Smorgasbord Poetry – Colleen Chesebro’s Tuesday Weekly Challenge – #Crown #Cinquain – Lullaby by Sally Cronin

This week in Colleen Chesebro’s Tuesday Poetry Challenge 240 is a themeprompt provided by Vashti Quiroz-Vega… and is ‘Lullaby’

Here is my take on the prompt…..

Crown Cinquain – Lullaby

To sing
a lullaby
you must first consider
preferences of the baby
waiting

Perhaps
a jolly song
aimed to make them chortle
to wave their hands around with glee
happy

Maybe
slow and gentle
soothing a fractious mood
or the soreness of teething gums
tearful

Deep toned
to reassure
those fearing the shadows
now allayed by a father’s voice
safety

Language
a foreign tongue
but words that mothers sing
to babies all around the world
loving.

My latest book is a collection of poetry and was published on July 19th 2021 and here is a recent review.

One of the recent reviews for the collection

Robbie Cheadle 5.0 out of 5 stars Decadently rich and full poetry  Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2021

Life is like a mosaic is the perfect title for this collection of poems where every word in each individual poem is a small tile the works to create a perfect word picture, and all the poems collectively form a complete picture of life and love.

Each poem is accompanied by a carefully selected picture that complements the poem and prepares the mind for the poetry story.

The poet touches on a vast array of topics ranging from the isolation of lockdown, the stealthy march of aging, the natural world, the joy of life and the full spectrum of human emotions, to immortality and the future. There is also a delightful section about the poet’s own childhood including pictures.

This beautiful book is perfect for people who want to embrace life and wallow decadently in its rich fullness.

Smorgasbord Poetry – Colleen Chesebro’s Tanka Tuesday Weekly Challenge #Choka #Haiku – Primal Fear by Sally Cronin

This week for Colleen Chesebro’s Tuesday Tanka Challenge it is a photoprompt with an image suggested by Cheryl, from last month’s photoprompt challenge.

I have selected a Choka followed by a Haiku for my poem this week.

Primal Fear

There is primal fear
embedded deep within cells
passed on by our ancestors
who have been witness
for many thousands of years
to this spectacle
laid on by the universe
often predicting events
beyond humankind’s control.

Meteors rain down
perhaps a gift from the gods
or their displeasure

My latest book is a collection of poetry and was published on July 19th 2021 and here is a recent review.

One of the recent reviews for the collection

Aug 11, 2021 Pamela rated it five stars it was amazing
I’ve read several of Cronin’s books, finding each of them easy to read and relatable. This Life is LIke a Mosaic book of poems, “random fragments in harmony,” is no different and yet I took it in as slowly as possible, because each poem is deep within its simplicity. Many of these short poems took my breath away in their sharp insight. I could list them, but the list would be too long. I will say that I’ll never think of being “washed up” the same way; that the Silver Lining to Isolation encourages us to look at what we’ve gained over the past year and a half; that Cronin knows how to celebrate the seasons in her poetry; and how aging and birthdays are “etched in our skin” to remind us of the beauty in each day. Lastly, the end section on Cronin’s own “Slices of Life” may be my favorite, as we learn about the girl and young woman who became the generous writer and blogger that she is.

Smorgasbord Poetry – Colleen Chesebro’s Tuesday Tanka Challenge – #Haiku with a twist – by Sally Cronin

This week in the challenge, Colleen Chesebro has offered us the chance to create our own form of syllabic poetry...Colleen Chesebro’s Tuesday Tanka Challenge 232 – specific form

Here is my take on the challenge a Sanhaiku.… (San being the Japanese for three) I am sure there is an official name for it…

a sudden silence
descends upon the garden
as birds cease to sing
a flutter of wings
heralds the arrival of death
to sparrows who stir
nature holds its breath
as the hawk enjoys his game
deadly hide and seek.

Smorgasbord Poetry – – Colleen Chesebro’s Tuesday Tanka Challenge 231 – #Choka – Discovery by Sally Cronin

This week in Colleen Chesebro’s #Tanka Tuesday Challenge 231 Jules has chosen the theme prompt ‘Discovery’ – as my garden has thrown up some surprises this year…(I tend to forget where I have put the bulbs!)  I have created a Choka..

Discovery

Mysteries are solved
of what lies beneath the soil
as dormant bulbs stir
eager to feel the sunlight
reaching for the sky
to reveal their true colours
power of nature
an inspiring renewal
of spirit and of beauty.

Smorgasbord Poetry – Colleen Chesebro’s Tanka Tuesday Challenge 224 Poet’s Choice – #BadgerHexastich – Yearning by Sally Cronin

This week it is Poet’s Choice on Colleen Chesebro’s #Tanka Tuesday Challenge 224 – I have created a Badger Hexastich or two….

Yearning
for old freedoms
to exchange smiles again
with unmasked strangers met
to extend warm
greeting

Missing
hugs that comfort
from arms out of practice
so desperate to hold
beloved ones
waiting

Smorgasbord Poetry – Colleen Chesebro’s Tanka Tuesday Challenge – Butterfly #Cinquain – #Sunflower by Sally Cronin

This week  Colleen Chesebro’s #Tanka Tuesday Challenge 223 is a Themeprompt set by last month’s star poet, Kat who has requested we “Pick a Flower” and using one of the syllabic forms tell why it is so important to us.

The sunflower was the logo for my health business and traveling through France and Spain it was always wonderful to come across fields of the golden flowers as they followed the sun’s progress across the sky.

There is a wonderful legend about a young maiden who falls in love with the god Apollo and he sends a shaft of light that turns her into a sunflower, forever destined to track his progress across the sky east to west each day.

Butterfly Cinquain – Sunflower

Symbol
of health and life
the sunflower brightens
every field that she graces.
Revered
by the ancients for golden oil
and her healing powers
she speaks to me
always

Smorgasbord Poetry – Colleen Chesebro’s #Tanka Tuesday Weekly Poetry Challenge 222 #Photoprompt – #Double Etheree – #The Future? by Sally Cronin

This week is a photoprompt in the Colleen Chesebro’s #Tanka Tuesday Challenge 222 Photoprompt – Anita Dawes from last month’s challenge has provided the photo for this month’s challenge and I have created a stacked double etheree.

The Future?

Sand’s
golden
particles
imply richness
with promise of wealth
but is only fool’s gold
for those who worked this parched land
leaving abandoned reminders
of mankind’s lack of resilience
beneath the scorching power of the sun.
Even metal and brick cannot withstand
onslaught of scouring winds over time
and just one withered tree remains
of a once vibrant forest
felled to fuel human needs
thoughtless and greedy
robbing nature
of its chance
to save
us

Smorgasbord Poetry – Colleen Chesebro’s Tanka Tuesday Challenge – Double Reversed #Nonet – Ageism by Sally Cronin

This week for Colleen Chesebro’s #Tanka Tuesday Challenge 221 it is synonyms only – for Search and Lost I have written a double reverse nonet on age related matters! I have chosen the synonyms Explore and Adrift.

Mind
body
and spirit
strive not to lose
the urge to explore
outside the barriers
created by young ageists
who dictate terms of existence
for those who have reached a certain age
How
quickly
they forget
who created
the technology
medical advances
and freedoms they now enjoy
are they scared that once set adrift
we might just show them a thing or two?

Smorgasbord Poetry – Colleen Chesebro’s Weekly Tanka Challenge – #Poetschoice – #ButterflyCinquain – The Circle of Life by Sally Cronin

This week it is Colleen Chesebro’s Weekly Tanka Challenge 193 poet’s choice and I took a photograph this week in my garden and thought it made a useful prompt.

Butterfly Cinquain – The Circle of Life

Even
as the bloom dies
it still gives nourishment
to the visiting butterflies
in need.
Soon the flower’s petals will drop
having fulfilled it’s role
in the circle
of life.
