For the next few weeks I am going to be sharing my favourite songs from the movies. I shared some recently during the summer music festival, but I missed out on many that I am sure you will enjoy too.
The first song is Shaft from the movie by the same name, performed by Isaac Hayes. Uploaded by Alamo YTC Germany
From the 1971 original film starring Richard Roundtree, this film was a violent thriller with plenty of action and as their have been two remakes since, clearly a winning formula. For me at age 18 it was a bit of a shock to the system, as I had been brought up on Hollywood musicals, Westerns and epics such as Dr. Zivago and Laurence of Arabia. The plot has been updated many times with series such as Taken, but the one element that has always stayed with me is the theme, which found its way into the clubs fairly quickly.

Isaac Lee Hayes Jr. (August 20, 1942 – August 10, 2008) was an American singer, songwriter, actor, and producer. Hayes was one of the creative forces behind the Southern soul music label Stax Records, where he served both as an in-house songwriter and as a session musician and record producer, teaming with his partner David Porter during the mid-1960s. Hayes and Porter were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 in recognition of writing scores of songs for themselves, the duo Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas, and others. In 2002, Hayes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Definitely a good one, Sally. This theme song added so much to the movie. Huns and I danced to the music from Dr. Zhivago at our wedding – a waltz we had to practice!

A great tune but I didn’t care for the violent movie at the time. I’m sure it was tame compared to movies now though.

It was so ‘cool’ back then with Shaft. It was as though a new generation was making a place for itself and it surely did. Brings back memories. 🙂

I love this song. Did you see him perform it on the Academy Awards the year it was nominated? The piano rose up out of the floor while he played it, as I remember. Amazing and so very cool.

A fantastic pick for one of your favorite songs from the movies. Isaac Hayes has that sultry kind of Barry White voice that I wish I had. “Can you dig it?”
