Celine Dion – The Power of love

“The Power of Love” was the 8th best selling single of 1994 in the US and the best selling single by a female artist. This was Dion’s first #1 song in the US and Australia, and her second #1 in Canada while making the top ten around the globe. “The Power of Love” won the ASCAP Pop Award for Most Performed Song in the United States and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Single, two Billboard Music Awards for Hot 100 Single of the Year, and for the Juno Award for Single of the Year.

June 15th Disney’s animated musical film “The Lion King” opens in theaters with $42 million

Prince – The most beautiful girl in the world

“The most beautiful girl in the world” was the lead single from the 1994 EP “The Beautiful Experience” and the 1995 album “The Gold Experience.” The song became a worldwide hit and established Prince’s ability to succeed commercially under his new name, peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the UK it peaked at #1 as it did in many countries across Europe. The video was directed by Prince and film director Antoine Fugua. The song was used, in part, in the Miss America pageant in 1994.

Wet Wet Wet – Love is all Around

“Love Is All Around” is a song recorded by English rock band the Troggs, featuring a string quartet and a ‘tick tock’ sound on percussion, in D-major. It was written by lead singer Reg Presley and was purportedly inspired by a television transmission of the Joy Strings Salvation Army band’s “Love That’s All Around”. The song was first released as a single in the UK in October 1967, peaking at number 5.
“Love Is All Around” has been covered by numerous artists. Wet Wet Wet’s cover, for the soundtrack to the 1994 film Four Weddings and a Funeral, was an international hit and spent 15 consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart. wetwetwetmusic

August 29th British band Oasis release their debut album “Definitely Maybe”, becomes fastest-selling album ever in UK

Corona – Rhythm of the Night

“The Rhythm of the Night” is the debut single by Italian Eurodance group Corona. It was released in 1993 in Italy, then elsewhere the following year. The song is the title track of their 1995 debut studio album The Rhythm of the Night. It was written by Francesco Bontempi, Annerley Emma Gordon, Giorgio Spagna, Pete Glenister and Mike Gaffey, and produced by Bontempi. The vocals for this song were performed by Italian singer Giovanna Bersola, who is not credited on the single and does not appear in the music video The song was a worldwide hit in 1994, peaking at number-one in Italy, and within the top five in most of Europe, while in the US, it fell short of the top ten, reaching number eleven on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cash Box Top 100. William Price King is an American jazz singer, crooner, and composer.

His interest in music began at an early age when he studied piano and clarinet in high school. At Morehouse College in Atlanta where he grew up, he sang in the Glee Club and studied classical music. After graduation he went off to the Yale School of Music where he earned a Masters degree. From there he journeyed to New York where he created a jazz trio ‘Au Naturel’ which performed in some of the hottest venues in Manhattan including gigs on Broadway and the famous ‘Rainbow Room.’ These gigs opened doors for performances in Montreal and a European tour.

While touring Europe he met a lovely French lady, Jeanne Maïstre, who, a year later became his wife. King left the group ‘Au Naturel’ and settled in the south of France where he started a new life on the French Riviera, opening his own music school – the “Price King Ecole Internationale de Chant.” He has had the pleasure over the years of seeing many of his students excel as singers on a professional level, and some going on to become national celebrities. He continues to coach young singers today, in his spare time.

Sally Cronin is an author, blogger and broadcaster who enjoyed four years as part of the team on Onda Cero International’s English speaking morning show in Marbella and then for two years as a presenter on Expressfm the local radio station in Portsmouth. She co-presented two ‘Drive Time’ shows a week with Adrian Knight, hosted the live Thursday Afternoon Show and The Sunday Morning Show guests including musicians and authors. Following this she became Station Director for a local internet television station for two years, producing and presenting the daily news segment, outside broadcasts and co-presenting the Adrian and Sally chat show live on Friday evenings.

She and her husband David have now returned to Ireland where they live on the Wexford Coast where she blogs and continues to write books.

Collective Soul – Shine

“Shine” was the debut single from the alternative rock band Collective Soul and was the lead single from their debut album “Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid.” It became the #1 “Album Rock Song” of 1994, and won a Billboard award for “Top Rock Track.” The song also reached the top of the Billboard “Album Rock Tracks” chart for eight weeks then went on to peak at #11 on their Hot 100 chart. VH1 later ranked “Shine” at #42 on their list of the “100 Greatest Songs of the ‘90s.”

The Cranberries – Zombie

“Zombie” is a protest song from the alternative rock band the Cranberries, written in memory of the two young victims killed in the 1993 Warrington bombings, Johnathan Ball and Tim Parry and was the lead single from the album “No Need to Argue.” The song was written by the band’s lead singer Dolores O’Riordan and peaked at #1 in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany and Iceland as well as Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart. The song was voted by Triple J listeners as #1 on the Triple J Hottest 100, 1994 chart and won the Best Song Award at the 1995 MTV Europe Music Awards.

Bruce Springsteen – The Streets of Philadelphia

“Streets of Philadelphia” is a song written and performed by American rock musician Bruce Springsteen for the film Philadelphia (1993) starring Tom Hanks, an early mainstream film dealing with HIV/AIDS. Released as a single in 1994, the song was a hit in many countries, particularly in Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, and Norway, where it topped the singles charts. In the United States, the single peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song received acclaim and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song and four Grammy Awards: The song is listed among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Bruce Springsteen

MC Sar & The Real McCoy – Another Night

“Another Night” is a multi platinum-selling crossover hit by the German Eurodance and pop music project Real McCoy (also known as M.C. Sar & The Real McCoy). The single is featured on their hit album, Another Night (1995), which was the American release of the project’s second album, Space Invaders.Initially a sleeper hit in Germany in 1993, it would go on to reach the top three in the United Kingdom and United States in late 1994. It also peaked at number one in Australia, Scotland, and Zimbabwe, as well as on the Canadian and US dance charts. Real McCoy

May 10th Barbra Streisand’s begins 1st concert tour in 30 years, at the Capitol Centre in Landover, Maryland (after “warm-up” shows in Las Vegas and London)

UB40 – Falling in love with you

“Falling in love with you” was written by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore, and George David Weiss. The melody is based on the popular French love song “Plaisir d’amour,” composed in 1784 by Jean-Paul-Edwige Martini, and was also covered by Elvis Presley in 1961. The UB40’s version of this song peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and remained there for seven weeks. The song topped the charts around the globe, hitting #1 in the UK for two consecutive weeks. It also appears on the soundtrack of the movie “Silver,” the trailer for “Fools Rush In,” and an episode of “Hindsight.” The song and the band appeared in the 1997 film “Speed 2: Cruise Control.”

June 25th Glastonbury Festival in Pilton, England opens: The Black Crowes, and The Kinks headline; other performers include Winton Marsalis, Robert Plant, Velvet Underground, Hothouse Flowers, Van Morrison, John Prine, Rolf Harris, Lenny Kravitz, and Barenaked Ladies 

Mariah Carey – Dreamlover

“Dreamlover” was the lead single from Carey’s third studio album, “Music Box,” penned by Carey and Dave Hall and was Carey’s seventh #1 single on Billboard’s Hot 100 where it remained for eight consecutive weeks. It spent 26 weeks in the top 40 and was ranked #8 on the Hot 100 1993 Year-End Charts and #20 on the Decade-End Charts. In Canada, “Dreamlover” became Carey’s fifth #1 single, where it stayed for six consecutive weeks. It peaked at #9 on the UK Singles Chart.

July 5th Icelandic musician Björk releases her 1st solo album “Debut”

Meatloaf – I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)

“I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” is a song written by Jim Steinman, and recorded by Meat Loaf with Lorraine Crosby. The song was released in August 1993 as the first single from the album Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell. The last six verses feature Crosby, who was credited only as “Mrs. Loud” in the album notes.

The power ballad was a commercial success, reaching number one in 28 countries.The single was certified platinum in the United States and became Meat Loaf’s first and only number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the UK Singles Chart, and was the best-selling single of 1993 in the United Kingdom. The song earned Meat Loaf a Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo. Meat Loaf

September 15th Single “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” sung by Meat Loaf and composed by Jim Steinman is released. Goes on to be No. 1 in 28 countries.

The Proclaimers I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)

“I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” is a song written and performed by Scottish duo the Proclaimers, and first released as the lead single from their 1988 album Sunshine on Leith. The song reached number 11 in the UK Singles Chart on its initial release and has since become their most popular song worldwide. It was a number 1 hit in Iceland, then number 1 in Australia and New Zealand in early 1990.

In 1993, following its appearance in the American film Benny & Joon, the song was released in North America and many other countries around the world. It reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States in August 1993, as well as number 8 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart and number 25 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart; it also reached number 4 in Canada. In 2007, the Proclaimers re-recorded the song with English comedians Peter Kay and Matt Lucas for the UK’s Comic Relief charity telethon, scoring a number one hit in the UK and outperforming their original UK chart run. Sting – If I ever lose my faith in you

“If I ever lose my faith in you” was released as the lead single from Sting’s fourth studio album “Ten Summoner’s Tales.” The song reached #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and made the top 40 in several European countries. In Canada the song peaked at #1, spending three weeks atop the RPM Top Singles chart and finishing 1993 as Canada’s fourth-most-successful single. It remains one of Sting’s signature songs. In 1994 the song won Sting a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Performance and was nominated for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

January 8th Elvis Presley Commemorative Postage Stamp goes on sale

Whitney Houston – I will always love you

“I will always love you” spent 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, which at the time was a record. It is also the longest running number-one single from a soundtrack album. The song was #1 on the Hot 100, Adult Contemporary, and R&B chart simultaneously for a record-equaling five weeks. The song stayed at #1 in the U.S. throughout January and February 1993, making it the first time Billboard did not rank a new number-one single until March of the new year and was the year-end #1 single of the year.

Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” was also a massive international hit, topping the singles charts in almost every country, including the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles where it spent 13 weeks at the top. Houston won two Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. In 2015, “I Will Always Love You” was named the #1 Song of the Rock Era in the book “The Top 500 Songs of the Rock Era: 1955 – 2015.” In 2020, “I Will Always Love You” was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

February 10th “Michael Jackson Talks To Oprah Winfrey” airs on ABC & drew an astounding 39.3 rating/56 share, 90 million people

Ace of Base – All That She Wants

“All That She Wants” is a song by Swedish group Ace of Base. It was released in Scandinavia in 1992 as the second single from their first studio album, Happy Nation, and in the following year, it was released as the first single from the 1993 album The Sign in North America. Produced by Denniz Pop, Jonas Berggren, and Ulf Ekberg, the drum beat was inspired by the Kayo song “Another Mother”. The song was a commercial success, reaching the top of the charts in many countries, including Denmark, Germany, the UK and Australia.  Ace of Base 

February 24th 35th Grammy Awards: Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton wins

Haddaway – What is Love

“What Is Love” is a song recorded by Trinidadian-German Eurodance artist Haddaway for his debut album, The Album. The song was released on 8 May 1993 as the album’s lead single. It was a massive hit in Europe, becoming a number-one hit in at least 13 countries and reaching number two in Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Outside Europe, the single was moderately successful, reaching number 11 in the United States, number 12 in Australia, number 17 in Canada, and number 48 in New Zealand. Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Music Column – The Breakfast Show with William Price King and Sally Cronin – Chart Hits 1977 – Part Two – Stevie Wonder, Manhattan Transfer, Elton John, Barbra Streisand

Each week William and I select two top hits from the charts in the US and UK starting with 1960 for two weeks followed by 1961 etc..through to 1985. Stevie Wonder – Sir Duke

“Sir Duke” is from the “Songs in the Key of Life” album. It topped the charts in the US and around the world. “Sir Duke” was written as a tribute to Duke Ellington, and refers to Jazz greats Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong, and Ella Fitzgerald.

News Event: June 26th Elvis Presley sings in Indianapolis, the last performance of his career

Manhattan Transfer – Chanson d’Amour

“Chanson d’Amour” (French for Love Song), written by Wayne Shanklin, was an international hit, reaching #1 in the UK and other European countries as well as in Australia. This was the Manhattan Transfer’s most widespread international success, despite being only moderately successful in the US, where the song peaked at #16 on Billboard’s Easy Listening chart.

Queen – We Are The Champions

“We Are the Champions” is a song by the British rock band Queen, first released on their 1977 album News of the World. Written by lead singer Freddie Mercury, it is considered one of rock’s most recognisable anthems. The song was a worldwide success, reaching number two in the UK Singles Chart, number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, number three in Canada and the top ten in many other countries. In 2009 it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Barbra Streisand – Evergreen

“Evergreen” (also called “Love Theme from A Star Is Born”) is the theme song from the 1976 film A Star Is Born. It was composed and performed by Barbra Streisand with lyrics by Paul Williams, and arranged by Ian Freebairn-Smith. The song was released on the soundtrack album to A Star Is Born.

In the US, the single became Streisand’s second number 1 single and spent three weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and six weeks atop the easy listening chart.  In its year-end chart for 1977, Billboard ranked the platinum-certified single, which sold more than 2 million copies, the fourth-biggest single of the year. William Price King is an American jazz singer, crooner, and composer.

His interest in music began at an early age when he studied piano and clarinet in high school. At Morehouse College in Atlanta where he grew up, he sang in the Glee Club and studied classical music. After graduation he went off to the Yale School of Music where he earned a Masters degree. From there he journeyed to New York where he created a jazz trio ‘Au Naturel’ which performed in some of the hottest venues in Manhattan including gigs on Broadway and the famous ‘Rainbow Room.’ These gigs opened doors for performances in Montreal and a European tour.

While touring Europe he met a lovely French lady, Jeanne Maïstre, who, a year later became his wife. King left the group ‘Au Naturel’ and settled in the south of France where he started a new life on the French Riviera, opening his own music school – the “Price King Ecole Internationale de Chant.” He has had the pleasure over the years of seeing many of his students excel as singers on a professional level, and some going on to become national celebrities. He continues to coach young singers today, in his spare time.

Sally Cronin is an author, blogger and broadcaster who enjoyed four years as part of the team on Onda Cero International’s English speaking morning show in Marbella and then for two years as a presenter on Expressfm the local radio station in Portsmouth. She co-presented two ‘Drive Time’ shows a week with Adrian Knight, hosted the live Thursday Afternoon Show and The Sunday Morning Show guests including musicians and authors. Following this she became Station Director for a local internet television station for two years, producing and presenting the daily news segment, outside broadcasts and co-presenting the Adrian and Sally chat show live on Friday evenings.

She and her husband David have now returned to Ireland where they live on the Wexford Coast where she blogs and continues to write books.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Music Column – The Breakfast Show with William Price King and Sally Cronin – Chart Hits 1977 – Part One – Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Carly Simon and Donna Summer

Each week William and I select two top hits from the charts in the US and UK starting with 1960 for two weeks followed by 1961 etc..through to 1985. We will also include some of the notable events in those years for the up and coming stars who were centre stage at the time. We are now in the 1970s.

William is now on a family break but will be back with us again in September, wishing him a wonderful summer.

Fleetwood Mac – Dreams

“Dreams” is from the album “Rumours.” It reached the #1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 in the US and in Canada and sold over a million copies worldwide. In the UK it peaked at #24 and stayed in the top 40 for eight weeks.

News Event: March 23rd Elvis Presley begins his final concert tour

Eagles – Hotel California

“Hotel California” won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year. According to the Eagles, the lyrics of the song describe their interpretation of the “high life” in Los Angeles. The song peaked at #1 in the US and many countries around the world. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it #49 on its list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”
It was named one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s “500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.” Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

News Event:  April 2nd Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” album goes to No. 1 & stays atop charts for 31 weeks

Carly Simon – Nobody Does It Better.

“Nobody Does It Better” is a power ballad composed by Marvin Hamlisch with lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager. It was recorded by Carly Simon as the theme song for the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me.  The song was released as a single from the film’s soundtrack album.

The song is Simon’s longest-charting hit, as well the most successful hit of hers that she did not write herself. Her earlier hit “You’re So Vain” spent three weeks at No. 1; however, its chart run was two months shorter than that of “Nobody Does It Better”. Carly Simon

News Event: May 2nd Revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s musical “The King & I”‘, with Yul Brynner reprising the role he created in 1951, opens at Uris Theater, NYC; runs for 695 performances

Donna Summer – I Feel Love

“I Feel Love” is a song by Donna Summer. Produced and co-written by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, it was recorded for Summer’s fifth studio album, I Remember Yesterday (1977). “I Feel Love” was released May 1, 1977, as the B-side to the single “Can’t We Just Sit Down (And Talk It Over)”, which rose to #20 on the US R&B chart. Two months later, the sides were flipped and the single was reissued. “I Feel Love” was a number one hit in Australia, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, number three in Germany and Italy, number six on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and also topped the charts in many other countries.
