Smorgasbord Poetry – Colleen Chesebro’s Weekly Tanka Challenge – #Poetschoice – #ButterflyCinquain – The Circle of Life by Sally Cronin

This week it is Colleen Chesebro’s Weekly Tanka Challenge 193 poet’s choice and I took a photograph this week in my garden and thought it made a useful prompt.

Butterfly Cinquain – The Circle of Life

Even
as the bloom dies
it still gives nourishment
to the visiting butterflies
in need.
Soon the flower’s petals will drop
having fulfilled it’s role
in the circle
of life.

This month Kerfe Roig from last month’s challenge picked the theme ‘Maps’…for Colleen Chesebro’s Weekly Tanka Challenge 192 themeprompt

I have written a butterfly cinquain for the occasion.

Reef, Heart, Shape, Island, Corals, Atoll, Sea, Ocean

The Maps

The Maps
etched on my heart
stop me losing my way
any time that we are apart
in life.
They always guide me home to you
to safety in your arms
and the warmth of
your love.

Haiku Sequence – Tracks

Into the distance
the one way track transports us
to our destiny.

There is no way back
once you board the train to fate
destination set.

How long our journey
in life may be preordained
but not how we live.

There will be places
to linger and find great joy
and people to love

Even dark tunnels
we might have to travel through
end with a bright light.

At the last station
as you alight from the train
do so with a smile.

Smorgasbord Poetry – Colleen Chesebro’s Weekly Tanka Challenge – #HaikuSequence – Rain by Sally Cronin

This week on Colleen Chesebro’s Weekly Tanka Challenge 189 it is Poet’s Choice. I have chosen to write a Haiku Sequence about one of my favourite topics of conversation…Rain.

Haiku Sequence – Rain

It can be daunting
to find beauty in the rain
when it drowns the earth

Summer flowers strive
to retain vibrant colours
under such onslaught

Wind joins its cousin
laughing at the destruction
combined efforts bring

Birds sit and shiver
in the glistening hedgerows
desperate to feed

Then a ray of light
as sun fights its way through clouds
it has come to play

The wind and rain pause
waiting for the sun’s next move
in nature’s board game

They admit defeat
no match for the sun’s power
and leave in silence

Birds begin to sing
and flowers lift up their heads
to smile at the world.

Smorgasbord Poetry – Colleen Chesebro’s weekly Tanka Challenge – Double #Etheree The Wisdom of Trees by Sally Cronin

This week on Colleen Chesebro’s Weekly Tanka Challenge 188 themeprompt  author Sue Vincent has provide a wonderful quotation to respond to.

“Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth.” Herman Hesse

Double Etheree – The Wisdom of Trees

Trees
ancient
observers
of history
have stories to tell
of man’s time on this earth.
Stored within each leaf and seed
the cellular memories wait
to be discovered by those that ask
for the gift of their infinite wisdom.
From green saplings to the giant redwoods
messages are carried on the winds.
Listen for the rustle of leaves
and the music that they make.
For as long as they sing
the world will be safe
but woe betide
should we cut
them all
down.

Butterfly Cinquain – Washed Up by Sally Cronin

Washed up
are words that haunt
those that feel they have failed
to meet expectations in life
and love.
If they look closely however,
even the sea’s rejects
provide us with
beauty.

Butterfly Cinquain – Wise Women

Daughter
is favoured with
healer’s ancient knowledge
whispered across the centuries.
Secrets
bringing danger to wise women
from those that fear their craft
lest they become
accursed.

Smorgasbord Poetry – Colleen Chesebro’s weekly Tanka Challenge -#DoubleEtheree – The Visitor by Sally Cronin

Welcome to this week’s poetry in response to Colleen Chesebro Tuesday Poetry Challeng no 185 which is Poet’s Choice.

This week, despite the dreadful weather, I had a lovely encounter with a surprise visitor to the garden. A racing pigeon who had been blown off course by the high winds, especially at the altitude he would have been flying, over the previous three days.

I did not get close enough to get his ring number, but I did get in touch with the UK, Welsh and Irish racing pigeon societies. There had been a big race from Barcelona to the UK on 28th June and his attempts to fly away, always to the East and back to the coast, made me think he might be one of the 500 Welsh birds in the race.

He stayed with us for three days, and responded to my voice and whilst never coming up close enough to touch, he would call to me from the roof when I came out of the back door and fly down to eat his seed and drink water at my feet.

Finally on the third day he circled the house twice then headed off again… this time for good. Hopefully the rest and food reset his navigation system, and he is now safely tucked up in his home loft. I am sure his owner would be pleased to see him as these birds are much prized and loved.

As it is poet’s choice, I thought I would use some of the photographs and write a double etheree about the encounter… It is always a privilege when an animal offers their trust.

The Visitor

A
surprise
visitor,
a ringed pigeon
weary and confused
blown off course by high winds
far away from his home loft.
Reassured by the other birds
feeding peacefully in this garden
he rests above on the roof of the house.
Familiar with the sounds of humans
he responds to the voice that calls him
and the shaking of a seed can.
His recovery is slow
but he becomes stronger
until finally
with two circuits
of the house
he heads
home.

Smorgasbord Poetry – Colleen Chesebro’s weekly Tanka Challenge – #Haibun – The Long Drop by Sally Cronin

This week on Colleen Chesebro Tuesday Poetry Challeng no 184 – we have been asked to write in a specific format.. which is the Haibun…Colleen gives very clear directions on this interesting prose and verse form, and there is also the added bonus of a great photo shared by Frank J. Tassone. It did rather lead me down a darker path than normal…lol

Haibun – The Long Drop

Let’s take a hike he invited. Up where the sky meets the mountain top. Won’t there be bears I questioned. Not at this time of year he assured me. Excited and well equipped, we trod the long uneven trail. Finally, at the top, he turned and cautioned me to be careful. However, the beauty of the view needed to be celebrated. He gently moved me into position at the edge and stepped back camera in hand. He waved me backwards smiling encouragingly. My last sight of his face revealed a satisfied and knowing look.
