Having had more than enough of the big city, Detective Charlie McClung moves to a small town looking for a simpler life. Turns out his first case is the most complicated of his career.

A young woman is found shot and while everyone is telling him suicide, his gut, and the dead woman’s beautiful neighbor, are telling him something quite different.

One of the 100 reviews for the book

This story has it all. Murder, mystery, crime, drama, love and a great whodunit. I absolutely love reading a great whodunit and Mary Anne has achieved that in this book. This is a clean murder mystery with romance. I enjoyed reading about the main characters Charlie and Marian. They are characters both in their 40s. Charlie is a big city detective that moves to a small Georgia town to find solace and relax. There he meets Marian. Marian is a widow. Charlie investigates the death of Marian’s neighbor which looks to be apparent suicide. I loved this cozy mystery. I read it all in one evening.

This story was so intriguing. I couldn’t stop reading. This is a must read. Mary Anne did a great job keeping me guessing. This book contained twists and turns, suspense and kept me wanting to read until I was finished. It was refreshing to read a book that I could relate to. I loved watching Moonlighting, Remington Steele and Scarecrow and Mrs. King. This story reminded me of those TV programs. I’m a huge mystery buff. I laughed, was puzzled, cheered on Charlie and Marian and can’t wait to read the next book in this series. If you enjoy a good whodunit, mystery, suspense, touch of romance, clean read, you’ll absolutely love this mystery. Kudos to Mary Anne and her brilliant storytelling!

The next author is Diana J. Febry with the first book in her DCI Peter Hatherall Mysteries – The Skeletons of Birkbury again perfect for mystery lovers this Christmas.

About the book

When the body of a teenage girl is discovered in Birkbury, the villagers close ranks. Gossip turns to fear and suspicion as they realize the killer is one of them and is prepared to kill again.

DCI Peter Hatherall must fight his past and class divisions to find the killer.
All must decide which secrets are worth dying for.

A recent review for the book

A good mystery  on 20 September 2018

The novel is a cold case detective story focusing on a dead girl who vanished twenty years earlier. This lends the story a slower pace than if it had been a recent murder, but that’s okay. In the small, slightly suffocating, rural community, we have plenty of suspects, and you’ll take against one or two right from the off. We certainly get a lot of detail about each character, possibly to make them all seem important (and therefore worthy of our suspicion), and we hop between points of view, even within a scene. The detectives work well together, although their off-topic back stories occasionally took centre stage, which may not suit an impatient mystery fan. All in all, a good mystery that keeps you guessing until the end.

The next author with books in a series is Judy Penz Sheluk and here is book one of The Marketville Mysteries – Skeletons in the Attic. Some of the books have been re-released with new covers.

About the book

Calamity (Callie) Barnstable isn’t surprised to learn she’s the sole beneficiary of her late father’s estate, though she is shocked to discover she has inherited a house in the town of Marketville—a house she didn’t know he had. However, there are conditions attached to Callie’s inheritance: she must move to Marketville, live in the house, and solve her mother’s murder.

Callie’s not keen on dredging up a thirty-year-old mystery, but if she doesn’t do it, there’s a scheming psychic named Misty Rivers who hopes to expose the Barnstable family secrets herself. Determined to thwart Misty and fulfill her father’s wishes, Callie accepts the challenge. But is she ready to face the skeletons hidden in the attic?

One of the reviews for the book

As an (ignorant) American, I hadn’t realized that Canada had tried the Prohibition experiment too, and earlier than the U.S. Just a throwaway comment grousing about the government-run liquor stores made me take a second to check Wikipedia. That this well-written tale of a missing mother made me think and learn beyond following the clues was my own first clue that this was going to be an extra-enjoyable read–or, listen, in this case, as I allowed narrator Claira Jordyn to read aloud while I enjoyed breakfast and other otherwise non-brain activities. Intriguing premise, logical clue-following research (including hours in the library), and a surprise ending.

Book 2: THE ROCK OF MAGUS – Code Red in the Vatican
Book 3: THE MAGUS EPIPHANY – Ancient treasures and a new revelation
Book 4: HOLY SPEAR OF MAGUS – The covenant will be fulfilled

One of the reviews for the book

Anglican Priest Jotham Fletcher is due to give a lecture about Simon Magnus at the church in Rome where Magnus died. Magnus was the leader of a religious cult that is thought to have vanished around 400 AD. When a mysterious robed man is found murdered at the church not long before the lecture, Jotham becomes the main suspect.

As rumours surface about a papyrus scroll mentioning Magnus, things get worse and more dead bodies start to appear. Jotham gets kidnapped and tortured and ends up on the run, a journey that takes him across Europe. Meanwhile his Lover Antonella might know more about what is going on than she admits.

It’s up to Jotham to fit the pieces of the puzzle together and find out what the Brotherhood, a religious order that will stop at nothing to protect their beliefs, has to do with it all? And did the Simonean Sect really cease to exist or are they somehow also involved? And can Iago Visser, the rich reclusive billionaire friend of Antonella, be trusted or does he have his own agenda?

This is a thoroughly enjoyable story full of action and adventure. The plot is well developed, gripping, fast-paced and suspenseful with unexpected twists and turns. The characters were interesting, not superhuman as in some action and adventure stories and all the more realistic because of it.

The book fits into the same genre as Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code” or “Angels and Demons”. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to read a good action and adventure novel.

Smorgasbord Book Promotion – Air Your Reviews – D. G. Kaye and Mary Anne Edwards

Welcome to the showcase for recent reviews. If you are not in the Cafe and Bookstore then you are still very welcome to share your latest review here and go into the bookstore as well.

First review is for the memoir P.S. I Forgive You: A Broken Legacy by D.G. Kaye.

About P.S. I Forgive You: A Broken Legacy

“I hurt for her. She wasn’t much of a mother, but she was still my mother.”

Confronted with resurfacing feelings of guilt, D.G. Kaye is tormented by her decision to remain estranged from her dying emotionally abusive mother after resolving to banish her years ago, an event she has shared in her book Conflicted Hearts. In P.S. I Forgive You, Kaye takes us on a compelling heartfelt journey as she seeks to understand the roots of her mother’s narcissism, let go of past hurts, and find forgiveness for both her mother and herself.

After struggling for decades to break free, Kaye has severed the unhealthy ties that bound her to her dominating mother—but now Kaye battles new confliction, as the guilt she harbors over her decision only increases as the end of her mother’s life draws near. Kaye once again struggles with her conscience and her feelings of being obligated to return to a painful past she thought she left behind.

The most recent review for the book

A Courageous Revealing on September 1, 2017

Parenthood does not come with a user manual. Children learn parenting skills from the adults in their lives. They generally emulate what they see and experience. If their lifelong experience is a negative one, they might be inclined to perpetuate it. But this does not have to be so.

In her compelling memoir, P.S. I Forgive You, D.G. Kaye reveals the habitual neglect and abuse she and her siblings suffered at the hands of an envious, threatening, narcissistic, and deceitful mother.

It takes courage, strength, and determination to prevail over hardship, especially when it is a constant in childhood; especially when a parent perpetrates neglect and abuse. But it is not impossible to overcome adversity when one focuses their intention.

Kaye shows us how to take the energy consumed by feeling mistreated, hurt, fearful, and guilty, and instead make it work for us by directing that energy toward building self-esteem, fortitude, and positive intention. She tells us how she reacted as a child, and then shows us how, as an adult, she turned a negative into a positive. Acceptance, compassion, and forgiveness are major players in this scenario, a dynamic that tested the author’s resilience, challenged her conscience, and ultimately allowed her to triumph over the all-consuming adverse conditioning perpetrated by her demanding narcissistic mother.

I highly recommend this book to anyone whose childhood was hijacked by a neglectful and abusive parent, and who would like to learn how to break free and live a happy healthy life.

Another Great Book on September 2, 2017

This is the fifth book in the Charlie McClung Mystery series by Mary Anne Edwards and it was another great story. They just keep getting better and better. There was suspense with a dash of romance. I loved this book. A must read!

I have enjoyed the progression of Charlie and Marian’s ‘love affair.’ Something or someone is always trying to inflict harm on one of them. This just serves to strengthen their relationship. Their friends all rally around to try to protect them. The characters are believable and the reader can ‘picture’ what they look like and their personalities. I like the continuity and progression of a series. While it is a big help to have read them in sequence, the reader can pick up on the characters and their relationships quickly.
I can’t wait for Mary Anne’s next Charlie McClung Mystery. Charlotte Pinkston

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New on the Shelves – A Charlie McClung Mystery – Flirting with Time by Mary Anne Edwards

Welcome to another author who is going to join the cafe and bookstore. Flirting with Time is the 5th book so far in the Charlie McClung Mystery series by Mary Anne Edwards.

What people are saying about Flirting With Time –

“Haunting, but in a good way. Twisty, turny, and full of heart.
~Gretchen Archer – author of the USA Today Bestselling Davis Way Crime Capers

“Fans of Nick and Nora, fans of Tracy and Hepburn—rejoice. You’ll love Marian and Charlie. The talented Mary Anne Edwards weaves a charming, entertaining and delightfully romantic tale of small town deceit. It’s as if Agatha Christie wrote Hart to Hart—and happy readers will eagerly await the next page-turning puzzle.”
~Hank Phillippi Ryan – Anthony, Agatha, Mary Higgins Clark, and Macavity winning mystery author. Emmy-winning journalist.

One of the early customer reviews for the book

I love the McClung series. I highly suggest reading the series in order. The first book is deliberately slower paced to introduce the characters. After that, the mysteries get more complex. Each book gets better and better. Which brings me to Flirting with Danger, it is my favorite book so far. I say so far because I hope there are plenty more books in this series. Once again Marian and Charlie McClung find themselves in a mystery. Warning : there is a continuing story line, therefore I recommend reading Sins of my Youth which is the fourth book in the series.

I loved the 1980’s references. Characters discuss Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and they use the slang awesome. They gave me flashbacks. Marian and McClung remind me of a working class Hart to Hart. Their love is never a question , and they both have big hearts.

This mystery is the best one yet. Great pacing, continuing character development, and lots of suspense. There are reoccurring characters from the previous books including my favorite, Charlie’s Ma. She is such a giving person that takes everything that comes and makes it better. There are tons of suspects and revelations. I will not spoil the fun. I highly recommend this book to all mystery lovers. It is a must read.
