Smokers

Smoke is puffed over the top of the frames, to calm the bee colony when inspecting a hive.

Scraps of newspaper are first set on fire inside a metal container in the smoker, before adding pine needles to create smoke for the inspection.

The smoke is then dispensed using the small bellows attached to the main metal container.

Hive Inspection

The roof of the hive is removed gently to allow for close inspection, before smoke is puffed over the top of the frames.

You will see that these outer frames are beginning to get covered in wax comb by the bees. You can also see small residues on the inside cover.

About John Rieber

I love great food, interesting books, fascinating travel, outrageous movies, and bacon, especially when it sits on top of a great cheeseburger! I work in entertainment – and I have been lucky enough to interview some really talented Artists – that guides my posts: interesting and provocative movies, music, social media and of course, food, since I believe strongly in the maxim, “everyone eats!”

And finally today, our resident food expert Carol has a very whimsical post on Wednesdays and here is a snippet from this week….everything from National Cheeseburger Day (and one in a can), The Royal Opera House and the upcoming Oktoberfests…something for everyone…

Thank you once again for joining me on Whimsical Wednesday when anything goes..wherever my thoughts take me or when something stops me in my tracks and makes me think or when something just wows me…

So come with me and see what has astonished or wowed me this week and what memories have been evoked…Wednesday is the day when I leave controversy at the door…It is the day I can reminisce and indulge myself..generally about things past…Yes, I get maudlin…But memories are good..sometimes they make you a little sad as you wish you could see that person or be in that place and that time again and for a moment or two you are….Enjoy!

Today there are two National Days…Actually more than two but none which piqued my interest…National Play-Doh Day…Yes, mums, dads and grandparents…

Do you really love Play-Doh as much as the kids? I blimmin didn’t… it got stuck everywhere…In the hair, in the carpet, on the clothes, the dog and it stuck fast…

Fast forward….It is National Cheeseburger Day

One of the recent reviews for the book

A fascinating read through all the naturopathic and alternative remedies Brigid has been involved in. Clearly a very active and intelligent person, she applied herself to learning, teaching and living the naturopathic principals. Many people will owe much to her knowledge and generosity in sharing her gifts.

Her own health problems dictated a new path and a need to slow down and take care of herself. Her new pace of life has resulted in this book on life lessons and the importance of slow. We are the happy beneficiaries. Thank you for your insights Brigid!

The next author with recent reviews for his latest release James J. Cudney for the third book in the Braxton Campus Mysteries Flower Power Trip.

About the book

At a masquerade ball to raise money for renovations to Memorial Library, Kellan finds a dead body dressed in a Dr. Evil costume.

Did one of Maggie’s sisters kill the annoying guest who’d been staying at the Roarke and Daughters Inn, or does the victim have a closer connection to someone else at Braxton College?

As Kellan helps school president Ursula bury a secret from her past and discover the identity of her stalker, he unexpectedly encounters a missing member of his family. Everything seems to trace back to the Stoddards: a new family who recently moved in.

Between the murder, a special flower exhibit and strange postcards arriving each week, Kellan can’t decide which mystery in his life should take priority. But unfortunately, the biggest one of all has yet to be exposed – and when it is, Kellan won’t know what hit him.

One of the recent reviews for the book

A great addition to the ‘Braxton Campus ‘ mystery series by James Cudney! Definitely my favorite thus far and the author has improved so much from the first book!! Intriguing characters that you enjoy spending time with, great plots that keep you guessing and many twists that keep the story interesting from start to finish, with that little cliffhanger that has you eager to read the next book.

I have never been a big cozy reader, but this series has definitely pulled me right in! Kellen Ayrwick is a Dad of young girl,a nice guy to all and has a wife all believe is dead after a car accident..But she is Not..His family are an interesting bunch, with his Nana D the ‘grand marshal’ of all she surveys. A great friend is receiving death threats and asks Kellen to help her find out just what is going on!

Lots of action with laughs and tears as a certain ‘ stranger’ turns out to be closer to his prey than anyone could imagine!

The final author today with a review is Paulette Mahurin – Irma’s Endgame…a crime thriller….

As with all Paulette’s books, profits from will go to rescue dogs from kill shelters.

About Irma’s Endgame.

When newspaper headlines screamed in large bold print that one of the world’s leading heart-transplant surgeons, Peter Dayton, was arrested for the death of one of his transplant patients, shock waves were felt around the world. Particularly impacted was an attorney, Irma Mullins, who found it inconceivable that the man she once loved could have committed the heinous act for which he had been arrested. Determined to find out what happened, she embarks on a course of action to uncover the truth. But when all paths lead to one dead-end after another, and Dayton continues to maintain his innocence, she detours.

Through desperation, frustration, fear, and determination she grasps at thin threads for anything that might uncover facts to help exonerate Dayton. What she ultimately discovers is both shocking and unbelievable. Written by the award-winning, international best-selling author, Paulette Mahurin, Irma’s Endgame is a story of friendship and loyalty, of betrayal and revenge, of mystery and discovery, of enmity and love. It is a narrative that shakes the very core of the scientific ground we all walk on and proves that what we think is real is not always solid terrain. This is a novel that will be remembered long after the last page is finished.

One of the recent reviews for the book

For anyone who has been skeptical about reading an indie author this is a great book to start with and proof that indie publishing can produce high quality content equal to if not better than traditionally published novels. The book is a fast paced medical mystery that separates itself from the norm with in depth character and plot development with riveting prose that include so many enticing one liners I just had to keep reading. At the end of every chapter I just had to continue reading, not wanting to put the book down as the story unfolded. My favorite one liner “If only thoughts created reality.” Excellent read and a job very well done.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – Author Update – #Reviews…Brigid P. Gallagher, James J. Cudney, Diana J. Febry and Ted Halstead

Welcome to the first of the Cafe updates this week

The first review is for the memoir by  Brigid P. Gallagher that shares her experiences and also strategies to overcome chronic illness in Watching for the Daisies.

About the book

Millions of people around the world suffer from fibromyalgia; the majority of them are women. As yet, there is no cure.

In 2006, she began a new career in Organic Horticulture eventually teaching part time in schools. Although she has now retired from teaching, she continues to pursue her lifelong passion for gardening and watching the daisies.

One of the recent reviews for the book

Watching the Daisies is a memoir with a difference. It commences in the seventies then follows Brigid’s journey of discovery into alternative medicine and a philosophy of life she had developed. When reading this book, I felt the calm and soothing effect if the author’s voice and loved the wisdom she has learned throughout her life.

Before reading this book, I was unfamiliar with the range of therapies and now feel as if I have been introduced to a new wisdom of complementary medicine that enhances wellbeing. There is information about reflexology, aromatherapy, crystal healing. Colour healing radionics, spiritual healing, meditation, geopathic stress, space clearing, counselling, Feng Shui and more. I enjoyed learning how the author had used the therapies with patients and in her own life. New therapies and ancient wisdom are combined in the memoir.

The memoir examines how one can use the energy from the ebb and flow of life to move forwards and cope with life. Brigid is a natural medicine pioneer and demonstrates how we can use alternative and traditional medicine, but the key is to ask questions about one’s health and explore options for healing.

Serenity and kindness dominate the narrative voice thus making me feel as if I was in the safe hands of the author. This was a great book to soothe the soul at the end of the day. Brigid demonstrates ‘the healing journey may be slow, but there are nuggets of gold on every corner.’ The book did make me slow down and reflect and I now understand the title.

ShrykespeareTop Contributor: Action Figures 5.0 out of 5 stars A mystery series worthy of your time May 8, 2019

I can’t get over just how complex and multi-layered James Cudney makes his mysteries. There’s so much going on, with multiple subplots and a myriad of colorful characters filling the pages; and yet, I never had trouble following the progression of events.

Once again, Kellen Aywrick is called upon to solve a murder when a man is murdered at a costume party. It turns out the man was not who he claimed to be, and in order to keep one of his good friends from taking the fall, Kellen must use all his sleuth skills to suss out the guilty party.

The rich tapestry of the setting, populating by such rich characters as Kellen’s six-year-old daughter Emma and his irrepressible grandmother Nana D, are what breathe life into Cudney’s stories, and Flower Power Trip is no exception.

Time now to share the recent review for Diana J. Febry and her first book in her DCI Peter Hatherall Mysteries – The Skeletons of Birkbury

About the book

When the body of a teenage girl is discovered in Birkbury, the villagers close ranks. Gossip turns to fear and suspicion as they realize the killer is one of them and is prepared to kill again.

DCI Peter Hatherall must fight his past and class divisions to find the killer.
All must decide which secrets are worth dying for.

One of the recent reviews for The Skeletons of Birkbury

Mar 23, 2019 Book Squirrel rated it Five Stars

A very good mystery read.

One of the biggest mistakes a person can make is to believe that the events of the past will remain there.

There are plenty of people in this book who are dealing with the ghosts and skeletons of the past, some with powerful and tragic consequences.

The Skeletons of Birkbury is a very enjoyable and well-constructed mystery story, set in a seemingly normal English village populated by believable characters, most of whom seem quite likeable and all of whom seek to keep up appearances of respectability.

Whose ghostly chickens are about to come home to roost? And which members of the community will fail to get out of the way as they do?

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore Update #Reviews #News – Audrey Driscoll, Brigid P. Gallagher, Christoph Fischer and Shehanne Moore

Welcome to the first of the week’s author updates and we begin with fantasy author Audrey Driscoll and her  latest release She Who Comes Forth.

About She Who Comes Forth

The novel is a standalone sequel to the Herbert West Series. Readers who enjoy a combination of realistic adventure and supernatural elements in an exotic setting — Luxor, Egypt and the Theban Necropolis — may wish to have a look.

October 1962. The developing nuclear missile crisis in Cuba is of no concern to Francesca “France” Leighton. Recently turned 21, France travels from her home in Providence to a job at an archaeological dig in Luxor, Egypt. She takes with her two legacies—an emerald ring from the grandfather she never knew, and an antique cello from his friend, a man she loved like a grandfather.

The dig disappoints. France is relegated to sorting chunks of stone, the dig’s director makes unwanted advances; rivalries and mistrust are everywhere. And it’s too darn hot! Tasked with playing her cello at a gathering of archaeologists, France meets the enigmatic and fascinating nuclear physicist Adam Dexter. She’s smitten, especially when he promises to show her the secrets of Egypt, including a hitherto undiscovered tomb.

After a risky balloon cruise ends in a crash landing, France is forced to leave the dig. Despite warnings against solo explorations on the west bank, she finds herself with Adam Dexter in an eerie house near the Theban Necropolis. Adam’s promises are alluring, but he is both more and less than he seems and his motivations are disturbing. Fleeing his house, France makes a horrifying discovery.

Through an image of Osiris, France discovers the true reason for her presence in the Theban Necropolis. As the world teeters on the brink of nuclear war, she must call upon resources both within and beyond herself to meet the perils that await her in the world of the dead beneath the Western Peak.

One of the recent reviews for the book

This book has everything: Exotic setting? Check. Fem lit? Check. Horror, ancient Egyptian mysteries, three dimensional characters? Yes, yes, yes!

The story takes place in Egypt in the mid 20th Century. This is one of the few novels I’ve read with a foreign location that I appreciated. It didn’t feel like a story taken from Anywhere, USA, and plopped into an exotic locale just to appeal to readers with wanderlust. The setting Driscoll creates is textural, full of sounds, full of colors . . . a treat!

Driscoll also created realistic characters you’ll fear, loathe, or love. Adam is so eerie he’ll make you stop reading just to check the dark corners in the room. The professor is a creep, ew. France Leighton, the protagonist, is smart, adorably imperfect, brave, and lovable. There’s even a cello character named Eudora. (Yes, a CELLO. And be careful or you’ll develop a crush on Eudora. She’s charming!)

Readers who enjoy more literary-type stories will get a kick out of all the symbolism in the book. Driscoll especially uses colors and music, and these symbols tie in well with the ancient Egyptians’ reverence for the meaning of colors and the music of their ceremonies.

Pros: Everything I’ve mentioned already plus breath-holding, suspenseful, scenes filled with ancient spirits.

Cons: For SOME readers, the action may drag. I like a slow burn because I think it builds up the suspense and makes the climax even that much scarier, so I won’t take a star off for this. The only other con I can think of is the title is not compelling. It ties in with the storyline, but if I saw a list of titles without any taglines or blurbs or book covers, I’d pass over this title. But really, what I think of as an imperfect title doesn’t take away from the genius of the book, so I can’t take a star away for this, either.

Overall, an enthusiastic five stars!

It’s very rare nowadays that I can pick up a book and I know without doubt that I’m going to enjoy reading before the end of the first page. I really enjoyed this book, it had everything that I enjoy reading about. Positivity, spirituality, hope and common sense.

Following Bridget’s inspiring life, written with frankness and honesty. I just wanted to curl up and read it in one go but time restraints did not permit. However it is a book that can be picked up and put down and by doing that I prolonged the pleasure of reading it.

It follows the life of Bridget and the triumphs and obstacles placed on her journey and how she pushed through the challenges of ill health with determination. I felt like I had been alongside side her when she described her travels enjoying each experience that came with each holiday. I felt the heat, I could smell the smells, I was there.!

I read this book whilst going through a difficult time myself and it really did help me. So thank you Bridget, I’m no gardener but I can appreciate yours and I can’t wait for your next book.

But when the callously irresistible Captain James “Flint” Blackmoore sails back into her life, Lady Fury panics. She must find a way to protect herself—and her future—from the man she’d rather see rotting in hell than sleeping in her bed. If she must bed him to keep her secrets, so be it. But she doesn’t have to like it. A set of firm rules for the bedroom will ensure that nothing goes awry. Because above all else, she must stop herself from wanting the one thing that Flint can never give her. His heart.

Ex-privateer Flint Blackmoore has never been good at following the rules. Now, once again embroiled in a situation with the aptly named Lady Fury, he has no idea why he doesn’t simply do the wise thing and walk away. He knows he’s playing with fire, and that getting involved with her again is more dangerous than anything on the high seas. But he can’t understand why she’s so determined to hate him. He isn’t sure if the secret she keeps will make things harder—or easier—for him, but as the battle in the bedroom heats up, he knows at least one thing. Those silly rules of hers will have to go…

One of the reviews for the previous edition

Do you ever read a book that you love so much that you talk about it to people and they just don’t understand why you’re getting so hyped up?

Well, this was one of those books for me.

It was a fantastic read. Right from page one I knew it was going to be a book I’d enjoy.

Fury (a great name for a character) was a great female leading character, she was strong but not annoyingly so. After finding herself in a difficult position, she makes a difficult decision, and I can believe her motivations and really got behind her character throughout the book.

As for Captain Flint, well, I can’t actually talk about this character without swooning into a girly heap on the floor. What a character! I have such intense views on this character I can barely even type. At the start he was the kind of guy that I’d hate, but I found myself falling for him through every word! I couldn’t stop myself. The author did an absolutely brilliant job at making me love this character.

The story was excellent, with a plot I found really unique and some twists and turns that I did not expect, which was really nice. Even after the author had left hints, it was still a surprise. Shehanne drew me into the writing and plot so deeply I found I couldn’t pull back to look at it from the big picture because I was too connected to the characters and what would come next!

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves steamy romance with great characters and writing that drags you into the story.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – Buy a Book for Christmas #Memoirs – Brigid P. Gallagher, Chuck Jackson, Karen Ingalls and D.G. Kaye

Today I am featuring some of the memoirs in the Cafe and Bookstore. Until the publishing revolution which gave back the power to writers.. memoirs were tell-all stories, often ghost written, by the rich and infamous. Today we can all tell our stories, and these true experiences are invaluable to others who may have gone through something similar. From overcoming disease, abuse, life threatening events, these memoirs inspire, inform and encourage others to speak out or to accept that they are not alone and help is available.

Memoirs can be tough to read, but so many of us carry a burden that we would like to lay down, and discovering other’s courage can help us do that.

The first memoir is by Brigid P. Gallagher and shares her experiences and also strategies to overcome chronic illness in Watching for the Daisies.

About the book

Millions of people around the world suffer from fibromyalgia; the majority of them are women. As yet, there is no cure.

In this memoir, Brigid P. Gallagher shares her experiences on:

  • The busy life she followed before succumbing to this debilitating disease
  • Stopping and soul searching for answers to her vast array of symptoms
  • Entering a new life of SLOW

Drawing on her knowledge and experience as a Natural Medicines therapist, she seeks out therapies to aid her healing and integrates a variety of self help techniques and lifestyle changes. She also unearths a love of solo travel including Egypt, India, Rome, Lourdes, Carcassonne and Bali…

Brigid learns many insights about LIFE on her journey, the most valuable being: “First learn to love thyself.”

In 2006, she began a new career in Organic Horticulture eventually teaching part time in schools. Although she has now retired from teaching, she continues to pursue her lifelong passion for gardening and watching the daisies.

One of the recent reviews for the book

Robert Fear 5.0 out of 5 stars 5* Absorbing Read 11 September 2018

I finished this absorbing read in two sessions.

Brigid Gallagher’s memoir is a well-written book, full of beautiful descriptions, and tells of a life full of trials and tribulations. These include the childhood tragedy of losing her mum and the untimely deaths of her dad along with other family members in later life. She also experiences serious health struggles and learns how important it is to slow down.

The author’s travels in Egypt, India, Rome, Lourdes and Bali were of special interest. I also enjoyed her descriptions of the many homes she lived in and the way they represented different phases of her life. In addition, I felt a close affinity through her love of cats and the way they played an integral part in her life.

There were many other things I learned that I knew little about. The book shed a new light on areas such as auras, spiritual healing, crystal therapy, colour therapy, reflexology and aromatherapy. These played an important part in the author’s life development and working career.

Born in the same year as me, I found it interesting to read how her life progressed compared with mine. There are lessons on life and coping mechanisms she has learned to use I now want to apply to my life. I was left with a sense of positivity when I finished reading her story.

Thank you for sharing your life with us Brigid Gallagher. Many of us will learn that key lesson of the ‘Importance of Slow’.

The next author who also shares her inspiring story of overcoming ovarian cancer is Karen Ingalls with a memoir that shares not just the struggle to survive, but the hope for those who have received this devastating diagnosis Outshine: An Ovarian Cancer Memoir

About the book

When Karen Ingalls was diagnosed with Stage IIC ovarian cancer, she realized how little she knew about what is called “the silent killer.” As Ingalls began to educate herself she felt overwhelmed by the prevalent negativity of cancer. Lost in the information about drugs, side effects, and statistics, she redirected her energy to focus on the equally overwhelming blessings of life, learning to rejoice in each day and find peace in spirituality.

In this memoir, Karen is a calming presence and positive companion, offering a refreshing perspective of hope with the knowledge that “the beauty of the soul, the real me and the real you, outshines the effects of cancer, chemotherapy, and radian. It is a story of survival and reminds readers that disease is not an absolute, but a challenge to recover.

One of the recent reviews for Outshine: An Ovarian Cancer Memoir

As a 2x cancer survivor myself, I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend this book. The author provides an honest, personal, and inspiring account of her battle with ovarian cancer that includes heartfelt insights into the emotional side of dealing with a potentially deadly disease. From diagnosis through surgery and chemotherapy to recovery and remission, Mrs. Ingalls’ journey can bring hope and inspiration to anyone who is battling the disease or knows someone who is. The feelings experienced by cancer patients tend to be unique and it’s important for caregivers, family, and friends to understand this emotional rollercoaster so they can provide the love and support the patient needs.

Mrs. Ingalls’ positive attitude, spiritual development and quest along the way, as well as her employment of general health measures, undoubtedly had a bearing on her successful recovery. She sets a beautiful example of a survivor, someone with much to live for and the benefits of a proactive approach to conquering what can be a deadly affliction. I suspect that her attitude was paramount to her recovery and can provide an inspiring example to others.

She ends each chapter with an uplifting thought and also includes a wealth of information in the appendix of cancer symptoms to watch for and various resources. Highly recommended for cancer patients and their loved ones.

The effect of abuse of any nature in childhood is devastating, and can leave scars that last a lifetime. It can be extremely difficult to talk about and it is why memoirs that share experiences but also the transformation into a better life are so important. Chuck Jackson shares his childhood in his memoir What Did I Do?

About What Did I Do?

What Did I Do?  is Chuck Jackson’s true recollection of the abuse he received from both his parents. It is a story where he spent years struggling to please them without succeeding. It is a story where they told him he was irredeemable and unworthy of being their son. When he saw love and happiness in other families, he wondered why not his.

Chuck came out of the darkness to expound on the stigma attached to child abuse. He admitted to the affects of shame, anger, guilt, and depression that he and so many experience. He tells the story of survival where he felt invisible. Follow him where he sought a warm touch and a kind word of praise. Follow his desperation for love from anyone. Follow Chuck’s story and help answer his question, What Did I Do?

A recent review for the book

Jackson takes us back in time into his childhood where he was adopted by his parents at 14 months old. Where one would think adoptive parents would feel so blessed to have a child, this story isn’t one of them. The author opens his heart in his telling without whining or complaining of what he endured, but instead questions – What Did I Do? As we learn about the emotional neglect he suffered along with the physical attacks from his father, the author steals our heart and has us wanting to reach out and just hug the boy.

We get a good look at emotionally bankrupt parents who carry their own demons, which gives us a hint at how they project their own unhappiness in their lives on to poor Bobby (author’ name in the book). This void of love Bobby exists in doesn’t sour his desire to want his parents to love and appreciate him, but rather, disturbs him through life as to why they couldn’t give him any affection. Eventually, Bobby runs away from home with fears that the beatings won’t stop despite the apologies that sometimes come after a consequent attack.

The story gives us insight into not only what the child had to live with growing up and into adulthood, but has us shaking our heads at what on earth went wrong in his parents’ life to make them so self-absorbed and uncaring.

I would highly recommend this book to parents to have a look at what abuse can do to a child through Jackson’s eyes and words, as well as for anyone who has been abused to be inspired by how Jackson handled his life and still came out as a compassionate good person without falling victim to his upbringing and continuing the trend of abuse. #Recommended

And last but not least is one of the memoirs by D.G. Kaye which shows the way to forgiveness for those who have found it so difficult to cherish a child and can only inflict pain. P.S. I Forgive you: Broken Legacy

About P.S. I Forgive You

Confronted with resurfacing feelings of guilt, D.G. Kaye is tormented by her decision to remain estranged from her dying emotionally abusive mother after resolving to banish her years ago, an event she has shared in her book Conflicted Hearts. In P.S. I Forgive You, Kaye takes us on a compelling heartfelt journey as she seeks to understand the roots of her mother’s narcissism, let go of past hurts, and find forgiveness for both her mother and herself.

After struggling for decades to break free, Kaye has severed the unhealthy ties that bound her to her dominating mother—but now Kaye battles new confliction, as the guilt she harbors over her decision only increases as the end of her mother’s life draws near. Kaye once again struggles with her conscience and her feelings of being obligated to return to a painful past she thought she left behind.

One of the reviews for the book

This powerful memoir by DG Kaye speaks of a childhood wounded by her narcissistic mother, a woman whose “empire crumbled” when family and friends and acquaintances began to see her for what she truly was and abandoned their relationships with her.

The author’s painful journey through emotional and spiritual anguish is laid out for the readers in an artful, honest, reflective manner. Too many years spent beholden to a woman unable to be generous, kind, loving, or selfless. At the center of this story is courage, a need to find self-love and forgiveness despite the hurts inflicted upon her by the one person who naturally should have been her biggest and loudest cheerleader.

Kaye’s story is well-written and poignant. She unravels the ball of pain nestled deep inside her, describing emotionally traumatic events that shaped her life and her relationships. But woven right along with this story of anguish is her search for forgiveness, understanding, and personal growth.

P. S. I Forgive You is a tremendously moving story of the author’s struggle to overcome a domineering mother so that she can pursue a life of art, healthy relationships, and self-respect. Anyone who has cowered in the dark shadows of manipulation and egotism will find inspiration among these pages.

One of the recent reviews for the book

I began following a blog entitled Watching the Daisies earlier this year shared by Brigid P. Gallagher and discovered she’d also written a book, Watching the Daisies: Life Lessons on the Importance of Slow a few years ago. I purchased Ms. Gallagher’s holistic memoir last month and dropped it into my reading queue this week. It came at a great time and helped provide a few clear reminders we should all remember when things get too complex or tough.

Life can be difficult, especially when we encounter illness, pain, and death. It can also be wonderful when we meet new friends, fall in love, or share our days with family. Ms. Gallagher covers it all in this ~50 year memoir of many key events that occurred in her life. One of the biggest impacts I felt from reading her personal insights and history is an acute awareness of how lucky many of us are to have little to no physical pain or be raised by two loving parents who hadn’t died young. The author spent lots of time in hospitals, surgeries and doctors trying to diagnose symptoms that ultimately took a rather long time to discover. Along the path, Gallagher shares her home remedies for dealing with the pain, both mental and physical, as her career develops and she travels throughout the world studying and learning about different medicines, approaches and healing powers. I enjoyed reading about the path she took and felt sadness and happiness with each of her own ups and downs.

From losing family members she loved, to moving back and forth from Ireland and Scotland, to adopting and saying goodbye to many pets, Gallagher shares all the occasions in life that help craft who we are as people. We can face our obstacles with our head held high or sneak away letting no one help us. Gallagher teaches us about medicinal, herbal and other holistic healing options, teases us with trips we want to take in the future, and offers ideas to explore in our own lives on how to be happier and healthier. I next saw the bravery in this woman for not only living through many of the ordeals she’s experienced but in sharing them with readers like me who may have little or no knowledge about the difficulties of a disease or the unknown forces impacting our bodies.

The book is an easy-read with memoir moments, teaching opportunities, and whimsical thoughts. Some hit home for me, others were just a laugh or a nod of my head in acknowledgement of what the author’s been through. In the end, it’s the kind of book where you have a few hours to breathe the same air as someone else, learning how she would deal with all the curves and fun being thrown at her. Stepping out of my own shows is always a good thing as it helps provide perspective and alternative opinions and ideas. Kudos to Gallagher for sharing such a wonderful life journey with us… I can only hope she’ll share the second half of her life sometime in the future as it sounds like she’s got a lot more planned as accomplishments.

The next author with his short story collection Glimpses on offer is Hugh W. Roberts, on offer at .99p on UK – 99c (+tax) US.

About the collection

After publishing some of his short stories on his blog, Hugh W. Roberts, who is dyslexic, received numerous requests to publish his short stories in a book.

Here, at last, are 28 short stories that will take your mind on a roller coaster of a ride into worlds that conceal unexpected twists and turns.

‘Glimpses’ allows the reader a peek into the lives of everyday people who are about to have life lead them on an unpredicted path. From a mysterious deadly iPad app to a hole in the fence that is not all it seems, to a strange lipstick that appears to have a life of its own, you will encounter terror, laughter, sadness, shock and many other emotions on journeys which promise a thrilling and gripping climax.

If you are a lover of shows such as ‘The Twilight Zone’ and ‘Tales Of The Unexpected’, then you are in for a real treat with this first collection of short stories from Hugh.

Dare you take a glimpse into the lives of these unsuspecting characters?

One of the reviews for the collection

I found Glimpses by Hugh W. Roberts to be quite a unique book. It is a collection of short stories, mainly written along a supernatural theme. I am a great lover of supernatural and horror books and have been avidly reading Stephen King since I was ten years old, so this was right up my street. I had two absolute favourite stories/groupings of stories in this lovely book. My outright favourite was The Truth App which I read twice. It is a collection of a few short stories all in the same theme and it really “creeped” me out. Maybe I identified with it so much because it is all about blogging and bloggers which is a world in which I have recently become very immersed. I must say that I had to stop reading this tale in the evenings because it was giving me bad dreams. My advice to bloggers and other readers of this book, be careful what apps you choose to download!

My other outright winner was a short story about a woman who goes to India to have eye and dental treatment. This one stayed firmly in my mind because it made me reflect on the fact that, even if you read the completely incomprehensible list of ingredients on cosmetic and facial and other products, one rarely has any idea of what really goes into that cream that you are liberally apply all over your face. It also summoned up horrible thoughts of articles that I have read recently about testing medications and products on animals. A story that can make you think like that has got to be superb.

The next author with a book on offer for all of you who enjoy a psychological thriller, is Jacquie Biggar with The Beast Within: Mended Souls Book Two: on offer at .99p on UK – 99c (+tax) US.

About the book

It’s a psychological thriller with paranormal elements that continues the story of newly-minted angels Mike and Lucas.
N.N. Light

The twists and turns in this story are amazing. Just when you think you know where the adventure is going, it switches to the unexpected. Definitely kept me entertained and on my toes!
Jacqui Nelson

She didn’t expect to land in the crosshairs of a serial killer.

When Julie Crenshaw is offered a news reporter’s job on beautiful Vancouver Island she didn’t expect to land in the crosshairs of a serial killer.
Connor O’Rourke has seen his share of human depravities during his fourteen years as a homicide detective, but is still sickened by the murderer terrorizing his island shores.
And threatening his key witness.
As the stakes rise, can two people get a second chance at love?
Or will a killer become the winner?

THE BEAST WITHIN by Jacquie Biggar did not disappoint! These books are a great blend of contemporary romance with added suspense and the paranormal element of guardian angels that have ties to the main characters.
Avonna

From USA Today Bestselling Author Jacquie Biggar, Can two displaced angels save a woman from the clutches of a vicious psychopath?

A recent review for the book

This is the first of Ms. Biggar’s books that I have read. I can assure you it won’t be the last. Right away we get into the story where a TV news person (Julie Crenshaw) finds a severed foot still in a jogging shoe. While out walking. Instead of an annoying “let’s get to the bottom of this crime,” story we find ourselves involved in a story where we learn Julie’s husband and unborn daughter were victims in a fatal accident with a drunk film star. If that is not enough drama, we also learn that the Lord has dictated that Julie’s husband Mike and the drunk actor Lucas must become angels and form a bond to help get over the hatred they have for each other.

So, does the story get easier? Not at all. There is also a serial killer on the loose and has Julie lined up as his next victim. For you romantics, there is also a love story in the making. Julie has fallen for the police detective investigating the serial killer. His name is Connor O’Rourke, and he has fallen for her. Unfortunately for the two of them, Julie’s angel husband keeps watch and gives Connor some bad feelings at times.

So, to sum it up. If you like your thrillers with twists. Romance stories with pizazz. Paranormal stories with unusual characters and situations you’ll love this book. I know I did.

Here is one of Victoria’s  books for children – Home Squeak Home.

About the book

Moving to a new home can be a scary experience; especially if you’re very small. That’s how it is for Sooty and Scamp; a pair of gerbils chosen by a little boy named Matthew to be the ones to leave the pet shop and their other two brothers to go home with him.

Most people agree that getting a new pet is an exciting experience for any child; or adult, for that matter. But have you ever stopped to wonder how the pet feels during this time? This is the story of two little gerbils, and how they learned to adjust after a little boy took them home. The story is based on the behaviour of a pair of real gerbils, and events are shown from their point of view.

One of the reviews for the book from Goodreads

Jan 09, 2018 Robbie Cheadle Rated if Four Stars.

When Matthew’s mother takes him to the pet store to choose a pet he ends up leaving with two gerbils. The pet store assistance had told his mother that gerbils are very sociable animals and need company, so they had bought two. How wonderful.

Sooty and Scamp are a little sad to be leaving their two brothers, but they are excited to have a new, permanent home. What a home it turns out to be, so different from their old and very plain cage in the pet store.

Home Squeak Home is a lovely story for young children with a lovely subtle message about coping with change and a new environment

The most recent review for the book

on October 10, 2017

I had read Brigid’s blog for a while when I bought the book and was quite sure I would enjoy it. I was not disappointed, in fact to the contrary it surpassed my expectations. Her back story is poignant and clearly significantly impacted on the woman she grew to be. She tells the tale in a soft voice which gently steers you through her places. Lovely, lovely and with a heart full of love for those that she cares for. Her journey into healing and ultimately self-healing is fascinating. She does not shun traditional medicine but rather listens intently to the diagnoses whilst simultaneously drawing on her decades of learning many many alternative healing forms.

As a travalogue it is rich and varied with moments that echo Elizabeth Gilbert in ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ mode but her voice is a different voice. I highly recommend this book. I was drawn to buy it for my sister-in-law who suffers with fibromyalgia and the book is now with her. I know she will find much of the practical advice helpful. I know too that the spiritual journey will resonate softly with her. As the whole book did with me.

One of the most recent reviews for the book

Heartwarming Contemporary Romance on September 15, 2017

HOLD ‘EM: A GAMBLING HEARTS ROMANCE by Jacquie Biggar is a contemporary romance that has a cast of characters that are heartwarming, caring, funny and just all around wonderful! The hero and heroine find they have an instant attraction and even though they are opposites, they both have caring hearts and strong family attachments.
Matthew “Matt” Shaughnessy is a high-stakes poker player winning his way up to the World Series of Poker. Just when he thinks he may have lost a huge stakes game, his opponent cannot cover his makers. What Matt needs is a fiancée to make his dying grandmother happy so a deal is struck. Gardner offers in payment his daughter’s heirloom wedding ring and one week of Cassandra playing his fiancée on his family’s Texas ranch.

Cassandra Gardner knows her father has a gambling problem, but she never imagined it would lead to her playing the part of a finance on a ranch with a stranger, when she is supposed to be getting married in two weeks in Las Vegas to someone else. She is a city girl through and through and knows nothing about ranching or the great outdoors. She also has very strong feelings against lying to Matt’s grandmother, family and friends who accept her on sight.

Matt has one week to convince his grandmother he is settling down and found the love of his life, which if he keeps enjoying Cassandra’s looks and spirit may be true in reality, but can he keep her on the ranch? Cassandra cannot believe the intense feelings that started as annoyance and now are so much more for this cowboy, but she has a fiancée waiting in Vegas.

Ms. Biggar has written an easy to read, heartwarming, sexy and funny, opposites attract hero and heroine that could walk right off the page and into your heart. There is sexual tension throughout, but Cassandra never breaks her promise to her real fiancée and there is no sex in the story. Matt’s grandmother, brother and sister and his care of them all and the ranch at a young age shows the depth of his character, while they are all interesting characters on their own.

Right now this book is a standalone, but the story definitely is set up for Matt’s brother and sister to have their own stories in the future. I really hope they get them because this is a family that I want to check back in with in the future. Written for and posted first on The Romance Reviews.com.

Wonderful  on October 17, 2017

I loved this book and had difficulty putting it down. Family, marriage, career, sports, success, legal/political intrigue, and spirituality. This book has it all. The author had me wondering at the beginning if this was a true story, but I soon realized that it was not. Each character is wonderfully portrayed and quite believable. I was disappointed in Greg’s wife who changed so much from a young college student to an older, rich woman. I liked the part about the international plot in stealing money from Greg. I did not understand all the computer and technical part, but it did not take away from the storyline at all.
Wonderful, John. You are amazing.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore Author Update – Brigid P. Gallagher, Jacquie Biggar, Jaye Marie

Welcome to the first of the cafe and bookstore updates and the first author with some news is Brigid P. Gallagher with her book Watching the Daisies on 99c offer until Augusts 9th.

I didn’t know what to expect when I bought Brigid’s book. What I got though, was the author’s personal journey of discovery ; of places, of the mind and of the soul.

This book is written with remarkable openness and honesty, although the graphic detail of a miscarried pregnancy was a bit too much for my mere male sensibilities. Her drive to seek answers and cures spurred her on to knocking on doors and engaging fully in whatever field she entered.

She committed fully, whether it was complimentary medicine, mystical cultures or matters of Faith.

You could say that her journey was Holistic.

It wasn’t all study,though.

Along the way she had plenty of fun and enjoyment. Although she travelled alone, who travels light, travels quicker, she always seemed to meet up with kindred spirits, who embellished her travels.

Like every life journey, there is sadness and sometimes tragedy. Brigid had her share. It would be natural for someone with her outlook to feel close to nature and so it is with her, as her passion for horticulture testifies.

However, it occurred to me, at the end of the book, that she has found her spiritual home, like many others have, in the beauty of her beloved Donegal…the coolest place on Earth. (c) National Geographic.

A selection of books by Jacquie Biggar

One of the reviews for Hold ‘Em released in April 2017

on May 15, 2017

I have never read a book by this author but found it to be well written and it held my interest. Professional poker player Matt Shaughnessy wins more than he expected when the one player did not have the means to totally pay up. This player a Canadian diplomat was short the wagered amount, he dug into his jacket pocket and pulled out a diamond ring. Asking Matt if he will accept this as a token? It was a beautiful ring and it was in the family for generations and was for his daughter who was to be getting married soon.

Matt lives in Texas and comes from a good Texas ranch family. His grandmother is dying and her wish is before she dies to see her grandson with a good woman, about to marry.
Gardener from Canada, was feeling like he won and he was about to pull the winnings his way before Matt had a chance to lay down his hand.

Cassandra was Gardener’s daughter and they had just settled on her becoming Matt’s fiancée for a week. To come back to Texas with him, meet the grandma and pretend to be in love with Matt. This was to pay off her fathers $250,000 gambling debt.

Cassandra stepped up to the plate in doing what needed to be done to settle what her father had gotten her into. She would be living in the next room from Matt, with a Jack and Jill bathroom separating them. She had to encounter the whole Shaughnessy family and ranch hands, learning to ride a horse, etc.

You could tell that Matt and his grandmother Madeline had a wonderful strong bond. Madeline firmly believed that Cassandra was the girl that she had dreamt about for Matt.
I hope to be able to read more from this author.

A review for A Ninth Life

Suspenseful Story  on January 29, 2015

Kate is an artist who’s had a very painful life and a few close calls with death. After a heart attack, Kate tries to go on with her life, however trouble lurks in the form of her vindictive ex-husband. One by one Kate’s friends and loved ones meet mysterious deaths and Kate, fearing she’s next runs for her life.
Adding to Kate’s dilemma is a the mysterious voice that’s been plaguing her her entire life, which at times proves to be more of a nuisance than of help.

At times Kate comes across as standoffish, but after reading about her history and the tragedies she suffered in the past, gives you a better understanding for her attitude. After reading about her past, I was wishing she’d find the peace that she wanted.

The story is very mysterious and suspenseful, and I was left wondering if Kate would escape the murderer. The mysterious voice plays a big part in the story and the ending does a wonderful job of explaining the voice and it’s purpose in Kate’s life.

One of my flaws with the story is there were some scenes in the final chapters that I felt could’ve been expanded on. For instance, it would’ve helped if there was a little more buildup before Kate has a showdown with the murderer.

Smorgasbord Book Promotion – Air Your Reviews – Sarah Brentyn, Brigid P. Gallagher, Marcia Meara

Welcome to another post where you can share the news of your latest reviews. Our first author is Sarah Brentyn with a great review for her collection of short fiction Hinting at Shadows

About Hinting at Shadows

No One Escapes Life Unscathed

Delve into the deeper reaches of the human condition and the darkness that lives there.A girl haunted by her sister’s drowning. A boy desperate for his father’s affection. A woman forced to make a devastating decision. A man trapped by his obsessions.

Experience tales of love, loss, murder, and madness through this collection of flash and micro fiction.Take a peek behind the smile of a stranger. Get a glimpse inside the heart of a friend. Scratch the surface and discover what is hidden beneath.

These stories will open your mind, tug at your thoughts, and allow you to explore the possibility that, even in the brightest moments, something is Hinting at Shadows.

The most recent review for the book

Sarah Brentyn is a master at micro-fiction. Her stories written in short 100 words or less don’t require more words, but leave us in deep contemplation. The power of words in small micro-bursts have the ability to reveal a whole story open to the reader’s interpretation.

All Brentyn’s stories reveal a human element reflecting many emotions from fear, abuse, trust, passion, hope and more.

Just a sampling here will demonstrate that although short, this book will give a reader reason to pause and digest these bite-sized chunks of life:

‘They said, “if you talk about it, it will set you free.” She told them. They locked her up.’

“Eventually we learned that his rage was preferable when he lashed out. His silence meant a storm grew within him. And we would pay.”

‘The doctors say insomnia and prescription pills. I say “writer” and pick up a pen.’

Hinting at Shadows is a wonderful, thought-provoking, psychological read about the human condition.

Now time for a recent review for the poetry collection, Summer Magic by Marcia Meara.

About Summer Magic

Summer Magic: Poems of Life & Love is a collection of contemporary poetry about exactly that–life and love. The first part of the book features poems about the magic a young boy discovers while camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The second part of the book has a sampling of poetry about love, life and death, autumn, and dreams coming true.

A recent review for the collection

After having read all Marcia Meara’s books and loved them all, and am patiently waiting for more in near future, I have decided to purchase Poems of Life and Love. Again I was not disappointed. Marcia is a master at getting your feelings of love and appreciation of life’s joys, and frailties sorted out. So many memories are awakened. I did not think poetry would be that interesting to me. I look forward to more.
