Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – Author Update #Reviews – Jan Sikes, Balroop Singh, Vashti Quiroz-Vega, Annika Perry

Welcome to the first of the author updates this week with recent reviews for authors on the shelves of the bookstore.

And the first author today is Jan Sikes,  with a recent review for Flowers and Stone...

About Flowers and Stone

The epic love story begins here!

A hot Texas summer, dim-lit honky-tonk bars, a young naïve fledgling go-go dancer and a wild rebel Texas musician set the stage for this story.

1970 in Abilene, Texas finds young Darlina Flowers trying to figure out how to fit into the world she is most attracted to – the nightlife, live music and go-go dancing. Luke Stone, a veteran Texas Musician believes he’s lost all reason to care about his music career, his health and most especially his heart. A chance meeting with Darlina changes everything. But, is it too late? Has fate already determined the outcome? Join Luke and Darlina on a passion-filled journey up and down Texas roads while Luke and his band entertain crowds along the way.

Can Darlina Flowers ever hope to fit in to this strange new world and even more important, can she trust Luke Stone with her heart?

Luke Stone, a good man who has made a career of bad decisions, falls as completely in love with Darlina as she does with him. But is it too late?

Will their eternal unyielding love survive the test of time, distance and iron bars?

One of the recent reviews for the book

Flowers and Stone is the first book of the series I read. This fictional novel is based on the real lives of Jan and Rick Sikes portrayed as Darlina Flowers and Luke Stone. The story quickly revealed that the nineteen-year-old girl Darlina fell in love with the thirty-six-year-old country western singer Luke Stone the first time of meeting him. She soon found out he was married with children and seeing another woman, but it didn’t deter her love for him. Luke had drinking and other problems but fell that Darlina was the best thing happened in his life. Luke was in jail for a crime he didn’t commit, but Jan’s love was deep and strong and knew that he was the man she would love forever.

Jan’s excellent writing takes the readers to the scenes and shows the twists and turns of their journey. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

The next book with a recent review is Allow Yourself to be a Better Person by Balroop Singh.

51hws7e9y-l-_uy250_About the book

Do you think you are a good person? Would you like to meet your better self?

Welcome to the vast vistas that this book unravels before you by highlighting the shaded areas that could never get your attention.

Enhancement of personality is a long process, which starts only when we acknowledge the need for it. Often we detest looking at our imperfections and if somebody is professionally successful, the thought doesn’t even strike.

This book enlightens you about the goodness, which lies dormant within us till we make an effort to explore it. It exhorts you to introspect and accept natural human failings. It guides you towards the metamorphosis that could make you an endearing personality.

One of the recent reviews for Allow Yourself to be a Better person

As a follower of a blog written by Balroop Singh, I decided to purchase one of her non-fiction books this month: Allow Yourself To Be A Better Person. In this self-help and advice collection, Singh provides readers with ~100 pages of her thoughts and research on how to live a better life. By sharing personal stories of her own life and those of people she’s met, Singh offers ways for readers to consider changing behaviors so that they are happier and stronger individuals.

Every once in a while, it’s good to pick up a book like this; much of the content are things we know or have been taught over the years, but that we also forget. Singh adds context and value behind the words, ensuring we have example and clearer understanding of different interpretations. We know not to take our anger out on others, but we do it still… sometimes unwittingly, and at others, on purpose. Singh reminds us why, shares alternative approaches, and provides a way of reacting to our own emotions with a twist.

I enjoyed reading this extension of her blog so that I could be reminded of a few things that are always a benefit to our lives. It’s obvious that she took a lot of time to craft the structure and advice, and she should be commended. I’m glad I took a chance on reading her book and recommend it to others who are struggling to find a bit of light or think differently about some problems and painful situations in their life.

The next author with a recent review is Vashti Quiroz-Vega with her latest release – a short story – Memoir of a Mad Woman.

About the book

A novelette from the award-winning author of The Fall of Lilith and Son of the Serpent, Vashti Quiroz-Vega.

Who can explain how madness begins?

This is the story of Emma. Reared by a religious fanatic, orphaned at a young age and sent to a mental institution and an orphanage. Molested and betrayed by the people who should be watching over her…

Who can say that madness has no logic?

During a fight, Emma’s best friend punched her in the abdomen. Since then, Emma has believed there’s something damaged inside of her.

Every month… she bleeds. She tries to fight it all her life, but the pain and the blood return twenty-eight days later… and the cycle begins again.

But Emma, even in her madness, knows how to take care of herself.
She knows how to make things right…

You may not agree… But, who can reason with insanity?

Read this tragic but fascinating tale and traverse the labyrinthine passages of madness.

One of the recent reviews for the book

Wow! Such a powerful story, deeply rounded characters and a plot sewn up beautifully at the end in this short novelette. The subject matter is disturbing and I found myself skimming over the torturous parts because this is normally a genre I try to stay away from because of the disturbing abuse. But I felt compelled to read this because Vashti Quiroz-Vega is one of my favorite writers to read.

The mood is dark, and poor damaged Emma definitely was born into a world of hard knocks. Emma orphaned as a young child, ends up in an orphanage where people do bad things to children. She endures bullying, abuse to the max, yet something within her gives her the courage to soldier on until that one spark of madness brings out the revenge in her – the just desserts deliciously deserved for all those who inflicted pain on her.

It’s not very often we find ourselves rooting for evil, but when you’ve glimpsed into the life of this poor, neglected and abused little girl, you too will find yourself screaming for justice as each horrific event done onto her becomes a spectator event. Emma’s eventual unleashing becomes the only way to end the never-ending madness of her world. A most chilling read that kept me reading till the end in one sitting. #Recommended.

The final author with a recent review is Annika Perry for her collection of stories – The Storyteller Speaks.

About The Storyteller Speaks
It only takes one event to change a life. What is that action, decision, occurrence? Whose life is affected? Changed forever? In this eclectic mix of 21 short stories, flash fiction and poetry the pendulum swings between first love and murder, from soul-destroying grief to reconciliation. The tales veer from the sweet satisfaction of revenge to new beginnings, from heart-breaking miscarriages of justice to heart-warming Christmas misadventure. One common thread binds them all; the belief that there is no such thing as an ordinary life; they’re all extraordinary. Open your hearts and minds as The Storyteller Speaks.

A recent review for the collection on Goodreads

Jun 20, 2019 Darlene Foster rated it Four Stars

Sometimes it is good to sit down and read some short stories. So much can be said in a few carefully chosen words. Which is the case in this delightful collection of stories and poems. Stories about a first and forever love, stolen flowers, forgotten chillies, frozen landscapes and a miscarriage of justice evoke a wide range of emotions. My favourite story is the Loss of A Patriarch, depicting a family saying goodbye to a much-loved family member told in such a heartwarming manner it is sure to produce tears. For a first time author, this is a wonderful collection showing a range of writing skills.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – Author Update #Reviews – Vashti-Quiroz-Vega, Tony Riches, Iain Kelly and Sacha Black

Welcome to the second edition of the author update this week.. and the first author with a recent review is Vashti Quiroz-Vega for Son of the Serpent (Fantasy Angels Series)

About Son of the Serpent

In Son of the Serpent, award-winning author Vashti Quiroz-Vega crafts another fascinating glimpse into the dark, compelling world of fallen angels and demons, revealing more about their untold stories.

The war in heaven might be over, but the ambitions of the fallen angel Lilith reach far across the roots of history. Will there be a being powerful enough to stop her evil influence before the destruction of mankind?

Dracúl knows he is the son of Satan, but the rest of his memory has been taken from him. Alone and frightened, he awakens in a forest, beginning a quest to piece together who he is. The world he encounters is cruel, but he yearns to belong and find companionship. With each step he takes, another missing piece of his memory falls into place, revealing a truth that is ever more troubling . . .

A truth that will turn his quest for meaning into one fueled by the hot-blooded thirst for revenge. A truth that leads him to Lilith, the most wicked and ruthless of fallen angels and one he soon will have every reason to hate. His quest will consume him, perhaps ruin his life, but somehow Dracúl is determined to find both belonging and vengeance—to be good, in spite of his evil nature and the dark secrets that haunt him every step of the way.

One of the recent reviews for the book

Wendy Scott Multi-Award Winning Author 4.0 out of 5 stars Devilishly depraved April 1, 2019

In book one, God expelled Lilith from heaven – for very good reasons! But Lilith is more slippery than a saw-scaled viper lathered in olive oil. A complex and cruel character, the depths of her depravity is deeper than the bottomless pits of hell. Her son, Dracul, riles against his evil heritage, intent on tracking Lilith down and claiming his vengeance. This author has taken biblical events and rewritten them in her own unique style – the ancient world through her eyes is a riveting experience. As an author, I paused more than once to admire the prose, a particular phrase or word choice which was so cleverly crafted I experience author-envy (I wish I’d written that!). Book two in the Fantasy Angels Series, Son of Serpent, is a distinctively dark and twisted tale suitable for mature readers.

The next author with a recent review for his latest historical novel is Tony Riches for Brandon Tudor Night

About Brandon: Tudor Knight

From the author of the international best-selling Tudor Trilogy:

Handsome, charismatic and a champion jouster, Sir Charles Brandon is the epitome of a Tudor Knight. A favourite of King Henry VIII, Brandon has a secret. He has fallen in love with Henry’s sister, Mary Tudor, the beautiful widowed Queen of France, and risks everything to marry her without the King’s consent.

Brandon becomes Duke of Suffolk, but his loyalty is tested fighting Henry’s wars in France. Mary’s public support for Queen Catherine of Aragon brings Brandon into dangerous conflict with the ambitious Boleyn family and the king’s new right-hand man, Thomas Cromwell.

Torn between duty to his family and loyalty to the king, Brandon faces an impossible decision: can he accept Anne Boleyn as his new queen?

One of the recent reviews for the book

We first meet Charles Brandon as a twenty-one year old, newly appointed to the King’s Spears. His father, who was Henry Tudor’s standard bearer, died during the Battle of Bosworth, and Brandon had been brought up at the court of Henry Vll. He became good friends with the young Prince Harry, who was later crowned Henry VIII, teaching him to joust and was one of his favoured group of courtiers.

Always finding himself lacking funds, Brandon incurred huge debts from borrowing money, primarily from Thomas Wolsey and afterwards Thomas Cromwell. His first marriage was a means to an end—Lady Margaret Mortimer had wealth and much land.

I knew next to nothing about Charles Brandon, really only that he married Mary Tudor. It was interesting to follow his story and the research was obviously detailed. Brandon worked his way up the ranks until he became Duke of Suffolk. He and Mary took a huge risk by getting married before asking Henry’s consent, especially after Brandon had been warned not to unleash his charm upon Mary. Henry had someone in mind for his sister for political reasons. Incurring his wrath was a dangerous thing and could be classed as treason. As it was, Henry made his displeasure felt by excluding them from court and keeping his distance for a while.

Mary’s unwavering and public support of Queen Catherine of Aragon caused friction between Brandon and the Boleyn family, whose fortunes were on the rise, not to mention Henry’s new chief advisor, Thomas Cromwell. Brandon had to keep in mind his responsibilities to his family as well as loyalty to Henry when it became obvious Ann Boleyn would be the next queen.

The story centres around Brandon and I enjoyed the way Tony Riches incorporates details of life at court with all its intrigue and danger into the narrative. Brandon is a well fleshed out character who managed to navigate his way through the unpredictability of court politics. He led a full life and was lucky enough to marry twice for love.

I chose to read and review Brandon – Tudor Knight for Rosie Amber’s book review team, based on a digital copy kindly supplied by the author.

Now a recent review for the political dystopian thriller,  A Justified State by Iain Kelly

About A Justified State

In the future, The State is ruled by the socially reformist Central Party Alliance. Poverty and homelessness have been eradicated, but overpopulation, an energy crisis and an ongoing overseas war are threatening the stability of the country. When a local politician is assassinated, Detective Danny Samson finds himself thrust into the middle of the investigation.

Still grieving for his dead wife and children, Danny tracks down the assassin, an ex-military sniper called Gabriella, only to discover she may not be the real villain. The secret behind the murder of one politician may bring down the entire ruling Party, and Danny soon learns those in power will go to any lengths to protect The State. Joining forces with Gabriella and the mysterious government agent Phillips, Danny must unearth the truth and bring the guilty to justice, before they catch up with him first.

One of the recent reviews for the book

At the heart of this novel is a fast-paced crime story. It is set in the near future and should be a warning to us all, that if we are not careful, this is what will become of the world! The low resources leading to government intervention, uniform housing, synthetic food rations and self-driving cars provide the thought-provoking scene. The characters are well-penned and believable. The plot intrigued me and I was, genuinely, eager to find out what happened next.I look forward to reading a sequel and would recommend this to all.

JKS  5.0 out of 5 starsDisturbing but well-written March 17, 2019

This short story takes the reader on a journey to the dark side. The place inside a mind that had suffered abuse beyond imagination and how she fought back. This author made me care about the character despite her horrible deeds. The abuse started when she was a young child and even though the author never came out and said it, it was known that this child killed and burned her mother. And, felt no remorse. This carried on through the horrible abuse that was inflicted upon Emma and how she exacted revenge.

This is a well-written story that can be read in less than an hour. It draws you in and makes you feel as if you are there watching the events unfold. You want to scream for justice for her, but justice doesn’t come until she makes it happen. I highly recommend this short story! Be prepared for a chilling read!

The next book with a recent review the novella Swimming for Profit and Pleasure (The Port Naain Intelligencer) by Jim Webster.

About the novella

Benor learns a new trade, joins the second hand book trade, attempts to rescue a friend and awakens a terror from the deep. Meddling in the affairs of mages is unwise, even if they have been assumed to be dead for centuries.

One of the recent reviews for Swimming for Profit and Pleasure

Robbie Cheadle 5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and action packed short novella March 22, 2019

I am a fan of Jim Webster’s as I really enjoy his very British humour. In this action packed tale, Benor Dorfinngil is the main character and has a thrilling adventure when he is hired to do some diving by the mysterious and wealthy Westfran family who live in the more rural village of Stone Harbour. We are introduced to the family through Benor’s friend, poet Tallis Steelyard, who was invited to attend one of their soirees and who made it his business to escape from their house as quickly as possible. There do not appear to be any menfolk in the family and the women are all aloof and have a stiff and unyielding way of walking and holding themselves. It is all rather strange.

Benor becomes involved with the family after he takes a job working in a book shop and purchases an interesting box of books, including a 500 year old book written by an ancestor of the Westfran family. It soon becomes apparent that this book holds family secrets and the Westfran women will stop at nothing to get it back.

What has happened to Benor’s friend, Timms, the previous diver hired by the Westfrans and who has suddenly disappeared? What secrets do the harbour hold that it attracts such an unusually high number of male squid and why do the Westfran women all look so similar? Find out by reading this interesting and well written novella.

And finally today I would like to share a recent review for one of my short story collections – What’s in a Name? Volume Two which I was obviously delighted to receive.

About the collection

Our legacy is not always about money or fame, but rather in the way that people remember our name after we have gone. In these sixteen short stories we discover the reasons why special men and women will stay in the hearts and minds of those who have met them. Romance, revenge and sacrifice all play their part in the lives of these characters.

Kenneth watches the love of his life dance on New Year’s Eve while Lily plants very special flowers every spring for her father. Martha helps out a work colleague as Norman steps back out into the world to make a difference. Owen brings light into a house and Patrick risks his life in the skies over Britain and holds back from telling a beautiful redhead that he loves her.

Meet Queenie and Rosemary who have both lost their husbands and must face a very different future. One that will take courage and the use of new technology.

Sonia is an entitled princess whose father has reached the end of his tether and Theresa has to deal with a bully in the checkout. Usher is an arrogant narcissist with a docile wife and is used to getting his own way and Vanessa worries about the future of her relationship with her teenage son.

Walter is a loner and is happy with just his dog for company, Xenia is the long awaited first baby of a young couple. Yves is a dashing romeo who has the tables turned on him unexpectedly and Zoe… Well she can see into the future.

In one way or another all these characters will be remembered by those whose lives they have touched

The recent review for the collection.

James‘s review Five Stars on Goodreads Mar 19, 2019

Sometimes the second book in a series or multi-volume collection of short stories doesn’t live up to the first. I can say with certainty that’s not the case with volume 2 of ‘What’s in a Name?’ by Sally Cronin. In this collection of stories of life and romance, following names that start with the letters K through Z, Cronin delivers a plethora of immersive, delightful, and intense characters.

I truly don’t know how she manages to pack such distinct and complex drama in a story that’s usually under ten pages. From the first few lines to the closing words, I was drawn in by each of the tales in this collection. There is something about the power an author chooses in certain words which helps create the proper ambiance for a setting, draw out the intrigue in the plot, and ignite a reader’s passions.

From the descriptions to the connections between a few of the stories (not in terms of characters but themes and approaches to decisions), Cronin provides us with a bevy of situations to consider… how would we react if such a problem found its way into our lives? Would we get revenge? What kind of sacrifices could we live with? What does love mean when it comes with strings?

I highly recommend both collections, as you’ll see some growth and evolution from volume one to two. Now I’ll have to look over her canon of other books to see what might be something else I want to read.

Together with Dee’s intuitive cat, Mollie, the Astral Investigation Team returns to the past to aid the boy and the shopkeeper, who are caught in a time warp of death and betrayal. This is but the first episode of their adventures. They will be able to travel back in time and to the future, never knowing where or when they’ll be going or how to help doomed souls. If they don’t stop the repetitive vicious cycles, these damaged, bitter entities will be reborn to destroy society as we know it. As the series begins, there is much they have to learn about each other and the astral plane. Can history be rewritten, even after the fact? Can the future be changed to prevent the predicted apocalypse? Not all souls can be saved, and some do not wish it. Join these Astral Investigators on their sojourns to different realities and other planes of existence.

A recent review for the book

Delilah, Astral Investigator: Infinity Series revolves around a young woman named Deliah who is afflicted with asthma, her angora cat named Molly, and a young man, Bartholomew, who steps from the pages of America history. The three combine their efforts and end up changing history.

The story revolves around a shopkeeper and a boy and an event that profoundly affects Delilah. Each night, when she falls asleep, she dreams of this fateful event, reliving the incident in excruciating detail.

However, One night Delilah’s dream changes, and she witnesses a different dream/occurrence where Bartholomew is about to be murdered. She reaches through time to pull him into her dream where she saves him. Once Bartholomew adjusts to this time continuum, the unusual man from the past becomes her friend.

I enjoyed the story and how this author’s interpretation of time travel allowed a ripple effect to change past events. The storyline delves into the topics of lucid dreaming and astral projection, which really add a paranormal glint to solving the mystery.

The characters were engaging and relatable. I found Bartholomew’s dilemmas in coping with the modern world to be well thought out and at times humorous. This author has a penchant for realism, so some of the dialogue is written in an English dialect which I thought added to the story.

I do hope the author continues the series because the time travel cornerstone of the story is intriguing. There are so many possibilities!

And the second author today with a glowing review is Vashti Quiroz-Vega for her latest release, Son of the Serpent (Fantasy Angels Series)

I haven’t read Vashti Quiroz-Vega’s Angels Series Book 1, The Fall of Lilith. But Son of the Serpent read well as a stand-alone book. The book begins with the young Dracúl, son of the Serpent, woke up alone in a cave. He seemed to have no influence of any evil doing. It took a while for him to figure out what he was. Driven by hunger, he devoured an animal. Reinforced by satisfaction, he continued to kill and fill.

The human-like nature urged Dracúl to search for his father and mother. Through the course of time, his memories became clear and revealed that his mother Lilith tried to end his life and left him to death. Lilith, the fallen angel told her version of the story intermittently between chapters starting from Chapter 6.

There was a magical moment when Dracúl turned his creature likeness into a human form, and he could change back and forth between fiend and human. The book included romantic encounter between Dracúl and Coralia, daughter of the merman Dagon, and many Biblical characters in the Old Testament with a twist and turn of fantasy tales. Being a fiend, Dracúl seemed to show a lot of positive emotions and compassion, at the same time plotted vengeance toward his fallen angel mother. In the final chapter, God’s messengers stopped his act, urged him to leave the justice to God.

I find Vashti’s imagination and detailed description of characters and story lines fascinating. I’ve purchased Book 1, The Fall of Lilith and look forward to reading it as well.

The final author today with a recent review is Olga Nunez Miret for  Book Four (including the prequel) in the Escaping Psychiatry Series: Deadly Quotes.

About Deadly Quotes

Death by natural causes. That was the official explanation. Until they found the quote.
Killing isn’t as difficult as people think. In fact it can be quite easy.

Was it a novel the dead man had been writing? Was it an eerie suicide note? Was it murder?
Mary Miller and Leah Deakin, friends and doctors, are not sure there is a case worth investigating but are intrigued. Could a serial killer behind bars have orchestrated another killing spree? Can the clues be found in his own autobiography?

The fourth book in the Escaping Psychiatry series sees Mary, psychiatrist, survivor of attempted rape and murder, and amateur crime investigator by default, team up with Leah Deakin, an FBI pathologist, in a case that pitches them against a man who loves to play mortal games. Will they be able to stop him? And at what price?

If you enjoy reading gripping psychological thrillers, prefer strong female protagonists, feel oddly attracted to ultraintelligent and twisted baddies, and can’t get enough of challenging mysteries, you shouldn’t miss this novel.

One of the recent reviews for Deadly Quotes

I had no idea what to expect when I read this book. My interest to read it came because I have spent a career providing psychological assessment and treatment. The title got me. Could I “escape psychiatry?” I was taken by the main character, Mary, for a variety of reasons. First her resolve and bravery was illustrated brilliantly by the way she locked eye contact with the evil criminal during their interviews. Countless times I have held such a gaze with a client being horribly dysfunctional. Second, who wouldn’t admire someone who had little prove: “She had reached a moment in her life when she preferred her excitement in small doses.” Apparently there are other books with this character in them. I look forward to getting to know her better. And you should too.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore Update #Reviews – Teagan Riordain Geneviene, Robbie Cheadle, Elsie Hancy Eaton and Vashti Quiroz-Vega

Welcome to the first of the Cafe updates this week and after one of the busiest book selling season of the year, it is great to see the reviews coming in.

The first author with a recent review is Teagan Riordain Geneviene in the second book of her series Atonement in Bloom which was released in October last year.

About Atonement in Bloom

“Atonement in Bloom” continues the urban fantasy from the point where “Atonement, Tennessee” ended. The quaint town was stranger than Ralda Lawton could have imagined. The local population included supernatural beings of the fae variety. Although only she and a few others knew about that.In a past life, Ralda ― Esmeralda had been involved in something with those supernaturals and it had carried into her present life. In Atonement, Tennessee, that almost got her killed. Now she has new problems, and new supes to complicate matters.Atonement in Bloom continues the misadventures of Ralda, her friends, and neighbors in the small (but far from peaceful) town of Atonement, Tennessee. Her old house and cemetery are still there, along with Lilith the cat, quirky townsfolk, and assorted supernaturals. Now Lilith the calico sniffs out a strange beast.Fae foolery backfires. A friend is abducted. On a cold December day, Atonement, Tennessee comes into bloom.

One of the recent reviews for the book

“Atonement in Bloom” is the second book in the Atonement series and begins where “Atonement, Tennessee” left off. Ralda Lawton is settling into her new home, has friends and found supernatural beings, too. I loved the narrative going between Ralda and Lilith her cat. I appreciated seeing Atonement through the cat’s eyes. I’d like to think my cats are as observant as this calico. With Faes, glowing pigs, and failed magic mixed with mystery, a small town, a sudden appearing house, and a kidnapping–it was a hard story to put down. The relationship between Ralda and Bethany is endearing. They retained their memories from the first book, while others didn’t. Then help came from an unexpected ally, which added a new dynamic to their relationship. I loved the Tea Romm where Ralda and her friends met. I could picture myself having a cup of tea there easily. This is an imaginative, fun read that I highly recommend, but I’d start with “Atonement, Tennessee” first if you haven’t read it, so you don’t miss anything.

Absolutely delighted to feature While the Bombs Fell which is written by Robbie Cheadle and her mother Elsie Hancy Eaton.

About While the Bombs Fell

What was it like for children growing up in rural Suffolk during World War 2?

Elsie and her family live in a small double-storey cottage in Bungay, Suffolk. Every night she lies awake listening anxiously for the sound of the German bomber planes. Often they come and the air raid siren sounds signalling that the family must leave their beds and venture out to the air raid shelter in the garden.

Despite the war raging across the English channel, daily life continues with its highlights, such as Christmas and the traditional Boxing Day fox hunt, and its wary moments when Elsie learns the stories of Jack Frost and the ghostly and terrifying Black Shuck that haunts the coastline and countryside of East Anglia.

Includes some authentic World War 2 recipes

One of the recent reviews on Goodreads

What a lovely, poignant book! It’s the only one I’ve read that describes what life was like for very young children growing up during World War Two. There is also quite a bit of English history included, which I found quite interesting. The wartime recipes are a nice touch.
It’s told from the perspective of a girl aged 4-6 years old, and focuses mainly on the daily life of kids living through horrendous times, without truly understanding what was going on in the adult world. Many of the stories told reminded me of my Dutch father-in-law’s descriptions of growing up during WWII in the Netherlands.

It’s appropriate for young children as well as young readers. Fascinating read.

And the third author today with a glowing review is Vashti Quiroz-Vega for the latest release, Son of the Serpent (Fantasy Angels Series)

One of the recent reviews for the book

The second book in the Fantasy Angel Series, “Son of the Serpent” begins where the first book left off. The abandoned son of Lilith and Satan, Dracul, awakens in a forest, not far from the cave where he was left to die.

Dracul’s name gives the reader a hint as to how he must survive – by draining the blood of animals for sustenance. Being all alone, the young man craves love and attention. He sets off in search of his mother, trying to understand how she could abandon her child.

The novel, written in the first-person, fluctuates between Dracul’s viewpoint and that of his mother, Lilith. At first, I thought this perspective was limited, but on further reflection, I realized the author’s motivation.

Most Bible tales are not told in the first person. Instead, they are retellings of past events, written by someone who was not present when the incidents occurred. However, this author chose to tell her story from the perspective of Dracul and his mother. In this way, the reader has the opportunity to understand the (perceived) character’s feelings and motivations, as if they were walking alongside them. I found this attitude to be refreshing.

The reader also takes a deep dive into the psyche of a creature conceived by two demon parents. Initially, Dracul is drawn toward the light instead of the dark, setting up great tension in his quest for justice. His pain accelerates, and eventually, he becomes obsessed with vengeance.

However, don’t be fooled into thinking that this tale is all love and light. The story is dark as pitch even as it skillfully weaves in characters and events from the Bible. I thought the ending was spectacular!

Some of the characters from the first book appear in the second book, tying the storyline together. My advice: read book one first. I highly recommend both books!

One of the reviews for The Fall of Lilith (Book One)

May 28, 2018 Yvette Calleiro rated it Amazing

I really enjoyed this book. I love when stories put a spin on biblical/historical stories, and this one definitely kept me entertained. Lilith is a deceptive little thing, and I loved reading about her journey, though I will admit that Gadreel held most of my affection throughout the book (which would probably really anger Lilith…lol!).

The author does an incredible job in character building. Each and every one of her characters is unique and has a voice of his/her own. The author writes in third person omniscient, and many might even call it head-hopping because she shares the thoughts and feelings of each character, but she does a brilliant job of making it clear whose point of view is being used. I enjoyed being able to experience each character’s emotions and reactions in the moment.

The book is also very descriptive, and the author did a great job of world-building. The areas of paradise were written in such a way that I just wanted to lose myself in them, whereas the areas of danger were written so that the reader could truly feel the angst of the characters.

The story line is fantastic! I loved how deceptive and despicable Lilith was, how vain (and stupid) Lucifer was, and how many angels fell into the webs that they wove. I loved their individual punishments and how they reacted to them. My heart broke for Gadreel and then hardened against her and then softened again.

Because I know that a book two is coming, I’m looking forward to reading more about Gadreel and Dragon, and I cannot wait for Lucifer and Dracul to learn about Lilith’s newest deception!

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – Author Update – Wendy Unsworth, Don Massenzio and Vashti Quiroz-Vega

Welcome to the first of the author updates this week and our first author with news to share is Wendy Unsworth with a review for her recently released novel Dirty Work (Berrywood Book Three)

About Dirty Work

A shallow grave.
A body to find.
But no one is looking.

Caroline Duke and her sister-in-law Marcie lead very different lives, but blood is thicker than water; they are close, they share things.

Husband troubles.

Marcie has everything she could possibly want, funded by Nathan’s high-powered city job. She pays for her privileged position in lonely days and nights, while her husband works away.

Caroline is struggling with two jobs and out-of-work Pete, who brings in no money at all. He is never home either. He spends his evenings in bars and clubs and the occasional ditch.

But everything in the Duke family is set to change. And for the better. Pete declares he has given up drinking for good and is getting a job. Nathan announces his intention to work less, spend more time with Marcie.

A birthday dinner should be the perfect occasion to bring the four together. But when is a party not a party? When someone ends up dead.

An early review for the book

Unsworth’s first novel – The Palaver Tree – will always be my favorite, because I too lived in Africa.

Her novel – Dirty Work – is another must read. The deceptively simple story of two couples morphs into a mystery with a number of surprising twists that kept me turning the pages. On the surface it would seem that Nathan, with all his money, his beautiful wife and stunning home, has the upper hand. Below the surface, however, things are churning – nasty things, that lead Nathan, his brother and his sister-in-law into a web they never could have imagined.

Well written with strong characterizations, great descriptions, and lots of action, Dirty Work is a story not to be missed if you like mysteries and even if you don’t.

The next author with news is Vashti Quiroz-Vega with a recent review for The Fall of Lilith: Fantasy Angels Series

About The Fall of Lilith:

So says Lilith, the most exquisite of the angels. The two most important pledges an angel makes to God are those of obedience and celibacy, and dire consequences await any who break their oaths.

At first, the angels are happy in their celestial home, learning and exploring together. As they grow older, though, Lilith begins to question these pledges, which now seem arbitrary and stifling. Her challenge of the status quo leads to disagreement, jealousy, and strife among her peers. As the arguing and acrimony grow, lines are drawn and sides are chosen. Is war inevitable?

Filled with robust characters, incredible landscapes, and exciting action, The Fall of Lilith is an epic tale of seduction, betrayal, and revenge.

Free Will involves asking difficult questions and making hard choices, choices that require strength and sacrifice. These decisions can tear apart friendships and cause rifts between allies.

They can even threaten the foundations of Heaven.

One of the recent reviews

Lilith  on October 3, 2017

Where do I begin? I have never before read a book this epic and amazing. The genre isn’t my normal genre but I have come to appreciate other genres as my reading and writing career goes forth.

This book starts with heaven and there are three levels of heaven. God has given the angels free will and He loves all His angels. As the angels grow older, like teenagers, some find they want to have free will on their level of heaven. The angels lived in a paradise called Floraison filled with lush meadows, gardens, waterfalls, and the like. They have no need for food. Lilith decides that she wants more; she wants free will in all ways possible. She becomes evil – quite wicked and very manipulative. She uses that to her advantage and she knows just how to get other angels to rebel.

God decides to show his angels a new creation and from that He makes the galaxy and eventually Earth. During Creation the angels watch as He makes the oceans, water creatures, trees, grass, animals, and flying creatures. He creates a beautiful Garden of Eden filled with the most luscious flowers, trees, etc and then He makes Man. Man shall be the ruler of this domain and He makes this man a woman to be with him. Adam and Eve – they are naked and the most beautiful creatures the angels have ever seen. Lilith starts a revolt and they lose, and are banished from Heaven.

Smorgasbord Book Promotion – Air Your Reviews – Judith Barrow and Vashti Quiroz-Vega

The first author is Judith Barrow whose latest release A Hundred Tiny Threads has received another wonderful review.

About A Hundred Tiny Threads

It’s 1911 and Winifred Duffy is a determined young woman eager for new experiences, for a life beyond the grocer’s shop counter ruled over by her domineering mother.

The scars of Bill Howarth’s troubled childhood linger. The only light in his life comes from a chance encounter with Winifred, the girl he determines to make his wife.

Meeting her friend Honora’s silver-tongued brother turns Winifred’s heart upside down. But Honora and Conal disappear, after a suffrage rally turns into a riot, and abandoned Winifred has nowhere to turn but home.

The Great War intervenes, sending Bill abroad to be hardened in a furnace of carnage and loss. When he returns his dream is still of Winifred and the life they might have had… Back in Lancashire, worn down by work and the barbed comments of narrow-minded townsfolk, Winifred faces difficult choices in love and life.

The most recent review for the book

A Hundred Tiny Threads’ by Judith Barrow – the prequel to the Howarth Family Series is the backstory of two characters in Barrow’s acclaimed historical WW2 series and explains or illuminates at least, where they come from as people. Starting in 1911 over the years we uncover the threads that bind Winifred and Bill together. If you, like myself, missed the characters of Barrow’s series, here is a welcome encore.

There is no doubt that Judith Barrow is one gifted writer. The book is well-written, full of great characters and instilled with an impeccably authentic feel of the times.

The story begins with Winifred and her struggles with her mother, who is as oppressing for her daughter as are the politics of the time. It is the era of the Suffragette movement and Winifred’s Irish friend Honora drags Winifred into the movement and introduces her to her handsome brother.

It is also the story of Bill, injured in 1911 in the mines and abandoned by his sort of family. He’s in love with Winifred throughout.

A lot happnes, so even if you have read the other books in the series, there are enough surprises and twists for you to take delight from. Besides the parts on the Suffragettes and their clashes with the police, the novel also includes war segments and sections about the conflict between Blacks and Tans in Ireland. Details on war fare, mining, women’s rights and irish politics make this a rich and rewarding read.

Great characters, engaging subplots and a love for details are among the many strength of this author. Barrow is a master at bringing the times to colorfoul and breath-taking life. This is moving, gripping and heart-wrenchingly good.

The next book to be receiving great reviews is The Fall of Lilith: Fantasy Angels Series by Vashti Quiroz-Vega

I don’t even know where to begin. This book was so amazing. It took the story of the fallen angels to a whole new level. Initially, I had hoped it was a story of Lilith, the first wife of Adam from Hebrew lore, but I was pleasantly surprised by the story I received.

The book is long, it is actually two books in one. The first is the story of the angels in Heaven. The reader is given a glimpse into the adolescence of God’s holy beings. You watch as Lilith learns of her ability to manipulate her siblings. She takes this gift and begins her desire to be as God. She convinces several of her weaker siblings to join her cause which leads to the battle for Heaven.

Book two takes you on the fallen angels’ journey across the new world God created, Earth. Here you experience the joys and pains as the angels discover their new gifts and realize they are free from the laws that bound them in Heaven.

Vashti is an incredible author with an amazing imagination. She created characters that you can’t help but fall in love with, and in some cases absolutely hate. She used the fallen angels to explain several mythological creatures and I found that to be ingenious.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy.

An early review for the book by Kirkus Reviews

The Fall of Lilith is a compelling narrative that provides background on several well-known, supernatural figures. Though obviously religious in nature, Quiroz-Vega’s book strays far from traditional biblical text. Sea monsters, mermaids, and vampires share the stage with angels and demons. And illicit (and explicit) affairs, violent battles, and graphic injuries abound. Quiroz-Vega’s prose is incredibly descriptive.

A well-written, descriptive, and dark creation story.”

One of the reviews for The Basement on Goodreads

Jan 21, 2015 Jennifer rated it really liked it 4 Stars

A story that talks about and emphasizes the emotive subject of bullying. There are some fun aspects too, it shows bullying can come in all walks of life. I have not quite finished it yet but the writer Vashti Quiroz-Vega is very promising, I look forward to reading more of her work.

Well I finished the book quite a while ago now and read it in 2 weeks, very easy to follow and you will find yourself routing for the main Character Robbie throughout his strife’s and troubles. Robbie is a great character and is much stronger than he thinks, it also shows what you can achieve if you put your mind to it. Something happens right at the end of the book, you will not see it coming. A must read indeed!

About Vashti Quiroz-Vega

Hello! My name is Vashti Quiroz-Vega. I’m a writer of Suspense, Thriller, Fantasy and Horror. I also enjoy mixing in some Humor and Romance into my stories.

From the time I was a young kid, writing has been my passion. I’ve always been a writer I just didn’t know it until much later. For me, it is easier to express my thoughts on paper than with the spoken word. I enjoy making people feel an array of emotions with my writing. I like my audience to laugh one moment, cry the next and clench their jaws after that.

My love of animals and nature are often incorporated in my stories. You’ll read intriguing things about various animals, nature and natural disasters commingled in my character driven novels.

I love to read almost as much as I love to write. Some of my favorite authors are Stephen King, M. Night Shyamalan, Michael Crichton, Anne Rice, J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling and Dan Brown.
