Smorgasbord Book Promotion – Air Your Reviews – Jaye Marie, Alyssa Drake, John Howell and Andrew Joyce

Welcome to the first of the review posts this week and we have four authors celebrating receiving recent reviews. The first is for Jaye Marie for The Ninth Life.

About The Ninth Life

Nine Lives is the story of struggling and ageing artist Kate Devereau’s life as she tries to make sense of her often confusing existence. She needs to understand what has been happening to her, and why she seems to have cheated death on so many occasions.
To understand why she has been plagued by the mysterious, tormenting voice in her head before it might be too late to do anything about it
The most recent review for The Ninth Life.

Sep 06, 2017 Rosie Amber rated it Four Stars.

The Ninth Life is a psychological thriller set mainly in Guildford, Surrey.

Kate is a fifty-nine year old artist. She has an unusual voice in her head that provides commentary on her life; however, she has always tried to ignore what it says. Kate is currently working on a series of seascape pieces for Sam, a gallery owner and best friend, who is opening a new gallery in London.

We learn about Kate’s earlier life in a series of memories; her hardships, relationships and her current desire for solitude are all fed to us in easy-to-absorb chunks. Early on we are introduced to a sinister character who is besotted with her. As the story develops there is a slow build-up of tension, with a net of mishaps and murder that draw closer.

I liked Kate, with her artistic flair and disregard for most responsibility unless it was connected to her paintings. It became her coping mechanism in the face of underlying fears. Her passion for art shone through and I could almost see the paintings she so lovingly produced. Her back story was interesting and filled out her character, but the method of introducing it got a little repetitive towards the end. I did want to know a little more about those who loved Kate and, perhaps, what drew them to her. For me, there were so many unanswered questions about many of them, I would have enjoyed a little more to flesh out the characters.

Overall a good debut novel. If you like art and enjoy the thriller genre, then give this a go.

About the book

Samantha Hastings lived a quiet, peaceful life on her family’s country estate. With no man to order her around and no stifling society rules to follow, she considered herself blessed. However, when her brother’s ship sinks during a short trip to France, Samantha receives a request from her sister-in-law to return to town and manage the late Earl’s finances. Suddenly thrust into society, Samantha faces an unfamiliar world and a pair of very familiar green eyes.

Lord Benjamin Westwood never intended on following through with his rash promise to his best friend. Now, with Edward’s death, Benjamin becomes the unwilling guardian to Edward’s bratty little sister, who has grown up considerably since the last time they met. His intention to marry her off to the first available suitor is thwarted when he finds himself falling for Samantha’s unique demeanor. He lights upon the perfect plan; a marriage of convenience, giving him the opportunity to romance Samantha without distraction.

However, when they discover Edward’s disappearance was due to foul play, Benjamin’s perfect plan begins to quickly unravel. Now, Samantha is in more danger than either of them realized and Benjamin is running out of time.

The next author with a great review for his latest book, Bedtime Stories for Grown-Ups is Andrew Joyce.

Bedtime Stories for Grown Ups

About Bedtime Stories for Grown Ups.

Bedtime Stories for Grown-Ups is a jumble of genres—seven hundred pages of fiction and non-fiction … some stories included against the author’s better judgment. If he had known that one day they’d be published, he might not have been as honest when describing his past. Here is a tome of true stories about the author’s criminal and misspent youth, historical accounts of the United States when She was young, and tales of imagination encompassing every conceivable variety—all presented as though the author is sitting next to you at a bar and you’re buying the drinks as long as he keeps coming up with captivating stories to hold your interest.

Comprised of 218,000 words, you’ll have plenty to read for the foreseeable future. This is a book to have on your night table, to sample a story each night before extinguishing the lights and drifting off to a restful sleep.

Mr. Joyce sincerely hopes that you will enjoy his stories because, as he has stated, “It took a lot of living to come up with the material for some of them.”

Andrew Joyce is the recipient of the 2013 Editor’s Choice Award for Best Western for his novel, Redemption: The Further Adventures of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer.

His book Yellow Hair was awarded Book of the Year by Just Reviews and Best Historical Fiction of 2016 by Colleen’s Book Reviews.

One of the recent reviews for the stories

I have read all of Andrew Joyce’s previous books, and they have all been very good. BEDTIME STORIES FOR GROWNUPS is different. It is a blend of his hitching days , and some other short stories, and even some stories written by his best friend, who was not a human, but Danny the Dog.. when he writes about his hitching days, I am not sure if he was completely CRAZY, or extremely Lucky, or maybe a combination of both. His hitching stories and all of his adventures along the way are very entertaining.

He has already proved to be a good writer in his other books. In this one, he is a goodtoryteller, as his hitching stories (his word for hitch hiker)take him on many adventures in many different places, where he meets many different people. They are all true, he has obviously led a very exciting life. There has never been a dull moment, that is for sure. I totally enjoyed reading this, and am looking forward to his next book.

The last author today with a recent review of 78 reviews, is John Howell for his first book in the John Cannon series – My GRL – Having read all the series I can highly recommend.

About My GRL

John J. Cannon, a successful San Francisco lawyer, takes a leave of absence from the firm and buys a boat he names My GRL. John is unaware his boat has been targeted by a terrorist group to be used to destroy a symbol of America’s greatness. John’s first inkling of trouble is when he wakes up in the hospital and learns he was found unconscious next to the body of the young woman who sold him the boat in the first place. John now is the only one standing between the terrorists and the success of their mission.

One of the most recent reviews for the book

Howell created a page-turning thriller. In the midst of the suspense, the most charming aspect of the story is that the protagonist John J. Cannon is an anti-hero. He’s a lawyer who has taken time off to move to a coastal Texas town and, although he knows very little about boating, buys himself a pretty good sized vessel he names My GRL. John is not necessarily the sharpest, most experienced, or courageous hero. But he’s likeable, the sort of guy you’d like to visit on his boat with a six-pack in your hand—if only it were a safe place.

But from the getgo, John and his boat are involved in a dangerous situation with some very shady characters. It’s great fun to follow along for the ride. John gets himself into one hot spot after another, but eventually he’s gotten himself in so deep it doesn’t seem possible that he can escape. Has John become canny enough to vanquish such a mighty opponent? Once I hit the last third of the book, where suspense leads to fast-paced action, I couldn’t put it down.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – Author Update – D.Wallace Peach, Alyssa Drake and Stevie Turner

Welcome to the Cafe update and the first author today is in fact my guest tomorrow for the Book Reading and Interview, D. Wallace Peach. Diana is releasing three books almost back to back and following close on the heels of Catling’s Bane (The Rose Shield Book 1) is Oathbreaker’s Guild – Book 2, released on March 31st.  I am sure that you will enjoy asking your own questions tomorrow and over the weekend about this new series and Diana’s other work.

About Oathbreaker’s Guild – The Rose Shield Book II

Catling, an aspirant of the Influencers’ Guild, learns to wield the power of the garden carved into her skin. Friends are fewer than enemies, and those who wished her dead now plot her failure. Sworn to the young queen, she enters the world of Elan-Sia where the powerful maneuver for control of the throne.

Amidst rising unrest in the south and increasing pressure from the seafaring Cull Tarr, the high wards of the tiers plot rebellion. Gannon stirs the warrens, and Whitt marches with the warriors of Guardian. Propelled by revenge, Catling journeys to Mur-Vallis. Her mission—to assassinate the man who stole her past, a task that will define her future.

One of the early reviews for Catling’s Bane – The Rose Shield Book 1

D. Wallace Peach creates an utterly original, lush and cohesive world inhabited by well-developed and multi-dimensional characters we instantly care about (even the minor ones), all the more so as the plot unfolds. And what a plot it is — no copycat fiction or cliche devices here. The concept of “influence” as an accepted part of life is not only entertaining but thought provoking; and the author’s attention to detail on how influence works grabs hold and will thrill true high fantasy readers who value intelligent rationale for magic. All I can say is … prepare to lose some sleep over this one. And the final chapter leads to a cliffhanger that will leave readers desperate for Book II.

I am a lifelong reader of fantasy, and out of what I’d guess to be nearly 1,000 books read to date, this book series is in my top five. Catling’s Bane is easily on par with the likes of Patrick Rothfuss (The Kingkiller Chronicle series), Karen Miller (the “Mage” series) and Glenda Larke (Stormlord series). I’m confident that many readers will, like me, add this one to their top shelf.

on March 20, 2017

I’m usually not one for the Historical Romance genre. Mostly due to my own misconceptions regarding the flowery language, which makes me laugh uncontrollably, and book covers slathered with Fabio, who is NOT my idea of a handsome man.

This book on the other hand was amazing! No “touching bosoms” or Fabio to be found here, just a saucy romance between Benjamin and Samantha with a classic who-dun-it thrown in. I always love a good mystery and this one did not disappoint.

After the death of her brother Samantha is called back from the family estate to assist her sister-in-law with handling her brother’s finances. Samantha is a no nonsense woman who doesn’t need a man or high society to feel complete. Little does she know that both are going to come beckoning quicker than she thinks.

Benjamin is a notorious rake who has finally decided to settle down. There’s just one thing he has to do before he can pursue his own happy ending. As Samantha’s new guardian Benjamin is responsible for choosing her husband. One look at her though and all thoughts of anyone else but him filling her marriage bed leave him with a sour taste in his mouth.

I absolutely loved this book. As a debut novel goes, Ms. Drake has smashed it out of the park. As a matter of fact I didn’t even know this was a debut novel until I went on Amazon and read it in another review. The writing is excellent and witty with engaging characters and great dialog.

As with any genre there are hits and misses, this book is definitely a hit. I would gladly recommend this to all my bookish friends. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next installment.

And now for Stevie Turner and her latest book, the memoir Waiting in the Wings that was released at the end of last year.

About the memoir.

At the grand old age of 92, my mother Dot suddenly starts telling me that she loves me. I am quite dumbstruck at these outbursts of emotion, as she has never mentioned the fact before in all of my 58 years. Over the entire course of my lifetime we have often argued bitterly, and have never really seen eye-to-eye over anything. I squirm with the inner knowledge that she wants me to reply in a similar vein, but try as I might, I cannot.

The guilt I feel at being unable to grant Dot her wish is overwhelming. As Dot’s health deteriorates more towards the final chapters of her life, I take on the role of carer. I find the only way to bring her out of her perpetual misery is to reminisce on past events by showing her old family photographs, and by helping her to remember holidays and happier times. We look back without anger and sometimes with a lot of laughter, getting to know each other better, raking over the past, and talking more than we have ever done. The process helps me, a middle-aged woman, understand the perils of ageing that I might one day face, and also the struggles that elderly people suffer on a day-to-day basis while stoically attempting to maintain their independence.

This is a true story, told in flashbacks and in modern-day often humorous conversations with my mother.

Turner’s memoir is an insightful story about a mother and daughter relationship that has moved to a new dimension. Throughout the author’s life she struggled with her relationship with her mother. Dot was set in her ways and always seemed to be trying to conform Stevie to what she wanted her to be. The angst Stevie felt growing up with Dot is documented through this touching and heartfelt memoir as Dot is now old and being an only child, Stevie has taken on the roll to care for her aging invalid mother.

Dot struggles to maintain her independence, making Stevie’s job somewhat more difficult to tend to Dot with her whims and antics, but it seems that the two find a common bond while exchanging stories from the past where Dot can be happy reliving her younger days, and where Turner establishes a common ground with memories they can bond over.

Many stories are shared from Turner’s childhood, about living under the eagle eye of Dot. We learn to understand that as much as Dot loved her daughter, she didn’t know how to show her love, which became a difficult burden for Turner to give her mother love in return.

As a child, Turner was tired of Dot’s OCD ways of life, and as a result, rebelled as many a child will do, with vowing not to be like her mother. Through this story, Dot’s anal ways could drive a sane person mad at times. Dot didn’t know how to show love and emotion and her methods of thinking she was doing so as a good mother were to nag at and not encourage her daughter for the attributes she possessed, but rather harped on how she thought her daughter should dress, and live her life, driving Turner batty, resulting in her wanting to keep in her own comfort zone, much as a loner.

As a memoirist myself, I know the angst of feeling sorry for an aging mother who never fulfilled me emotionally, and similar to Turner’s life, I understand the position she was in, finding it difficult to be able to tell her own mother that she loved her when the words were foreign to her all of her life. It brings a heart-crushing feeling when you can’t bring yourself to respond with those words, ‘I love you’, as I sensed the pathetic non-verbal pleading in my own mother too, wanting to hear me say those difficult words.

I highly recommend this book, not only for the manner in which it was written with entertainment value, but for anyone who has or is struggling with an aging parent, finding it difficult to forgive the past and to learn that there is always a way to make amends.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – Author Update – John W. Howell, Alyssa Drake and Sally Cronin

author-update-jpgFirst a brand new look for John Howell’s first book in the John Cannon Series… fabulous new cover and a book that I definitely enjoyed and reviewed. If you are considering reading John’s books I suggest that you start with My GRL and get to know his hero.

And a review for the new edition.

My GRL is the first of the John Cannon series. Having read the second book, His Revenge, and the third and final book, Our Justice, I wanted to complete the series with My GRL. Each book is independent of the others; however, there is a definite overlap which adds depth and intrigue.

MyGRL is the first of a 3-book series. In this book, the foundation is set and much like Jack Webb on the old Dragnet series, the reader is introduced to the world of John Cannon through first-person monologues. I commend the writer on his skill to successfully engage the reader in the present, such that we walk with the protagonist through his various hurdles – which are many.

Terror becomes real within the first chapter. And, from this moment forward, the reader joins John Cannon in trying to understand what is going on, who can be trusted, and how to circumvent the threatened horror.

This book earns 5-stars from me, as did His Revenge and Our Justice. They are all well-written and scarily timely.

Delighted to share a very recent review for the debut novel of Alyssa Drake which was promoted here last year.. It has received 49 reviews which is terrific and delighted that not only is the book doing so well but people are clamouring for book number two.

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.

When Samantha’s brother, Edward, is killed while travelling to France, she is called away from her country home, back to the city and world she worked hard to stay away from. Benjamin was Edward’s best friend, and was supposed to find Samantha a husband. He was not expecting his reaction to her, the little girl is all grown up and every possible husband is rejected by Benjamin. When Edward’s disappearance turns out to be foul play, Samantha’s life is in danger, and Benjamin is running out of time.

First up: CLIFF HANGER!!! We all have that love hate thing for cliff hangers and I did not see this one creeping up on me!! I was loving this book, really enjoying it and then THAT happened and I was not a happie chappie, not at all.

Second: First time author. And you really can’t tell!! I only know this, because I went to look for future books in this series, and can’t find any of them, nor any other books by this author! Excellent work, Ms Drake, very well done.

I did get who might be up to no good, very early on and I loved watching things become clearer. Love having at all laid out as much as I love being kept on my toes. But while we know WHOdunnit, we don’t know the WHY they did it, not yet.

The book open with a murder ten years previous (we get that from the murderer’s point of view, so loved that!) which turns out to be Edward and Samantha’s father. Then there is Edward’s disappearance, and some missing jewellery. It all comes together, or at least its BEGINNING to come together, then I ran out of bloody book!!

So, book two, Ms Drake?? When should we expect that, because I want to know what happens to Samantha and Benjamin but also what Benjamin’s mother is up to, taking in that young lady, and whether what I see happening between that young lady and Thomas, Benjamin’s twin, actually happens.

4.5 stars, but rounded down to 4 cos Goodreads/Amazon/the blog don’t do half stars

And as a final update I am delighted to say that Tales from the Garden has received a new review from author N.A. Granger.. This is one of the benefits of being on the shelves of your own bookstore.

tales-from-the-garden

About the book

Tales from the Garden reveals the secrets that are hidden beneath hedges and trees. You will discover what really happens at night as you sleep unaware in your bed. Stone statues and those hidden worlds within the earth are about to share their stories. The guardians who have kept the sanctuary safe for over fifty years will allow you to peek behind the scenes of this magical place. They will take you on a journey through time and expand your horizons as they transport you to the land of fairies, butterflies and lost souls who have found a home here.
Fairy Stories for children of all ages from five to ninety-five that will change the way you look at your garden forever.

Noelle Granger’s review: https://saylingaway.wordpress.com/2017/03/06/book-review-tales-from-the-garden-by-sally-cronin-scg58-children-fairy-tales/

This is a collection of imaginative stories giving life to the various stone creatures that inhabit her garden: lions, eagles, dogs, dwarves, butterflies, young boys and beautiful girls, and of course the world of fairies living under the magnolia tree. All of them come alive at night and there is a story about each of them – how they came to live there, how they contribute to the busy life of the garden.

The author imbues each of these creatures with a charming personality and a backstory that reminds the reader of long ago folktales. The writing is smooth with a gentle quality and effortlessly provides lessons in responsibility, loyalty, love, and respect. This adult was transported back to her childhood and was left smiling and a little bereft after the last page, reminding me of The Borrowers, one of my early favorites.

I highly recommend this book to the parents of young children – it will be on the list of books that I give each year – and I hope all who read this review will indulge their inner child and get a copy for themselves.

Ten stars if it were possible!

My first book was promoted  in the Autumn Reading series and here is one of the latest reviews for Mackenzie’s Distraction by Angie Dokos.

51et2jncwzl-_uy250_

About the book

Mackenzie’s Distraction is a New Adult Romance about a young lady with a rough past and a promising future. Just when her career is within reach, tragedy strikes. A terrible accident and a family secret turn Mackenzie’s world upside down. She’s sure her life can’t become any more complicated, then she meets Trevor. Will he be just what she needs or the distraction that pushes her over the edge?

The latest review for the book.

Family . . . . Death . . . Tragedy . . . . Secrets . . . . Challenges . . . . Survival . . . . Growth . . . . Love . . . . Romance . . . . Marriage . . . . Happiness

According to the author, this is the art of a fictional story. But while reading those pages, it felt as though I was walking alongside a journey of true-to-life characters. That is how crafted this author’s writing style was. And what an amazing skill, as a first-time author!
I won’t go into details of this story and what it’s all about since others have ALREADY done so. But I will say . . .

Truly, I was highly impressed with how this author initially drew out the colorization of characters and scenes. In my life, I’ve read a many fictional tales which weaken the style of creativity and development. And when that does happen, one’s story becomes less moving and limits its connection to characterization and scenery. But that was not the case, here, for the works of “Mackenzie’s Distraction.”

Yes indeed, quite a bit was happening in the life of Mackenzie. So, one could readily see how easy it was to become distracted. This title was definitely a great fit for the story. And the cover design . . . well, it made an even better mix. And as an author, (knowingly) those two elements go hand-in-hand in pumping out a great product. There was no doubt this author knew the literary formula for what it took . . . in giving readers a measurable creation.

I must confess, though, there were some areas where the storytelling tended to shift to those “tell me” moments, rather than continuing with “show me” ones. It is those types of moments (the show me ones) that beautifies the characters’ emotions and polishes the scenery (and places its readers in the moment). But then again, this was classified as a fictional tale and not a non-fictional one. Seemingly, its weight didn’t take from the overall structured development. Now, should this author create for us (readers) a non-fictional tale, I’d hope those show me moments jump off the page and stand out at ya.

This book is at less worthy of no less than a 4 ½ star rating, but no indications for such a rating. In that case, I plugged in a “five-star” rating simply for the deep thought processes, those points at the “show me moments” (that I read), points of colorization of its characters/scenes, and its overall development of such a storyline. And notwithstanding the fact, it kept my interest. Truly, with the depth of pages, it had to take (the writer/author) a great deal of thinking to lay it out, plot it out, and bring it out to closure.

Really, I suggest readers make their own judgment . . . not just ‘cause I found it an interesting read. Having such a product under her wings, I’m looking forward to the author’s next work of art. Kudos, to you (Angie) for this creation!

The next book in the update is an historical romance set in the Victorian era and released in May this year.  A Perfect Plan (Book 1) by Alyssa Drake is enjoying terrific reviews.

51njcouprl-_uy250_About the book

Amazing debut! By louvejita on November 20, 2016

Samantha Hastings is not your typical debutante. Orphaned at a young age, growing up in the country isolated from society and the unladylike teachings of her older brother, have made her into a fierce, independent and totally inappropriate young woman, who’d rather walk barefoot in the park than having tea and trumpets in a countess’ sitting room.

After her brother’s sudden passing, she’s required by her sister-in-law to come to town and help tend to the accounts and she then finds herself being dragged to society functions in Lady Hastings’ hope of finding a proper suitor to get her married.

Lord Benjamin Westwood was charged with the delicate task of acting guardian for Samantha in the absence of her brother, but when he finally catches a glimpse of grown up “little Sam”, he realizes the task at hand is going to be more difficult than expected when his attraction to her proves an obstacle to marrying her off.

When a book starts with a murder, at least for me, it’s bound to be good. If you add to that a smart mouth heroine and a no nonsense rakish hero, it’s right up my alley and this book had it all!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story from beginning to end. It’s fun, fast paced, well written, the characters are nicely developed and properly related and the mystery surrounding the Hastings family makes for a great read. I also liked the secondary characters and the buildup the author created for the following stories in the series.

There are some minor things to be worked on, but this is a great start for a debut author.

The final book in today’s update is the brand new release from Nicholas C. Rossis. Pearseus: End Game (book 4 of the Pearseus epic fantasy series) was released on December 1st.

endgame

Cyrus will risk everything to gain back his throne. But new enemies are waiting for him; enemies that will stop at nothing to destroy humanity once and for all. With the Capital invading Anthea and the north in turmoil, every step of the journey is fraught with peril. In a world falling apart, can Cyrus and his friends prevent humanity’s extinction?

“A creative and unforgettable series that will one day become a gem among sci-fi fantasy books.”  ~ Janice Spina

About the Series

Loosely based on the 5th BC Persian Wars, Pearseus mixes science fiction with epic fantasy and paranormal elements. From a grieving father who faces his darkest choice between revenge and honoring his vows, to a terrified boy struggling to find his way home, our heroes must overcome politics, murder, and betrayal as they become ever more embroiled in a war against an ancient enemy. A war that threatens to destroy the whole of humanity.

Other books in the Pearseus Series and the Prequel Schism

51lgjotvs3l-_uy250_51uesghpqul-_uy250_51opxj9hubl-_uy250_61xi95ogtul-_uy250_The series has received outstanding reviews and here is a small selection.

It’s New Year’s Eve, the year of 2099, but the distinguished guests aboard the Pearseus won’t get to countdown seconds; soon they’ll be counting bodies and survivors after the spaceship’s crash landing on another planet. The good news? The planet is seemingly hospitable both in resources and in terms of the natives’ attitude towards earthlings. The bad news? They might have come on this planet bare of possessions, but what they haven’t been able to shed are the shortcomings of their human nature. Will that be the sole threat to a unified future, or is the new land and its first inhabitants not as innocent as they look?

This is a fantastic (literally and figuratively) prequel that lays the groundwork for what looks like an exciting sci-fi/fantasy series. If my instinct is right (and the other excellent reviews confirm it) apart from an adventure, Nicholas C. Rossis will weave a story where philosophical and historical issues will be raised, raising the bar for both the reader and the genre as a whole. I’m really glad I bought and read this thoroughly enjoyable book because now I already know my next read: Pearseus, the Rise of the Prince, the first full-length novel of the series.

Pearseus: Rise of the Prince by Nicholas Rossis is the second book of a unique and well-written Epic Fantasy series, with elements of Sci-Fi and Mythology, and just a touch of Horror thrown in the mix.

The plot of the book is both well-paced and completely absorbing, with many exciting twists and turns along the way.
I enjoyed the characters, good and evil alike, who were realistic and believeable. I found the character, Styx, to be particularly genuine and intriguing. In spite of her ruthless and evil ruler ship, she truly believes that her methods are not only necessary, but for the greater good, and therefore, completely justified.

I very much enjoyed Pearseus: Rise of the Prince, and do recommend it to all who love an exceptional Epic Fantasy tale.

The Epic Continues By Catherine Mackay on February 27, 2015

I received a copy of Vigil from the author because of the review which I gave the Pearseus bundle. This is an awesome continuation of the series – the action just doesn’t stop. The author carries the different threads of the story seamlessly – Rossis skips from character to character as he progresses each character’s story and the overall plot-lines.

In this book you have a sense of the world slowly, but surely falling into the abyss as Teo turns his attention on Anthea while others are content to wait and watch before deciding to support Anthea or the Capital. Meanwhile we learn more about Pratin and what motivates him even while he hides in the background supporting Teo’s desire for power, but of course not for reasons that Teo might think. Manipulation, power and greed are the name of the game through each of the Pearseus series – the Iota, Orbs, Whispers, First, and Newcomers all have their own agenda.

Will any of the races on Pearseus find unity together? Or will the whole of Pearseus turn to madness . What I love about this book are the well developed characters – even the bad guys – as well as the strong, developed plot lines, the Pearseus universe is a fusion of Greek and Eastern influences – all of which makes for a very unique, exciting and epic story. Totally looking forward to the next book. Highly recommend this book and the other Pearseus books which I rate highly along with such books as Dune and Game of Thrones, and Lord of the Rings and Saga of the Seven Suns.

A selection of reviews for the book

Such a quick read! A historical romance isn’t my usual read but I’m always willing to give romance a chance and I’m so glad I did! I enjoyed Samantha Hastings so very much; if I could go back in time to 1853 I would act just like her. And let me fan myself while I think of Lord Benjamin Westwood! That man right there is all I would need for the rest of my days! This book gives you laughter, love, mystery and murder; it’s everything you could need in a book.

If you enjoy romance then read this one for sure. The author does leave you with a cliffhanger and I may of messaged her asking for the rest of it because I need to know what happens next. I’ll be keeping my eye out for the next one so I know what happens with Benjamin and Samantha.

This book is the first book in the Wiltshire Chronicles and a debut book by Alyssa Drake. This beautiful time period book was both mysterious and funny. As you experience the antics of Samantha a young beautiful woman who is full of life and spunk and the rake Benjamin that she falls in love with. You are also caught up in the mystery of finding out who murdered her father which is the scene that opens this book and has you guessing the why and who til the very last moment. This was a wonderful exciting book that i thoroughly enjoyed. It has you laughing, crying, and trying to figure out who could possibly have done it. It holds your attention til the very last page of the book giving you laughs, love, and mystery in a way that has you traveling the gamut of emotions. Can’t wait to read the next installment of this wonderful series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I was rooting from the beginning for the ward and the guardian to wind up together. The chemistry between these two just jumped off the pages. Sam and Benjamin deserved to find happiness with one another.

However, trouble, murder and mystery await them both. Who will live? Who will die? Who will get their HEA?

I want to read the next book right this moment to get those answers! And that epilogue… what a tease! But I have to say, I saw it coming.

Must. Have. Next. Book!

About Alyssa Drake

61ftgpfspl-_ux250_

Author Alyssa Drake has been creating stories since she could read, preferring to construct her own bedtime tales instead of reading the titles in her bookshelves. Enraptured with all types of writing, Alyssa has tried her hand at short stories, collaborations and poetry. However, her first love has always been books. She thoroughly enjoys strong heroines and often laughs aloud when visualizing conversations between her characters.

Alyssa graduated from the University of the Pacific, with a B.S. in business and a concentration in French literature. Currently she resides in Northern California with her blended family, where she works full-time at a chocolate factory.

She believes everyone is motivated by love of someone or something. One of her favorite diversions is fabricating stories about strangers surrounding her on public transportation. Alyssa can often be found madly scribbling notes on a train or daydreaming out the window as the scenery whips past.
