Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – Author Updates #Reviews – Miriam Hurdle, Jessica Norrie, Cynthia Reyes and Gwendolyn Plano

The first book today to receive a recent review is Miriam Hurdle for her collection Songs of the Heartstrings: Poems of Gratitude and Beatitude

About  Songs of Heartstrings

Human being has the willpower to travel through an exhausting journey, win a tough battle, and heal a deep wound. Strength from hope keeps us going until the light at the end of the tunnel is in sight and striving until the storm is over.

This poetic memoir comprises themes ranging from the suffering through an undesirable relationship, surviving an aggressive cancer, to the happiness in true love, the joy of parenthood, and gratefulness toward the Maker. Hurdle reveals the honest self-talk and reflects a heart filled with optimism, faith and trust. She illustrates the poems with her beautiful photos and paintings.

A recent review for the collection on Goodreads

Sep 14, 2019 James rated it it was amazing  ·  review of another edition

Songs of Heartstrings: Poems of Gratitude and Beatitude is the first book of poems I’ve read by Miriam Hurdle. This collection was published in 2018 after the poet found hope through the many lessons she’d experienced in the previous years of her life. Nature inspired her, pushed her to conquer all the obstacles thrown in her path. Though not a frequent reader in this genre, I do review these works a few times each year, as I studied poetry in college and find myself interested in reading it on occasion. I am glad I chose this one and encourage others to give the author a chance too.

The collection is organized in a few manners: by type of poem and by category. In fact, to me, some were mini stories and not necessarily a poem. That said, the author clearly shows us that poetry comes in all forms. It’s not just about rhyming or repetition. Nature is the first focus, aptly titled Songs of Nature. I feel like Ms. Hurdle wrote her poems while sitting in nature, witnessing the great beauty of animals, insects, weather, trees, and other naturalistic parts of our world. Frequent photographs, some the author took herself, accompany the sections, showing us the inspiration of what led to the poem.

Rooted with some religious beliefs, the author connects with God to openly ask for help and thank the Creator for all that she’s been given. There is raw pain and innate fear in the words, but there is also hope and promise. At just the right moments, Ms. Hurdles takes a swift turn to share something more light and funny, almost poking a bit of amusement at something that tickles her in nature. It fits, almost matching the surprises in store for all of us throughout the day.

One of my favorites, A Tiny Spider, is simple but deep:

A tiny spider labors
every night to
spin his web in
perfect symmetry.
What an innate architect is he!
patiently watches for
his prey to volunteer.
Meal for the night and
reward for the
labor and wait.
Before dawn, down
his trap and hides away.
When the night is nigh
he starts his day.
Spins his web
again, again.
Again!

Covering other basic human emotions and complex dreams, we experience dissonance, physical healing, marriage, parenthood, tribute, reflection, challenge, and inspiration. I personally enjoyed the conversations with her parents, learning about how she connected with them from two continents so far apart. Kudos to the author for a wonderful opportunity to express herself and wade through the pain and sacrifice we encounter in life, only to find the ray of light through words and expressions. 4.5 stars for the full collection.

The second author with a review is Jessica Norrie for her recently released book The Magic Carpet.

About The Magic Carpet

Outer London, September 2016, and neighbouring eight-year-olds have homework: prepare a traditional story to perform with their families at a school festival. But Nathan’s father thinks his son would be better off doing sums; Sky’s mother’s enthusiasm is as fleeting as her bank balance, and there’s a threatening shadow hanging over poor Alka’s family. Only Mandeep’s fragile grandmother and new girl Xoriyo really understand the magical powers of storytelling. As national events and individual challenges jostle for the adults’ attention, can these two bring everyone together to ensure the show will go on?

One of the recent reviews for the book on Goodreads

I must admit that I got an expected but completely welcome surprise when I read this book. The magic carpet is an intricate and beautifully told tale of a school project and several families involved. Each child in the class has been allocated a fairy story to take home and make their own any way they wish.

The narratives switches between each family and each chapter is dedicated to a different class member. Diverse, intriguing and almost voyeuristic, we are allowed to peep into the lives of each family as they tackle the homework project in very different ways. All the adults in the story are increasingly distracted by events in their own lives and it’s up to the children to bring everyone together.

I adore that Jessica Norrie has given each family a very unique identity through circumstances. culture and race. Each relationship and situation is delicately written and issues are tackled with sensitivity but bring he characters to life. I became invested in every single child in this novel.

This is a breathtaking and addictive story about stories, families and children.

The next author with reviews for her latest release is Cynthia Reyes, a gardening memoir – Twigs in my Hair.

About Twigs in my Hair

Author Cynthia Reyes returns with Twigs in My Hair, a book about her lifelong passion for gardens and nature and the surprising relationships and events involved. Gorgeous photographs by Hamlin Grange complement a humorous and profound story. A beautiful gift for gardeners and non-gardeners. Readers will meet a variety of interesting creatures, both human and animal, some of whom compete for gardening produce or gardening glory. You may conclude, after reading Twigs in My Hair, that the gardener’s love for growing things swings from reverence to mania. But there is also a deeply emotional side to this story about what happens when a passionate gardener can no longer do what she loves.

K. Pickering 5.0 out of 5 stars A Book to Savor September 7, 2019

I intended to take my time with this book… To read a few pages every day…make it last. I did not succeed. Every time it caught my eye it beckoned me back and just under 4 days later I was finished.

I would highly recommend “Twigs in my Hair” by Cynthia Reyes. She invites us into her world through her gardens, past and present. Her beautiful stories are accentuated by her husband’s (Hamlin Grange) striking photographs. Photographs that give us a glimpse into their gardens and their lives.

Thank you for allowing us to sit awhile in your gardens. Thank you for introducing us to your neighbors and friends. Thank you for sharing part of yourself, warts and all. We are richer for it. – Karen Pickering

And the final author today with a recent review is Gwendolyn M. Plano for her memoir Letting To into Perfect Love.

About the book

Inspiring and unforgettable, Letting Go into Perfect Love is a riveting account of a journey through the terror of domestic violence to a faith that transforms all. As a college administrator, Gwendolyn M. Plano lived her professional life in a highly visible and accountable space–but as a wife and mother, behind closed doors, she and her family experienced unpredictable threat. The statistics are staggering–every 9 seconds in the United States, a woman is assaulted or beaten–but to Gwen, this was her secret; it was her shame. When her husband eventually turned his brutality on her son, she knew she could no longer remain silent.

Alternately heart-wrenching and joyful, this is a story of triumph over adversity–one woman’s uplifting account of learning how to forgive the unforgiveable, recover her sense of self, bring healing into her family, and honor the journey home. Accompanied by glimpses of celestial beings, Gwen charts a path through sorrow to joy–and ultimately, writes of the one perfect love we all seek.

The story that unfolds is not a blow-by-blow account of savagery hidden within a twenty-five-year marriage; rather, it is a walk through innocent dreams betrayed–to courage found. “Tragedy spares no one;” Gwen points out, “it just courts each of us differently. One way or another, it finds a path into our hearts, and there we do battle with the intruder.” As a survivor who came out of her unhealthy relationship determined to start over, Gwen artfully depicts the challenges of balancing the obligations of motherhood and career with her family’s healing process, while offering hope to anyone facing monumental challenges.

Integral to Gwen’s journey is her faith. Because of her Catholic upbringing, she struggles with the scandal of divorce, but finally makes her peace. When her daughter reveals her molestation by clergy, however, her fragile sense of serenity dissolves. We walk with Gwen as she tries to make sense of this horror. The agony experienced by the entire family is devastatingly palpable. Against all odds, Gwen emerges confident of her faith and begins to see the threads of meaning in even the darkest moments.

This is a book for all. But, for those who have been in a destructive relationship, Gwen’s story will be heartbreakingly familiar. For those who have been spared such diminishment, it will provide insight into the often misunderstood phenomenon of domestic violence. Since one in every four women will experience such threat in her lifetime, understanding that murky world may provide the reader with the skills needed to help his or her sister or friend or neighbor. Whether victim or friend, though, readers will be inspired by the author’s courage and ultimate resolution of her predicament. And, you may see your own challenges a little differently.

One of the recent reviews for the book

In her book Letting Go, Gwen Plano recounted her two abusive marriages in honesty and courage. She married the first husband after he had a mental breakdown. The psychiatrist gave her hope that Bruce could recover. She married him intending to help him and saved him from being admitted. She couldn’t handle his outrage and filed a divorce. She married Ron six months after they met. There were signs of Ron’s disturbed behavior, but Gwen stated that she was in a fantasy world of young love. In the years to come, Ron uprooted the family on minutes of notice and moved across the country and even to Japan. After they came back to the US, he was getting more violent, demeaning and controlling. He physically abused young son when the baby was seven months old. When the daughter was sexually abused at age five by clergies and complained about that years later, Ron didn’t want to deal with it.

During the twenty-five years of abuse, Gwen studied and taught. The workplace was her escape. The busyness kept them going for twenty-five years. At one point, she realized Ron made her feel “small.” In an abusive relationship, women kept the abuse in secret, fear the reporting results in more abuse. These women may fear of not being able to stand on their own feet.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – #Book Review – The Contract by John W. Howell and Gwen Plano

smorgasbord book reviews

I have recently read The Contract: Between Heaven and Earth by John W. Howell and Gwen Plano and here is my review.

About The Contract

The earth is threatened with a catastrophic political event which could result in international warfare and destroy all life on the planet. In heaven, a divine council decides that extraordinary measures are essential. They call for an intervention that involves two souls returning to earth. The chosen two sign a contract that they will work to avert the disaster.

Brad Channing, a Navy SEAL, and Sarah O’Brien, a teacher, become heaven’s representatives on earth. The story follows them as they individually and then together face overwhelming obstacles and eventually end up on a strategic Air Force base in California. It is there that they discover a conspiracy to assassinate the President of the United States. The terrorists have a plan for global dominance and they are determined to complete their mission. Although military leadership appears to have the President’s best interests at heart, it is not clear who can be trusted and who should be feared. The action is rough and tumble as Brad and Sarah try to figure out the culprits for the plot that will turn into a worldwide conflagration unless stopped.

If you enjoy thrillers, this is one with enough twists and adventure to keep you riveted and guessing. If you like your thriller along with a good romance, Brad and Sarah’s initial attraction and eventual love will sustain you as they live out their heavenly and earthly desires. A Great summer read.

My review for the book

The Contract is a fusion of fantasy, thriller and romance and is the debut novel of the new collaboration between John. W. Howell and Gwen Plano.

I have read all of John Howell’s books and enjoyed, so I was eager to find out how these two popular writers would rise to the challenge of collaborating.

The concept is intriguing, and the opening chapter sets out this well, with the introduction to two souls, who had little time on earth to enjoy their love of each other. They are tasked by the divine council with preventing a major catastrophe on earth that could threaten mankind, but it will mean that they will be separated and have no memory of their task. Their hosts are two people with the knowledge and skill set to overcome the threat, but they are thousands of miles apart and both in mortal danger.

The writers do a good job of bringing these two characters together; now infused with the souls who have been contracted to neutralise the upcoming disaster. Watched and abetted  by guardian angels, their relationship begins with subterfuge, but quickly becomes attraction, and then love strong enough to take them through to the end of their endeavour.

This love story runs parallel to the fast escalation of violence and intrigue that reveals hidden agendas and treason in high places. The story has a good pace and there is plenty of action to keep the thriller lovers engaged with a number of surprising twists and turns in the plot along the way.

The final confrontation is a fitting climax to the story, bringing together all the players and their roles in the conspiracy, in an action packed battle of good against evil.

I am sure that this writing duo will go from strength to strength following this creative and exciting debut.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Getting to Know You #Interview with John W. Howell.

Welcome to this week’s interview and today my guest is John W. Howell, author of the thrilling John J. Cannon Trilogy, which I read and enjoyed, as well as Circumstances of Childhood which took us into the world of football and high finance. Just released is The Contract which is a collaboration with author Gwen Plano, and is already receiving great reviews. More about John’s books later, but first the official word about this charming author and blogger.

John began his writing as a full-time occupation after an extensive business career. His specialty is thriller fiction novels, but John also writes poetry and short stories. His first book, My GRL, introduces the exciting adventures of the book’s central character, John J. Cannon.

The second Cannon novel, His Revenge, continues the adventure, while the final book in the trilogy, Our Justice, launched in September 2016. .Twiggy, Lucy, Bailey

Time to find out which of the questions John has selected to answer and a look at his wonderful selection of books.

Welcome John and can you describe one most embarrassing moments of your life?

When I was in College I loved to, play practical jokes on my fraternity brothers. One night while they were all having dinner in the lowest level of the house, I took out all the light bulbs of every lamp in every room on the three floors above. Of course, I kept the blubs in a pillow case since I knew I would be returning them. After dinner, they all came up to the upper floors, and it was pitch black. Everyone was yelling and couldn’t figure out what was wrong. I was sneaking up the back stair with the bulbs and was caught. The brothers stripped off my clothes and wrapped me in masking tape. They then carried me across the street and chained and locked me to a sorority house porch pillar. Long story short the police and fire department were called since it required a bolt cutter to undo the chain. My tape was beginning to show places that should not be seen. I was given a warning and had to take a walk of shame back across the street. I never checked to see if the story made the nightly news.

How would you describe your fashion sense?

For forty plus years I dressed in the classic business style. I wore subtle color suits of deep blue, black, or grey with maybe a barely noticeable pinstripe. Summers and winters called for different weights of wool but still wool. Shirts were usually white or blue with white cuffs and collar and always a silk tie. Shoes varied in color from black to black and included cap-toed oxfords, wing-tipped oxfords, and plain toed oxfords. It was easy to dress. I merely pulled out a suit from the left and put it back on the right.

Very dapper suited John.

So if you saw me today, you might ask, “What happened?” You see I never wear dress shoes or socks. In fact, the only shoes I wear are boat shoes with no socks, and I only do that when I dress up. I am usually in board shorts and a t-shirt. I do have some nice fishing shirts that I occasionally wear to the doctors but typically am pretty casual. Flip flops, cotton baseball cap, shorts and a t-shirt are du rigor today.

Sally here: I found this very dapper beach photo of John to show you too.

What do you consider to be the best dish that you prepare – and have you the recipe?

I love to cook and have some favorite dishes. The one that stands out regarding consistency and praise is my pasta Amatriciana. It has an authentic flavor with just a hint of heat and a creamy texture which can be described as melt in your mouth. I have the recipe.

Image Pinterest

Ingredients:

  • I pound penne pasta
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 5 strips of bacon chopped
  • 2oz Pancetta chopped
  • Diced 3/4 cup onion
  • Diced 1 TLBS garlic
  • Diced, I x 28 oz can whole plum tomatoes, drained, chopped with juice reserved,
  • ¼ cup fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 TLBS freshly ground black pepper (very important)
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese.

Directions:

  1. Cook penne to el dente (9-10 min).
  2. In large pan heat olive oil on medium, add bacon and Pancetta and cook till light brown stirring often.
  3. Add onion and cook until tender.
  4. Add garlic and cook until soften (do not burn).
  5. Add chopped tomatoes (I usually put them in the pan whole and use kitchen shears to cut them up)
  6. Simmer for 10 minutes on low heat.
  7. Add basil, pepper and Parmesan cheese and stir.
  8. As the sauce thickens, add the reserved tomato juice until the desired thickness is achieved.
  9. Add the sauce to the pasta and serve with parmesan cheese.

If you could get rid of one household chore, what would it be?

I would love to get rid of Vacuum cleaning. (Hoovering in the UK). Our house is all wood and tile flooring, and with three dogs you can imagine the tumbling tumbleweeds that build up if the floor isn’t swept regularly. Although we have a central vacuum system, it is still a chore to do each room. If you try to skip a place for a while, then the tell-tale dust bunnies roll through the door. When we had the house built, we were supposed to have kick plate suction outlets strategically placed throughout the house. This would allow attacking the dust periodically with a broom and merely sweeping into the kick suction place. The contractor thought we were crazy and installed the kind of ports where you have to plug in a hose. By the time we discovered the mistake, it was too late to go back. So now we have this long hose which is a pain to get out and put away. If we had the kick plates, the room would take maybe three minutes to sweep. Also, when my wife and I divided up chores, it was my luck to get the vacuum duty now that the kickplate idea was dead.

Sally here: If I could offer some advice John, use your vacuum chore as an opportunity to entertain and obtain some exercise.

Knowing now, what you didn’t know then, what would you have done differently?

If I knew then that getting a book published need not be a hurried process, I would have taken more time on the first. Once I finished the first manuscript I was hell-bent on getting it published. I sent out queries and lo and behold a publisher wanted my book. I was so thrilled and barely read the contract. Of course, I signed and then came to understand that it would be three long years before I could finally be on my own to continue publishing. You see the publisher had the rights to all my characters. Yes, that’s right. When I wrote to find out when the second book in the Trilogy was going to be published, there was an extended period of no answer followed by information to the point that no one knew when the next book would come out. Now I was in a pickle since I used this time to finish the other two books. I finally asked for and got a waiver on the character question and then published the second book. I allowed the contract to expire without a renewal. Had I not been in such a hurry I think I could have taken my time to find a different publisher with probably less stress.

Now it is time to take a look at the new book written in collaboration with Gwen Plano. The Contract: Between Heaven and Earth

About The Contract

The earth is threatened with a catastrophic political event which could result in international warfare and destroy all life on the planet. In heaven, a divine council decides that extraordinary measures are essential. They call for an intervention that involves two souls returning to earth. If you enjoy thrillers, this is one with enough twists and adventure to keep you riveted and guessing. If you like your thriller along with a good romance, Brad and Sarah’s initial attraction and eventual love will sustain you as they live out their heavenly and earthly desires. A Great summer read.

One of the recent reviews for the book

This story grabbed me from the first word on the first page. Imagine that humans make contracts before returning to Earth to complete lessons or missions? While this book is fiction, many of us believe this is exactly the case. When Teresa and Peter are summoned to an emergency gathering of the Elder Council (in heaven), they have no idea they are about to be chosen for an Earth mission that will not only save lives, but the entire Planet Earth itself.

Enter Brad and Sarah. Both come into bodies and situations that are traumatic and frightening. AND, they have no memory of what they agreed to do in heaven. Sarah is in a dangerously abusive marriage and Brad is a Navy Seal in active battle. As this story unfolds, it is fascinating how the authors brought these two together on Earth and how aptly they depicted their instant attraction to each other. I’m not going to post a spoiler and tell you the outcome of this story. I will only tell you that is the perfect blend of thriller and spiritual – between the yin and yang. It is a fast-paced, riveting and rewarding read. I hope we will see more collaborations from these two authors If you love a good thriller with the stakes so high it makes your pulse pound, while gaining spiritual insights, you will love this book!

One of the early reviews for the book

I was both excited and curious to read a book co-authored by two authors who have earned my admiration for each of their books. Authors John W. Howell and Gwen Plano both have resoundingly earned five-star reviews from me for their individual works.

Their total diversity of writing styles and genres would have presented them with a challenge when undertaking to co-author this work. I’m delighted with the outcome. They’ve met and exceeded my expectations.

This book goes beyond man’s earthly desires to dominate and control his environment. It takes you to the dark places fueled by man’s thirst for absolute power. It shows you the joy of the heavenly plane, and the release from pain that it offers.

Brad Channing, a Navy SEAL, and Sarah O’Brien a nurse are chosen by the divine council of heavenly elders to become their representations on earth.

The reader is taken on a thrill ride as the story develops, each of the characters are beautifully crafted and intensely visual, with wonderful dialogue moving the book along at a great pace. The character development is outstanding.

The relationship between Brad and Sarah develops over a relatively brief span of time, as they are thrown together by circumstance, and make the decision to stay together by choice. Their tender and developing love for one another is deftly handled, adding the depth of warmth that the story demands.

This work has been meticulously researched, and all references within it add to the utterly convincing terrorist threat, and the dark forces at work in the corridors of power, bringing into question the motives of players that may have been seen initially to have no hidden agenda whatsoever.

Fast paced and action packed … this book will satisfy even the most devout thriller readers. The conclusion was intense and utterly believable. These authors have amalgamated their individual skills into a first-rate work of fiction. This work stands tall in celebration of good people willing to lay down their lives to protect and defend their country and the principles on which it was founded.

I found this to be a riveting reading experience, and one I can wholeheartedly recommend.

One of the recent reviews for Letting Go into Perfect Love

Author Gwen Plano’s intimate portrait of her abusive marriage causes powerful reactions of anger, sympathy, and finally joy as she breaks away and finds her happily-ever-after. Unless one has been in an abusive relationship, it’s hard to say what one will do. Ms. Plano takes us inside the workings of a woman’s mind as she considers not only herself, but also her children. While I won’t say “Letting Go …” was the kind of story to be enjoyed, I got a greater understanding from the sufferer’s perspective, and I was happy with the positive outcome of Ms. Plano’s well-written work.

That outcome is that when an abused person has gone as far as he or she can go, there’s help, both spiritually and physically. The sufferer grows stronger, thinks clearer, and discovers that the tormentor no longer has control.
