10 New Publishing Scams to Watch Out for in 2020 by Anne R. Allen
10 New Publishing Scams to Watch Out for in 2020

Lurking predators are always coming up with new publishing scams.

I read a quote recently from an indie author who said he felt sorry for new writers who fall for scammy vanity publishers — because they obviously have no writer friends to clue them in.

It is true that networking with other authors is the best way to stay safe from scammers in this business. You can usually get by with a little help from your friends.

Unfortunately, the latest batch of scams are calculated to turn friends’ faces and familiar names into weapons to use against you.

Here are some of the nasty ways they’re trying to con you.

Time to catch up with Mary Smith and her adventures in Afghanistan.. this time battles, hostages and trauma surgery.

MarySmith’sPlace – Afghan adventures #22 with fighting and kidnappings

Now we were living on the building site work on the new clinic was speeding up and patients seemed unconcerned about the makeshift consulting room. I still spent part of the day writing out case notes and prescriptions. It was good practice for my language skills and could listen to the gossip – even if I did still need Hussain to translate much of it.

Much of the talk was about the fighting which had recently taken place. From what people were saying it had been more than the usual inter-party skirmish and several days of heavy fighting had resulted in casualties, both dead and injured, on both sides.

We decided to visit the Qolijou hospital.

And the final post today is from Pete Springer and shares the benefits of a monthly reunion of retired teachers who are family.

My Second Family by Pete Springer

While I like a little spontaneity in life, when it comes right down to it, I am a creature of habit. There are certain routines that I enjoy over and over again. What’s better than that first sip of coffee in the morning? How about having a beer with a buddy? I seldom turn down a cold one, but it’s twice as enjoyable spending that moment with a friend. What’s better than taking a walk on the beach? That’s easy! Lose the shoes, sink my feet into the wet sand, watch the dogs run with pleasure and happiness, and enjoy the time with a pal. The common denominator is that these experiences are better when shared with friends.

One of my more recent traditions is that my former coworkers and I gather for our retirement lunch once a month. Since retirement three years ago, I seldom miss these gatherings. While I like food as much as the next guy, it’s more about spending time with the people I admire.
