Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New on the Shelves – Scout Pilot of the Free Union #SpaceOpera by Will Macmillan Jones.

Very pleased to welcome Will Macmillan Jones to the Cafe and Bookstore, with his latest release, and his other books for children and adults. Scout Pilot of the Free Union is the first in a new collection of Space Opera novels.

About Scout Pilot of the Free Union

Captain Frank Eric Russell is captain/pilot of a Valhalla Class Star Destroyer – until there is an embarrassing incident during a diplomatic mission to the border with the Imperium. Disciplined by being transferred to the Reconnaissance Unit of The Free Union’s Star Fleet, he finds himself assigned to an outdated Speedbird Scoutship. The missions are less prestigious, less rigorously overseen – and a lot less safe.

Threats, terror and mortal danger lurk behind every planet and asteroid as Frank tries to survive the life of a Reconnaissance Unit Scout Pilot patrolling the barely defined border between The Free Union and the Imperium during the uneasy truce between the two Galactic Powers.

Frank and his ageing Speedbird are sent on a number of perilous missions around the galaxy, both for the mysterious Colonel Rosto and on normal Space Corps business. On the way he meets a new sentient species, a terrifying space spider, finds himself involved in a deal for new spaceships that goes horribly wrong and finally has to escape the clutches of The Imperium’s Chief Enforcer, the feared Colonel Starker, before becoming involved in a battle as the rivals for domination of the galaxy clash in space.

With everything against him, can Frank and his trusty Speedbird live to run away another day?

One of the early reviews for the book from Jim Webster on his blog.

The books follow the career (in this case, career as in ‘When the brakes failed, the wagon careered downhill’) of Captain Frank Eric Russell, who becomes a Scout pilot of the Free Union. The stories are told by the good Captain in the first person.

This means that we whilst we see events through the eyes of our hero, we also begin to realise that he is in some things an unreliable observer. It begins to dawn upon the reader that Russell is a far better pilot and far more generally competent than he admits.

The universe is divided between three main powers. The first two that we meet are the Free Union, which our hero serves, and the Imperium, who are the enemy in waiting. There is no war between the two but there is a constant bickering at the outposts and attempts to destabilise the other. Finally there are the Merchant Princes, who happily trade with anybody.

In the first book, ‘Scout Pilot of the Free Union’, each chapter seems to be a separate mission and a separate story. But eventually you start to realise that there is a common thread starting to pull them together, until by the time you get into the second book, ‘Infinity is for losers’, we see that our hero is caught up in something far more complicated and dangerous than he first thought. I have no intention of saying more and spoiling the plot for anybody.

This isn’t hard military SF; similarly we are spared being plunged into some dark angst ridden dystopia, these stories are Space Opera. Admittedly there are times when Russell sees his superiors as a bigger threat to his survival than the enemy, but I suspect many service personnel could empathise with this.

Will Macmillan Jones is a story teller and a fine one. As I read these books I found myself swept along by the story.

At some point it appears the modern reviewer has to award ‘stars’. It’s not longer good enough to describe something as a ‘cracking good read.’ But I am not a number, I am a free man. I will wave my hand airily and announce that these books are undoubtedly somewhere betwixt and between four and five stars.

The far more important question is will I read the rest of the series. Too damned right I will. I’m looking forward to them and when they arrive I’ll tear open the packet and start reading. They’re fun!

About Will Macmillan Jones

A fifty something lover of blues, rock and jazz, I have recently fulfilled a lifetime ambition: extending my bookcases to fill an entire wall of my home office. I am lucky enough to live in Wales, which for overseas readers is the main part of the UK: the separate countries of England and Scotland are superglued on to the right hand side of the border…

I’m a novelist, poet, storyteller and international tax consultant (no, really) who adores words, and not so long ago managed to win a national competition for Flash Fiction.

My Paranormal mystery series started with a very personal book,The Showing, but has now grown into a full series intended to run for 6 books.

Coming shortly will be some YA fantasy and a book that should be romance, but won’t be (no happy ending, so a bit too much like real life).

There are some books for children, and my first love as a writer: my comic fantasy series The Banned Underground, now released by Red Kite Publishing and available here. Starting with The Amulet of Kings, and running through The Mystic Accountants and The Vampire Mechanic to Bass Instinct and The SatNav of Doom, each book is a stand alone work and the series can be read in any order. Warning: these books contain beer, pizza, loud music and an enormous joke count. They may be unsuitable for those without a sense of humour.

You can enjoy watching and listening to Will doing som oral storytelling at an event in Wales. The legend of the Wizard of Alderley Edge…

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New on the Shelves – The Fright Factory by Lillian Csernica

Time for a little horror and some guidance on how to create the perfect terrifying environment. The Fright Factory by Lillian Csernica.

About The Fright Factory

Horror can be anything from the most elegant ghost story to the total freak-out of a bloodthirsty serial killer. The Fright Factory can show you how to make the most of your story ideas. Choose the best setting. Build a better monster Learn the fine art of creating suspense! It’s all here, including an essential list of the worst horror cliches no editor wants to see.

A review for the book on Amazon

Lillian Csernicas Fright Factory is a must read for people who want to write horror or for those who already do but want to make it even better. Though this is not a very big book Lillian has filled each page with tips and ideas and still manages to make it an enjoyable and fascinating read. My favorite part is her refrences to books, stories, and even films to show you what she is saying unlike other writing books that create an example and you are just suppose to remember it when you write. I am not a writer but I do love reading horror so it was interesting to read because some of the things she brought up as things not to do are actually things I dislike about horror novels so I know how it is.

And a review on Goodreads

Julia rated it Four Stars

This is one book that is non-fiction that is meant to help you in your stepping forward of writing a horror or dark fantasy novel. As a result the subjects are easily approachable, presented in a truth of matter style and given to you with a straight dose of this is what you need to do it but if you don’t listen then it isn’t on me (which I like that.

The various chapters of the book touch on getting the right timing the right setting and the right monster whether he is driven by good or bad intentions just to name a few. Others touch subjects that shouldn’t be written on, how to advance writing a multi-genre story and which clichés to most definitely avoid.

The parts that I enjoyed the most truly is the fact that the author was continually reminding the reader that H/DF stories need realistic emotional strength to move forward and to never overlook the small things for they can make or break a story.

And finally I liked the touching of bases of various “monsters” countries all around the world. With the world of paranormal romance claiming vampires and werewolves it is hard to find a book that doesn’t these types of characters to death while I would be more than willing to read a book with an original or little used monster..

And finally I have to say I loved the book for the tidbits and story-leads the author presented in her works fired up my own imagination. I am truly no horror fiction author but my mind was judging the pieces offered then trying to run away with it.

This book is for those who are dabbling in H/DF or those who are actually trying to break in thus I strongly recommend this book as a basis. And to any other author whether you are horror or non-horror this book would be a helpful tool for you can switch out ideas, words and other horror-focused ideas to replace with any other genre, which in turn makes writing a bit easier for all.

Thank you Lilliann for giving me a chance to read then review your work for future audiences.

A fabulous collection of stories that will keep you riveted and reading, Run, is a collection of short tales that are alternately, disturbing, surprising and chilling. The authors in this collection have done a bang-up job of looking at the darker side of human nature. From crime fiction and espionage, to tales of psychological terror and even supernatural horror, this gem of a collection will appeal to a diverse variety of readers. These authors know their craft. The writing is polished and I was blown away by the twists and turns in several of the tales. Highly recommended! I look forward to reading more of their individual books.

Time to look at John Fioravanti’s book Reflections – Inspirational Quotes & Interpretations; published in late December last year. Have you read quotes from both classic and modern thinkers.. and wondered what they actually mean.. particularly to those of us living in this modern age?

reflections

About Reflections – Inspirational Quotes & Interpretations

Does this question engage you or take you out of your comfort zone? Does it put you on the spot? REFLECTIONS is award-winning author and former educator John Fioravanti’s answer.

Offering his interpretations of fifty quotes by contemporary and ancient thinkers alike, John dives deep below the surface of words and explores the deeper meanings that shape his view of the world.

Deeply personal and presented in a self-effacing manner, these self-aware reflections will encourage you to dig deep within yourself and to discover more about the underlying truths that guide you.

Without trumpets or fanfare of any kind, John Fioravanti aspires to inspire you!

One of the early reviews for the book

REFLECTIONS was a perfect book to read over the holidays. Each chapter focuses on an inspirational quote from such notable people as Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, and Anne Frank; and, because of this approach, the book can be read non-linearly. The reader can move from one reflection to another, as interest dictates.

There are 50 quotations included in the book, each of which author Fioravanti provides his interpretations, a practice he adopted for his weekly blog. His thoughts, measured and insightful, spur the reader to consider his or her own. This book earns my endorsement and support with Five well-deserved Stars.

One of my guests for the Book Reading at the Cafe starting in March is children’s author Bette A. Stevens.. She has an offer starting on Wednesday for her book Pure Trash.. so let’s take a look at the book first.

51td5gvajel-_uy250_About Pure Trash

It’s PURE TRASH (Historical Fiction/short story), a Compelling Prequel to the novel DOG BONE SOUP.

The year is 1955. Remember the Good Old Days? You know, the 1950s and ‘60s, when America was flying high. The All American Family lived a life filled with hopes and dreams and life’s necessities too. Shawn Daniels isn’t your typical American Boomer Boy. No, Shawn is a poor boy. He can’t join Boy Scouts or sports teams. There’s not even enough money for necessities. Besides, Shawn doesn’t have time for that. But when chores are done, there’s always fishing!

In this short story, Shawn and Willie Daniels are off on a Saturday adventure in search of trash to turn into treasure. It is going to be a great day. Shawn is sure of it. No school and no bullies to remind him that he’s not one of the crowd. This is a story about bullies and what it’s like to be bullied (and not just by kids). It may redefine your definition of bullying.

If you were a child who was thought of as “different” in some way, you know what bullying is about: torment, persecution, intimidation, to name a few of its synonyms. For Shawn and Willie, their difference was based upon the social status of a dysfunctional family and the alcoholism and abject poverty in which they grew up.

One of the reviews for Pure Trash

How can so much imagery fit in such a small space? A host of human emotions and an entire era are crammed within a handful of pages. What’s even more impressive, this is all accomplished from the point of view of a a simple boy.

This short story speaks volumes about Stevens’ writing skills and her ability to pick the seemingly insignificant details that make all the difference – such as the self-made metal basket on the hero’s bike, or the casual measuring of his father’s drunkenness level, in order to ascertain whether the old man is ready to take the boys fishing.

The hero’s voice is all the more poignant for his innocence. He knows what he loves and hates, but is content to describe; not judge. This makes Pure Trash all the more compelling, as any judging is left to the reader.

All in all, a powerful short story, and a great introduction to the novel.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New on the Shelves -A Sinister Six by Steve Boseley

new-on-the-shelves-update

Today I am welcoming Steve Boseley to the shelves of the bookstore. His latest release, A Sinister Six was published on February 6th.  A collection of six darkly disturbing stories.. a treasure trove for those of you who enjoy your stories edgy.

51s0ubycj2l-_uy250_

About the collection.

A Sinister Six’ is a collection of darkly disturbing stories, where the ordinary and mundane become extraordinary and fantastic. Come along, as we journey to the edges of reality and glimpse what lies just beyond our reach. Discover that nothing is quite what it seems, and explore the horrors that travel with us throughout our lives.

The characters you will meet within have been forced beyond the boundary of their reality and have encountered what lies beyond.

Die, Blossom Bloom is the story of TED HARRIS, an old man who feels a yawning chasm of grief and guilt from the loss of his wife and the way her life ended. Keeping these details secret leads him to commit acts he never thought himself capable of.

The Girl in the Park tells the tale of a boy who encounters an enigmatic young woman in the park. As he grows, he begins to fall in love with her, but it is only at the end of his life that he discovers how he can be with her.

A Snap of The Fingers asks the questions What would you do for a loved one? Would you die for them? Would you kill for them? Ten-year-old SETH ROGERS is asked that very question by a stranger that offers to save his mother from the cancer that is killing her.

The Photograph. A photograph is rediscovered decades after it was lost, only now the picture has several new faces in it, faces that were not there when it was taken.

The Book demands to be read. It needs to be read. Doctor MONTE HILTON is tasked with helping a man that believes The Book is urging him to read it and that the very existence of our universe is in danger if he does.

I’m Watching You is the story of one man’s descent into insanity. Long hours and late nights force MIKE to question what is real and what is imagined. Some people can only be pushed so far before something breaks.

**Please note – the paperback version of ‘A Sinister Six’ contains and additional TWO stories***

An early review.

Six incredible stories! 1 Feb. 2017 By Amy’s Bookshelf Reviews Published on Amazon.com

There are six incredible, magnificent, and horrifying stories. Yes, they truly are sinister. Not just the stories. Not just the characters. But the way the stories bring in the reader and add twists. Boseley is a master of designing these perfectly horrid stories, and brings the reader into his mind. I was intrigued when I saw the quote from Poe in the beginning of the book, and I can see why. There is a lot of “Poe”-ishness within this story. The titles of the stories just bring you in and then … the story keeps you shivering. “He could hear her voice, muffled by the pillow, which he tried to block out and failed. Her voice weakened and then was silent.”

I received this book free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. ~Amy’s Bookshelf Reviews
