Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore Update – #Reviews – Hugh W. Roberts, Don Massenzio and Nicholas C. Rossis

Welcome to the first of the weekly updates for the cafe and bookstore, with recent reviews for authors on the shelves.

The first review is for More Glimpses the recent short story collection by Hugh W. Roberts.

About More Glimpses

Do you believe in fairies at the bottom of the garden? Or know the real truth about what lurks inside every mobile phone? Would you steal items from a blind person, or send your neighbours on a time travelling adventure fraught with danger and menace to save the human race from a bug? How about staying in a sleepy village where many murders have taken place or coming to the aid of royalty while out shopping?

‘More Glimpses’ gives the reader an opportunity to take a peek into the lives of normal, everyday people whose lives are all on a path full of twists, turns and unexpected endings. However, it’s not only about the humans; nothing escapes the extraordinary journeys Hugh has planned for you. If you are a lover of shows such as ‘Black Mirror’ or ‘The Twilight Zone’ then you’re in for another exciting trip in this second collection from Hugh. Come and meet the characters who had no idea their lives were about to be turned upside-down. Enjoy the ride!

Hugh Roberts is back with More…Glimpses, that is! This is his second collection of short stories showcasing the dark and somewhat twisted mind of humankind. Roberts’ witty imagination, coupled with his love of stories from The Twilight Zone and Outer Limits, crafts 31 more tales of dark humor and hair-raising stories in a variety of genres, some a short read, others a little longer to get your heart racing! In every case, just when you think you’ve got the tale figured out, Roberts drops in a completely unexpected ending that may make you jump, laugh or even ponder our use of technology! The Tunnel, Baby Talk, Floral Hall, and The Right Choice were my favorites!

The next author to be enjoying recent reviews is Don Massenzio for Let Me Be Frank ( A Frank Rozzani Detective Novels Book 2)

About the book

A young girl is senselessly murdered. The police believe the murder to be a random homeless casualty until it is discovered that she has ties to Fat Sam and his mysterious past life in The Big Easy.

Join private detective Frank Rozzani, and Clifford “Jonesy” Jones as they travel to historic New Orleans and other areas in the Gulf Coast to search for clues in the girl’s trek to Jacksonville, Florida that will help them uncover evidence implicating those responsible for the murder so they can be brought to justice. They soon discover that things are not as they seem. As the case progresses, the evidence uncovered has ties to the tragic events that drove Frank from his life in Syracuse, New York. Frank realizes that proceeding with the case could change his life, as well as the lives of those around him, forever.

One of the recent reviews for the book

A young runaway has been given a new chance at life by Fat Sam, owner of the restaurant and bar where Frank and Jonesey often play music. Fat Sam has his own unfortunate and problematic past and he pours energy and resources into helping other homeless and people who have fallen on hard times to re-establish their lives. When the girl is found murdered, the police believe it is just a random attack but Sam does not believe this. He is convinced that the murder is deliberate and is linked to the girl’s lineage as the granddaughter of one of New Orleans “mafia” families. Sam’s own troubles are linked to New Orleans and he is familiar with the history of the waring “mafia” families. Sam hires Frank and Jonesey to investigate the case and try to discover who the murderers are and why this murder took place.

This story is fine to read on a stand alone basis although there are a few link backs to the first book in the series. More details are revealed in respect of Frank’s own past and his former entanglement with the mafia who murdered his wife. His relationship with his new girlfriend also changes and becomes more interesting.

This is not an easy case and the stakes are high for both Fat Sam and Frank who must sacrifice their anonymity with the mob and put themselves in the line of fire. Frank and Sam also face adversity from all directions, including the murdered girl’s family, the New Orlean’s police and the girl’s employers over the period when she made her way from New Orlean’s to Jacksonville.

An exciting and fast paced book which I would highly recommend to readers of thrillers and detective stories.

The final author today with a recent review is Nicholas C. Rossis for A Heaven for Toasters

About the book

Detective Mika Pensive has a new partner. He’s hot. Smart. Funny. And an android.

Set in the near future, A Heaven for Toasters is more than a sci-fi crime adventure with plenty of romance and wit. It’s the book that will make you look at your toaster in a whole new way.

A recent review for the book

I admit the quirky book title drew me in, but it’s the story that quickly made this a page-turner. Mika is a detective in the future and on a date in the Greek Islands. She runs into her new partner a handsome “AI” named Leo at an art exhibit. After a fight with her date, he leaves, and things go downhill quickly from there. I loved Leo “the Toaster” and his developing relationship with Mika. Not only is there action and a mystery to solve, but there are also questions brought up about what defines existence and life. I highly recommend this thought-provoking sci-fi romantic thriller.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New Book on the Shelves – A Heaven for Toasters #sci-fi #Romance #Crime by Nicholas C. Rossis #99c

Delighted to feature the latest release from Nicholas C. Rossis. A Heaven for Toasters is a Science Fiction Crime Romance released on August 13th. Currently only 99c/99p

About the A Heaven for Toasters.

A science fiction crime adventure with plenty of humor and romance

A souvlaki and some sun. That is all Detective Mika Pensive wanted from her fun weekend away on the Greek islands. Instead, she finds herself caught up in a sinister plot, hatched by a reclusive billionaire with a penchant for illegal genetic engineering. As if that wasn’t bad enough, she has to put up with her new partner, Leo. Leo is an android—or toaster, as people scornfully call his kind. The only thing that could make things even worse would be for the headstrong Mika to fall for Leo. But people don’t fall for toasters—do they?

Set in the near future, A Heaven for Toasters is more than a sci-fi crime romance. It’s the book that will make you look at your toaster in a whole new way.

An early review for the book

Lighthearted sci-fi story that is a fun read. I love the characters and their interactions and the questions that it raises about where the definition of “human” should really be drawn in their world.
