Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – Author Update – #Reviews…Brigid P. Gallagher, James J. Cudney, Diana J. Febry and Ted Halstead

Welcome to the first of the Cafe updates this week

The first review is for the memoir by  Brigid P. Gallagher that shares her experiences and also strategies to overcome chronic illness in Watching for the Daisies.

About the book

Millions of people around the world suffer from fibromyalgia; the majority of them are women. As yet, there is no cure.

In this memoir, Brigid P. Gallagher shares her experiences on:

  • The busy life she followed before succumbing to this debilitating disease
  • Stopping and soul searching for answers to her vast array of symptoms
  • Entering a new life of SLOW

Drawing on her knowledge and experience as a Natural Medicines therapist, she seeks out therapies to aid her healing and integrates a variety of self help techniques and lifestyle changes. She also unearths a love of solo travel including Egypt, India, Rome, Lourdes, Carcassonne and Bali…

Brigid learns many insights about LIFE on her journey, the most valuable being: “First learn to love thyself.”

In 2006, she began a new career in Organic Horticulture eventually teaching part time in schools. Although she has now retired from teaching, she continues to pursue her lifelong passion for gardening and watching the daisies.

One of the recent reviews for the book

Watching the Daisies is a memoir with a difference. It commences in the seventies then follows Brigid’s journey of discovery into alternative medicine and a philosophy of life she had developed. When reading this book, I felt the calm and soothing effect if the author’s voice and loved the wisdom she has learned throughout her life.

Before reading this book, I was unfamiliar with the range of therapies and now feel as if I have been introduced to a new wisdom of complementary medicine that enhances wellbeing. There is information about reflexology, aromatherapy, crystal healing. Colour healing radionics, spiritual healing, meditation, geopathic stress, space clearing, counselling, Feng Shui and more. I enjoyed learning how the author had used the therapies with patients and in her own life. New therapies and ancient wisdom are combined in the memoir.

The memoir examines how one can use the energy from the ebb and flow of life to move forwards and cope with life. Brigid is a natural medicine pioneer and demonstrates how we can use alternative and traditional medicine, but the key is to ask questions about one’s health and explore options for healing.

Serenity and kindness dominate the narrative voice thus making me feel as if I was in the safe hands of the author. This was a great book to soothe the soul at the end of the day. Brigid demonstrates ‘the healing journey may be slow, but there are nuggets of gold on every corner.’ The book did make me slow down and reflect and I now understand the title.

The next author with recent reviews for his latest release James J. Cudney for the third book in the Braxton Campus Mysteries Flower Power Trip.

About the book

At a masquerade ball to raise money for renovations to Memorial Library, Kellan finds a dead body dressed in a Dr. Evil costume.

Did one of Maggie’s sisters kill the annoying guest who’d been staying at the Roarke and Daughters Inn, or does the victim have a closer connection to someone else at Braxton College?

As Kellan helps school president Ursula bury a secret from her past and discover the identity of her stalker, he unexpectedly encounters a missing member of his family. Everything seems to trace back to the Stoddards: a new family who recently moved in.

Between the murder, a special flower exhibit and strange postcards arriving each week, Kellan can’t decide which mystery in his life should take priority. But unfortunately, the biggest one of all has yet to be exposed – and when it is, Kellan won’t know what hit him.

One of the recent reviews for the book

ShrykespeareTop Contributor: Action Figures 5.0 out of 5 stars A mystery series worthy of your time May 8, 2019

I can’t get over just how complex and multi-layered James Cudney makes his mysteries. There’s so much going on, with multiple subplots and a myriad of colorful characters filling the pages; and yet, I never had trouble following the progression of events.

Once again, Kellen Aywrick is called upon to solve a murder when a man is murdered at a costume party. It turns out the man was not who he claimed to be, and in order to keep one of his good friends from taking the fall, Kellen must use all his sleuth skills to suss out the guilty party.

The rich tapestry of the setting, populating by such rich characters as Kellen’s six-year-old daughter Emma and his irrepressible grandmother Nana D, are what breathe life into Cudney’s stories, and Flower Power Trip is no exception.

Time now to share the recent review for Diana J. Febry and her first book in her DCI Peter Hatherall Mysteries – The Skeletons of Birkbury

About the book

When the body of a teenage girl is discovered in Birkbury, the villagers close ranks. Gossip turns to fear and suspicion as they realize the killer is one of them and is prepared to kill again.

DCI Peter Hatherall must fight his past and class divisions to find the killer.
All must decide which secrets are worth dying for.

One of the recent reviews for The Skeletons of Birkbury

Mar 23, 2019 Book Squirrel rated it Five Stars

A very good mystery read.

One of the biggest mistakes a person can make is to believe that the events of the past will remain there.

There are plenty of people in this book who are dealing with the ghosts and skeletons of the past, some with powerful and tragic consequences.

The Skeletons of Birkbury is a very enjoyable and well-constructed mystery story, set in a seemingly normal English village populated by believable characters, most of whom seem quite likeable and all of whom seek to keep up appearances of respectability.

Whose ghostly chickens are about to come home to roost? And which members of the community will fail to get out of the way as they do?

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – Author Update – #Reviews #offers – Joy Lennick, Olga Nunez Miret, Diana J. Febry and Richard Dee

Welcome to Friday’s edition of the Cafe and Bookstore update with recent reviews and news from some of the talented authors on the shelves.

The first author with a recent review is frequent contributor to the blog Joy Lennick and her husband Eric… for their humorous take on life. The Moon is Wearing a Tutu.

About the collection.

A little book, full of jokes, Limericks, poems, short stories and one-liners, from husband and wife team, Joy and Eric Lennick. Both authors in their own “write”, they have collaborated to bring you this fun read.

A recent review for the collection

This book comprises of a number of unusual poems that certainly force you to think deeply by Joy Lennick and a few poems, limericks and humorous one-liner jokes by Eric Lennick. There are also two, clever 50-word short stories by Jean Wilson. While the entire book was entertaining to read, I really enjoyed some of Joy’s wickedly humorous poems. She uses her words like little knives to cut into the body of a matter and expose its beating heart in a manner that is humorous but sharply to the point. The one that I related to the most was Think Outside the Box:

“I think out of the box
and why not?
(Are you wary your copybook you’ll blot?!)
I’m fed up with sheep
who seem half asleep
individuals they certainly are not.
To say “aab” not “baa”
is OK.
For a change why not try it today!
The fox you could fox –
confusing his “box,”
just say “aab” and get clean away.”

The next author to receive a glowing review is Olga Nunez Miret for her book 20 things I’ve Learned from my Patients: A psychiatrist’s pearls of wisdom to help you thrive.

About the book. Bilingual edition (English-Spanish). Edición versión bilingüe (inglés-español)

Over the years that I have worked as a psychiatrist, writer, and blogger, I’ve collected common-sense advice and thoughts that I have passed on and shared with many (patients, friends, and readers). As people don’t have much time to read and enjoy images and quotes, I decided to publish twenty of the things I have learned over the years, illustrating each one of them with a picture and a quote. And as I know many people who want to improve their Spanish but don’t dare to take on a long book, I decided to publish it as a bilingual edition, English-Spanish. I don’t claim to have found the meaning of life, but I hope you enjoy this little book.

One of the recent reviews for 20 Things I’ve learned from my patients on Goodreads

Mar 05, 2019 D.G. Kaye rated it it was amazing

A wonderful little book filled with inspiration with quotes to live by on laughter, self-love and so much more. Olga Nunez Miret has compiled a beautiful summation on some of life’s situations taken from the wisdom she accrued from her patients as a practicing psychiatrist. The author shares nuggets of wisdom in short poignant messages with lovely illustrations, sharing reflections on life. A handy little guide for life we can pick up and read again whenever we could use a dose of inspiration. This book is bilingual – written in both English and Spanish – a clever idea, giving us a nice little Spanish lesson if we’d like to learn a few words in a different language. #Recommended!

Time now to share the recent review for Diana J. Febry and her first book in her DCI Peter Hatherall Mysteries – The Skeletons of Birkbury which is on offer at 99c/99p until March 21st.

About the book

When the body of a teenage girl is discovered in Birkbury, the villagers close ranks. Gossip turns to fear and suspicion as they realize the killer is one of them and is prepared to kill again.

One of the recent reviews for The Skeletons of Birkbury on Goodreads

Jan 07, 2019 J.J. Hughes rated it Five Stars

The Skeletons of Birkbury is the story of a twenty-year-old mystery in the English countryside. During a storm, a tree blows over on a horse farm, revealing the hidden body, of a young woman, buried there. The subsequent police investigation takes the reader to the inside of an English country village. The characters are many and varied, from the; toffee-nosed land-owners to the hard-working labourers. All the characters have a special fell that is both fascinating and quirky. I think the author’s characterisation is what makes this story stand out. Despite the odd-ball set it is easy to empathise and find common ground with each of her characters.

This is a murder/police mystery that hooked me from the beginning and I think I was as keen to get to the bottom of it as were the main characters. Peter and Fiona. It’s perhaps a bit of a cliché but this was one mystery I couldn’t put down until I’d solved it and was sure I’d solved it correctly. If you like quintessentially English detective novels, you’ll love this one. A great read, for sure.

And the final author today with a recent review is Richard Dee for his latest release Life and Other Dreams.About the book

“Sci-Fi and psychological thriller fans are in for a treat.”
“…action, adventure, romance and cerebral high-jinks…”

Rick lives here on Earth now, with Cath. His life is boring, writing adverts for cat food and exotic holidays. When he’s asleep, he dreams vividly.

In his dreams, he lives as Dan, spending his time with his wife Vanessa. They live six-hundred years in the future, half a galaxy away. They’re explorers, searching for valuable minerals on Ecias, an alien paradise.

Dan has no dreams about Rick’s life, he lives on Ecias, loves his life and Vanessa.
When the two worlds overlap, Rick starts to question what is real. Events in his waking and sleeping lives are mirrored, similar people inhabit both and coincidences mount up.

Then disaster strikes in each world at the same time. In his dreams, Dan is accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Meanwhile, after one coincidence too many, Cath thinks that Rick’s dreams are hiding an affair and leaves him.

Is Rick going crazy, or can he be living in two places, in two times, at once? If not, then which one of them is the reality? Will one life carry on when the other is on hold?
Richard Dee’s fast-paced, edgy science fiction -cum- psychological thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page!

One of the recent reviews for the book

I received an advance copy of this book from the author and this is my honest opinion. This tale doesn’t simply belong in a book, it would be perfect as a movie. The mundane matter-of-fact snippets of two daily lives seem simple at first glance. But, if you pay attention to the fantastic fauna and flora (and technology) of Ecias – I feel that this new world is something I’d love to explore. Preferably on the big screen. The psychological twists and turns are also fascinating; I could not stop reading until the very last page. Definitely a keeper in my collection.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore- Buy a Book for Christmas #Mystery Series – Mary Anne Edwards, Diana J. Febry, Judy Penz Sheluk and Toni Pike

Time for some more book gift ideas from the Cafe and Bookstore and here is a selection of novels that any book lover would enjoy. As always when there is a series I will share book one and that is the case for the first author Mary Anne Edwards and The Charlie McLung Mysteries... Here is the first book in the series – Brilliant Disguise.

About the book

Are you sure you could tell the difference between murder and suicide?

Having had more than enough of the big city, Detective Charlie McClung moves to a small town looking for a simpler life. Turns out his first case is the most complicated of his career.

A young woman is found shot and while everyone is telling him suicide, his gut, and the dead woman’s beautiful neighbor, are telling him something quite different.

How far can he dig before he uncovers secrets never meant to be unearthed? Throw in a shady police chief and an unexpected love interest and McClung quickly finds himself with more trouble than he ever imagined.

One of the 100 reviews for the book

This story has it all. Murder, mystery, crime, drama, love and a great whodunit. I absolutely love reading a great whodunit and Mary Anne has achieved that in this book. This is a clean murder mystery with romance. I enjoyed reading about the main characters Charlie and Marian. They are characters both in their 40s. Charlie is a big city detective that moves to a small Georgia town to find solace and relax. There he meets Marian. Marian is a widow. Charlie investigates the death of Marian’s neighbor which looks to be apparent suicide. I loved this cozy mystery. I read it all in one evening.

This story was so intriguing. I couldn’t stop reading. This is a must read. Mary Anne did a great job keeping me guessing. This book contained twists and turns, suspense and kept me wanting to read until I was finished. It was refreshing to read a book that I could relate to. I loved watching Moonlighting, Remington Steele and Scarecrow and Mrs. King. This story reminded me of those TV programs. I’m a huge mystery buff. I laughed, was puzzled, cheered on Charlie and Marian and can’t wait to read the next book in this series. If you enjoy a good whodunit, mystery, suspense, touch of romance, clean read, you’ll absolutely love this mystery. Kudos to Mary Anne and her brilliant storytelling!

A recent review for the book

A good mystery  on 20 September 2018

The novel is a cold case detective story focusing on a dead girl who vanished twenty years earlier. This lends the story a slower pace than if it had been a recent murder, but that’s okay. In the small, slightly suffocating, rural community, we have plenty of suspects, and you’ll take against one or two right from the off. We certainly get a lot of detail about each character, possibly to make them all seem important (and therefore worthy of our suspicion), and we hop between points of view, even within a scene. The detectives work well together, although their off-topic back stories occasionally took centre stage, which may not suit an impatient mystery fan. All in all, a good mystery that keeps you guessing until the end.

The next author with books in a series is Judy Penz Sheluk and here is book one of The Marketville Mysteries – Skeletons in the Attic. Some of the books have been re-released with new covers.

About the book

Calamity (Callie) Barnstable isn’t surprised to learn she’s the sole beneficiary of her late father’s estate, though she is shocked to discover she has inherited a house in the town of Marketville—a house she didn’t know he had. However, there are conditions attached to Callie’s inheritance: she must move to Marketville, live in the house, and solve her mother’s murder.

Callie’s not keen on dredging up a thirty-year-old mystery, but if she doesn’t do it, there’s a scheming psychic named Misty Rivers who hopes to expose the Barnstable family secrets herself. Determined to thwart Misty and fulfill her father’s wishes, Callie accepts the challenge. But is she ready to face the skeletons hidden in the attic?

One of the reviews for the book

As an (ignorant) American, I hadn’t realized that Canada had tried the Prohibition experiment too, and earlier than the U.S. Just a throwaway comment grousing about the government-run liquor stores made me take a second to check Wikipedia. That this well-written tale of a missing mother made me think and learn beyond following the clues was my own first clue that this was going to be an extra-enjoyable read–or, listen, in this case, as I allowed narrator Claira Jordyn to read aloud while I enjoyed breakfast and other otherwise non-brain activities. Intriguing premise, logical clue-following research (including hours in the library), and a surprise ending.

A robed man is pushed from the bell tower of the church at midnight and Jotham becomes the prime suspect. His lover Antonella, an expert on ancient documents, has a shocking secret. Rumours fly about a papyrus scroll. A ruthless Catholic Brotherhood will stop at nothing in their hunt for a hidden sect. And a reclusive billionaire has the chance of a lifetime to get his revenge.

Book 2: THE ROCK OF MAGUS – Code Red in the Vatican
Book 3: THE MAGUS EPIPHANY – Ancient treasures and a new revelation
Book 4: HOLY SPEAR OF MAGUS – The covenant will be fulfilled

One of the reviews for the book

Anglican Priest Jotham Fletcher is due to give a lecture about Simon Magnus at the church in Rome where Magnus died. Magnus was the leader of a religious cult that is thought to have vanished around 400 AD. When a mysterious robed man is found murdered at the church not long before the lecture, Jotham becomes the main suspect.

As rumours surface about a papyrus scroll mentioning Magnus, things get worse and more dead bodies start to appear. Jotham gets kidnapped and tortured and ends up on the run, a journey that takes him across Europe. Meanwhile his Lover Antonella might know more about what is going on than she admits.

It’s up to Jotham to fit the pieces of the puzzle together and find out what the Brotherhood, a religious order that will stop at nothing to protect their beliefs, has to do with it all? And did the Simonean Sect really cease to exist or are they somehow also involved? And can Iago Visser, the rich reclusive billionaire friend of Antonella, be trusted or does he have his own agenda?

This is a thoroughly enjoyable story full of action and adventure. The plot is well developed, gripping, fast-paced and suspenseful with unexpected twists and turns. The characters were interesting, not superhuman as in some action and adventure stories and all the more realistic because of it.

The book fits into the same genre as Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code” or “Angels and Demons”. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to read a good action and adventure novel.

Plagued by grief and determined to prove he is alive, she has sacrificed her business, her reputation, and her hope. Surviving on the streets of Gaia, she has become an emotional husk of her former self. It is only by chance that Kira crosses paths with an old friend and learns of a path, which will either end her suffering or revive her shattered soul. A selection of the most recent books by Charles Yallowitz

One of the recent reviews for War of Nytefall

Nytefall is an interesting book. It’s set in the previously designed world of Windemere, but uses a different cast, and one that isn’t completely likeable. Clyde and his band are vampires. There is a certain amount of human destruction that’s given no more importance than a different character eating a jelly doughnut.

I understand why the author did this. I suppose a vampire would look at humans as nothing more than food, but among real humans some people feel remorse for farm animals.

After the Great Cataclysm, Clyde is changed into something new. He is much more powerful than others of his kind. He is stripped of any magic he had, but is given new powers that don’t rely upon incantations and such. It reminded me a bit of some games where a character earns a skin that gives them an edge. Only Clyde’s edge is much bigger than that.

He reunites his old group and tries to go on with his old life. I’ll stop here to avoid spoiling the story. Nytefall explores prejudice from a new angle, that of jealousy and fear over the rise of the Dawn Fangs. This is for you if you enjoy extensive fantasy worlds, don’t mind a bit of casual murder, and can cheer for the underdog even if he isn’t a hero.

The next author with a reduced offer for you is John W. Howell with the first of the John Cannon Trilogy – My GRL. It is on offer at 99c/99p just today until 11 PDT which is 7.00am tomorrow UK time.  Get it while you can..

About My GRL

John J. Cannon, a successful San Francisco lawyer, takes a leave of absence from the firm and buys a boat he names My GRL. John is unaware his boat has been targeted by a terrorist group to be used to destroy a symbol of America’s greatness. John’s first inkling of trouble is when he wakes up in the hospital and learns he was found unconscious next to the body of the young woman who sold him the boat in the first place. John now is the only one standing between the terrorists and the success of their mission. An excellent summer read

One of the many excellent reviews for the book

Full-Throttle Action on March 7, 2017

I often find work written in first person/present tense to be jarring. Overuse of “I” and “me” coupled with an awkward reveal of the POV character’s name and appearance usually work against an author’s intent and keep me from engaging in the story.

That’s not the case with John Howell’s MY GRL.

Mr. Howell penned a story that, while written in first person/present tense, actually sucked me into the story. I thought what main character John Cannon thought, I felt what he felt. Howell is to be commended for his ability to immerse the reader into his story world through his protagonist.

This thriller captured me not only for the reason listed above, but also because the author crafted a realistic hero. John Cannon isn’t the thirty-year-old alpha male, Navy Seal, superhero. He’s a regular guy, with realistic fears and logical fallacies. He’s so likable because he could be your uncle, your neighbor, your coworker. We all know John Cannons, and we all love them.

While I found this novel to be character-driven, there’s no shortage of action in the plot. This was a quick read because both the character was relatable and the pace was full-throttle.

This is book one of three in the series. I’ll be looking for the next installment and highly recommend this one.

A time tunnel, a pirate king, a lost city. In three separate adventures, Princelings Fred and George set out to solve trifling problems, and uncover dangerous and sometimes desperate foes, each with his or her own agenda, threatening the peace of the Realms.

The Princelings of the East: the saga starts with Fred and George leaving their cosy Castle in the Marsh. They encounter the mysterious cola vendor Hugo, the playboy Prince Lupin, and the over-worked innkeeper Victor, and have to use their own wits to decide who to trust, and how to prevent their ordered society descending into chaos.

The Princelings and the Pirates sees our heroes setting out to discover what has gone wrong at Castle Dimerie – a simple errand that ends in kidnap, shipwreck, and a battle in which no quarter is given.

The Princelings and the Lost City introduces George to the delights of flying, and Fred to the tortures of true love. Their inventions and experiments take a back seat as the puzzle of the Lost City and its all-female society lead to questions that may be too difficult to solve.

One of the reviews for the book

This reviews is adapted from a post which originally appeared on my blog, This Northern Gal. I was sent a copy of the text in exchange for an honest review.

The Curse of Time is all about Amelina, a teenage girl who receives a mysterious invitation. Her already crazy life takes a turn for the weird and unusual. She becomes fixated with the idea that there is a curse on her family and that she has to find a way to break it. Along the way she finds herself in a world that revels in the strange and mysterious. This world building was where M.J Mallon excelled. It allowed her to be wonderfully creative, which in turn meant that I was sucked into the world of The Curse of Time. I particularly enjoyed the way the writer seemed to be inspired by fairy-tales, though in quite a twisted way. From strange reflections in the mirror to vanishing black cats, there was a familiarity in the characters that was really welcoming. They were all presented in new and creative ways however.

This is particularly apparent in the character of Amelina, who is creative and artistic. This meant that her art and poetry were brilliantly woven throughout The Curse of Time. It added a good extra layer to the novel itself.

I also really enjoyed the way crystals were used throughout the text to make the world that Amelina inhabited. It would be interesting to see how this is expanded and sustained in the rest of the M. J Mallon’s writing, particularly in the sequel to The Curse of Time

The next author with a book reduced this month is Diana J. Febry with Bells on her Toes ( A DCI Peter Hatherall novel) at 99p/99c until July 21st.

About Bells on her Toes

Horse race trainer, Ben Halloway thought the murdered car mechanic found near his gallops was a minor annoyance that didn’t concern him.

That was his first mistake.

Turning his back on those he trusted was his final mistake.

All he wanted was to train a winner.

DCI Hatherall is led a merry dance around the starting gates. As potential witnesses disappear he is in a race against time to solve the case and protect the people he cares for.

One of the reviews for the book

I’ve been reading this series recently and have found all of the books real page-turners. This one, Bells on her Toes is particularly gritty and realistic. It starts off with an apparently straight forward drug-related execution murder, but what follows for DCI Peter Hatherall and his side kick Fiona embroils them in more twists and turns than a wriggling mamba.

There are red herrings galore and by the end, when the series of subsequent murders is eventually solved, the reader feels deeply sympathetic to Hatherall and Fiona for the frustrations and time wasting leads that somehow always distract them from the real clues. As in real life, protagonists die before they can explain their role, so in the end we still don’t know the reasons for all the incidents along the way, but that is real life. I found this an exceptionally compelling and unputdownable mystery. I just hope Diana Febry will write some more DCI Hatherall books so I can learn how the poor detective solves his personal problems, a running subplot in all the books that gives him a somewhat prickly character at times. It would be good to see Fiona happy too, so keep on writing Ms Febry!

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New on the Shelves -Twisted Truth (A Peter Hatherall Mystery) by Diana J. Febry

Time to welcome a new author to the bookstore with her selection of books. Diana J. Febry is the author of the Peter Hatherall mysteries and has recently published book Five…Twisted Truth

About Twisted Truth

It’s hard to defend yourself when you have memory lapses, and everyone thinks you are crazy.

Journalist, Megan Roach, is given a story by an old man in a nursing home that could make her famous. When her carefully constructed life starts to unravel, she is forced to confront her childhood demons and the possibility she could be a murderer.

DCI Peter Hatherall uncovers a conspiracy that confronts his own beliefs and goes far deeper than Megan Roach imagined. But can he believe anything she says?

One of the early reviews for the book:

Amazon Customer 5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly done! June 29, 2018

If you love a good English mystery, you must read Diana Febry’s books! She’s my go-to author whenever I feel like diving into a brain-storming session and try to figure out “who done it.” “Twisted Truth” is the newest installment in her Peter Hatherall series, and just like the previous books in the series, it was impossible to put down. A young journalist Megan Roach was dreaming of a good scoop that would propel her career to new heights. What she didn’t expect, however, was that the story which an elderly man handed her (together with a box containing supposed evidence) could not only cost Megan her career but endanger her life as well. As she starts digging deeper, strange things start to happen, and soon Megan starts questioning her very sanity…

The plot was dark and haunting, and the use of an unreliable protagonist technique was wonderfully executed. I admit I was wondering a few times if Megan was indeed simply paranoid and certain events were a mere fruit of her imagination. And of course, I got it all wrong in the end, suspecting a completely different motive from a completely different person. Brilliantly done! I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series!
