Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New on the Shelves – Author C.S. Boyack

Welcome to another new author on the shelves of the bookstore. C.S. Boyack is a prolific author and popular blogger who supports Indie authors in a number of ways, including with his entertaining and effective Lisa Burton Interviews.

Last time Craig was here in 2015 he was promoting his short story collection which was followed up in September 2016 with the second volume of The Experimental Notebook of C.S. Boyack. Every story can be read in a single session. This time there are a few tributes to the pulp era. Stories include science fiction, paranormal, and horror.

Here is a recent review for Volume II

This anthology comprises fifteen different stories, taking you on fifteen very different trips; some will make you happy, some will make you sad, others will make you wonder. There is one thing that they all have in common: They are unforgettable. I cannot tell you more about this anthology as it would spoil the fun of reading it yourself.

With The Experimental Notebook of C. S. Boyack II, C. S. Boyack presents us with fifteen little gifts. Each story is skilfully elaborated, has its own great flow. Ernest Hemingway once stated “When writing a novel a writer should create living people; people not characters. A character is a caricature.” C. S. Boyack shows this masterly with every story – he created living people instead of mere characters. I was drawn into the stories right away, close to the protagonists – sometimes too close for comfort. I could easily envision the characters and locations. I had a great time reading The Experimental Notebook of C. S. Boyack II. It is a very enjoyable read.

This is for you if you like short stories, adventures with a humorous streak, paranormal events, horror stories, a remarkable science fiction story, very likeable characters to cheer on, surprises and food for thought – all packed in micro-fiction and short stories.

This is a book to read again. Highly recommended!

As well as short stories C.S. Boyack also has several novels and here is a YA fantasy Will O’ Wisp.

About the book

There is something evil up Bergamot Holler, and it’s been targeting the Hall family for generations.

Patty Hall is fifteen years old. She loves stargazing, science fiction, and all things related to space exploration. This leaves her perfectly prepared for the wrong problem.

Patty is afraid her mother will send her to a care facility if she tells her what she’s seen. If she doesn’t figure things out soon, she’s going to join her father in the Hall family cemetery plot.

Patty has to come to grips with her own physical handicap, face the wilderness, and an ancient evil all alone if she’s going to survive.

One of the excellent reviews for the book.

Patty is a fifteen year old girl in 1975. Her mother forces her to wear leg braces which makes Patty a target for bullying. Because of this, Patty has learned to trust few and block everything else out. One night while stargazing with some friends, she sees a strange light that almost kills a man. Patty decides to investigate but doesn’t really get too far. Then when her mother and she inherit her uncle’s estate she finds his journal and learns of the curse on the Hall family from a witch during the Revolutionary War. Patty is going to break this curse before it takes both her and her brother’s lives.

I love how easy it is to fall into this story. Patty is a regular teenager during 1975 and does the same thing all teens do. But she finds herself the outsider so she has filled her time with science, science fiction and anything relating to outer space. But when she sees a man almost die from this strange blue light, Patty thinks it can only be aliens. But when she finds her uncles journal she learns the truth.

This is my first book from C.S. Boyack but it will not be my last. This is a great story that anyone of any age will enjoy.

I received Will O’ the Wisp from Reading Addiction Virtual Book Tours for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

About C.S. Boyack.

I was born in a town called Elko, Nevada. I like to tell everyone I was born in a small town in the 1940s. I’m not quite that old, but Elko has always been a little behind the times. This gives me a unique perspective of earlier times, and other ways of getting by. Some of this bleeds through into my fiction.

I moved to Idaho right after the turn of the century, and never looked back. My writing career was born here, with access to other writers and critique groups I jumped in with both feet.

I like to write about things that have something unusual. My works are in the realm of science fiction, paranormal, and fantasy. The goal is to entertain you for a few hours. I hope you enjoy the ride.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New on the Shelves – Denny Ryder Paranormal Crime Series by Deborah A. Bowman

new-on-the-shelves-update

Today the featured author is Deborah A. Bowman and a look at the Denny Ryder Paranormal Crime Series beginning with Stroke of Fear. This book is age appropriate for teens, young adults and adults interested in the paramormal.

51dzsqrppnl-_uy250_About the book

Stroke of Fear starts off with a bang! Denise Ryder is in the midst of a gruesome car accident. She’s thrown against the door, pitched to the floor, twisted upside-down, falling, as she claws her way out of a shattered window. She hears loud crashes, hysterical screams, screeching metal, and the voices of two dear friends. Her stomach heaves, and she’s choking, gagging, can’t breathe! Blood is everywhere.

10 YEARS LATER: Pleasant memories of her childhood. She grins at the antics of the two sisters, different as night and day. Denny is just waking up from a soothing, happy dream. She’s had “dreams come true” since she was a child. Sounds like a fairy tale, right? Wrong! It’s her nightmares from that come to life! Yet, she does everything in her power to deny the images.

Denny becomes embroiled in a missing child investigation. When a dream shows her where the boy is, she won’t let herself believe it. A twist of fate reveals that the dream “could” be true. She’s scared, but relieved that she can take action based on fact. She meets Detective Ted Collins, an investigator who doesn’t scoff at the paranormal. The two of them use facts, clues, and intuitive visions to piece the case together. Will they be able to save Jeremy?

A new piece of evidence pulls Denny into another horrific dream. She fears she’s had an out-of-body experience where she meets the psychopathic serial killer who feeds on the blood of innocent children. Denny isn’t even sure whether she believes in astral projection or not, but somehow she becomes caught between the dreamscape and reality. She knows she can’t be both places at the same time. Where does she go from here, and what about Jeremy?

Here is a review for the series as well as for Stroke of Fear.

The “STROKE OF” novella series is unlike anything else I’ve ever read. I don’t read a ton of Paranormal literature, but I’ve read enough to have covered most of the major tropes in the sub-genre. STROKE OF FEAR employs several common tropes to great effect, including a physically disabled psychic, lucid dreams, second sight, and dreams a harbingers of future (or current) events. What makes STROKE OF FEAR unique isn’t the setup or the characters, but rather the style of the writing and the way the story is told.

BOWMAN has found a way to marry some pretty dark thematic material to a lighthearted writing style. Somehow it works. I didn’t know what to think of it at first, but BOWMAN won me over, and by the time I finished this relatively short novella, I was ready to read the next two.

Though the author indicates that each of “STROKE OF” novellas is a standalone book, I found that they’re more a serialization of a longer plot arc that deals with a missing boy. Yes, each novella has a self-contained plot arc as well, but the three novellas are all required to finish the longer, most compelling plot line. Go into this first book knowing that you’ll need to buy the next two to have your curiosity satisfied fully.

These are interesting, unique novellas and worth the read if you enjoy paranormal. Even more so if you eschew gore; while the novellas don’t shy away from the darker aspects of the story, BOWMAN steers clear of anything too graphic, which I for one appreciated.
