Smorgasbord Poetry – Colleen Chesebro’s #Tanka Tuesday Challenge 211 – Garland Cinquain – Birthdays by Sally Cronin

I have missed participating in this challenge and hope to be more active again this year… This week Colleen Chesebro offers us a choice.. Abhanga or Poet’s Choice

Since I have one coming up this month, I thought I would create a Garland Cinquain on the subject of Birthdays.

Garland Cinquain – Birthdays

Birthdays
a reminder
of the passing of years
celebrated with lit candles
and cake.

Wrinkles
are etched on skin
laughter lines they tell you
signs of character and a life
well lived

People
in the present
and in our memories
are thought of with love as this day
passes

How fast
they come around
the older that we get
a caution to make the most of
each day.

Tempting
as it might be
to disregard this date
it stands as a testament to
our lives

Birthdays
are etched on skin
and in our memories
a caution to make the most of
our lives.

I hope you have enjoyed my poem and if you would still like to participate this week Colleen Chesebro’s  Abhanga or Poet’s Choice

Smorgasbord Poetry – Colleen Chesebro’s Poetry Challenge – #SynonymsOnly -#GarlandCinquain – Garden Birds – Sally Cronin

One of the most interesting and complex forms of Colleen Chesebro’s Challenge is the Garland Cinquain which she beautifully demonstrated last week; The Old Gods

Colleen explains the form: “This poem is created with a 2/4/6/8/2 syllable count for each of the five stanzas. The last stanza is where it gets interesting. You take line one from the first stanza, line two from the second stanza, etc. until you’ve created the last refrain”.

For this week’s challenge Colleen’s 2020 Weekly #Tanka Tuesday #Poetry Challenge No. 181 #SynonymsOnly the prompt words were ‘Nimble and Enigma’...and I have selected ‘Agile and Mystery’ and  am attempting my first Garland Cinquain….

With the recent sunny weather I have been spending my time in the garden, and after a couple of afternoons of getting used to my presence, I have been accepted as part of the garden fixtures. This has enabled me to be a guest at the feast and washing rituals of a number of birds, incuding my ongoing tricksters, the ravens…

Garland Cinquain – Garden Birds

The birds
in the garden
have created a world
removed from the reality
of life.

The Doves
wary and shy
hover on the sidelines
waiting to be invited to
the feast

Ravens
fall from the sky
bring ancient mystery
intent on plundering the stores
of seed

Starlings
a raucous flock
delight in the water
splashing and preening their feathers
of jet

Sparrows
agile and swift
dart backwards and forwards
eager for the sunflower seeds
that gleam.

The birds
wary and shy
bring ancient mystery
splashing and preening their feathers
that gleam
