Smorgasbord Cafe and Bookstore – New Release – #Suspense Sandra J. Jackson, Reviews – #Supernatural Jessica Bakkers, #WWII Marina Osipova,

Welcome to the Cafe and Bookstore update with new releases and reviews for authors on the shelves.

The first author today Sandra J. Jackson has a new release Dancing In The Wind: Journey To Freedom.

About the Book

April and her family have returned to the place where her nightmare began. It’s bad enough that she feels trapped by a building, a virus, and the upcoming winter, but the indistinguishable whispers in her head hold her captive as well.

For April, remembering is reliving the events in her life every day – good and bad. When she discovers that the voice in her head is Cecil’s, she turns to her parents for a solution. Somehow, he implanted secrets deep in her subconscious. April suspects they are clues to solving the virus he created.

But someone else knows about the secrets trapped in April’s head, and they have a plan of their own. Will April’s parents get to the information, or will someone from April’s past get there first? And can April learn to cope with these memories, or will they drive her crazy?

One of the recent reviews for Playing in the Rain

You awake in an unknown environment. You can’t remember who you are or where you’re from, but you know where you are now is not where you ought to be. You feel trapped, because you are. You feel alone, because ….because…You can’t remember why, but you know you weren’t alone before. Before waking up whereever you currently are.

Lead character, A2, is in a facility called C.E.C.I.L: the Contagion Eradication Center for Intelligent Life. There is a man named Jasper there, who provides and controls everything, including the drugs she is being pumped full of, because ….because….she doesn’t know why. Danger and mystery meld with confusion and hazy memories of a life she only barely recalls. A2 meets B2, and they discover they were sisters, before….before whatever happened that brought them here….whereever they are, though neither know why.

Jackson’s first book in the Escape Series, Playing in the Rain: When All That Matters is Freedom pulls you right into the story from page one, slowly yet inexorably, leaving you as dazed and confused as A2. Page after deliciously-mystifying page, you follow A2 and B2 as their situation goes from bad to worse, yet gets better and better. If you love immersing yourself into a story body and soul, where you can end up exhausted from the remarkable confusion the author maintains chapter after chapter, dragging you and her characters along an unforseen path to an undisclosed conclusion while spinning in a web of intrigue that will leave everyone ensnared and gasping for breath, then prepare yourself. This one will not disappoint you.

It will not give up its secrets quickly or easily, either. Settle in and prepare for the inescapably claustrophobic, diabolically mind-spinning ride of your life!

The first book today with a recent review is  Guns of Perdition – The Armageddon Showdown Book 1 by Jessica Bakkers. I reviewed the book and this fast paced supernatural thriller with all guns blazing would make a great gift.

About the book

IT TAKES GRACE TO HUNT WHEN IT’S DARKSOME

Jessie expects he’ll be forever cleaning up after the cowpokes of the Bad Hoss Saloon. That’s until the day a drifter strides through the doors, and blows away a blood-sucking demon, along with Jessie’s belief in an everyday world. Jessie is captivated by the enigmatic Grace, with her pearl-handled revolvers, and wolf companion. He throws in his normal life and follows her across the Wild West, as she hunts down and slays the evil creatures that roam the frontier.

Along the way, they seek the aid of a Native American warrior, cross paths with a Cajun Queen, and encounter a small-town tycoon with a deadly hunger for gold. Animosity and distrust plague Grace and Jessie, and their strange group of allies, but they must put their differences behind them if they’re to have any hope of finding and defeating the frontier’s true evil, the Darksome Gunman.

The Armageddon Showdown is a dark-fantasy, weird western series of epic proportions, focusing on the age-old battle between good and evil, though in the Wild West, it’s not always clear just who is good and who is evil.

Join Grace Dyer and her band of miscreants as they battle demons and demi-gods, in the frontier’s deadliest conflict…the Armageddon Showdown.

I’m not a Western fan at heart, but this went far beyond my expectations. Bring six main characters together, each different in everyway, each one haunted by painful memories, Each guitly of their own seven deadly sin, yet completely unaware. Each one of them justifying their actions for revenge, lust, greed, and love.

I’m familiar with Revelations in the Bible, and this take on that book enticed my curiousity. Though I’m aware that it’s work of fiction, I couldn’t help but ask, “What if?”

There were more than ‘two scoops of action’ in this book, so my adrenaline junkie was satiated. There were plenty of well orchestrated plot twists, too. Not a dull moment hiding behind any page.

I must add that I enjoyed Grace’s dialogue. Her idioms and slang flowed smoothly and I chuckled more than a few times. That’s no easy feat, without getting repetitive. Well done, Jessica!

If you’re into gunfights, thrilling scenes, ‘end-of-days’ cliff hangers, spiritual battles . . . this is your book! FIVE STARS from me!

A truly gripping historical fiction which takes place in Stalinist Russia during World War II . Danger is lurking everywhere. People are disappearing without a trace. Trust doesn’t exist during this time period . What I found to be quite disturbing is the journey of two women living in two different cities and the choices and decisions they are faced with. In time their paths will cross, not in a good way but in an unnerving way. The author did an amazing job painting a picture of what it was like to live in these horrifying times. A must read!!!

Smorgasbord Cafe and Bookstore – Christmas Book Fair – #Romance Olga Nunez Miret, #WWII Marina Osipova, #Psychologicalthriller Toni Pike

Welcome to the Christmas Book Fair where I will be featuring all the authors on the shelves of the Cafe and Bookstore that would make great gifts for family and friends.

The first book today is by multi-genre author Olga Nunez Miret and is a light-hearted look at reality baking show and the behind the scenes drama. I Love Your Cupcakes.

About the book

Dulce, Adelfa and Storm, the protagonists of I Love Your Cupcakes are business partners, friends and share some “interesting” family connections. All the men Dulce meets only want to talk about her cakes and she’s tired of it. Her friend Adelfa, although she’s a Chemistry Professor, can’t manage to find the recipe for the perfect relationship. And Storm, the third of the partners of their bakery/coffee shop/bookshop/art gallery and ex-fire station, is an artist who is not a master in the art of love. How could they imagine that at the studio of the contest “Do You Have What it Takes to Be the Next Baking Star?” they’d find sexual harassment, cheats, fights and also love? Recipes included (only for cakes, not love!)

A recent review for the book by Rosie Amber Review Team member Tovia Inokoba 18th November 2020

Where there are cakes, there’s sure to be romance. I love your cupcakes is a work of fiction that envelops you in the sugary webs of both sensational romance and astounding baking.

It’s a book centered on three like-minded creatives; Dulcina or Dulce who is every bit as sweet as her name implies is a lover of books and the goddess of flavors, Adelfa whose chemistry skills have not only brought her fame amongst intellectuals but has also made her a mastermind at calculating measurements and what not in the kitchen and last but not the least; Storm whose creativity and computer genius always has everyone in awe and his looks goes without saying as I would have swooned myself if he didn’t play for the other team. These three creatives teamed up to create what they would later come to know as Literally Literary Cupcakes and Cakes shop. Not only was Storm a creative genius and a computer wizard, he was also a spontaneous force to be reckoned with as it was him who got them into the ‘’Do you have what it takes to be the next baking star?’’ contest where they may or may not have found love.

This author uses flashbacks which such ease and synergy that it’s commendable. She’s able to tell the story with a seamless description and a diction that makes it easy to comprehend. If you’re a fan of romance as well as sugary treats then this sweet romance is definitely for you.

Will Dulce, Adelfa and Storm rise up to the task and prove that they have what it takes to be the next baking star or will dirty Harry be the end of them?

If you are nuts about TV cookery programs and think chocolate is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, keep reading…

I Love Your Cupcakes is a “sweet” romance, a virtual fantasy high in calories and a fun adventure. Dare to give it a bite!

A page turner from the very beginning. The author’s research and knowledge of the region is evident from the beginning. Soviet partisans are forced to play a double game in order to find out who of their own are collaborating with the Germans. While this is a common thread in all areas of Nazi-occupied countries, it was something new for me to read about what took place in Byelorussia. It is a page turner as danger lurks every minute of the day – from both the Germans and the Soviets. I loved the twists and turns this story took and the way the author portrayed the human side of both sides. The characters were well-drawn and no-one could be sure if the person they knew was playing a double game or not. Some made it, some didn’t. Highly recommended.

Now something for fans of psychological thrillers from Toni PikeDesolation Bluff.. Toni also has a book in the Children’s Cafe.

About the book

Blind romance author Oliver Cameron uses the pen name of Fidel Amore and thinks he has the perfect life at his country estate near Desolation Bluff. After a honeymoon in Paris, his wife Vanessa continues her work as his assistant. His friend Ray is the business manager who lives in the gatehouse and also acts as the public face of Fidel Amore, doing all those book-signing trips that Oliver never wanted to attend. Helen Dunkley is the housekeeper devoted to him since childhood – but she detests the two newcomers.

Complications set in when Ray, working on his old car, accidentally backs into Oliver. His injuries appear minor but the next day he suddenly regains his sight. Oliver wants Ray and Rachel to be the first to hear his good news, but when he finds them he uncovers a shocking betrayal.

A game of cat and mouse begins – and with the arrival of a mysterious stranger, it turns deadly.

A short suspense novel that will keep you guessing right to the very end.

A recent review for the book

Pete Springer 4.0 out of 5 stars Fast moving and suspenseful from start to finish  Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2020

Oliver Cameron writes popular romance novels under the pen name of Fidel Amore. What makes Oliver’s success as an author more impressive is how it happens. After falling from a tree as a young boy, Oliver loses his vision. He amazingly overcomes his disability and becomes a prolific writer.

Since Oliver prefers to live in seclusion and concentrate on writing, the people around him develop a plan to further his financial success. Elizabeth Townsend, the senior editor at a publishing company, introduces Oliver to Vanessa and her friend, Ray. They develop a scheme where the handsome playboy, Ray, poses as Fidel to attract more female followers. Oliver can concentrate on writing while the others can focus on marketing Fidel. The formula works well as Oliver churns out four books per year that achieve excellent sales

Oliver and Vanessa mary, but Ray and Vanessa are having a steamy affair behind the scenes. When Oliver finds out, Toni Pike’s well-crafted story becomes even more intriguing and fast-paced. The writing is excellent, and this book is a page-turner from cover to cover. The ending is quite satisfying, as well. About my only issue with this excellent book were a couple of moments of implausibility. This was the first book I’ve read by Pike, but it won’t be the last
