How I discovered this book: I’ve enjoyed others by this author so thought I’d try this one!
In a Nutshell: A novel about the Polish partisans of WWII, and a mystery surrounding an unmarked grave, waiting to be solved fifty years later.
This is a terrific book that taught me much I didn’t know about Poland eighty years ago – I didn’t realise that, during World War II, Russia was considered as much an enemy as Nazi Germany, or why. I read the second half of the book in one afternoon; I was utterly gripped.
The main timeline of the story concerns Edek and Szymon, two young lads wanting to join the partisans (or Home Army). Now and again, we move forward a few decades and meet Dorota, who is fascinated by and determined to solve the mysteries surrounding her family … and the identity of a body in an unmarked grave.
The mystery side of the story was well thought out and provided a completely unexpected outcome, but I found the chapters set during the war the most compelling. It is so hard for us to comprehend the hardship people endured in their daily lives less than a century ago, and what they were prepared to suffer for the sake of their country, what they would risk to help their friends; this novel really brought home the terror of Nazi occupation, and the bravery of the persecuted people of that time and place. The Warsaw uprising, the stealing of munitions from the local German garrison, a thrilling escape from one of the cattle trucks heading to Auschwitz, the annihilation of whole villages, the murder of so many innocents.
Highly recommended!

A small selection of books by Terry Tyler
One of the reviews for Infected the first book in Terry’s latest excellent series.
First of all, Terry Tyler is one of my favourite storytellers in any genre and I’ve devoured her recent post-apocalyptic dramas with gusto! I applauded her approach to this genre in previous reviews due to the concentration on the human characters and response to the destruction of organised society by a deadly virus.
With this new series, Tyler’s post-apocalyptic journey finally hits the ‘zombie’ track, and it’s setting up to be a winner. Reflecting popular portrayals like The Walking Dead, it follows a disparate selection of the usual well-drawn characters trying to escape and survive while society around them succumbs to the deadly virus.
This author has a particular skill in describing people and situations with a few deft strokes of the pen and avoids falling into tropes of blood and gore associated with this genre, leaving much to the lurid imaginations of the reader and keeping the story moving at a brisk pace.
Like most of her work, this is written in a clean, efficient style that keeps you turning the pages. I look forward to the rest of this series, although with some trepidation!

How to feature in the series?
- All I need you to do is give me permission to dive in to your archives and find two posts to share here on Smorgasbord either by leaving a note in the comments or by emailing me. (sally.cronin@moyhill.com)
- Rather than a set topic, I will select posts at random of general interest across a number of subjects from the last six months of 2023. (it is helpful if you have a link to your archives in your sidebar by month)
- As I will be promoting your books as part of the post along with all your information and links so I will not be sharing direct marketing or self- promotional posts in the series.
- If you are an author I am sure you will have a page on your blog with the details, and an ‘about page’ with your profile and social media links (always a good idea anyway). I will get everything that I need.
- As a blogger I would assume that you have an ‘about page’ a profile photo and your links to social media.
- Copyright is yours and I will ©Your name on every post… and you will be named as the author in the URL and subject line.
- Previous participants are very welcome to take part again.
- Each post is reformatted for my blog and I don’t cut and paste, this means it might look different from your own post especially if you are using the block editor
N.B – To get the maximum benefit from your archive posts, the only thing I ask is that you respond to comments individually and share on your own social media.. thank you.

This book sounds intense. The sacrifices and the horror of the time are almost beyond comprehension. This kind of book seems to bring it home. Thanks for Terry for the review, and a great post to share, Sally. Thanks!

Thanks Diana and we forget that even with everything that is going on, and that there are still many enduring this kind of horror, how lucky we are. ♥

A strong review by Terry, and it sound like the author really did her research for this one. I heard similar stories from people who lived in Czechoslovakia during WWII.
