One of the recent reviews for A Girl Named Truth.

I find that often very interesting people (actors, comedians, artists, etc.) have had unorthodox childhoods, and creativity flows because of it. Alethea is no exception. The life that was imposed upon her as a child made her uniquely able to write in the way she does. This book was hard to put down, and I found so many parallels in her childhood story and mine, especially in the little nuances of uncertainty and yearning for friendship, love, and acceptance. This is an excellent book and a story that leaves you thinking long after you’ve read it.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New Book on the Shelves – The Gemini Connection by Teri Polen #YA #Sc-fi

A red letter day for Teri Polen with the release of her latest book The Gemini Connection. Teri is having a book launch party today on Facebook and details at the end of the post.

About The Gemini Connection.

Teen twin brothers Evan and Simon Resnik are fiercely loyal to each other and share an unusual bond—they experience each other’s emotions as their own and can sense where the other is. On their dying planet of Tage, scientists work tirelessly on its survival. Like the twins’ parents, Simon is a science prodigy, recruited at a young age to work with the brilliant creator of Scientific Innovations. To the bitter disappointment of their parents, Evan shows no aptitude or interest in science. As a Mindbender, he travels into the minds of scientists to locate buried memories, connect ideas and concepts, and battle recurring nightmares. When Simon mysteriously disappears, Evan is plunged into a world of loss and unbearable guilt. For the first time, he can’t ‘feel’ Simon—it’s like he no longer exists. Evan blames himself. No one knows that he ignored his brother’s pleas for help on the night he went missing. A year later, Simon is still gone. Evan lost his twin, but Tage might have lost its last hope of survival when it’s discovered that Simon’s unfinished project could be its salvation. Evan is determined to find him—somewhere—and bring Simon home. Their unusual connection might be more extraordinary than they know, and the key to locating Simon.

Darque Dreamer 5.0 out of 5 stars Exhilarating! June 1, 2018

The Gemini Connection is exhilarating! It’s an edge of your seat sci-fi with a mystery! You are gong to love the emotion and uniqueness this one has to offer!

Oh, the feels! On the surface, this began as a fast paced sci-fi story. Having dug deeper, it offered emotional connections, thrills, and a bit of the paranormal!

This was my first book read by Teri Polen, and it certainly won’t be my last. I loved her writing style. It flowed seamlessly. It sparked vivid images in my mind, and strong feelings in my heart. I loved how she took a typical YA sci-fi setting and gave it life. I loved the fact that her main character was a teenage male instead of a female. And, I loved how she took a little predictability and twisted it with some shocking moments to create an incredibly exciting story!

I read the whole thing in one sitting! It was such a compulsive read!! I loved the world, the science aspects, the emotions, and the characters! I loved our main characters, Evan and Simon. They had a strong, brotherly connection that spoke volumes in a genre that normally highlights female characters. I enjoyed their strengths, their weaknesses, their differences, and their personalities!

Evan was hard working and intense, but also extremely vulnerable deep down. Simon was intelligent and level headed. Together, the pair symbolized true friendship. I also really loved our supporting characters. Max really stood out to me. He represented anger and struggle, but also hope and love. And, Syd represented patience, beauty, and loyalty.

Teri created intensely beautiful relationships and friendships (and even included an awesome LGBT relationship) in the story. She created a story that flowed with emotion and heart pounding thrills. I couldn’t put this one down! I loved the paranormal aspects of the story involving Simon and Evan being able to feel each other’s emotions, and found the creation of the mind benders to be really intriguing! I’d recommend this one to all YA sci-fi readers, hands down!

I grew up in a mountainous court in the Peak District in Hong Kong with my elder brother Donald. My parents dragged me away from my exotic childhood and my much loved dog Topsy to the frozen wastelands of Scotland. Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New on the Shelves – Heritage of Deceit – Short Story – Graham Downs

Today the featured author is Graham Downs who has written several children and YA books short stories and flash fiction collections. Today I am showcasing his published short story Heritage of Deceit and I hope you will give him a warm welcome to the bookstore.

About Heritage of Deceit – Short Story

While surfing the Internet at work, Lloyd believes he’s found a relic from an old genocide. If he’s right, the artefact would be worth a ton of money, and it will give lots of people closure when they find out what really happened to their families.

But there’s one problem. The artefact–if it really exists–is in the possession of Carla, a shy woman in the company’s Accounts Department, and she never lets it out of her sight.
Lloyd seeks the help of his friend and fellow employee, Robert, whom Carla is desperately in love with. Will Robert agree to use Carla’s feelings for him to get information about the mysterious object?

Excellent Short Story on December 15, 2013

Interesting premise for a short story. Contained properly in a short time, entertaining and a believable setting. I can picture this story happening in real life. Pacing is quick, no fluff conversations, swiftly moving you through the story until you are finished.

Characters are developed well in a short time. The main characters are able to be understood, their motives, even their naivety. Can you see the ending coming? Maybe you can, I did not, I was pleasantly surprised by the ending. After all of the books I have read of late, I have become fairly jaded to endings. This one got me a bit. I highly recommend this one.

A great short story. on November 11, 2015

Co-workers Lloyd and Robert think that Carla’s ring is a link to a genocide. They plan a robbery to get hold of it that goes horribly wrong, and even the robbers don’t get what they bargained for.

This is a well written short story The dialogue between Lloyd and Robert is realistic and their plans develop quickly and move the story along nicely.

I don’t think that you have to like all the characters in a book to enjoy their story. I found myself really disliking both Lloyd and Robert. They were deceitful and underhand in both and action which made me keep reading to find out what would happen to them.

This book is titled Heritage of Deceit. Lloyd and Robert both seemed to have inherited some deceit from their heritage – and it didn’t do them any good!

A great short story.

Sally’s Cafe and Bookstore – New on the Shelves – Seeking Control of The Myths That Never Should Have Been (Guiding Council Book 2) by Mike Wolff

New on the shelves

Today’s featured author is Mike Wolff with his latest release in the science fiction/fantasy series The Guiding Council of Myths and Urban Legends. We have all heard the mysterious stories of mythical beings from the past and also some who are allegedly glimpsed from time to time in the present, such as Bigfoot.. What would you say if I told you they were real!   Here is the latest in the series Seeking Control of the Myths That Never Should Have Been.

About the book

While the Mythical Nation tries to recover from the civil war that killed thousands, strange happenings are occurring. Mythical creatures are being attacked seemingly at random, forcing the Guiding Council of Myths and Urban Legends to join together once again. The Guardin’ Gnomes, a highly trained, elite military group, seek out the source of these disturbances. It’s a race against time, as the leaders of the Mythical Nation try to locate the newest threat to their way of life before it’s too late.

Filled with more Myths and Urban Legends than you can shake a stick at, Seeking Control of the Myths That Never Should Have Been is the highly anticipated sequel to the fast-paced YA Fantasy novel Guiding Council of the Myths and Urban Legends.

Enjoyable, fun, and ‘Super- Awesome’ (according to the 11 year old) By Skunkmelon on October 26, 2015

This book was a fun read, highly entertaining, and cool. My eleven-year-old and I loved it. He thought the story with its Redcaps and Elves and Trolls was a blast and I really liked the story line that kept me engaged and interested. We read out loud before bedtime and there are some books that read better than others and this one was a treat. This book starts after the first: Guiding Council of Myths and Urban Legends and while you don’t have to read the first to understand and enjoy the second, you should.

There is violence in this, but PG-13 violence, nothing that made me hesitate to read it to my son.I highly recommend it as a great, rip-roaring read.

Settle down for a rip-roaring read!  By J Turner on 5 April 2016

Okay, an admission: I bought this book by mistake! I intended to buy the first in the series, but had a blonde moment and got the wrong one – but guess what? It didn’t matter! It’s a fab read on a standalone basis and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Mike Wolff is skilled at his craft and the story lines weave together seamlessly leading us to a conclusion that makes you smile. (Obviously, I’m not going to tell you the ending – you need to buy it and read it and discover it yourself!)

Even though I was not familiar with the characters, I caught on immediately, so if you’re like me, and buy it in the wrong order, it won’t spoil the read. The different myths and legends are crafted in a manner that is both familiar (ie what you’d have in your own head when you think of them), yet brings the author’s own imagination forwards and he is clever enough to implant his ideas over your own and make you smile as he does so.

Children will love it – there’s enough silliness to engage both them and the adults reading it with them. A cracking good read – I’ll be buying more of Mike’s work!

A review for Book One in the series – Guiding Council of Myths and Urban Legends

Remember the story of the hunters who shot Bigfoot and brought his body back with them? It wasn’t a hoax. It was covered up by the GCMUL–the Guiding Council of Myths and Urban Legends.

You see, all the mythical creatures the human race used to believe in–they’re all real. Elves, gnomes, trolls, vampires, werewolves. They live along side humanity, hiding just out of sight, under the protection and control of the GCMUL and the Chairman. But don’t think that just because they look like things out of a fairy tale that everything in peace and harmony in the magical world. The elves don’t get along with the gnomes. The dwarves would rather not associate with sprites. Nobody likes the trolls, and the trolls like it that way. The Loch Ness monster (whose name isn’t ‘Nessie’, by the way) is a troublemaker and unicorns–let’s not talk about unicorns.

This is the world of Guiding Council of Myths and Urban Legends. An unsteady alliance of mythical creatures who cooperate only far enough to keep the human world from learning of their existence. As bad as things are, though, they are about to get a lot worse. There’s murder, and treachery, and secret plots by who knows who, to do who knows what. Unthinkable as it seems, someone–or some thing–may be trying to take over the Council, or even worse, to destroy it.

This is a fast paced and exciting book that I would recommend to any fan of light fantasy. I was reminded of both Terry Pratchet and Neil Gaimen. I would not hesitate to recommend it to teens or even younger–there is some violence, but it is not described graphically.

About Mike Wolff

Formerly known as metallicwolff on the internet, I no longer play that part. When a terrible virus hit my computer and pretty much wiped out everything associated with that moniker, it changed me. I read mainly Indie Authors and I provide honest reviews. I would hope, should anyone feel inclined to read what I have written in the past, they would do the same for me.Watch over your shoulders.
