Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – Author Update – Victoria Zigler, Angie Dokos and Rebekkah Ford

Welcome to Friday’s edition of the Cafe and Bookstore Update and my first guest is Victoria Zigler with news about the availability of more of her books in audio. Victoria is blind and for the millions of readers around the world who are sight impaired, audio books are vitally important.

Previously only available as eBooks and paperbacks, all four of Victoria’s  Degu stories – the two in her Degu Days Duo, and both her stand alone Degu books – are now available in audio, thanks to the skills of narrator James Watkins.

Degu’s Day Out

Oscar has everything a degu could need, or want, in the cage he shares with his brother, Romeo, but it’s not enough; Oscar longs for freedom. Convinced he’s missing out on an amazing adventure, Oscar dreams of the day when he’ll be able to investigate the world beyond his cage bars without the human caretakers telling him where and when he can explore. Now, at long last, his chance has arrived. But will it be the exciting adventure he’s always dreamed it would be?

The next update is for Angie Dokos for Roadside which tells the story of Serena and her journey back from violence with the help of a stranger.

About the book

Zayne finds Serena’s lifeless body off the side of the road one morning. She has been beaten and left for dead. As she recovers, they become the best of friends. It doesn’t take long for Zayne’s feelings to grow stronger. Will the fear of ruining their friendship keep them from taking a chance on love?

One of the recent reviews for the book

I’ve never been much into romance novels, but ‘Roadside’ by Angie Dokos has changed this.

Serena is a young woman brutally assaulted in the middle of the night on her way to the store. Zayne finds her left for dead on the side of the road. The desire to help this young woman compels Zayne to remain by her side until she’s recovered. While the police search for her attacker, Zayne and Serena develop a fast-friendship. But something keeps them from moving forward to the next step of a serious relationship. Why? What is it that keeps Serena from opening up to Zayne. And what keeps Zayne from doing the same.

Readers will enjoy this book which has dark moments as Serena explains her ordeal to the police, and then awaits the outcome of finding her attacker. Then there’s the developing relationship between Zayne and Serena. It’s tender, sweet, and loving. I actually related with Zayne’s shyness (much to my own embarrassment). And there’s the friends of each, who support, encourage, and joke about how Zayne and Serena keep putting off the inevitable first date. You’ll love Destiny who presses Serena to open up, while Zayne’s friends do the same.

The author has a vivid style leaving you feeling like you’re in the same room with the characters. She creates scenes that leave you laughing over the jokes they have on one another, and scenes which remind you of first love. This is my first book I’ve read by Angie Dokos, and it won’t be my last.

I highly recommend this book for readers of all genres! If a reader like myself (who prefers action-suspense, thriller stories) can enjoy a romantic story, then so will you.

The next author with an update today is Rebekkah Ford with Legends of Deceit (Book One of the Legends of Deceit Series)

About Legends of Deceit

What would you do if you discovered your life had been a lie, and you were destined to rule a kingdom where mythical creatures both beautiful and frightening exist?

Immerse yourself in a magical world where fairies and werewolves exist alongside each other and an ordinary, foul-mouth 22-year old college student named Haven Evergreen is destined to rule.

Fans of fantasy and paranormal will be captivated by this thrilling and spellbinding new series by Rebekkah Ford.

One of the recent reviews for the book

Legends of deceit is a fantasy novel written about a girl named Haven. When she comes home one day after a trip to see her parents murdered, her life turns upside down.

Larkin, a handsome soldier convinces her to come with him to a realm as he believes that she is princess Alaris. The world is filled with mystical creatures and is beautifully described. Haven discovers that she is, in fact, a princess and that her biological mother and grandmother both hid certain memories in her mind and sent her to earth in order to protect her. As things begin to unravel, she also learns a lot about who she can trust and what her destiny is.

The storyline may have not been a novel one however, it was extremely pleasing to read. The added romantic connection between Larkin and Haven was sweet and made things even more interesting.

The plot and the pace were very well thought through. The realm and world setting felt researched and were intriguing. The best thing about the book, in my opinion, is how everything came together. I look forward to reading more from this author.

In the small town of Astoria, Oregon, surrounded by deep forest and endless mountains, another world thrives . . . a menacing one where dark spirits dwell in soulless humans. Seventeen-year-old Paige Reed lives in this lush, picturesque setting. She’s not your average teen, though she appears to be. Not only is she heartsick, but she’s been receiving cryptic premonitions from a ghostly voice since the age of four. When two power-hungry malevolent beings make demands on her, she realizes then the fate of mankind rest in her hands. Her world quickly turns inside out where the impossible becomes possible, and in the end she’s faced with a life changing decision that will not only alter her existence but the world as she knows it.

One of the latest reviews on Goodreads.

Diana Blick rated it it was amazing and Five Stars

This is a great young adult paranormal; it is both fantasy and romance. It is well written and thoughtful, and the characters are well developed and not overly filled with teen angst though there is a bit of teenage emotion. Its premise is not exactly unique nor radically different from others of its kind but certain elements are different and rather interesting such as the “soulless” ones, a spiritual concept that has occurred to me on occasion as an explanation for some of the evil we see in the world. I also liked the concept of dark spirits as opposed to the popular religious idea of demons.

While the “immortals” are nothing new and their making and qualities are derivative of a number of various legendary creatures or supernaturals imagined by others, they are still just a bit different in concept. The author’s use of other legends such as Solomon’s ring were well thought out and fit perfectly in the story. I’m definitely jonesing for book two!

One small word of warning: This series is definitely only for older teens since it does have descriptions of premarital sex. The scenes are tasteful and not overly graphic and occur in a loving and committed relationship context so I would be ok with it for 16 and up, but some parents might be uncomfortable with it.

The next author is Christina Steiner whose recently released children’s book Shimji, The Channel Island Vixen is a finalist in the McGrath House Independent Book Awards:

About the book

Shimji, a young Channel Island vixen, dreams to go where no Island fox has ever gone: to the place her ancestors came from thousands of years ago. By talking with a sea lion named Malibu and a seagull named Topanga, she finds the island’s harbor and stows away on a boat headed to the California coast. During her adventure on the main-land, Shimji befriends wild and domesticated animals. She learns from their different ways and thus gains knowledge of the world. Her curiosity satisfied, Shimji longs to return home, only to be discovered by humans. Scientists want to send her to a zoo. Can Shimji escape and find her way back to her island home?

One of the recent reviews for the book

This book is adorable. I purchased it for my grandson who just turned 4 and we read it together as a chapter book. The tale is about Shimji, a Channel Island vixen, who sneaks off to the mainland for a look around the home of her ancestors. She runs into a delightful variety of animals who help her along on her adventure before she decides to sneak back home, a task fraught with some challenges.

Shimji is a sweet character with a courageous and friendly nature, and the animals that she encounters are a hoot with distinctive personalities and voices. The opossums made me laugh out loud, and Blackout, a domesticated cat, is a riot as he explains how he manages his humans. The gulls are pretty funny too. Throughout the book, Steiner weaves in a bit of history about the island foxes as well as information about all the different animals Shimji meets.

A highly enjoyable book for kids with gentle characters working together to help each other. My grandson gave it 5 stars, and I second the opinion.
