Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – Author Update #Reviews – Vashti-Quiroz-Vega, Tony Riches, Iain Kelly and Sacha Black

Welcome to the second edition of the author update this week.. and the first author with a recent review is Vashti Quiroz-Vega for Son of the Serpent (Fantasy Angels Series)

About Son of the Serpent

In Son of the Serpent, award-winning author Vashti Quiroz-Vega crafts another fascinating glimpse into the dark, compelling world of fallen angels and demons, revealing more about their untold stories.

The war in heaven might be over, but the ambitions of the fallen angel Lilith reach far across the roots of history. Will there be a being powerful enough to stop her evil influence before the destruction of mankind?

Dracúl knows he is the son of Satan, but the rest of his memory has been taken from him. Alone and frightened, he awakens in a forest, beginning a quest to piece together who he is. The world he encounters is cruel, but he yearns to belong and find companionship. With each step he takes, another missing piece of his memory falls into place, revealing a truth that is ever more troubling . . .

A truth that will turn his quest for meaning into one fueled by the hot-blooded thirst for revenge. A truth that leads him to Lilith, the most wicked and ruthless of fallen angels and one he soon will have every reason to hate. His quest will consume him, perhaps ruin his life, but somehow Dracúl is determined to find both belonging and vengeance—to be good, in spite of his evil nature and the dark secrets that haunt him every step of the way.

One of the recent reviews for the book

Wendy Scott Multi-Award Winning Author 4.0 out of 5 stars Devilishly depraved April 1, 2019

In book one, God expelled Lilith from heaven – for very good reasons! But Lilith is more slippery than a saw-scaled viper lathered in olive oil. A complex and cruel character, the depths of her depravity is deeper than the bottomless pits of hell. Her son, Dracul, riles against his evil heritage, intent on tracking Lilith down and claiming his vengeance. This author has taken biblical events and rewritten them in her own unique style – the ancient world through her eyes is a riveting experience. As an author, I paused more than once to admire the prose, a particular phrase or word choice which was so cleverly crafted I experience author-envy (I wish I’d written that!). Book two in the Fantasy Angels Series, Son of Serpent, is a distinctively dark and twisted tale suitable for mature readers.

The next author with a recent review for his latest historical novel is Tony Riches for Brandon Tudor Night

About Brandon: Tudor Knight

From the author of the international best-selling Tudor Trilogy:

Handsome, charismatic and a champion jouster, Sir Charles Brandon is the epitome of a Tudor Knight. A favourite of King Henry VIII, Brandon has a secret. He has fallen in love with Henry’s sister, Mary Tudor, the beautiful widowed Queen of France, and risks everything to marry her without the King’s consent.

Brandon becomes Duke of Suffolk, but his loyalty is tested fighting Henry’s wars in France. Mary’s public support for Queen Catherine of Aragon brings Brandon into dangerous conflict with the ambitious Boleyn family and the king’s new right-hand man, Thomas Cromwell.

Torn between duty to his family and loyalty to the king, Brandon faces an impossible decision: can he accept Anne Boleyn as his new queen?

One of the recent reviews for the book

We first meet Charles Brandon as a twenty-one year old, newly appointed to the King’s Spears. His father, who was Henry Tudor’s standard bearer, died during the Battle of Bosworth, and Brandon had been brought up at the court of Henry Vll. He became good friends with the young Prince Harry, who was later crowned Henry VIII, teaching him to joust and was one of his favoured group of courtiers.

Always finding himself lacking funds, Brandon incurred huge debts from borrowing money, primarily from Thomas Wolsey and afterwards Thomas Cromwell. His first marriage was a means to an end—Lady Margaret Mortimer had wealth and much land.

I knew next to nothing about Charles Brandon, really only that he married Mary Tudor. It was interesting to follow his story and the research was obviously detailed. Brandon worked his way up the ranks until he became Duke of Suffolk. He and Mary took a huge risk by getting married before asking Henry’s consent, especially after Brandon had been warned not to unleash his charm upon Mary. Henry had someone in mind for his sister for political reasons. Incurring his wrath was a dangerous thing and could be classed as treason. As it was, Henry made his displeasure felt by excluding them from court and keeping his distance for a while.

Mary’s unwavering and public support of Queen Catherine of Aragon caused friction between Brandon and the Boleyn family, whose fortunes were on the rise, not to mention Henry’s new chief advisor, Thomas Cromwell. Brandon had to keep in mind his responsibilities to his family as well as loyalty to Henry when it became obvious Ann Boleyn would be the next queen.

The story centres around Brandon and I enjoyed the way Tony Riches incorporates details of life at court with all its intrigue and danger into the narrative. Brandon is a well fleshed out character who managed to navigate his way through the unpredictability of court politics. He led a full life and was lucky enough to marry twice for love.

I chose to read and review Brandon – Tudor Knight for Rosie Amber’s book review team, based on a digital copy kindly supplied by the author.

Now a recent review for the political dystopian thriller,  A Justified State by Iain Kelly

About A Justified State

In the future, The State is ruled by the socially reformist Central Party Alliance. Poverty and homelessness have been eradicated, but overpopulation, an energy crisis and an ongoing overseas war are threatening the stability of the country. When a local politician is assassinated, Detective Danny Samson finds himself thrust into the middle of the investigation.

Still grieving for his dead wife and children, Danny tracks down the assassin, an ex-military sniper called Gabriella, only to discover she may not be the real villain. The secret behind the murder of one politician may bring down the entire ruling Party, and Danny soon learns those in power will go to any lengths to protect The State. Joining forces with Gabriella and the mysterious government agent Phillips, Danny must unearth the truth and bring the guilty to justice, before they catch up with him first.

One of the recent reviews for the book

At the heart of this novel is a fast-paced crime story. It is set in the near future and should be a warning to us all, that if we are not careful, this is what will become of the world! The low resources leading to government intervention, uniform housing, synthetic food rations and self-driving cars provide the thought-provoking scene. The characters are well-penned and believable. The plot intrigued me and I was, genuinely, eager to find out what happened next.I look forward to reading a sequel and would recommend this to all.

julie renouf 5.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading 10 January 2019

Of course as a devotee of all things Tudor,I knew a little of Charles Brandon and his dynasty, so purchased this book as a way of broadening my knowledge. It’s an easy read ,well researched and written, and the author has done his homework on the elusive Brandon. It shows the see sawing Tudor court in all its glory, and how difficult it must have been to walk the line between the ever changing Henry and your own standards. Enjoyed it so will give the author’s other books a read.

One of the recent reviews for the book

I liked this inventive political/crime thriller for its pacey narrative. The story is set in a futuristic era, where the State provides prolonged youthfulness, lack of disease, self-driving cars, plenty of synthetic food. Too good to be true ? Through the eyes of the fair, compassionate detective Danny, we experience a gradual reveal of the systemic State insiders’ corruption and cruelty. Beneath the bland, sterile futuristic city -scapes,lies an underbelly of the old city structure, where subversion is alive. Definitely a good read.

If You Love Me I’m Yours by bestselling author of Ninja School Mum, Lizzie Chantree and here is a recent review for the book.

About the book

‘If you love me, I’m yours…’

Maud didn’t mind being boring, not really. She had a sensible job, clothes, and love life… if you counted an overbearing ex who had thanked her, rolled over and was snoring before she even realised he’d begun! She could tolerate not fulfilling her dreams, if her parents would pay her one compliment about the only thing she was passionate about in life: her art.

Dot should have fit in with her flamboyant and slightly eccentric family of talented artists, but somehow, she was an anomaly who couldn’t paint. She tried hard to be part of their world by becoming an art agent extraordinaire, but she dreamed of finding her own voice.

Dot’s brother Nate, a smoulderingly sexy and famous artist, was adored by everyone. His creative talent left them in awe of his ability to capture such passion on canvas. Women worshipped him, and even Dot’s friend Maud flushed and bumped into things when he walked into a room, but a tragic event in his past had left him emotionally and physically scarred, and reluctant to face the world again.

Someone was leaving exquisite little paintings on park benches, with a tag saying, ‘If you love me, I’m yours’. The art was so fresh and cutting-edge, that it generated a media frenzy and a scramble to discover where the mystery artist could be hiding. The revelation of who the prodigious artist was interlinked Maud, Dot and Nate’s lives forever, but their worlds came crashing down.

Were bonds of friendship, love and loyalty strong enough to withstand fame, success and scandal?

One of the recent reviews for the book

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. There are many story lines to this book – it is as much a “chick lit” book as it is a romance. As a romance, it brings together two people, Maud and Nate, over their love of art. But it is also a book about friendship, across several relationships in the book but largely Maud and Dot. And it is a book about learning to be ok with who you are, whether others, especially family members, accept it or not. Maud and Dot both struggle to fit in with their family members and truly be who they want to be. The romantic part is almost downplayed in that respect. This is a sweet romance, no explicit sex scenes, for those who are looking for that type of book.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New Book on the Shelves for Christmas – #Dystopian #Thriller A Justified State by Iain Kelly

Very pleased to welcome a new author to the Cafe and Bookstore with his latest book, Iain Kelly with A Justified State.

One of the early reviews for the book

There are plenty of dystopian thrillers around, but few have such thorough and well considered world building as Iain Kelly’s A Justified State.

The setting is somewhere in the near future, a world where resources are running so low and nature has been so ravaged by man, humanity is actually banned from interacting with it, herded instead into state provided block housing, kept alive into extended old age by medical intervention, surviving on meagre rations. Alcohol and cigarettes are banned, the power keeps going out and their hasn’t been an open election in years.

Into this mess steps our protagonist, washed up detective Danny Samson, who suddenly finds he has the case of his career on his hands – one that might cost him his life.

I don’t want to share any spoilers, but the world created is extraordinary – alien but frighteningly close to our own in light of current environmental and social issues. This is where we could be in forty years time – if we’re lucky. The action is pacy and exciting, the characters fleshed out, nuanced and believable, the mystery over the assassination is genuinely intriguing and alarming. It drew me in and made me want to find out more – always the sign of a good read! I’d love to read more by this author.

About Iain Kelly

I live in East Kilbride, near Glasgow in Scotland, where I spend most all my time raising my twin son and daughter. In my spare time I work as an editor of television programmes for the BBC. When I’m not doing either of those things I write stories, read stories and watch stories.

My first novel, A Justified State, was published in late 2018, and a collection of early short pieces, Collected Sketches, was published in late 2016.

The main purpose of this blog is to post my fiction writing. In the past I have reviewed films and books and I may carry on doing the occasional bit of that too. Thanks for taking the time to read anything, all comments, shares and likes are welcome and I hope you enjoy.
