In April of this year I was delighted to read and review the children’s book by Miriam Hurdle – Tina Lost in a Crowd.
About the book
Tina invited her friend Erica to attend a popular Tchaikovsky’s Spectacular concert on a summer evening with her parents. During the intermission, her dad left the seat to buy some snacks. Tina and Erica followed him wanting to use the restroom. The shoving crowd pushed them away, and they lost sight of him. It would be impossible to fight through the 18,000 people to find him or go back to Tina’s mom. What would the girls do?
This story tells about what happened to Tina and Erica after they got lost. Children can adapt to the learning from different situations they may observe or encounter. Adults could have discussions with the children about the situations to help them develop problem-solving skills.
My review for the book 28th April 2021
This is a beautiful picture book that carries an important message even very young children will benefit from.
School holidays are to be enjoyed, with a mix of fun and learning experiences that broaden a child’s knowledge about their environment and surroundings, but some do come with risks that even with the best will in the world, can ruin a special outing.
The setting is spectacular at a classical music concert in the Hollywood Bowl. This of course comes with an audience of thousands of people, and it is easy for a small child to slip from a parent’s hand or wander off in a brief moment when a back is turned. Every parent’s nightmare.
Thankfully in the story, Tina and Erica benefit from a mother’s wise words to her child to keep them safe, and what might have been a distressing situation ends well.
I applaud the author for the flow of the story which is easy to follow and carries nuggets of wisdom for both parents and children. The illustrations are beautifully drawn and brightly coloured to catch the eye of a child and enhance the story as it unfolds. Highly recommended.

Agreed, with everything. As I read it, I was happy the lesson was stressful but the words not so much it will irretrievably frighten the children listening. A beautiful balance.

It’s not an easy topic to talk about, just like any other stressful topics Jacqui. I was relieved and thankful for how my eight-year-old daughter handled it. It inspired me to share her experience. Thank you for stopping by and comment.

I remember having Hans Christian Anderson fairy tales read to me as a child and to be honest most of them were terrifying xxx

A wonderful review, for a very useful book. Children love to make own experiences. Its sometimes good giving them the possibilities to get them by reading, not in the reality. xx Michael

You’re right, Michael. This is not the experience we wish the children to have. By reading about that may get them to think of the possible solutions. Thank you for your comment.

Thats true, Miriam! They need not to have it in real, but confronted with the story itself can help to be prepared. xx Michael

You’re right, Michael. The book is based on my daughter’s story with us, but she learned what to do from Girl Scout about what to do if she gets lost, and that saved a bigger scary situation.

Quite Michael and hopefully if they do unfortunately experience getting lost they will be prepared…hugsx

Well, today the children are a little less anxious than they were then. But time has also become more dangerous. Let’s hope the best! In any case, the book is a good opportunity to address the topic once. Thanks! hugsx

There are dangers to children and always have been, but at least if they know about them it makes them more aware…hugsx
