The first review today is for the Halloween poetry collection by Annette Rochelle Aben – Son of Booku: More Halloween Haiku

About the collection

The stage is set and the actors are fully rehearsed and prepared to have the night of their lives. Of course, it IS only ONE NIGHT but that night is Halloween. Come, and eavesdrop on the cast of fright night in the bright light of day as they speak in “haikulike verse”. While most subjects say cheese when facing a camera, these rascals say, BOO! BOOKU that is!

JanS 5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Halloween Accompaniment!  Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2021

I love that this little book of Haiku is based on this author’s family and love for all things Halloween! The photos are outstanding. The extent this family goes to with decorations is over the top! But add the brilliant Haiku with the photos and you have an excellent spooky book to share and celebrate at Halloween! I highly recommend this very quick read. It will get you in the trick-or-treating spirit immediately!

The next author today with a recent review is Pamela S. Wight for her latest release Flashes of Life: True Tales of the Extraordinary Ordinary

About the collection.

Wow! Life goes by in a flash.

Philosophers and mystics ponder the mystery of these flashes. Pamela Wight writes about life flashes in her short stories that include family and friends, love and life’s challenges. Wight’s “Flash Memoir” promotes the belief that we all share sparks of the extraordinary that occur in our everyday life. Each short story is true and brings a smile of recognition to her readers: that life transports and enthralls us in all its confusing, amusing, challenging, and astonishing ways. Each story is light-hearted and short – like a flash – but be prepared for a page-turner that keeps you in your seat, smiling.

Balroop Singh 5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! A Must Read!  Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2021

Flashes of Life by Pamela S. Wight brings to life those little moments of joy, which we often miss, those emotions that remain unexpressed, those relationships that we cherish and wish we could hold on to them as they slip out of our hands, however hard we may close our fists. Wight possesses the knack of converting an ordinary scenario into a humorous one, with her witty style of writing. I’ve never read a more marvelous account of the endeavor of a fourteen-year-old girl, to straighten her hair to look like ‘Jane Asher!’

I know Pamela writes with élan, as I follow her at her blog but this memoir, in the form of little stories and anecdotes from her life is amazing! She can look at the mirror and wonder, “where’s the cute twenty-year-old? Who the hell is this freaky lady?” I must have thought that a million times when I look at myself but only Pamela could express it so well to compress it into ‘Dancing Our Age.’ Her crisp style and ingenious choice of words adds a dash of delight that touches your heart immediately. Her stories flow like a gurgling stream, cascading at times and shimmering like the first rays of winter sun.

I thought ‘Straight Hair’ would be my favorite but then I read ‘How to Embarrass Your Kids’ (loaded with fun) and ‘A Renewal’ – dripping with subtle emotions and
‘Grilled Cheese,’ which is wonderfully narrative: “kitchen as tiny as an elf’s, and it has already taken me four minutes, thirty-eight seconds to find a knife to cut the cheese.” Wight is most creative but it hits the sky with ‘It’s All Golden!’ Just look at this: “my thirty year old son, once my hard child”, as hard as sleet on soft grass. I was the grass.” I loved ‘Nap Time,’ I laughed out loud while reading ‘Burnt Toast’ and would never forget her winter coat that she wore when it was 70 degrees outside! You have to read to find why!

I have no words to describe the superb beauty of ‘The Weight of the Soul’ and ‘Benji.’ Need I say this is a MUST READ book? I would like to give it double 5 stars and keep it at my bedside to read it again and again.

About the book

Life in the Colorado mountains isn’t easy for immigrants Anita and Ottavio Notaro, particularly when they’re isolated on a hillside and barely speak the language. Anita is carrying their first child, and Tav works many long, hard hours away from home. This isn’t the American dream they were promised; this is a brutal life on the frontier. Tav has been saving money to make their lives easier, and he stumbles on a windfall. The only problem is, he isn’t the only one who knows about it. Trouble befalls these two humble Italians, threatening their livelihoods—and their lives.

A strange posse made up of fellow countrymen ride to their rescue. But will they get there in time?

Having read and loved the Medici Protectorate Series, I was thrilled to see there was a short story prequel to it. Ottavio and a very pregnant Anita are trying to live the American Dream in the Colorado mountains. Ottavio puts in long hours with little to show for it. One day he comes home with an unexpected find right as Anita goes into labor. They hoped to use this to go back to Italy, but things quickly change. This is beautifully written, and I could feel the hardship they had endured, including down to the detail of their poor diet. What happens next is heartbreaking, but then comes relief to see a familiar group. This can be a standalone read, but I highly recommend the following books in the Medici Protectorate Series.

JanS 5.0 out of 5 stars A Gripping Short Story  Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2021

This short story sets the stage to begin the Medici Protectorate Series and after reading this introduction, I will be reading the rest of this series. The story gripped me from the first word on the first page to the last. A young Italian couple living on the frontier in the Colorado mountains is struggling to survive. Ottavio and Anita Notaro have one dream and that is to return to their beloved homeland. Anita is heavy with their first child. Ottavio works hard and when he finds a treasure that will pay for their trip back home, he is overjoyed. But he isn’t the only one who knows about the treasure. The tragedy that befalls Anita and Tav is heartbreaking. This story is written in rich narrative, heavily descriptive, and filled with emotion that drips off the pages. It includes folklore, history, and even a touch of mysticism. I am anxious to dive into book one of the Medici Protectorate Series to see what happens next!

The next author is Sian Turner with a recent review for her latest release – a short story collection A World of Impossibilities

About the collection

A collection of eight magical realism stories (about impossible events, but set against the backdrop of ordinary lives). Read about a wish-granting entity, an unexpected second chance, a ghostly encounter and more. Tear up the rules of known science and stretch your imagination with these variously chilling, humorous, sweet – and often thought-provoking – stories from Sian Turner, author of Splitting Infinities and Sweet Erin.

Contains the following stories (of varying length):

  • The Second Life of Grizelda the Cat – Grizelda, being a cat, should have nine lives, but two is quite enough.
  • I have a Reservation – A reservation in a restaurant with a most unusual atmosphere.
  • Gran’s Loft – Laying insulation in a loft should be child’s play, but not for Gregor.
  • Real Life Magic – A little girl with a special gift bites off more than she can chew.
  • Vota Torquent – a wish-granting entity helps a woman in need of a job.
  • That’s the Ticket – A string of numbers can be more trouble than they’re worth.
  • The Mirror – Susan makes a discovery in the loft of her new home, but her find has unexpected consequences.
  • Lacking Inspiration – Author Stella takes a walk in the park seeking inspiration, but gets way more than she bargained for.

Helen Warburton  5.0 out of 5 stars Imagine if…. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 May 2021

The author takes the reader into the realm of ‘What if…?’, leading us from our everyday life into a world that we sense may lie just beyond, and so exploring our understanding of normality and our sense of self.

What if we were someone else?, What if we were the ghost?

Each story is fun and thought -provoking in equal measure.

Western Romance meets a rift in time  Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2021

A hard-nosed lady shootist and Marine, a rift in time, and a love story straight out of the Wild West. As always, the authors prose is crisp and thrilling, the characters wonderfully crafted and developed, and a story that’ll keep you guessing till the very end. Seriously, the twists and turns at the very end are phenomenal. I was thoroughly entertained and delighted by this story. Great for fans of the western genre, but it’s so much more.
