This week children’s author Barbara Ann Mojica shares here review of Sam the Speedy Sloth by Matthew Ralph.

About the book

Sloths are slow, right? Think again! Packed with colorful rainforest and animal illustrations, this rhyming picture book follows Sam The Speedy Sloth as he goes on a jungle adventure. This is a sloth book like no other.

Sam’s Mom hugged him and looked at her son. “There’s no one like you. You’re the only one. Comparing yourself to others, won’t get you far. Learn to love how unique you are.”

Challenging the other rain forest animals to a race, Sam learns some important life lessons along the way about being unique, self-confident and not comparing yourself to others. Children will also find a bunch of fun learning activities, including spot the difference, a word search and even fact files for the jungle animals in this book.

Perfect for all children of all ages, who will love listening to Sam’s adventure, which makes Sam the Speedy Sloth ideal for bedtime stories, group reading, or one-on-one with loving parents or grandparents. It is also perfect for special occasions and makes a cute birthday, Christmas or baby shower gift.

Barbara’s review for the book

Sam is an unusual sloth. Unlike the rest of his species, Sam does not enjoy sleeping or staying inactive. One day he searches the rainforest for a playmate.

He meets Tammy the Toucan, Amy the Armadillo, and Oscar the Otto. Each has a favorite game, but they do not share the same set of skills. Will they be able to find a game in which each can use their unique talent to excel?

This charmingly illustrated picture book teaches children about animals of the South American jungle. They also learn that individual differences are not a roadblock to friendship and shared activities.

This book is a good choice for preschoolers as well as primary grade readers. In addition to the tale, readers are challenged by interactive activities like finding the hidden fruits, spotting the differences in pictures, word scrambles, and a fun fact pages on each of the animals featured in the book.

Maria Catalina Egan 5.0 out of 5 stars Empathy and Understanding  Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2020

I was floored by this book. I did not expect the ending. I thought it was like a few other ones I have read, and good. But SPOILER when the book addressed Alopecia and took it to another level. THAT makes this a STAD OUT READ!

The little girls search for identity and desire to fit in, is very well written, but then when the author cleverly adds the layer of understanding that there is so much more to life than vanity I was floored. BRAVO a FIVE STAR unless I can give more!!!!

Yvi MC VINE VOICE  5.0 out of 5 stars Hours of fun for bakers of all ages! Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2020

This book is part of a series, but this is the first book I’ve read. It’s super cute! The author is quite talented in telling tales through rhyming poetry. In the first section of this book, you learn about Sir Chocolate and the Ice Cream Rainbow Fairies. Each character is beautifully described, and the plot creates a wonderful read for children (of all ages).

Following the story are several recipes that will delight any baker – blissful blondies, fantastic fudge balls, cheese and bacon scones, strawberry jelly cupcakes, and beautiful biscotti. This is a great book for a parent and child to read together and then spend hours of fun making the recipes. I highly recommend this book to parents with young children and to anyone who enjoys baking. 🙂

The final children’s book today is Little Miss HISTORY Travels to Hyde Park, Home of FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT Presidential Library & Museum by Barbara Ann Mojica

About the book

“My heart has always been here. It always will be.” Often called, “The Summer White House,” FDR returned to his birth home at Hyde Park as many as 200 times during his twelve-year term as President. Here FDR entertained foreign dignitaries like Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth.

Roosevelt was the first president to give his papers to the people. Today, the Presidential Museum at Hyde Park is a premier research center that contains exhibits from the Great Depression, the New Deal, and World War II.

Step inside the house where FDR made history.

Another great tale! As always, Ms. Mojica has combined the abilities of young people and adults alike into her stories. Not everyone can weave a historical tale into something that all ages can enjoy.

She had me at the first picture of the interior of Hyde Park. What’s not to love about sweeping staircases?

She gives a short history on Roosevelt’s life, along with his accomplishments and the contributions he made for the betterment of society, followed by a short tour of the house Roosevelt lovingly called home.

I strongly believe that her series is the number-one choice for those looking to instill the love of history into their children
