Smorgasbord Book Reviews – #Romance – Skating on Thin Ice (The Men of Warhawks #1) by USA Today Bestselling author Jacquie Biggar

Delighted to share my review for Skating on Thin Ice (The Men of Warhawks #1) by USA Today Bestselling author Jacquie Biggar.

About Skating on Thin Ice

Sam Walters has made a deal with the devil.

In order to win a much-needed contract as physical therapist to one of the NHL’s leading hockey teams, Sam must delay the recovery of their sniper, Mac Wanowski. The trouble is, the more she gets to know the taciturn hockey player, the more she aches to help him.

Mac ‘The Hammer’ Wanowski chased the Stanley Cup dream for too many years. Last time he was close it had cost him his wife. As injuries continue to plague the team, Mac works to catch a killer and keep the woman he’s come to love from the hands of a madman.

Hockey can be a dangerous sport, especially when millions of dollars are at stake.

My review for the book

Jacquie Biggar certainly has a way with words and the skill to create hot and attractive characters in her stories. And this book is no exception with the cynical and driven Mac Wanowski, determined to bury the tragic past in his fast paced career as captain of the Victoria War Hawks hockey team. And Sam, a reserved but determined young woman who has to deal with this stubborn and reclusive sport’s star.

With an injury threatening his participation in the play offs, Mac reluctantly agrees to the personal attention of a physical therapist recommended by the team doctor.at his beautiful mountain retreat. But Sam is definitely not the male  therapist Mac was expecting and sparks fly from their first meeting. Not everyone wants the team’s star player to recover and it is not until the end that we find out who is behind the plot.  And let me warn you it is not who you expect.

In the meantime we have the heat of relationship that is developing between Mac and Sam and the freezing temperatures of a snow laden mountain storm that isolates the two of them at the mercy of hired thugs.  There is passion, danger and surprises and of course a very healthy dollop of romance.

Something to warm you up during the long, dark, cold evenings ahead this winter. Very enjoyable.

Smorgasbord Posts from Your Archives – #PotLuck – Sunday #Recipes #Baking up Memories Banana Bread by Jacquie Biggar

Welcome to the series of Posts from Your Archives, where bloggers put their trust in me. In this series, I dive into a blogger’s archives and select four posts to share here to my audience.

Time for the final post from the archives of USA Today bestselling author Jacquie Biggar and this week another recipe from Jacquie that brings back memories..also a link to a festive cookbook that looks great.

Are you a baker?

For me, baking is like pulling teeth, something to be avoided as long as possible. But I do like the heavenly scent of baking in the oven and my family appreciates when I take the time to try, so I’m going to start a Sunday post with #Family #recipes that are as close to fail-safe as possible!

Today’s recipe comes from my husband’s side of the family. My S-I-L makes the best banana bread I’ve ever tasted, moist, flavorful, and decadent!

Here’s her recipe:

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.

Ingredients.

  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup (3 med) very ripe, mushy bananas
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cups choc chips

Method

  • Cream butter and sugar in medium sized bowl. Beat in 2 eggs until smooth. Add bananas and blend. (If doing by hand, I recommend a potato masher. It dissolves the banana lumps like magic!)
  • In a second bowl (I don’t like dishes so I add to my first bowl. Just don’t stir yet :)) stir flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and chocolate chips. Add to banana mixture and stir just to moisten (Now you can mix the ingredients!)
  • Grease a loaf pan approx: 9x5x3 size. (I recommend the dark pans. I have an old, beaten up one that came from my grandma. It works like a charm)
  • Add the mixture to the pan and bake for about one hour. You can use a toothpick to test for doneness. Stick it in the top of the loaf, if it comes out clean you’re set.
  • Let the pan sit on a rack for ten minutes before removing. Use a table knife to score the edge away from the pan, turn it over on a plate, tap the bottom and it should (fingers crossed) release cleanly from the cookware.
  • Let cool completely before wrapping.

Here’s a picture of the recipe I’ve been using. You can see why I needed to set up these posts. I can barely read it anymore! lol

Yay, the timer went off just as I was finishing this post, so I can show you the finished product.

uw4qrkc5riokbnqmeyhpw.jpg

Do you know what I see when I look at this beaten up old pan filled with homemade deliciousness?

I see my grandma baking bread and using this very pan to cook it with. I see my mom using this pan to make lemon poppyseed loaves (future recipe to share!) for Farmer’s Market. I see my S-I-L joking about my lack of baking skills and writing out this recipe from her grandmother so I could have that feeling of accomplishment.

I see… Love

That Banana

A selection of  books by Jacquie Biggar

One of the recent reviews for Skating on Thin Ice

This book is the perfect mixture of romance with an action packed story line to keep you turning the pages. The author does a great job of drawing the reader into the world of ice hockey and the murky world of match fixing and deals with the mob. Mac Wanowski is a champion ice hockey player and, with him on board, his team looks set to win the season. This does not suit everyone and Mac is seriously injured while playing in a match two weeks before the final. He is sent away to a remote cabin in the mountains to heal. The team’s doctor delivers his niece, Sam, a physical therapist who desperately needs a break, to assist Mac with a speedy recovery. Little does he know that she has been offered the opportunity to obtain a contract as the physical therapist to Mac’s team but, in return, she must slow down his recovery.

When Sam meets Mac her soft heart quickly goes out to him, especially when she learns of the loss of his wife and unborn baby in a terrible accident a few years previously. Sam is also attracted to the taciturn hockey star and she can sense it is reciprocated. Sam makes a decision to try to help Mac and ensure that he is able to play in the final match of the season but she is unaware that there are other, much more dangerous people lurking, who are determined to keep Mac off the ice.

I enjoyed the character of smolderingly sexy Mac, with his heartbreaking past, and the sweet and big hearted, Sam, with her history of financial anxiety and determination to succeed in a male dominated profession.

An entertaining and easy read with a great twist at the end and lots of romantic ups and downs to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Time for the third post from the archives of USA Today bestselling author Jacquie Biggar. If you head over to Jacquie’s blog you will find a great many guest posts from visiting authors and book reviews… I have selected a more recent post so that the new is still fresh… not quite as stylish as Jacquie’s post……..

Guest Posting with Jacquie Biggar – @RoxanneStClair New York Times Bestselling Author

New York Times bestselling author Roxanne St. Claire is kicking off a brand new series and we couldn’t be more excited about it! Check out the cover for HOT UNDER THE COLLAR and be on the lookout for it soon!

About Hot Under the Collar

Firefighter Braden Mahoney is devastated when his beloved Weimaraner, Jelly Bean, fails the canine arson investigator test. Faced with the challenge of raising the money for advanced training, it’s Braden’s sweet grandmother and her best friend who suggest he use the services of the new event planner in town. Not that he needs a push in Cassie Santorini’s direction. Ever since she arrived, Braden has had his eye on the sassy Greek goddess…and can’t stop thinking about getting the rest of him on her, too.

Cassie has spent years putting family first, even moving to Bitter Bark when her mother falls in love with the local veterinarian. Having a huge new extended “family” is fun, especially when one smokeshow of a firefighter attends the gatherings, but Cassie has no plans to remain in this small town. She’s ready to pursue her big city dreams. But when Braden asks for an assist for his precious pup, Cassie agrees to help him set up a town-wide scavenger hunt. It isn’t exactly a hardship to be around those blue eyes and brawny shoulders, especially since they both agree everything – even the undeniable sparks that crackle between them – is temporary.

But when temporary gets complicated by feelings that might lead to forever, Braden and Cassie start to question the direction they’re headed. Should they follow their dreams…or their hearts? It’ll take a dog with a bad nose and a sweet soul, two particularly meddlesome grandmas, and some help from the clan that loves them to make sure Cassie and Braden follow the clues and find their way to each other’s arms.

Just like The Dogfather, the covers of The Dogmothers were all photographed at Alaqua Animal Refuge in Florida using rescue dogs and local heroes, and a portion of the first month’s sales of every book is donated to that amazing organization

About the Dogmothers series

Daniel Kilcannon, a widower with six unmarried kids, has not only orchestrated wonderfully happy endings for all his offspring…he’s found one of his own. That leaves his grown nieces and nephews plus his adult stepkids all in need of their own magical romances. Is The Dogfather too preoccupied with his new lady love to pull the strings and make the matches? Maybe. But there’s a new team in town and these two might be polar opposites in life but they are lined up in love. One grandmother has the steel spine of a Greek warrior, the other has the heart of an Irish poet. Together, along with two darling dachshunds, these Dogmothers won’t stop until all nine of their grandchildren are hooked, hitched, and happy.

When Agnes Santorini arrives in Bitter Bark, she has something to prove. The notoriously nasty Greek grandma seeks to show her growing family that she’s an all new Yiayia, inside and out. At the same time, Finola Kilcannon, the beloved octogenarian Irish blogger, knows that her role as the mistress of Waterford Farm is now in the hands of her son’s fiancée, and it’s time for Gramma Finnie to start the next chapter in her life. It doesn’t take long for these ladies to realize that they are stronger, better, and way more powerful together than apart, so they move into a Victorian that’s aging as gracefully as they are, and get to work. It takes a wee bit of meddling, a dash of manipulation, and plenty of help from man’s best friend, but the Dogmothers soon become as good as their predecessor, the Dogfather, at orchestrating a happily ever after.

In this new spin-off series, there’s laughter, love, heartache, hope, and happy endings in store for the Mahoney, Santorini, and, of course, the Kilcannon clans. With nine full length novels planned, plus a holiday novella every year, readers are in for a treat that will take them through 2021! Fans of The Dogfather series will find the same level of emotional intensity, familiar family connections and characters, and, of course, an unforgettable dog at the very heart of every story.

One of the recent reviews for The Beast Within

Apr 17, 2019 Anita Dawes rated it Five Stars

I found the opening paragraph of The Beast Within painful to read, but it did set the tone for the rest of the book very well.

I love a good mystery thriller, and the premise for this book promised to tick all of my boxes. It has a strong emotional and romantic element, warring guardian angels and an evil serial killer, all combining into one of the best suspense novels I have read in a while.

Add to all of that, an unrelenting pace, beautifully descriptive writing and multiple storylines, in short, a book that will not allow you to stop reading.

The Beast Within is the first of Jacquie Biggar’s books I have read, and it didn’t take me long to realise I would have benefitted from reading the first book in the Mended Souls trilogy. The story itself stands alone, I just felt the need to know the characters a little better.

I will be reading the first book in this trilogy while I await the conclusion to this amazing series…

Time for the second post from the archives of USA Today bestselling author Jacquie Biggar.  This week I share a delicious recipe that can be adapted for everyone’s tastes and would make a great starter or main course.

Sunday #Soup #Cooking up Memories by Jacquie Biggar

Do you love homemade soup?

Maybe it’s because I owned a restaurant for thirteen years and as chief cook and bottle washer, made a LOT of soup, but I’m very fussy when we go out to eat. It amazes me how so many cooks can’t create a decent soup!

potatoes fun knife fork

I’m trained in the house of mom 🙂

She took pity on me and taught me the rudimentary necessities needed to make a delicious base that will work for 99% of the soups you cook.

The secret?

Onions, carrots, celery. Yep, it’s that easy.

Today, I’m going to share my recipe for Cream of Potato Soup.

Start with a good-sized pot, either a dutch oven or slow cooker if you prefer.

Add:

  • 1 large onion chopped fine
  • 3 med carrots chopped
  • 3 med celery chopped
  • 1 tbsp margarine or olive oil if preferred
  • Salt and pepper

Simmer together on med-low heat until onions are translucent

Further Ingredients:

  • 5 pounds potatoes- russet
  • 1 litre milk
  • 2-3 tbsp chicken soup base
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • shredded cheese (if preferred)

Preparation:

  1. Peel and chop into bite-size chunks 5 pounds of russet potatoes and rinse in pan of cool water. Drain.
  2. Add potatoes to pot, then fill to 1-1 1/2 inches above potatoes with water. Set pot to boil, adding salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Simmer for approx. half an hour or until potatoes are cooked.
  4. In a separate bowl, add 3 cups cold water and salt and pepper. Slowly mix in the flour stirring with a wisk to blend.
  5. Add chicken powder base and milk to soup. Stir and return to slow boil before adding the flour water until soup begins to thicken. Simmer ten minutes more for flavors to bind.
  6. Serve with a little shredded cheese on top.

The best thing about this soup is how easy you can change it up.

  • Add a can of clams for clam chowder
  • Frozen seafood medley for seafood chowder
  • Frozen fancy vegetable mix for Cream of vegetable soup
  • Cooked, chopped bacon for bacon and potato soup.
  • 2 Cans creamed corn for corn chowder

The choices are only limited by your imagination 🙂

Enjoy!

So much more than just Potato soup… adding one of those extra ingredients each time your prepare gives you soup for every day of the week. Thanks Jacquie.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New Book on the Shelves – #Romance – Skating on Thin Ice by Jacquie Biggar

Delighted to share the news of the latest release, Skating on Thin Ice by USA Today Bestselling author Jacquie Biggar. Currently at 99c/99p

One of the early reviews for the book

Jacquie Biggar has done it again. I have yet another new book boyfriend—Mac Wanowski, captain of the Victoria WarHawks hockey team.

Mac is the perfect guy—a body that won’t quit, a quick wit to match, intelligent, chivalrous, and just damaged enough to tug your heartstrings without wanting to bash him over the head for his stupidity. (Well, not too often, anyway.)

Sam is his perfect match—strong, smart, quick-tempered, sassy, big-hearted. And she has a past with true heartache and a present with secrets that make her just a little mysterious.

I read this story in one afternoon, quickly turning pages to see what would happen next. It’s not enough that they’re trapped together in an isolated cabin, both trying to ignore burgeoning feelings and protect their fragile hearts. That alone would be a story worth reading. But Mac is injured, and someone is trying to kill him. The situation was dicey from the first word to the mind-blowing climax.

The characters are people I’d love to meet in real life. The plot moves along at a blistering pace. And the settings are beautifully depicted—I could almost smell the cedar and wood smoke as I shivered from the cold.

If they gave a Stanley Cup to authors, Biggar would deserve one for this story.
