Welcome to the first of this week’s author update with recent reviews for authors in the Cafe and Bookstore.

The first author with a recent review is J.P. McLean for Book 6 of The Gift Legacy  – Wings of Prey.

About the book

A dead man’s warning. A lost plane wreck. A buried truth.

A dire warning from beyond the grave leaves Emelynn Taylor questioning her loyalties. Did someone she loves commit an unforgivable act of treachery? In her quest for answers, Emelynn opens a painful cold case knowing its resolution could destroy two families.

What she finds tests Emelynn’s integrity as the leadership changes hands within the Tribunal Novem, the powerful body that rules her kind. When confronted with betrayal and lies, Emelynn must follow her moral compass, even if it means losing the man she loves and alienating her Flier friends.

And when the terrible truth is unearthed, Emelynn is set on a collision course with two titans and a battle she can’t possibly win.

The sixth book in The Gift Legacy series, Wings of Prey is a thriller that skirts the edges of reality in a world within our own. Hold on tight and escape the ordinary: take flight with Emelynn Taylor.

A recent review for the book on Goodreads

May 10, 2019 Karen rated it Five Stars

This book reunites the readers with Emelynn Taylor; together with Sam, she needs to find the truth about a plane crash – at all cost.

With “Wings of Prey”, J. P. McLean has once again created a thrilling combination of mystery, paranormal, urban fantasy, and a touch of romance with steamy situations. It is a very compelling read centred on Emelynn, drawing you close to her. J. P. McLean paints a clear picture of the main characters’ mindsets while the story evolves. In this sixth even more thrilling story, I was again very close to Em – again an invisible friend and ally; trying to find the truth with her. Emelynn is complex, the other characters are also skillfully elaborated and of sufficient depth, believable with their flaws and virtues. The story is a very nicely woven combination of several genres, has a wonderful flow; it was easy to get hooked. I had a great time reading “Wings of Prey”. Reading the final book in a series can be sad; in this series, it was extremely hard to let go – it is never easy to say goodbye to persons you became close to. I am going to miss this remarkable series and its protagonists.

This is a book for you if you like excellent story-telling, mysteries or paranormal romance with a very urban touch and believable characters, some strewn in steamy situations, and some violent events. The stunning sixth and last book in The Gift Legacy series!
Highly recommended! A series to read again

The next author is Sally Harris who has received some great reviews for her debut novel Haverscroft.

About the Book

Kate Keeling leaves all she knows and moves to Haverscroft House in an attempt to salvage her marriage. Little does she realise, Haverscroft’s dark secrets will drive her to question her sanity, her husband and fatally engulf her family unless she can stop the past repeating itself. Can Kate keep her children safe and escape Haverscroft in time, even if it will end her marriage?

Haverscroft is a gripping and chilling dark tale, a modern ghost story that will keep you turning its pages late into the night.

One of the early recent for the book

I love a good ghost story, and also the effortless blend of personal drama and magic realism displayed in the best of Graham Joyce’s novels. Haverscoft brings these two elements together in a hugely enjoyable book which, with its roots in the tradition of classic haunted house tales (bumps, knocking and mysterious happenings with doors), tells a layered tale of a precarious marriage which could well do without what’s about to happen…

The next author with a new review is Marcia Meara for The Emissary – A Riverbend Spinoff Novella which follows the story of a previous character in the series.

About The Emissary

Was Gabe Angelino, the mysterious truck driver in Finding Hunter: Riverbend Book 2, really an angel, as Willow Green believes? Or was he simply a good man, determined to help a stranger in need? Find out, as author Marcia Meara reveals the truth in the first Riverbend spinoff novella, The Emissary.

An angel’s work is never done—that’s part of the gig. But angels hadn’t been created to deal with such a vastly over-populated planet, rife with misery, suffering, and general chaos. Helping souls in peril has become a nearly impossible job, and even angelic tempers are frayed.

The archangel Azrael has had enough. He believes he’s found a way to ease their burden while saving jeopardized humans, too—hired help.

When Jake Daughtry lost his life rescuing a total stranger from certain death, he was on the fast track to Heaven. But that was before Azrael pulled him right out of line at the Pearly Gates. Now, as an Emissary to the Angels, Jake is taking to the highway in a quest to help souls in trouble. But the innate stubbornness of human beings bent on self-destruction is a challenge unlike any he’s ever faced.

It’s up to Jake and Azrael to bridge the gap between humans and angels. Will they ever convince the Council of Angels this endeavor is worthwhile? Can Jake figure out how to play by Azrael’s complicated rules? Will Azrael ever master the use of contractions in general conversation?

To find out the answers, hop on board Jake’s big red-and-white semi and travel the roads from the Florida Keys to north Georgia on an adventure that will make you laugh hard and cry even harder.

One of the recent reviews for the book

This was an entertaining novella which can be a stand alone book. I did not read the Riverbend Series and still enjoyed this story. There are a myriad of emotions that are displayed in this tale about a man, Jake, who becomes an emissary to the angel, Azrael. He is enlisted to aid Azrael in helping humans who are troubled and in need.Marcia Meara has created well-defined characters who draw the reader in as they feel pain, angst, happiness, or sorrow. This is a creative piece that makes the reader believe that maybe this is all possible.

I was disappointed when the story ended and will have to pick up the next book to learn more about these characters. When a writer can endear her readers to her characters and story line enough that they care about their outcome, then she has successfully created a delightful book. I look forward to more books by this author.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New book on the shelves – Wings of Prey – Book 6 The Gift Legacy by J.P. McLean

Congratulations to J.P. McLean who has recently published Book 6 of The Gift Legacy  – Wings of Prey.

The sixth book in The Gift Legacy series, Wings of Prey is a thriller that skirts the edges of reality in a world within our own. Hold on tight and escape the ordinary: take flight with Emelynn Taylor.

An early review for the book

I was reading Wings of Prey, the last book in The Gift Legacy, with enjoyment mixed with that specific sadness we sometimes feel when the time comes to say goodbye to our fictional friends. Since Book 1, Secret Sky, I’ve been so absorbed with the story and its characters that, at one moment, they had stopped being fiction and moved into the place of my intimate reality.

Writing the last book in a series can be tricky, but J.P. McLean did it with the ease, elegance and skills of a gifted, genuine storyteller. Sometimes authors struggle to maintain the same quality level of the individual books within a series, but she avoided every trap and maintained the high standards she’d set with the first book. All the key elements in each of the installments, including Wings of Prey, are consistently up to the mark: the plot, the characters’ development, the settings, the dialogue, the tone, the voice… It’s a marvelous achievement, even more so since The Gift Legacy series is, in fact, one story, focused on the same characters and a singular, although multifaceted, main conflict.

The Gift Legacy is one of my favorite urban fantasy series; I’ve said this more than once. It stands shoulder-to-shoulder with some pretty big names. Not only that, but I can list, off the top of my head, quite a few well-known authors of well-known fantasy series who, unlike J.P. McLean, have dropped the ball at some point. The Gift Legacy as a series, as well as each of its six parts, possesses a fine balance and inner harmony that keeps all its pieces seamlessly together. The lines between the magical and the real are melted in the best posible way – the magic is so conceivable that it feels real, and the reality is often beautifully magical.

In the end, it was one particular aspect of that inner equilibrium in Wings of Prey that makes my departure from J.P. McLean’s words easier. The inevitable end was counterbalanced with a great, satisfactory closure.

The six books of The Gift Legacy are definitively keepers. I will read them again. I highly recommend this series to everyone who loves (urban and other) fantasies, but not only to them. The reluctant and unsure fantasy readers (adult, I must add; these books are too sexy for YA readership) may easily change their mind about this genre after reading J.P. McLean’s books.

About J.P. Mclean

JP (Jo-Anne) McLean writes contemporary fantasy thrillers with a provocative edge. She is best known for The Gift Legacy series. The first book of the series received Honourable Mention at the Whistler Independent Book Awards. Reviewers call the series addictive, smart and fun.

Her books include endorsements from Ethel Wilson fiction prize winner, Jennifer Manuel, and Globe and Mail bestselling author, Elinor Florence, among others. The series has been described as fantasy light and is a good introduction to the genre for the uninitiated.

Jo-Anne neglects the gardens and housework to write full time from her home on Denman Island, off of Canada’s west coast. She writes best when she’s within sight and sound of water, even if it’s just a fountain, and hopes never to stop reading, writing or imagining the impossible.

Guest Posts Revisited Cook From Scratch with Author J.P.Mclean – Roasted Tomato Sauce

Another series that I would like to repeat is the original Cook from Scratch back in 2014 as the dishes are just as delicious and back then they were aimed at a much smaller audience.

This week the cook from scratch is a dish that I refer to as ‘red gold’… It can be used as a wonderful pasta sauce but also as the base for many more dishes.. I have a version (not as delicious as this sounds) that I cook up in bulk and store in the freezer in two portion containers. Not only do I use a couple of times a week in my everyday cooking but also very useful to have on hand when visitors drop by unexpectedly.

Cooked tomato is one of the exceptions when it comes to nutritional benefits.  The lycopene which is the most beneficial ingredient in the tomato is more potent when cooked than when fresh.  Add in the garlic and olive oil and this sauce with rice or pasta is packed full of goodness.

My guest today is J.P McLean (Jo-Anne) who has her recipe for roasted tomato sauce down to a fine art.

Jo-Anne is the author of The Gift Legacy. A Thriller that will leave you believing the impossible and wary of the night skies.

About Book 1 – The Gift – Awakening.

Every Gift has its Price . . .

When Emelynn Taylor accepts a mysterious gift from a stranger, her life alters irrevocably. Haunted by terrifying abilities she can’t control, Emelynn returns to her abandoned home on the British Columbia coast where she vows to take command of her unruly gift. A near-fatal miscalculation drops her into the hands of a man who takes her breath away and an underground society who share the gift; but as they steer her into unknown territory, secrets surface and conspiracies are revealed. Will Emelynn master her dangerous gift and escape the unfolding web of perils before they take her life?

A fantasy thriller that will leave you believing the impossible and wary of the night skies.

If you’re new to the fantasy genre, this is a good place to start. The Gift Legacy crosses genres. It’s light on fantasy, heavy on thriller, with a healthy undercurrent of action and adventure. The books have been described as smart, contemporary and addictive.

One of the recent reviews for the book

The Gift Awakening is a fantasy that starts off slowly and gains momentum. The main protagonist, Emelynn, knows she is different but doesn’t realize just how unusual her gifted talents are.

She was just a normal preteen when a woman visited her on the beach near her home and bestowed a strange gift upon her. Odd things begin to happen to her and when she is seen by a doctor after one of these peculiar episodes he makes her aware of what is happening to her.

When a handsome stranger comes into her life Emelynn is tossed into more turmoil than she could ever imagine. This story continued to intrigue me and I couldn’t put it down for long.

This author has a winning series that is sure to get the attention of fantasy lovers out there. I look forward to the next books in this gripping series.

Now time for Jo-Anne’s delicious and easy to make tomato sauce.

Roasted Tomato Sauce

I make this at the end of the tomato season to fill my freezer with read-to-use tomato sauce. It’s suitable for use as a base for spaghetti sauce, chili and soup, or for use in stuffed peppers or cabbage rolls. It’s quite flexible and can be adjusted to taste, adding onions or peppers or other spices. I’ve never weighed or measured the amount of tomatoes, I simply fill my roaster, and it’s one that fits an 18-20lb turkey.

Ingredients
Fresh tomatoes washed and quartered.
A whole head of garlic, peeled
¼ cup olive oil and salt to taste.

Method
Pile a large roaster with the tomatoes and garlic. Drizzle oil over top and sprinkle with salt.
Roast in a 350 oven for 4-5 hours, stirring every hour or so until reduced to 1/3 original volume.
The tomato skins will blacken, which is good – it adds flavour. Let the mixture cool.

You can either process the sauce with a food processor, or if you prefer to remove the skins and seeds entirely, you can process it with a European Tomato Press, known in our house as the Wapper because of the noise it makes when you operate it. I put the pulp through twice to get all the yummy goodness out.

Can be used immediately or frozen.
