Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – Author Update #Reviews – Linda G. Hill, Lyn Horner and Chuck Jackson

Welcome to the first of the author updates this week, and the first author with a recent review is Linda G. Hill for her book The Magician’s Curse : A Paranormal Romance – The Great Dagmaru Book 1.

About the book

When Herman Anderson leaves home to make a better life for herself, she doesn’t expect to meet a tall, dark stranger with whom she’ll fall hopelessly in love.

Charming and mysterious, Stephen Dagmar is a stage magician seeking an assistant. The moment he sets eyes on Herman, he knows she’s the one. He brings her home to his Victorian mansion where they embark upon an extravagant romance. Yet a shadow hangs over their love. Will the curse on his family end Stephen and Herman’s happily ever after, before it really begins?

Amidst lace and leather, innocence and debauchery, The Magician’s Curse begins the Gothic tale of The Great Dagmaru. Magic and romance await.

One of the recent reviews for the book

Well-paced and engaging  on April 13, 2018

A magician with special powers struggles with a curse that’s been in his family for generations. The main character, an almost 18-year-old girl who falls in love with him, has her own life turned upside down as she navigates his strange world.

It’s more romance-heavy than I typically read, but the unveiling of the mysterious magician’s story kept me turning the pages. The plot is well-paced and the characters are engaging. The book comes to a satisfying conclusion but also sets up the stage for book two. All in all an enjoyable read.

Delighted to share one of the recent reviews for Chuck Jackson’s latest book that was released in April – Guilt – My Companion – A Journey of Healing.

About Guilt – My Companion

Guilt—My Companion is a story based on the author’s strength and recovery from a dysfunctional family. It begins in the ‘60s during a period filled with social and personal injustice. It tells the struggle of his conscience against societies’ ignorance and prejudice. It follows his journey to recoup from personal tragedy and grief. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Live is a journey, not a destination.”.

But for this story, the journey is the destinations he took. It wasn’t where he intended, and he had little control of the paths he took. Along those paths were heartaches and defeat. He found deception, prejudice, and hate. Lay in waiting was his companion, guilt; the robber of personal pleasure. Follow his story and discover when he conquered guilt, there was nothing inhibiting his self-growth and happiness.

One of the recent reviews for the book

I happen to know Chuck Jackson, and I consider him a fine man and a wonderful friend. How he has turned out so well with the traumas and betrayals he has endured is a miracle. How he could even write this book is amazing. It is a page turner and reminds me of the book, UNBROKEN, by Laura Hillenbrand. It is difficult to imagine that a boy, growing into manhood could even survive what Chuck endured. Given the times we live in with abuse and harassment so pervasive, Guilt–My Companion, is a book of encouragement for those who are going through terrible times with a dysfunctional family, workplace abuse or especially for those who have been told they were worthless and won’t ever amount to anything. It is an account of suffering, struggle, hopelessness that turns out to be a story of a tough life with a beautiful outcome. Inspirational!

A recent review for Vampyrie

A very different storyline in the vampire genre.Different, in a densely populated genre, is a good thing. But that’s not the main draw of this telling. It’s well-written and keeps you turning virtual pages. The characters are well-developed and believable. I knew I’d like it after the first few paragraphs. If you like a combination of horror, suspense and thriller, you’ll like this one. It even has a surprise twist that I didn’t see coming. I’m big on twists myself.

One of the recent reviews for Dancing to an Irish Reel

Beautiful  on March 26, 2018
This book has been on my TBR for a long time and I was happy to finally be able to read it. And all I can say is that I wish I had read it sooner. The book is almost lyrical in its language as the author discusses everything from fate to music to travel in Ireland. All of this is wrapped in a tentative romance between an American woman and an Irish man, and I don’t know when I last read a book that so perfectly captures the uncertainty of new romance. I highly recommend the book.

A recent review for Watching the Daisies

I was prompted by Brigid to write this review in her inimitably gentle manner as I had forgotten to do so when I read it. Brigid is one of those people you instinctively gravitate to, you know she is kind, compassionate and non-judgemental. She is a natural healer. She is also very creative. I immediately relax when I read her blogposts. She has a quiet style, she allows you to breathe. I could relate to much of what is written in her memoir: the music, the fashion, the loss, chronic illness, and the quest for personal healing through complementary therapies. I am proud to recommend her book.

An extract from a recent review for Murder at the Bijou

I am a big fan of Teagan Ríordáin Geneviene, as an author, a blogger, and I was lucky to discover her blog a few years back, and although I missed some of her early serials at the time of their initial conception, I have managed to catch up with them over time. I have also read her novel, Atonement, Tennessee (you can check my review here) and know that apart from an imagination that knows no bounds, and a love of period research and attention to detail, she has a way with words and can create magical characters that readers get to care for and make them live through situations that never fail to surprise us and keep us on tenterhooks.

I recommend this book to readers with a sense of fun and play who enjoy a fast and light mystery (cozy style. No explicit violence, although there is violence, no sex scenes) set in the Jazz Age (oh, don’t forget to follow the author’s blog if you enjoy that historical period as she shares a post on the subject every Wednesday), with charming characters and great food. And even if you don’t have a lot of time to read for long stretches at a time, as the serial was created to be read a chapter per week, it is very easy to follow the story and not get lost. So, there is no excuse!

Mum B&WMMVV eBook PNG SMALL

A recent review for the collection

These are stories or narrative poetry centered in Ireland written metrically with rhyme. The language flows well. Even when the stories seem dark the author’s heart shines through to light the way. For example, in “Ulter’s Shame”, a dark narrative with “blood stained footpaths and bullet spattered walls” we are not left with “screams” and “terror” but a resolution: “What matters is the depth of God’s sighs.”

She describes the people around her with kind brevity. The ending of “The Brownie Pack” states her love and humbly leaves it to God whether it is returned.

She describes the joyful and sorrowful mysteries of life. In “Tender to Touch” an old man buys a medicine from her. In his confusion he rubs it on his pained stomach rather than drinking it. Nonetheless, he’s cured and returns to thank her. In sadness, such as “Life!!”, she prays to God not to let the Devil win.

In the “The Lover” and “Kitty and Joe” we see death and love tied closely together and even though death wins in its ever objective way, I sense love redeeming each such victory as its own. This is a beautiful collection of very short stories or narrative poems that, perhaps because of their brevity, will linger in my mind enriching it.

A recent review for Death in a Dacron Sail.

A True Page-Turner! on January 14, 2018

My only complaint about this book is that it kept me up too late! Truly, it is a page-turner and will leave you wanting more. Rhe Brewster, the indomitable assistant to the police during a complex, historic murder investigation, expertly navigates the twists and turns of this journey while simultaneously attempting to resolve the dissolution of her marriage. Pregnant with her second child, Rhe manages to pursue clues, save lives, and figure her way out of situations with Houdini-like grace. N.A. Granger paints an indelible portrait of small-town life in rural Maine, with unforgettable characters who become her readers’ friends and foes. Read this book–you’ll be glad you did!

One of the recent reviews for Letters from an American Soldier

A very sweet story. on October 22, 2017

A real life love story through the eyes of a soldier during the Korean war. Letter by letter, the reader can imagine what life must have been like for those stationed far away from loved ones in a time when communication took days or weeks. Bill’s love and desire to be with his darling Nita is so sweetly and authentically expressed. It makes you want to read “just one more letter,” and before you know it, the book is as hard to put down as any fictional romance novel.

One of the recent reviews for Ravelled.

Whether it is writing for children or adults, Sue Hampton’s wit, wisdom, clarity, and tender affirmations suffuse ordinary—and sometimes not-so-ordinary—moments with an unforgettable luster. In her masterful collection, RAVELLED & OTHER STORIES, she explores a full range of ideas and characters, spanning from the friendship of an elder woman and her young, male driver, in “Away for Christmas,” to the lyrical fable that subverts popular beliefs of beauty and love, “The Brute and the Beast.”

Sue Hampton’s deftness can be further seen by the way she allows the readers enough room to interpret meaning for themselves. Her characters, whether lovely or unlovely, conjure a sense of compassion and connection. Through experiences of love, grief, loneliness, redemption, we are never left heartbroken, for every adversity either sparkles with humor or leads the character to something transcendent. A teenager falls in love with her teacher, a goddess-queen struggles with self-doubt, a newly divorced, older man engages in hilarious antics to escape feeling pathetic. One story leads to another, like rosary beads, holding the spectator to a simultaneous act of reading and meditation. This is a rare and satisfying collection that I am sure will teach me something new about writing, life, and the mind of an extraordinary author every time I re-read it. You simply must get a copy!

An extract from the most recent review for The Golden Age of Charli RSVP

While reading The Golden Age of Charli: RSVP, I moved from wanting Charli to be my aunt, to wanting Charli to be my best friend, and finally to wanting to BE Charli when I retire someday. I found the main character to be delightful, warm, honest and fun; and I appreciated her life’s motto – “press on” – and admired her determination to deepen her relationships with her husband (the newly-retired and golf-loving Pud) and with her many nieces and nephews. I also found myself drooling over the author’s abundant descriptions of food, wine, and cocktails – an unexpected and delicious part of this book! One month from now, my youngest will be heading off to college, so I ended up relating more than I expected I would to Charli’s empty-nest pursuits. Although my husband and I are far from retirement, I still felt a kinship with Charli, and I look forward to reading the next books in Jena Henry’s charming series!

A recent review for The Magician’s Curse.

A mysterious curse, a chance meeting on a train. The hauntingly beautiful Stephen Dagmar meets and instantly recognizes the love of his life on a train running away from her complicated family life.

This story challenges the reader to suspend disbelief and allow oneself to be drawn into the world of magic and the supernatural and accept it as reality.

The antagonist of the story, Nina Curry, has a level of vulnerability that makes her a compelling character to watch.

Herman Anderson, the heroine of this piece, is a blank sheet. Her age and inexperience make this the case more than anything else. She is acted upon rather than acts. As this is an ongoing series of works, I look forward to Herman’s development in the course of the story as things continue to unfold for this pair.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – Author Update – Mary Anne Edwards, Christoph Fischer, Claire Fullerton, Linda G. Hill

Welcome to Friday’s update and as you will have gathered I am not here at the moment. I will be back online next Wednesday but in the meantime I did not want to miss the weekly opportunity to promote authors in the bookstore.

I would be very grateful as I am not here to boost the post if you would share, thanks Sally

The first author with a new review is Mary Anne Edwards with Flirting with Time, Book Five in the Charlie McClung Mystery Series..

About the series

The Detective Charlie McClung mysteries are gripping yet tender novels. The books are set in the early 1980s, a time without cell phones or laptop computers making life more simple but solving crime more difficult. The plots are filled with twists and turns. The characters are believable yet complex. They are people you know or want to know.

About Flirting with Time – Book Five of the series

Do you know what it’s like to feel someone stalking you, shadowing every move you make?

For months now, Detective Charlie McClung and his wife have been tormented by an elusive figure, toying with them, almost daring the detective to catch him.

Any hopes that this is the work of a harmless prankster vanish when an innocent man is found brutally murdered.

McClung will go to any lengths to protect his family, but how far is too far?

A recent review for the book

My husband and I were married on Valentine’s Day and I get a few hearts around that time. Marian is getting more than a few and not around Valentine’s Day either. Charlie must try to solve one conundrum at a time. He must also try to do this quickly because someone seems to be after Marian. This was a very fast moving book with quite a few conundrums popping up. It turned into a game similar to Who Do You Trust. I enjoyed it and recommend it to those who like to try to solve the story before the end of the book. Bet you can’t do it!!!

Delighted to share the most recent review for Christoph Fischer:  The Sanctuary on Cayman Brac: Key to the Truth (Fraud or Miracle? Book 3)

About the book

Arpan has set up a training school and spiritual retreat on the small island in the Caribbean. Yet, the peaceful and quiet existence he has sought soon comes to an end. The arrival of Erica teaches him that lose ends won’t stop until they’re truly healed and dealt with.

Erica, out to seek revenge for past wrongs soon begins to fall under the Caribbean spell and the magic of Arpan. Torn between her desire for justice and her own longing for peace, what she discovers at the school sets her again on the path of confusion and distrust.

Set in a beautiful location and spiked with a crossover from the cast of Fischer’s other mystery novel, “The Gamblers” this is another fast-paced psychological thriller about faith and deceit. Erica will finally find out the full truth about who tricked whom and we’ll all get an answer as to who will walk away with the last laugh.

A recent review for the book

This is the third book in the Fraud or Miracle trilogy, and I enjoyed this one just as much as Book 1 and 2. In this book, we are taken to Cayman Brac where Arpan has moved his new retreat – a spiritual healing training center where his new peaceful hideaway becomes the center for chaos, deceit and a thrilling ride of who is authentic and what are the character’s motives for showing up to the retreat in this mystical thriller. Greed is the motive for all these characters wanting to destroy Arpan and steal his business.

Erica returns to find out from Arpan if he is truly a healer or merely a con man pretending to heal her of a disease she’s not sure she really had. While taking part in the classes, she spends secret time investigating the truth behind Arpan and his dealings with the two mysterious women Julia from the pharmaceutical company who forbid Arpan to practice healing after her company bought the rights for the so called ‘elexir’ which Arpan had given up and Hilda, Erica’s ex assistant who was part of the scheme with Julia to make Erica believe she had terminal cancer but was miraculously healed. We also find Ben the accountant from the Gamblers, who shows up wanting to put his spiritual side to good use by joining the retreat, but are his intentions honest or is he part of the deceitful clan who power this story?

Fischer has a great talent for keeping his readers hooked til the very end of his books. His characters are memorable and well fleshed out. This book will keep you wondering all the way who is good and who is evil. A superb ending I never anticipated. A great whodunit for mystery lovers.

Fabulously written!! You will not be able to put this book down, and will greatly enjoy escaping into the lives of the characters, the colorful Irish landscape and lifestyle, and the reminder of what it feels like to fall in love. The beautiful skill in which Claire Fullerton writes brings you into the hearts and minds of her characters so much that you feel you are one of them. I picked up the book on a Saturday morning and except for a few personal interruptions, I could not put it down and was finished that afternoon…and wishing the journey was not over. Modern Day Gothic on November 16, 2017

The Magician’s Curse is a modern day gothic romance. We meet Herman, who is traveling to start a new job, and Stephen, a successful magician. There is an immediate attraction between the pair, and so begins a tale of romance, intrigue, heartache, and possible danger. This is the first book I have read by Linda G. The next author I would like to feature is Teri Polen and her book Sarah which was published in December 2016.

41jwrqyo45l-_uy250_About Sarah

Seventeen-year-old horror fan Cain Shannon thought helping a ghost find her killers would be the supernatural adventure of a lifetime. Now, he just hopes to survive long enough to protect his family and friends from her.

A bet between friends goes horribly wrong, resulting in Sarah’s death. When she returns to seek justice against those responsible, Cain agrees to help her. But when he discovers Sarah has been hijacking his body, he realizes she wants retribution instead of justice.

Terrified of what could have happened when he wasn’t in control, Cain commands Sarah to leave his house – but exorcising her isn’t that easy. She retaliates against her murderers in bloody, horrific ways, each death making her stronger, then sets her sights on Cain. With the help of friends, Cain fights to save himself and his loved ones and searches for a way to stop Sarah before she kills again.

One of the recent reviews from Goodreads

F.R. Jameson Nov 15, 2017 F.R. rated it really liked it

In the day or so since I finished reading SARAH, I’ve been trying to figure out what it does right so as to utterly grip me. After all, this is a YA novel about the ghost of a teenage girl, and the other teenagers who encounter her. Written baldly like that, most people are going to feel that it’s something they’ve seen before/read before. (Teenage girl ghosts seem to be two a penny, why aren’t there more 1890’s escape-artist ghosts?) But Polen takes something that’s in danger of tipping into hackneyed cliché, and creates a book which builds up slowly until its genuinely edge of the seat stuff.

So how does she do this? Part of it is that in the character of Sarah, our titular ghost, Polen has created a spirit – who in the first part at least – is genuinely amorphous. You’re never quite sure where you are with her and so even without overly sinister goings on, the reader is already put that little bit on edge. And that leads into the second element which really makes this book stand out, Polen is a superb writer of suspense. She understands how and when to raise the tension, to maintain it and twist the nerves that little bit more. Even the ending, which in other hands might be a rote trip to predictability, Polen still finds discordant keys to play even as us readers turn to the last page.

Just one note, the narrative does end but there’s a coming next time hint, which is normally something with the capacity to really irritate me. This one though is so clever and deliciously evil that it’s more than whet my appetite for more.

The book is in Print, Ebook and also Audible.

The next author with a book for all romantics this Christmas is Beguiling Delilah: Romancing the Guardians Book Six by Lyn Horner which was published in July.

About the book

He’s a Navajo sworn to bring her to America;
She’s a sexy genius in a race with him across France

Delilah Moreau, the glamorous French Guardian, possesses a miraculous mathematical talent that provides her a privileged life, but it can’t give her what she truly wants: lasting love. Leon Tseda, a Navajo whose homeland serves as a hidden gathering place for the Guardians, vows to bring Delilah to safety, thwarting thugs sent to capture her and the valuable scroll she guards. Opening in Paris, the story whisks the pair in a life-and-death chase across France to Nice and Monte Carlo on the breathtaking Côte d’Azur.

Both Delilah and Leon have lost loved ones, and they’re no longer youngsters, but they are not too old for a second chance at love. Their journey is fraught with danger, excitement and steamy, mature romance. Will it lead to love – if they live long enough?

The series so far: There are seven Guardians, each possessing a psychic gift and a precious scroll containing a secret prophecy handed down from ancient Irish seers. Not to be revealed until mankind is ready to listen, the prophesies are in danger of being seized by vicious “Hellhounds” who want to use them for their own evil ends.

One of the recent reviews for the book

I loved this book for several reasons. The biggest reason was the characters. It was refreshing to read about characters closer to my own age rather than sweet young things in their twenties. Delilah is a mathematical genius and a business woman. Pairing her up with a rugged American Indian couldn’t have been easy. But Lyn pulled it off with flying colors. They weren’t shy about expressing their extreme differences but maturity gave them the advantage of the wisdom of how to overcome those differences and still enjoy a romantic relationship that would last a long time. But have to say, having a Leon was easy to fall for. He’s proud and protective at the same time and he knew a good woman when he saw her.

Another reason I really enjoyed the book is the French location. I’ve visited the settings in this book and it was fun to revisit them through this book as the Hell Hounds (bad guys) chase them through the French countryside to gain access to the secret scrolls Delilah protects. With each of her books in this series, Lyn takes us to a new world location and it keeps this series fresh. I recommend that fellow readers read this entire series for better understanding but I’m certain none will be disappointed. Each book gets us closer to the secrets and the big battle that is sure to happen when the Hell Hounds, descend to steal the secrets along with the power of the knowledge they contain. Can’t wait!

And now time to catch up with Word Weaver Contest winner Heather Kindt whose debut novel Ruby Slips and Poker Chips was published a couple of weeks ago.. It is now in both eBook and print versions. It has also attracted some excellent early reviews.

About Ruby Slips and Poker Chips

Second-grade teacher Dottie Gale lives in the tiny town of Quandary, Kansas, which is pretty much smack dab in the middle of nowhere. No mountains. No ocean. No life. Her ex-boyfriend and current school board member, Corbin Lane, cheated on her, making school functions more than a little awkward. But worst of all, a tornado named Maxine Westward rips through Dottie’s school as the new principal and has made her life at work a living hell.
When Dottie is chosen to go to a teacher’s conference in Las Vegas, she knows her life is going to change.

Driving from Quandary to Vegas, three strangers enter her life. Through a string of situations involving poppies, flying monkeys, and a life-size sculpture of an iconic rock star the four soon become inseparable. So, when Westward arrives on her broom in Vegas, Dottie is ready for battle. Her boss black mails her with stories of incarceration, thievery, and a steamy relationship with her travel companion, but Dottie knows that those who hurl insults shouldn’t hold secrets of their own.

One of the early reviews for the book.

Cynthia Tatum 5.0 out of 5 stars It’s a fun read! December 2, 2017

Dottie Gale is a snappy second grade teacher in a small town in Kansas who is about to get swept up into a whirlwind cross-country road trip on the way to a teacher conference. She makes some new quirky friends on her trip and finds herself in the most bizarre of situations by no fault of her own. Add to the mix a new principal with higher aspirations than staying at a small school in Kansas and an old cheating high school boyfriend and the adventure begins!

I found this to be a fun read with many chuckles throughout as Dottie was a wise-cracking main character that kept the pace moving quickly. I enjoyed the parallels between Dottie and Dorothy of The Wizard of Oz and found the author to give just the right balance between references to the old classic and this story. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a not-so serious, yet very enjoyable, read curled up in front of a fireplace with a warm blanket and a mug of tea on a cozy evening.

Another great read for Christmas is by Teagan Riordain Geneviene with her latest release Murder at the Bijou.

About Murder at the Bijou

Long ago I developed a writing exercise. I would ask friends to give me three completely random things. Then I would write until I had mentioned all the things. I brought that exercise to my blog, but I had the readers send me their things. I let the random things drive every detail of a serial story, setting, plot, and characters. That resulted in The Three Things Serial Story, which gave birth to this culinary mystery. However, this time the “things” are food related — or ingredients.

As with the first serial, Murder at the Bijou — Three Ingredients I is a spontaneously written, pantser story. I let the “ingredients” readers sent each week drive every aspect of a new serial story. This is the “bookized” version of that serial.

This time the Jazz Age setting is Savannah, Georgia where our flapper, Pip is “sentenced” to live with her grandmother and learn to cook. Pip gets caught up in a layered mystery that includes bootleggers, G-men, and the varied challenges of being a young woman in changing times. She meets new friends including some animal characters.

If you have not read The Three Things Serial Story, be warned. This adventure contains a bit of a spoiler, but does not go into detail about it.

One of the reviews for the book

This is a very enjoyable murder story set in the 1920s. Pip, Granny Phanny and a whole bunch of alliterated characters populate the story of surprisingly strong suspense with equally surprising turns of events.

This is hugely enjoyable and definitely recommended to anyone with a sense of fun and humour.

I loved this book when it was published in parts on the blog and loved it even more re-reading it as a whole in one sitting. Yes, one sitting.

I only now realised just how much work had gone into the individual parts. I often forgot from one week to the next what certain references mean or what they allude to. The novel is hugely enjoyable and a fun read thanks to many quirky expressions, usage of words off the beaten track, fabulous character names and many more delicious ingredients.
The writing is very original and the story line is fun and always manages to surprise you.
That’s in part because of the randomness of the supplies ingredients, but also due to the author’s creative powers.

I’m so glad this was released as novel so I can enjoy the continuity and apprefciate just how well composed this ‘fragmented’ story actually is.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – Author Update – Linda G. Hill, Helen Jones, J.A. Owenby and Robbie and Michael Cheadle.

Welcome to Friday’s Cafe and Bookstore update and another full house today beginning with Linda G. Hill with the most recent review for her book The Magician’s Curse: A Paranormal Romance – The Great Dagmaru Book 1.

Until the end of October all proceeds from books sold by Linda G. Hill will be donated to the fund for hurrican relief for the Islands.

One of the most recent reviews for the book

A demon incubus passed from generation to generation and handed down from father to son is the creative genius of Canadian author, Linda G. Hill. In, The Magician’s Curse, those infected with the scourge have one sole purpose in life – to seduce women and create offspring. Stephen Dagmar inherits this bane of his existence which ties his family to their servants, the Currys’ involving some creepy relationships in the true gothic sense of the genre.

Yet, as the author states, “Things don’t always go as planned.” Enter, Herman Anderson, an almost eighteen-year-old ready to break free from the restraints of a broken family. Her mother is dysfunctional with some kind of strange malady, and her father is gone most of the time. Yet, determined to strike out on her own, Herman leaves behind her eleven-year-old brother to fend for himself with the promise that she will send for him when she is situated at the job she accepted at a far from home horse farm.

While on the train heading to the new job, Herman engages in a conversation with the captivating magician, Stephen Dagmar. There is an immediate attraction between the two, and the story takes off, sweeping the reader off your feet in much the same fashion. Before you know it, Herman is under Stephen’s spell and agrees to become his magician’s assistant.

I found this reaction hard to believe at first until I realized there was more at play here. Much in the same way that Dracula held power over the ladies, Stephen Dagmar commands the physical attraction of men and women alike. Herman is no exception, and for one so young and inexperienced in the ways of men, she falls for Stephen immediately. Stephen senses something special in Herman and is clearly smitten himself.

Immediately, Herman enters the fairy tale world of Dagmaru, the magician, where money is no object. Stephen spends lavishly on the teen, and as they get to know one another, their physical attraction grows. Finally, in desperation, Stephen explains that until Herman is eighteen, they will not consummate their relationship. There is a dark thread of sexual tension that runs through the book from beginning to end that at times gave me the shivers.

Deep down I suspected that I knew where the story was headed, but for the life of me I couldn’t predict the twists and turns the novel produced. The writing was crisp and clear as it propelled me on toward the explosive ending. In fact, the suspense kept me turning pages long into the night. Even so, by the end of book one, I was haunted by more questions than answers. I look forward to the second book in the series with the hope that these issues will be solved.

The Magician’s Curse is a deliciously eerie tale unlike any I’ve read so far. Be prepared to be seduced by the supernatural potential of the series. I loved it and can’t wait to find out what happens next!

The next author with an update is Helen Jones with a recent review for her book A Thousand Rooms.

About A Thousand Rooms

Katie is thirty-two, single, and used to work in advertising. She’s also dead. A lost soul hitching rides with the dying, trying to find her way to… wherever she’s supposed to be.

And whoever she’s supposed to be with. Heaven, it seems, has a thousand rooms. What will it take to find hers?

One of the recent reviews for the book on Goodreads

Laurie rated it Four Stars on September 5th 2017

Wow! Haven’t we all wondered what happens when our time on earth end?
Helen Jones took the plunge thru a character named Katie who dies suddenly and quite by accident. Obviously, Nobody was expecting her, which causes some problems for Katie as she attempts to find Heaven.

Heaven isn’t about one big cloud we all sit on, but finding peace and complete happiness and forgiveness in those we have left behind. Katie- after visiting so many rooms in Heaven that she does not belong in, finds her room and her complete love.

“Maybe I would have been able to show you a little, but you had to find it in yourself. You’re the only person who can help you, in the end.”  “I was blessed.”

An interesting read that would be an excellent book club discussion. I truly enjoyed it.

The next author with an update is J. A. Owenby with a recent release, the novella My Hurricane.

About the novella

Do you ever think you know things, but realize that you don’t know jack?

That was me. I thought I had the world in the palm of my hands.

Senior year was a breeze, complete with raging parties, a hot girlfriend, and a future all laid out for me. Life was perfect. Christ, was I wrong.

And when everything started crumbling down, there was not one damn thing I could do to make it stop. Life started spiraling out of control, one letdown and setback after the next. And now, suddenly, I’m trapped in a hurricane of hell that I can’t escape.

I’m Walker Farren, And this is only the beginning.

One of the recent reviews for the novella

Great read on September 5, 2017

Owenby does it again. This novella is told from Walker’s perspective. Having read the Truth trilogy, this short story took me back to the beginning of Walker’s teen years and brought the trilogy to a full circle. I was immediately drawn in on the very first page and couldn’t put it down. I didn’t want it to end.

If you haven’t read the Truth series, I highly recommend that you do. J.A. Owenby has a way of pulling you in and making you want more.

My First Book Shout Out – All Good Stories by Linda G. Hill

first book shout out

Today a novellette with humour and romance…congratulations to Linda G. Hill who is celebrating the release of her first book, All Good Stories.

51ozbaolu-l-_uy250_About the Book

As best friends, Xavier and Jupiter have always been supportive of each others’ romantic relationships. But when Jupiter meets Bob online, Xavier can’t help but feel he needs to come to her rescue. There’s just something about Bob.

In the process of preventing Bob from wooing Jupiter away, Xavier realizes he’s been in love with her all along. Can he keep her safe and win her heart? And will he ever get to read her manuscript?Join Xavier, Jupiter, and a quirky cast of characters in this fun romantic comedy novelette with a twist you won’t see coming.

Some of the early reviews

I came into this book not quite knowing what to expect. I knew it would involve “mushy stuff,” and that it was liable to be more lighthearted than my usual fare, but beyond that I didn’t have much to go on.Let me say that I am glad I took the trip. Sometimes whim and chance lead us to things that we would not otherwise have come across, and in those moments we should be thankful. The technical portion of the program is well done, and while in the first few chapters you might be prone to thinking it childish or a little over-the-top, it becomes clearer towards the end and you start to see how it all fits together. The final whammy – and the opportunity to read the central story that forms the third layer of the work – cap things off nicely and offer an explanation for the apparent oddity of certain turns of phrase elsewhere. It’s not your standard romance, and gives this particular book-lover and writer a warm fuzzy feeling that there may yet be hope after all. If you’re even slightly on the fence about it, take the plunge. You’ll enjoy it.

Linda G. Hill’s All Good Stories is a light-hearted story. It is fast-paced, quickly moving the reader from scene to scene with each new chapter. For a quick read, the characters are well-developed, well-described and unique. Linda tells a story within a story within a story. When you read it, you will know what I mean (and you definitely want to read it!)

The two main characters, Xavier and Jupiter are long-time friends. Xavier runs a book store and Jupiter is a writer and works in a gym as a receptionist (near the end of the novella). The other characters are Bob the Blogger, Gloria the waitress, and Harry the Horrible. Xavier and Jupiter’s lives are intermingled with the other three characters in what turns out to be a hilarious, off-the-cuff near-disatrous story-line. The twists in this story keep you reading and the strange last few parts of the story will leave you in awe of Linda’s talent as a yarn-spinner.

You won’t find any spoilers here. You must read this one for yourself. It is a delightful, hysterical tale that can be read within an hour or two. Well worth the time!

Fun Frolic By Trent P. McDonald on October 26, 2016

“All Good Stories” was a light-hearted, fun tale written with a bit of humor. Some of the other reviews give you a pretty good idea of the story without giving to much away, so I’ll just add that this short book was an enjoyable read. Anyway, in the words of “Bob”, it was a fabulously fun frolic, full of frothy adventure and fantastic fantasy and… uhm, yeah, sorry, I forgot that “Bob” isn’t the greatest of poets 😉
