Dakota D 4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging illustrations and interesting facts Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2021

This would be a great book to give to a child whose family is planning a trip to Hyde Park or who has just been there. It would also be great for kids who have an interest in American history. Photos of the house are interspersed with interesting facts about Roosevelt’s life. I learned some things myself! Parents may want to help younger readers to understand some of the basics and concepts that are not clearly spelled out, such as an introduction to who FDR was and what Hyde Park is, but I think older elementary students will enjoy this book on their own. The photos and illustrations are quite engaging and will be enough to keep browsers turning the pages.

A review for the book

Barry m. 5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable read  Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 May 2021

I bought this book for my nephew 9 years and my niece 7 years. They both loved it and their mother said they have reread it more than once. I read the story myself, being pulled in by the fun image on the front cover and found it funny, exciting and endearing. It is a fast moving adventure story of three children living in the jungle but the main protagonists are Joyce and Olan aged 7 and 8 and their friend the Magic Gorilla. The children explore the jungle and make friends with the talking animals living there; they get into fun scrapes, learn some lessons and get gifts along the way. It really is a breath of fresh air and a great story for boys and girls alike.

Smorgasbord Children’s Reading Room – #Cheetahs Patricia Furstenberg, #History Barbara Ann Mojica, #Nature Joyce Murphy

Welcome to the Children’s Reading Room with books for ages up to twelve years old.

The first author today is Patricia Furstenberg with a picture book for younger children that celebrates the differences between us. The Cheetah and the Dog

About the book

Here is a cheerful picture book with sweet rhymes that celebrates diversity and promotes friendship, sure to resonate with families – particularly non-traditional ones and with the fans of Michael Jackson’s “Black or White”.

When a cheetah cub and a puppy dog bump into each other while chasing the same prey, it is only natural for them to play together until sundown; and the next day; and the following one.

The two animals care for each other so much that they even rescue their respective packs, thus becoming an African tale.

Inspired by the true story of Kasi, the orphaned male cheetah, and Mtani, the female Labrador, which struck a remarkable friendship and remained life-long friends, “The Cheetah and the Dog” is a glorious celebration of curiosity, respect for life, and unconventional wisdom, a heart-warming, fun read that belongs on any family’s bedtime shelf.

It’s such a heart-warming story! The full-color illustrations have geometric, playful qualities. They made me smile.:-) (There are also cheetah photographs at the end.)

I appreciated all the cheetah facts at the end of the story, and they’d be good discussion points for parent and child if the child is interested in wildlife.

I was reading an article about cheetahs on Furstenberg’s website and was curious about her children’s story with the cheetah. I’m glad it was on Kindle Unlimited; I downloaded and read it right away. Fabulous book.

Inspiring and educational book for young readers! “Independence Hall” is a great combination of historical details and interesting drawings + photos that tells about America’s fight for independence.

Readers will love interesting facts about Independence Hall and Continental Congress. Our children have to learn more about History and this book can do this in an entertaining and inspiring way – just what modern kids need.

I think parents can read this book aloud for younger readers explaining some words and it will even turn it into a useful family time.

The final author today is Joyce Murphy with a review for The Bee and The Dandelion – for ages 2 to 6 years.

About the book

Sally’s story made even the leader feel sad. And the Leader said …

“We will make a new law, all shiny and new,

To save all the bees, and you children too.”

The Bee and the Dandelion is a heart-warming, picture, rhyme book that tells the story of a Bumblebee, a little girl called Sally and a flower called a dandelion. Sally loves to pick dandelions but one day, when a Bumblebee flies onto her knee and begs her not to take his food; Sally is taught how precious flowers are to bees and their environment. Moved by the Bumblebee’s plight, Sally is stirred to action and with the help of her friends; she gets a new law written to protect the Bumblebees and themselves.

This book is inspired by a desire to instil a love and appreciation of bees, insects, animals and the environment into the hearts of children everywhere and teach our little ones in a fun way, that they can be proactive, and play their part in protecting our planet and the creatures that live on it.

Told in bouncy rhythm and rhyme, this book will engage children of different ages in different ways. This would make an excellent started book for early readers. At the same time, toddlers, kindergarten and preschool children, can use this book as an early learning tool or listen as it is read aloud to them. The book will also apeal to children who enjoy rhyme books by Julia Donaldson and Rachel Bright.

The Bee and the Dandelion is an ideal values book for children. It can also be used to introduce early environmentally friendly principles through a relatable, enjoyable, rhyming story. It also includes fun facts about bees. Perfect for children aged 2 – 6 years.

This is a beautiful story to teach children about making new friends, and being loving to others who come from different backgrounds, or do not look the same as they do. Not only is this a story for children, but it’s one that adults need to remember and keep true to as well. Everyone is different in this world and that what makes us all special!

Pirates, galleons, and swords, oh my! An engaging story that mirrors the world paralympics but with pirates! This is an exciting story that celebrates inclusion and multiculturalism with a generous sprinkling of pirate speak. Throughout the book, the reader is asked to draw their favourite ship..thus creating an interactive experience. I would love to have seen some illustrations sprinkled throughout this book (maybe a future edition?) but nevertheless and engaging read!

Avid Reader 5.0 out of 5 stars A well rounded brief history for kids  Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2020

Little Miss HISTORY Travels to INDEPENDENCE HALL & The Museum of the American Revolution by Barbara Ann Mojica, is a children’s illustrated history book of the early days of the United States Government. It covers the late 1700s Revolutionary War Era, with Miss History as the reader companion. A glossary of appropriate terms is included in the back. The pictures are easily recognized in many history books, covering many of the sites people go to see each and every year. And of course Miss History is along for the ride, describing the events as they unfold. Although a short work, this book is a nice tool for young readers who know little or nothing about that era in our history. It could also be a useful resource for struggling learners, or for those who want (or need) a quick refresher. Highly recommended.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every book of this series, but was apprehensive of reading this final book – because it is the FINAL book of the series.

However, I’m glad I did read it, with all its twists, turns and changes of fortunes for Fred, George and everyone else.

My only wish is, that more ‘sequels’ were forthcoming…

D.L. Finn has recently joined both Cafe’s with her books and today I would like to showcase Elizabeth’s War.

About the book

It’s April of 1917, and World War I has reached Elizabeth’s family on their wheat farm in North Dakota. Although the battles are being fought overseas, the war has affected her in ways she couldn’t have imagined. Elizabeth is thrust into a new role after her brother and father leave the farm to do their part in the war. And she’s only eleven years old!
Having almost died as a toddler, Elizabeth has been babied most of her life. Now she must learn to help out around the farm; cooking, cleaning, and tending to the garden and livestock. No longer can she run from her responsibilities, as she did when her horse Rosie was giving birth. There were complications during the delivery, and Elizabeth panicked and froze. The foal didn’t make it.
Elizabeth faces her biggest challenge yet as a huge Christmas Eve snowstorm rages outside, cutting her family off from any help; and her mother is about to have a baby! Her brother and sister are laid up with chicken pox. Does Elizabeth face her fears or run from them? Can she help her family, who need her more now than ever? Or will she retreat like she did when Rosie needed her?

One of the recent reviews for the book

Elizabeth’s War by D.L. Finn is the fourth book I’ve read by this author who writes in diverse styles – short stories, poetry and memoirs, and now, this children’s book in the historical fiction genre.

Elizabeth is eleven years old in 1917 and lives a protected life on her parents’ farm – she almost died as a three-year old – thus her parents and even her siblings dote on her, and she does not seem to be given any real responsibilities even though farm life at the time would have dictated differently. Her mother and older sister, Pearl, protect her and make excuses for her. All this change once her father and eldest brother join the war, and suddenly, Elizabeth has to face a few challenging situations over the next year and a half. She learns to cook, knit and catch a baby (all very hilariously told by the author), and she also deals with the loss of a good friend.

Plusses for me: The author shows the reader much – not just telling a story – inviting readers into Elizabeth’s world with good scene setting and dialogue combination, creating a living-in-the-moment scenario. I love natural and fluent dialogue supported by good scene setting, i.e. showing, making the characters alive and thus involving the reader emotionally. I love this writing style where becoming part of the story and living in the moment, enhance reading pleasure. Dialogue throughout is natural and fluent, and looking from a Middle Grade reader’s point of view, language is easy to follow, but still suitable for older ones who prefer clean uncluttered stories.Historical fiction for children – not an easy genre to execute successfully – is challenging in that it is difficult to know how much background fact is needed without boring them with information overload while setting the different scenes. In my opinion, the author did an excellent job.

The book has a lovely glossary which looks like it was printed on parchment paper. The book is a teaser, an introduction if you will for greater study into any of the previous topics, reading a book like this is a wonderful way to open the mind and spark curiosity. Of course is you are visiting Independence Hall, this book is a MUST! Illustrations are gorgeous!
