Smorgasbord Book Reviews – #Fantasy – The Necromancer’s Daughter by D.Wallace Peach

Delighted to share my review for the latest release by D.Wallace Peach the much anticipated The Necromancer’s Daughter.

About the book

A healer with the talent to unravel death. A stillborn child brought to life. A father lusting for vengeance. And a son torn between justice, faith, and love. Caught in a chase spanning kingdoms, each must decide the nature of good and evil, the lengths they will go to survive, and what they are willing to lose.

A healer and dabbler in the dark arts of life and death, Barus is as gnarled as an ancient tree. Forgotten in the chaos of the dying queen’s chamber, he spirits away her stillborn infant and in a hovel at the meadow’s edge, breathes life into the wisp of a child. He names her Aster for the lea’s white flowers. Raised as his daughter, she, too, learns to heal death.

Denied a living heir, the widowed king spies from a distance. But he heeds the claims of the fiery Vicar of the Red Order—in the eyes of the Blessed One, Aster is an abomination, and to embrace the evil of resurrection will doom his rule.

As the king’s life nears its end, he defies the vicar’s warning and summons the necromancer’s daughter. For his boldness, he falls to an assassin’s blade. Armed with righteousness and iron-clad conviction, the Order’s brothers ride into the leas to cleanse the land of evil.

To save her father’s life, Aster leads them beyond Verdane’s wall into the Forest of Silvern Cats, a wilderness of dragons and barbarian tribes. Unprepared for a world rife with danger and unchecked power, a world divided by those who practice magic and those who hunt them, she must choose whether to trust the one man offering her aid, the one man most likely to betray her—her enemy’s son.

From best-selling fantasy author D. Wallace Peach comes a retelling of the legend of Kwan-yin, the Chinese Goddess of Mercy. Set in a winter world of dragons, intrigue, and magic, The Necromancer’s Daughter is a story about duty, defiance, cruelty, and sacrifice— an epic tale of compassion and deep abiding love where good and evil aren’t what they seem.

My review for the book September 17th 2022

It will come as no surprise to fans of the books by D.Wallace Peach that this new book is hard to put down once you begin turning the pages.

As expected incredible world building and characters that leap out of the page fully formed in just a couple of chapters. Each compelling and infused with varying degrees of human strengths and frailties from compassion to downright evil.

We travel the road of life with Aster as she encounters obstacles in her quest and many dangers along the way. She does however manage to enchant most of those she meets with her innocence and conviction. This includes dragons who are not immune to her gentle persuasion.

We are witness to the persecution and violence resulting from being outside of the mandated belief system, but also the kindness of strangers often with those with little comfort of their own.

The action is fast paced and dramatic and there is not much time to take a breath between the conflict between good and evil… However, this is infused with romance and growing respect that comes with understanding and acceptance.

I loved the book, can definitely see it as a fantasy film or television series and was sorry to see it finish. As with all the books I have read by this author, that ending comes with a sigh of satisfaction. If you have not read fantasy before then this book is a very good place to start… and I highly recommend this exciting adventure.

About Diana Wallace Peach

A long-time reader, best-selling author D. Wallace Peach started writing later in life after the kids were grown and a move left her with hours to fill. Years of working in business surrendered to a full-time indulgence in the imaginative world of books, and when she started writing, she was instantly hooked.

In addition to fantasy books, Peach’s publishing career includes participation in various anthologies featuring short stories, flash fiction, and poetry. She’s an avid supporter of the arts in her local community, organizing and publishing annual anthologies of Oregon prose, poetry, and photography.

Peach lives in a log cabin amongst the tall evergreens and emerald moss of Oregon’s rainforest with her husband, two owls, a horde of bats, and the occasional family of coyotes.

Thanks for dropping in today and I hope you will be leaving with some books… Sally.

  2. Excellent review and wonderful observation, Sally! I agree with some comments that Diana’s book will attract filmmakers. Wishing for a fun time with Diana at her niece’s wedding. We enjoy time with the grandkids and going to open houses. It’s nice to take a break from packing the house.

  3. I have the book in my TBR stack and I’m looking forward to reading it. Diana is an extraordinary writer, and the fantasy genre is my new read. It seems my author friends all write Sci-fi/fantasy/paranormal. And I got stuck reading & writing historical fiction! Still at it with a sequel in progress. So time to read has been shortened. But, I’ll get to Diana’s book soon.

  6. I agree with Sally that this book would be an excellent choice for someone who is not a reader of fantasy. It combines realistic and imagined elements seamlessly with writing that’s as “literary” as anyone could wish for.

  7. A great read that held my attention throughout. I was hoping that some justice would fall upon the Vicar in the end, but like other highly influential people, he managed to avoid trouble. That’s probably more realistic, even though it wouldn’t have broken my heart to see it happen.

  9. A superb review, Sally, of another excellent book from Diana. I read this one a few days ago, loved it, but have had a cataract op that’s limiting my reading and screen time at the moment. I’ll be posting a review as soon as I can see straight! Needless to say, I agree with everything that you say, Sally, and gave a sigh of pleasure at the end but also of regret because the tale was over. xx

Lol Great to have every review enlightened another aspect of the story. Honestly for me a good thing, as reading the story will be also a grammar and vocabulary test. Thanks! hugsx Michael

  11. I agree with every word you said, Sally! I absolutely LOVED this book and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys excellently written fantasy with the added attraction of a beautiful romance. I’ve loved every book of Diana’s I’ve read to date, and this one definitely reminded me to get busy reading the remaining one or two right away.

Thanks for sharing your terrific review, Sally, and congratulations, Diana, on receiving yet another one! Well-earned, indeed!!! 🤗❤️🤗

    • Thanks so much for the lovely comment, Marcia. I never really enjoyed romance as a reader until I started reading my blogger friends’ books, and now I can’t help adding a touch of it into my own. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as a bit of love after all the turmoil. I’m so flattered that you enjoyed the story. Have a beautiful day. Hugs ❤

      • I agree, Diana. While I no longer focus on romance as much as I did at first, I still like a love story or two woven in amongst the drama. Although, with the WRR series, I’ve not added a new couple since Rabbit showed up. Must think about that as I move forward.

As for TND, the romantic story adds to all the other elements to make it even more fraught with peril for each character concerned. Those action scenes are filled with danger that would seriously impact any growing relationship. Add to that the conflict generated by the disparate backgrounds of the characters, and it all makes for a wonderfully tense mix that I couldn’t put down! Perfectly balanced!

      • I think WRR is a wonderful love story, Marcia. The love between parent and child, to me, is just as beautiful as romantic love, and Rabbit is certainly lovable! And I’m glad the romantic story of TND enhanced the stakes. It did its job. 🙂 Thanks again for reading and the wonderful comment. ❤

      • I agree that there are all kinds of wonderful love. I should have been more specific. I was thinking of romance, specifically, like with Sarah and Mac in the first WRR book. As a family now with Branna and Rabbit, there’s love in abundance, for sure, but not the typical romantic suspense type. I’m okay with that, but it’s possible someone may come along for Austin Dupree in the future, even in the novella trilogy I’ve started. We’ll see how that plays out. 😀 And I’m delighted that you enjoy the love between Rabbit and his adopted family. They’re all pretty special to me, for sure. 😀 ❤
