — by a managerial employee of Waterstones Books, for whom he did a countrywide tour of signing events, and he has appeared on ‘live’ television in the UK.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New Book on the Shelves – #Romance – Love on Air (Rivals in Love Book 4) by P.C. Zick

Delighted to share the news of the latest release by bestselling author P.C. Zick – Love on Air (Rivals in Love Book 4).

About the Series

Love on Air is the fourth novel in the Rivals in Love sweet contemporary romance series. Rivals in Love showcases the Crandall family siblings who are all in successful careers. But they forgot one thing while becoming rising stars. They forgot all about love. Their father a U.S. Senator aspires for high office, but their mother, the heir to a fortune, only wants her children married and with children.

Book one in the Rivals in Love Series is on offer at 99c/99p until 24th October

About the book

Two TV newscasters find common ground in their pursuit of the story. But their methods for coping with horrific news collide during a shooting at Navy Pier.

Diamond Crandall anchors his own cable news show, The Diamond Report, and is resented by some for his age and lack of experience. But he’s proven himself as a solid journalist, and most of his colleagues respect him. When Hope Colson shows up to vie for a seat next to him as co-host, he balks, until he sees her in action.

The producer of his show, Jane, only cares about ratings, not standards. When Jane admits she’s hiring Hope, not for her standards or talent, but because she’s black, Diamond is taken aback and unsure if he should tell Hope or not. But one of Diamond’s colleagues—one who’s still resentful of Diamond’s ascent at the network—tells Hope that it is Diamond who wanted a black woman hired for diversity’s sake. What had started as a promising professional, and perhaps personal, relationship deteriorates into the two of them barely speaking.

It doesn’t help that the rest of the Crandall family has fallen in love with Hope, and even Senator Nolan Crandall, gives Hope an exclusive interview, which rankles Diamond especially since Hope has been giving him the cold shoulder treatment. When Hope panics during a shooting at Navy Pier in Chicago, Diamond advises her to get help. It’s only when Diamond sees a family collapse that he goes into his own form of PTSD.

They both reveal the past tragedies that refuse to heal since both have refused to talk about them. From Chicago to D.C. and the halls of Congress, the two journalists appear on the air together, but when the lights go off and they face each other, the truths long hidden will determine if the chemistry on the air translates to real life.

An early review for the book on Goodreads

Another can’t-put-it-down book in the Rivals in Love series! Diamond Crandall has become a prime-time newscaster and suddenly, he has to deal with the newly hired Hope Colson. At first sparks fly––but not the good kind. Throw in a ratings-greedy producer, some PTSD, and you have the makings of another deep and entertaining book. Highly recommend.

One of the recent reviews for Nine Lives on Goodreads

Sep 28, 2019 Mae Clair rated it Five Stars

In Nine Lives, we meet Kate, a fifty-nine-year old artist who has had a wretched string of luck when it comes to men, and who is now going through the motions of a day-to-day existence. She has health issues, smokes too much, and is plagued by an inner voice that constantly monitors her decisions.

Much of the story is written in expository style, admittedly not something I am used to. The reader is treated to a lot of background information about how Kate’s life has evolved and how each day unfolds. She’s made mistakes, bad choices she now recognizes, and has been taken advantage of by more than one man. Kate hopes the worst is behind her—especially now, with a female mentor and friend who offers the steadfast support she has been lacking. Sadly, there are still hurdles to overcome, the toll of which becomes evident when several in Kate’s orbit meet with foul play.

The writing is crisp, the descriptions vivid. Dialogue, when it appears, is well done, although the bulk of the book relies on narrative. I did find several of the scenes difficult to read and had to skim them. That aside, the author did an excellent job in creating a thoroughly reprehensible villain, who I couldn’t wait to see reach a justifiable end.

This book is a slow burn, very dark, with a somber tone. It creeps along like a slowly oozing poison or slithering snake that strikes with deadly precision in its concluding moments.

About Jaye Marie

Jaye Marie is affectionately known as the giant redwood, probably because she is very tall, but also because of her love for trees. Most afternoons she can be found repotting or taking care of her bonsai collection, but her love of detective mysteries soon brings her back indoors. She has written three fiction novels in this genre, Nine Lives, Out of Time and Crossfire and is about to publish Silent Payback, her fourth book.

She spends any free time learning everything she can about self-publishing, and despite all the obstacles, she never gives up on anything and is as stubborn as a mule

She also enjoy running a website/blog and all the wonderful people she continues to meet from all around the world. She learns something new every single day and it is much appreciated.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New Book on the Shelves -#YA #Fantasy -Through the Nethergate by Roberta Eaton Cheadle

The latest book by Roberta Eaton Cheadle is now available in print on Amazon although it has been receiving great early reviews. Through the Nethergate

About the book

Margaret, a girl born with second sight, has the unique ability to bring ghosts trapped between Heaven and Hell back to life. When her parents die suddenly, she goes to live with her beloved grandfather, but the cellar of her grandfather’s ancient inn is haunted by an evil spirit of its own. In the town of Bungay, a black dog wanders the streets, enslaving the ghosts of those who have died unnatural deaths. When Margaret arrives, these phantoms congregate at the inn, hoping she can free them from the clutches of Hugh Bigod, the 12th century ghost who has drawn them away from Heaven’s White Light in his canine guise. With the help of her grandfather and the spirits she has befriended, Margaret sets out to defeat Hugh Bigod, only to discover he wants to use her for his own ends – to take over Hell itself.

One of the early reviews for the book on 15th October from James J. Cudney

Through the Nethergate is the latest novel from author Roberta Eaton Cheadle and was published in October 2019. I snatched a copy as soon as it was available because I loved her short stories, children’s book series, and memoir co-written with her mother. This latest book falls within the young adult and fantasy genres, something we’ve seen a little bit of before from her, but never to this degree. Let’s get into the story.

Margaret’s parents die in a car crash when she is sixteen. Although Margaret would like to live with her aunt, the will indicates she should live with her maternal grandfather in an old castle that was converted into a bed-and-breakfast inn in Great Britain’s countryside. Although her grandfather is loving, he has high expectations of Margaret, and when some of the staff are busy, she pitches in to help. In the beginning, she sees a few ghosts in random parts of the castle that make her a tad nervous, but by 20% into the book, readers realize these ghosts might truly be out to hurt her. What we don’t know is why… until the game changes and the ghosts begin to materialize into human form. What is it about Margaret that makes them come alive again?

This is the quintessential story about good versus evil, except there are many twists to the traditional story. We also have several fabulous history lessons to root us in the time period when the original ‘problem’ began for these ghosts. When Margaret is attacked, her grandfather recognizes the signs and calls a priest to perform an exorcism. At first, I thought… “that might be a bit unnecessary.” Then, I see how wrong I was. All HELL breaks loose at this point, and I do mean HELL. These ghosts are being controlled by a ~900-year-old vengeful former member of the royal family and its close circle of supporters-cum-enemies. And let’s not forget the black dog with red eyes that seems to follow Margaret (and the victims) everywhere.

My absolute favorite aspect of this story was the way in which it was told. In the beginning, it’s almost like a collection of stories glued together by a common thread: Margaret. Once Margaret meets a new ghost, the chapter ends and we switch to how that particular ghost died years ago. It really helps amp up the spookiness and the suspenseful nature of the books. Robbie handled this with great care and expertise, and I found myself unable to put the book down because each time something came to an end, something else even more intriguing began. What a fantastic style!

Sections two and three follow a different format, but it’s also a strong one. The biggest shocker hurtles at us when we learn the connection of this ancient royal creep. Lucifer himself. This is actually a tale about religion and politics (in a good way), the penultimate battle in the garden of good versus evil. Who will win? Who will be hurt? When Robbie begins to talk about the fall of modern society because of technology and social media, it was all too obvious of a reality check. I’d also begun watching American Horror Story: Apocalypse that evening, so it was a huge theme taking over my life. Immersive, thrilling, and completely unexpected from the author.

Robbie weaves multiple themes within the plot. Various awful historical figures come back to life (Hitler’s cronies, for example) to show who’s controlling the ghosts and deciding the fate of the world. Though over-the-top in some aspects, there are beautiful lighter moments when Margaret turns to her family or the kind ghosts for help. I’m kinda hoping there is a part two coming out in the future because these characters are going to stay with me for a long time. Kudos to Robbie Cheadle for a great adventure and a thoroughly enjoyable book. I highly recommend this for something unique and captivating.

About Roberta Eaton Cheadle

Robbie, short for Roberta, is an author with five published children’s picture books in the Sir Chocolate books series for children aged 2 to 9 years old (co-authored with her son, Michael Cheadle), one published middle grade book in the Silly Willy series and one published preteen/young adult fictionalised biography about her mother’s life as a young girl growing up in an English town in Suffolk during World War II called While the Bombs Fell (co-authored with her mother, Elsie Hancy Eaton). All of Robbie’s children’s book are written under Robbie Cheadle and are published by TSL Publications. Robbie has recently branched into adult horror and supernatural writing and, in order to clearly differential her children’s books from her adult writing, these will be published under Roberta Eaton Cheadle. Robbie has two short stories in the horror/supernatural genre included in Dark Visions, a collection of 34 short stories by 27 different authors and edited by award winning author, Dan Alatorre. These short stories are published under Robbie Cheadle.

I have been drawn to the horror and supernatural genres of books all my life. At the age of ten years old I embarked on reading Stephen King’s books including The Shining and Salem’s Lot. These books scared me so much I had to put them aside by 6P.M. in the evening in order to get a good night’s sleep but they also fascinated me. I subsequently worked my way through all of Stephen King’s earlier books as well as those of Dean R. Koontz.

I have read a large number of classics, in particular, I enjoy Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Charles Dickens and the works of the Bronte sisters.

I am hugely interested in the history of the United Kingdom as well as the mythology and tales of the paranormal that are abundant on this intriguing European island.

About The Last Will of Sven Anderson

When Harry Spittle, nearly qualified as a solicitor, is approached to write a Will for old acquaintance Sven Andersen, he is somewhat surprised but rather pleased. That pleasure sours after he finds that the Will Sven actually signs is very different to the one he has drawn up, with Harry as the executor. Disappointment turns to horror when he discovers that Sven has been winding up his late father’s criminal empire and a number of not very nice people are interested in the Will’s contents.

If he is to remain in one piece, able to continue his career in the law and save his on-off relationship with his girlfriend Penny, who is unfortunately under suspicion of murder, he needs to find out what’s happened to the money and distribute it according to Sven’s wishes.

The trouble is Sven has not only hidden the assets but also the identities of those who benefit. Harry will have to solve a fiendish puzzle Sven has left behind with the help of his sister Dina before his world comes crashing down. With so many people depending on him, Harry knows it’s time for him to grow up – it’s just that he really, really doesn’t want to.

Most importantly will he finally get laid?

One of the reviews for Dead Flies and Sherry Trifle on Goodreads

Jan 30, 2017 Raymond Mathiesen rated it it was amazing

Harry struggles in a more and more complicated web…

Harry Spittle is home from first year at university with not exactly spectacular exam results. But that’s the least of his worries. Stephen McNoble, a violent bully-boy from university, is holidaying in Harry’s home town. Even worse Stephen’s father knows Harry’s parents. Things seem to be going better when Harry gets a holiday job at Hemmingway’s, the local upmarket hotel, but things get very complicated and go from bad to worse.

This novel is full of entanglements, confusions and disasters, but light heartedly romps along, endearing the reader to Harry, despite all his weaknesses and faults. It is not a short read, but is entertaining all the way. One of the important themes is the values of family and friends, and the idea that we don’t necessarily cope if we feel we have to be totally self-reliant. But don’t get the wrong idea: this is not at all a ‘heavy’ read. Humour certainly runs throughout the book and you can expect the odd chuckle as you read.

Although this could certainly be described as a ‘guy’s book,’ Dina, Penny and Natalie, among others, represent the female perspective. There are plenty of capable women here, although not all are ‘good,’ indeed femininity in its many and varied forms are well represented.

There are a few mildly spicy scenes and some violence, but as I said this is mostly a light entertaining book. I’m certainly glad I read this book.
